In manufacturing Ultra high strength fiber reinforced concrete(UHSFRC), steel fiber, super-plasticizer and silica fume are important but they are imported materials therefore very expensive. consequently it is necessary to find substitutes of them or to develop producing techniques in order to manufacture UHSFRC economically. In this study, we investigated if it was possible to substitute blast-furnace slag instead of silica fume and steel fiber of home manufacture instead of one of overseas manufacture.
The limitation of the yield strength in reinforced concrete columns is given for the effective use of high-strength steel bar, because very high-strength steel bar does not yield while concrete fails in compression. In order to overcome this limitation, it is required to increase peak strain of the concrete. The objective of this study is to examine the confinement effect of plate type lateral reinforcement in reinforced concrete columns. From this experimental study, the reinforced concrete columns confined by plate type carbon fiber sheets showed higher compressive strength and peak concrete strain comparing to the unconfined columns. The confinement effect is higher when cross-sectional type is a circular one than a square one. Moreover, the confinement effect was also higher for circular type confinement. Based on this study, high-strength steel bars with strength exceeding 800 MPa can be effectively used for reinforced concrete columns confined by plate type lateral reinforcements.
The collapse of concrete structures by extreme loads such as impact, explosion, and blast from terrorist attacks causes severe property damage and human casualties. Concrete has excellent impact resistance to such extreme loads in comparison with other construction materials. Nevertheless, existing concrete structures designed without consideration of the impact or blast load with high strain rate are endangered by those unexpected extreme loads. In this study, to improve the impact resistance, the static and impact behaviors of concrete beams caste with steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) with 0~1.5% (by volume) of 30 mm long hooked steel fibers were assessed. Test results indicated that the static and impact resistances, flexural strength, ductility, etc., were significantly increased when higher steel fiber volume fraction was applied. In the case of the layered concrete (LC) beams including greater steel fiber volume fraction in the tensile zone, the higher static and impact resistances were achieved than those of the normal steel fiber reinforced concrete beam with an equivalent steel fiber volume fraction. The impact test results were also compared with the analysis results obtained from the single degree of freedom (SDOF) system anaysis considering non-linear material behaviors of steel fiber reinforced concrete. The analysis results from SDOF system showed good agreement with the experimental maximum deflections.
This paper presents investigation into the behavior of beam-column joints, with the joint region concrete being replaced by steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) and by ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). A total of ten beam-column joint specimens (BCJ) were tested experimentally to failure under monotonic and cyclic loading, with the beam section being subjected to flexural loading and the column to combined flexural and axial loading. The joint region essentially transferred shear and axial stresses as received from the column. Steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) and ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) were used as an innovative construction and/or strengthening scheme for some of the BCJ specimens. The reinforced concrete specimens were reinforced with longitudinal steel rebar, 18 mm, and some specimens were reinforced with an additional two ties in the joint region. The results showed that using SFRC and UHPC as a replacement concrete for the BCJ improved the joint shear strength and the load carrying capacity of the hybrid specimens. The mode of failure was also converted from a non-desirable joint shear failure to a preferred beam flexural failure. The effect of the ties in the SFRC and UHPC joint regions could not be observed due to the beam flexural failure. Several models were used in estimating the joint shear strength for different BCJ specimens. The results showed that the existing models yielded wide-ranging values. A new concept to take into account the influence of column axial load on the shear strength of beam-column joints is also presented, which demonstrates that the recommended values for concrete tensile strength for determination of joint shear strength need to be amended for joints subject to moderate to high axial loads. Furthermore, finite element model (FEM) simulation to predict the behaviour of the hybrid BCJ specimens was also carried out in an ABAQUS environment. The result of the FEM modelling showed good agreement with experimental results.

Many studies have been performed on hybrid fiber reinforced concrete for years, which is to improve some of the weak material properties of concrete. Studies on characteristics of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete using amorphous steel fiber and organic fiber, however, yet remain to be done. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the compressive and tensile behaviors and then propose a material model of high performance hybrid fiber reinforced concrete using amorphous steel fiber and polyamide fiber. For this purpose, the high performance hybrid fiber reinforced concretes were made according to their total volume fraction of 1.0% for target compressive strength of 40MPa and 60MPa, respectively, and then the compressive and tensile behaviors of those were evaluated. Also, based on the experimental results of the high performance hybrid fiber reinforced concrete and mortar, each material model for the compressive and tensile behavior was suggested. It was found that the experimental results and the proposed models corresponded relatively well.

This study examines the bending behavior of lap-spliced ultra-high-strength fiber-reinforced concrete members and evaluates the safety of the design codes for ultra-high-strength fiber-reinforced concrete structures. An experiment on a total of six beams was performed. The main variables were the fiber-inclusion and the lap-spliced length at the center of the beams. The steel fibers in a volume fraction of 2% were used, and the lap-splice lengths were determined to be 8db and 16db. As a result of the test, the specimens not reinforced with fiber lost abrupt load-bearing capacity at the lap region and did not experience yielding of the reinforcing bar. In the case of fiber-reinforced concrete, if a lap-splice length of 16db is secured, the yielding of the main reinforcing bar can be experienced, and appropriate flexural strength can be expressed. Based on the experimental results of this study, as a result of reviewing the lap-splice length calculation formulas of the current design standards and the ultra-high-strength concrete structural design recommendations, it was found that all of them were evaluated conservatively.

The objective of this study is to investigate the hysteretic behaviors of exterior beam-column joints with high strength concrete (f'c≒1000kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$) subjected to cyclic loads. Four exterior subassemblages scaled down about 60% were tested, whose variables were with/without shear reinforcements and with/without slab and spandrel beams. Hoop bars and hooked steel fibers were used as the shear reinforcements. The test results showed that using hooked steel fiber reinforced concrete with volume ratio 1.5% at beam-column joints was very effective to resist shear stress due to cyclic loads.

The effectiveness of an innovative method for the earthquake-resistant rehabilitation of existing poorly detailed reinforced concrete (RC) structures is experimentally investigated herein. Eight column subassemblages were subjected to earthquake-type loading and their hysteretic behaviour was evaluated. Four of the specimens were identical and representative of columns found in RC structures designed in the 1950s-70s period for gravity load only. These original specimens were subjected to cyclic lateral deformations and developed brittle failure mechanisms. Three of the damaged specimens were subsequently retrofitted with innovative high-strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete (HSSFC) jackets. The main variables examined were the jacket width and the contribution of mesh steel reinforcement in the seismic performance of the enhanced columns. The influence of steel fiber volume fraction was also examined using test results of a previous work of Tsonos et al. (2017). The fourth earthquake damaged subassemblage was strengthened with a conventional RC jacket and was subjected to the same lateral displacement history as the other three retrofitted columns. The seismic behaviour of the subassemblages strengthened according to the proposed retrofit scheme was evaluated with respect to that of the original specimens and that of the column strengthened with the conventional RC jacket. Test results clearly demonstrated that the HSSFC jackets effectively prevented the development of shear failure mechanisms, while ensuring a ductile seismic response similar to that of the subassemblage retrofitted with the conventional RC jacket. Ultimately, an indisputable superiority in the overall seismic performance of the strengthened columns was achieved with respect to the original specimens.

In this paper, the flexural creep behavior of hooked-end steel fiber reinforced high-strength concrete was evaluated to investigate the steel fiber content influence on long-term behavior of flexural members. An experimental program consisted of nine prismatic beam specimens with dimensions of 150 × 150 × 600mm reinforced with different contents of steel fiber (0, 0.75 and 1.5% at the volume fraction). To introduce flexural creep loading to notched prismatic beam specimens, a four-point bending test setup was used. The sustained load with 40% of the flexural strength was applied by means of a lever system and controlled by a load cell for 90 days. During sustained loading, crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) was monitored. Conventional flexural test after creep tests were carried out to evaluate the residual capacity of each specimen. Test results showed that steel fiber content has a significant effect on the flexural creep behavior of high-strength concrete and long-term flexural load with 40% of flexural strength doesn't generate negative effects on the residual capacity of steel fiber reinforced high-strength concrete.
The concrete plates are most widely used structural elements in the hulls of floating concrete structures such as concrete barges and pontoons, bridge decks, basement floors and liquid storage tanks. The study on the behavior of high-strength fiber reinforced concrete (HSFRC) plates was carried out to evaluate the performance of plates under in-plane and transverse loads. The plates were tested in simply supported along all the four edges and subjected to in-plane and traverse loads. In this experimental program, twenty four 150 mm diameter cylinders and twelve plate elements of size $600{\times}600{\times}30$ mm were prepared and tested. Water-to-cementitious materials ratios of 0.3 and 0.4 with 10% and 15% silica fume replacements were used in the concrete mixes. The fiber volume fractions, $V_f$ = 0%, 1% and 1.5% with an aspect ratio of 80 were used in this study. The HSFRC mixes had the concrete compressive strengths in the range of 52.5 to 70 MPa, flexural strengths ranging from 6.21 to 11.08 MPa and static modulus of elasticity ranging from 29.68 to 36.79 GPa. In this study, the behavior of HSFRC plate elements subjected to combined uniaxial in-plane and transverse loads was investigated.
