  • This paper describes the nonlinear analyses of a 1:4 scale model of a prestressed concrete containment vessel (PCCV) using an axisymmetric model and a three-dimensional model. These two models are refined by comparison of the analysis results and with testing results. This paper is especially focused on the analysis of behavior under pressure and the temperature effects revealed using an axisymmetric model. The temperature-dependent degradation properties of concrete and steel are considered. Both geometric and material nonlinearities, including thermal effects, are also addressed in the analyses. The Menetrey and Willam (1995) concrete constitutive model with non-associated flow potential is adopted for this study. This study includes the results of the predicted thermal and mechanical behaviors of the PCCV subject to high temperature loading and internal pressure at the same time. To find the effect of high temperature accident conditions on the ultimate capacity of the liner plate, reinforcement, prestressing tendon and concrete, two kinds of analyses are performed: one for pressure only and the other for pressure with temperature. The results from the test on pressurization, analysis for pressure only, and analyses considering pressure with temperatures are compared with one another. The analysis results show that the temperature directly affects the behavior of the liner plate, but has little impact on the ultimate pressure capacity of the PCCV.

  • an isolated droplet combustion exposed to pressure perturbations in stagnant gaseous environment is numerically conducted. Governing equations are solved for flow parameters at gas and liquid phases separately and thermodynamic parameters at the interfacial boundary are matched for problem closure. For high-pressure effects, vapor-liquid interfacial thermodynamics is rigorously treated. A series of parametric calculations in terms of mean pressure level and wave frequencies are carried out employing a n-pentane droplet in stagnant gaseous air. Results show that the operating pressure and driving frequency have an important role in determining the amplitude and phase lag of a combustion response. Mass evaporation rate responding to pressure waves is amplified with increase in pressure due to substantial reduction in latent heat of vaporization. Phase difference between pressure and evaporation rate decreases due to the reduced thermal inertia at high pressure. In addition to this, augmentation of perturbation frequency also enhances amplification of vaporization rate because the time period for the pressure oscillation is much smaller than the liquid thermal inertia time. The phase of evaporation rate shifts backward due to the elevated thermal inertia at high acoustic frequency.

Effects of Annealing Pressures on the Ordering and Microstructures of FePt:Ag Nanocomposite Films

  • FePt:Ag (100 nm) nanocomposite thin films were prepared on naturally-oxidized Si substrates by dc magnetron sputtering at room temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are used to investigate the effects of annealing pressures on the ordering processes and microstructures of these films. The average sizes for the $L1_0$ ordered domains and the FePt grains are reduced to d = 9 nm and D = 13 nm from d = 19 nm and D = 34 nm, respectively, when the annealing pressure is enhanced to 0.6 GPa from room pressure at 873 K. Furthermore, the size distribution is improved into a narrow range. With increasing pressure, the coercivity of $L1_0$-FePt:Ag thin films decreases from 15.1 to 7.6 kOe. In the present study, the effects of high pressure on the $L1_0$ ordering processes and microstructures of FePt:Ag nanocomposite films were discussed.

  • The reliability assessment is performed for Pressure Control Regulator of Aircraft Fuel System using reliability procedure which consists of the reliability analysis and the Failure Modes and Effects Analysis(FMEA). The target reliability as MTBF(Mean Time Between Failure) is set to 5000hr. During the reliability analysis process, the system is categorized by Work Breakdown Structure(WBS) up to level 3, and a reliability structure is defined by schematics of the system. Since the components and parts that have been collected through EPRD/NPRD. The predicted reliability to meet mission requirements and operating conditions is estimated as 4375.9hr. To accomplish the target reliability, the components and parts with high RPN have been identified and changed by analyzing the potential failure modes and effects. By changing the configuration design of components and parts with high-risk, the design is satisfied target reliability.

Effects of Thermal Processing Combined with High Pressure on the Characteristics of Cooked Pork (초고압 열처리가 가열 돈육의 품질특성에 미치는 효과)

  • This study evaluated the effects of thermal processing combined with high pressure on the properties of cooked pork. Pressurization followed by heating (PFH), heating followed by pressurization (HFP) and heating under pressurization (HUP) treatments were compared to a heated only control. Cooked meat without simultaneous pressurization showed little or no decrease in water binding properties relative to the control, regardless of the sequence of pressurization and heating. However, HUP treated pork had significantly higher water binding properties than the control (p<0.05). The pH values of all treatments were not significantly different with the exception of HUP at 300 MPa. The HUP treated pork showed the best tenderizing effects among all the treatments tested and the effect was more significant at increased pressure levels (p<0.05). In addition, increasing pressure levels significantly increased the L-values of pork (p<0.05). PFH and HFP treated pork had significantly lower a-values (p<0.05), while no significant differences were observed in HUP. HUP treated pork had the lowest b-values at 100 MPa. however, the differences were not significant at increasing pressure levels. These results indicate that heating under pressure is the best cooking condition for improving the quality characteristics of pork without adversely affecting its appearance.

Effects of Ultra-high Pressure Homogenization on the Emulsifying Properties of Whey Protein Isolates under Various pH

  • The effect of ultra-high pressure homogenization on the emulsifying properties of whey protein was investigated in a model emulsion made with whey protein isolate and soya oil under various pH. The emulsifying properties, the average diameter of the oil droplets ($d_{vs}$), and the protein load, were measured for each emulsion produced at different homogenization pressures (50 to 200 MPa) and pH values (4.6 to 8.0). According to the results of variance analysis and response surface, the pH had more influence on oil droplet size and protein load than homogenization pressure. The model equations, which were obtained by response surface analysis, show that pH and homogenization pressure had the major effect on oil droplet size and protein load. Higher homogenization pressure decreased the average droplet size and the protein load. Homogenization at high pressure, as opposed to low pressure, causes no overprocessing, but the effect was pH-dependent. The average diameter of the oil droplets increased slightly by decreasing the pH from 8.0 to 6.5 and then increased dramatically toward the isoelectric point of whey protein (i.e., at pH 4.6). Moreover associated droplets were found at acidic pH and their size was increased at high temperature.

Effects of Asymmetric Airway Inertance on Mean Lung Volume During High Frequency Ventilation(HFV)

  • A possible asymmetry in airway inertance was modeled based on previously reported radiographic visualization data of the airway wall fluctuation in intact dogs. Effects of asymmetric Inertance on mean lung volume during high frequency ventilation (HFV) were evaluated in terms of mean inertive pressure drop across the airways. It was found that a negligible inertlve pressure drop was expected ($<1{\;}cmH_20$) in normal subjects, while a sig- nificant rise in mean alveolar pressure compared to mean mouth pressure by approximately $3{\;}cmH_20$ was resulted for about 40% airway fluctuation representing bronchoconstriction state by Histamine induction. These results demonstrate that asymmetric Inertance could lead patients with airway diseases to a significant lung hyperinflation (LHI), and bronchodilation treatment is recommended prior to applying HFV to prevent those patients from a possible barotrauma.

Thermal stress and pore pressure development in microwave heated concrete

  • Most previous studies have generally overlooked the contribution of thermal stresses generated within the concrete mass when subjected to microwave heating and reported on pore-pressure as being the dominant cause of surface spalling. Also, the variation in electromagnetic properties of concrete and its effects on the microwave heating process have not been studied in detail. In this paper, finite element modeling is used to examine the simultaneous development of compressive thermal stresses and pore-pressure arising from the microwave heating of concrete. A modified Lambert's Law formulation is proposed to estimate the microwave power dissipation in the concrete mass. Moreover, the effects of frequency and concrete water content on the concrete heating rate and pattern are investigated. Results show high compressive stresses being generated especially in concrete with a high water content when heated by microwaves of higher frequencies. The results also reveal that the water content of concrete plays a crucial role in the microwave heating process.

Effects of Chamaecyparis Obtusa Essential Oil on the Autonomic Nervous System

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of Chamaecyparis obtusa essential oil on the activity of autonomic nervous system. Heart rate variability (HRV), as an indicator of autonomic nervous system activity and blood pressure were measured before and after inhalation of Chamaecyparis obtusa essential oil. The systolic blood pressure was decreased by inhalation of Chamaecyparis obtusa essential oil (p<0.05). The diastolic blood pressure was not changed significantly by Chamaecyparis obtusa. High frequency (HF) power level was not changed but High frequency/Low frequency (HF/LF) ratio was decreased by Chamaecyparis obtusa essential oil (p<0.05), meaning that parasympathetic nervous system activity was not affected but sympathetic nervous system activity was decreased. These results indicate that Chamaecyparis obtusa essential oil has a modulatory effect on the autonomic nervous system activity.

The Supplementary Effects of Harvesting Lentinus edodes at Different Times on Treating Blood Pressure and Serum Lipid Levels in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (채취 시기가 다른 표고버섯의 첨가가 SHR 흰쥐의 혈압 및 혈청 지질 수준에 미치는 영향)

  • Many studies have shown that Letinus edodes has some effect on reducing blood pressure and lipid levels of animals with high pressure and hyperlipidemia. The cost of Letinus edodes varies depending on when it is harvested, and yet there has been no data collected on the bio-functional effects of Letinus edodes harvested at different times. This study was conducted to investigate the supplementary effects of Letinus edodes harvested at different times on blood pressure and blood lipid levels of hypertensive rats. Three kinds of experimental diets - control (CO), early harvested Lentinus deodes (EL), and late harvested Lentinus edodes (LL) - were supplied to spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) for eight weeks. The diet intake, body weight, organ weight, and serum lipid levels were subsequently measured. No significant difference was observed in diet intake and in the respective weights of the body, liver, and epididymal fat pad among experimental groups. The levels of systolic and disastolic blood pressure were significantly lower in the LE and LL groups than those in the CO group; and the concentration of serum total cholesterol was also lower in the LE and LL groups than in the CO group. These results confirm that Lentinus edodes reduces blood pressure levels and serum total cholesterol concentration in spontaneously hypertensive rats. But the effects of Lentinus edodes did not differ significantly based on whether the Lentinus edodes was harvested early or late.
