파형강관으로 내부구속된 중공 R.C 교각의 연성도 (Ductility Characteristics of a Hollow R.C Pier Internally Confined by a Corrugated Steel Tube)

  • When the weight if a concrete member makes problems, or when the cost of the concrete is relatively high, it may be economical to use a hollow concrete member. But a hollow R.C column may have poor ductility because of the brittle failure at the inner face of the hollow R.C column. This brittle failure results from the absence of the confinement at the inner face of the hollow R.C column. To avoid this brittle failure an internally confined hollow R.C column by a steel tube was developed before. In this study, a hollow R.C column is internally confined by a corrugated steel tube instead of a general flat steel tube. And a column ductility is performed. Test results show that the energy ductility ratio of a internally confined hollow R.C column by a by a corrugated steel tube corresponds to $80\%$ of the energy ductility ratio of a general solid R.C column.

Isolation of Protease-Producing Arctic Marine Bacteria

  • We isolated and identified three protease-producing bacteria that had inhabited the region around the Korean Arctic Research Station Dasan located at Ny-Alesund, Svalbard, Norway $(79^{\circ}N,\;12^{\circ}E)$. Biofilms were collected from the surface of a floating pier and from dead brown algae in a tide pool near the seashore. The biofilm samples were transported to the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) under frozen conditions, diluted in sterilized seawater, and cultured on Zobell agar plates with 1% skim milk at $10^{\circ}C$. Three clear zone forming colonies were selected as protease-producing bacteria. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rDNA sequences showed that these three stains shared high sequence similarities with Pseudoalteromonas elyakovii, Exiguobacterium oxidotofewm Pseudomonas jessenii, respectively. We expect these Arctic bacteria may be used to develop new varieties of protease that are active at low temperatures.

  • Due to many advantages such as lightweight, high durability and speedy construction, increasing number of bridges of various girder types are being built recently with glass-fiber reinforced composite deck. A profile of the composite deck, called 'Delta deck', is developed which has 3 trapezoidal cells of 200mm depth. This paper introduces how to develop 'Delta deck' and its application to the world largest composite-deck bridge, which is 300m long and 35m wide and is currently under construction.

  • Al alloy anode is mostly used for protecting marine structures such as pier steel piles and ship's body. Recently it has been reported that the life of Al alloy anode has been shortened significantly than the original design life. It is suggested that the suspected reasons for this problem mentioned above seems to be the improper protection design of alloy of anode on sea water regardless of environmental facotrs such as flow rate, temperature, contamination degree etc. However there is few paper about to the sea water contamination degree affecting to the life of Al alloy anode. In this study, the property of Al alloy anode was investigated as a parameter of sea water contamination degree such as variation of pH 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and each sea port's contaminated waters.

Real-time comprehensive image processing system for detecting concrete bridges crack

  • Cracks are an important distress of concrete bridges, and may reduce the life and safety of bridges. However, the traditional manual crack detection means highly depend on the experience of inspectors. Furthermore, it is time-consuming, expensive, and often unsafe when inaccessible position of bridge is to be assessed, such as viaduct pier. To solve this question, the real-time automatic crack detecting system with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) become a choice. This paper designs a new automatic detection system based on real-time comprehensive image processing for bridge crack. It has small size, light weight, low power consumption and can be carried on a small UAV for real-time data acquisition and processing. The real-time comprehensive image processing algorithm used in this detection system combines the advantage of connected domain area, shape extremum, morphology and support vector data description (SVDD). The performance and validity of the proposed algorithm and system are verified. Compared with other detection method, the proposed system can effectively detect cracks with high detection accuracy and high speed. The designed system in this paper is suitable for practical engineering applications.

Effect of various aspects on the seismic performance of a curved bridge with HDR bearings

  • The performance of an isolated horizontally curved continuous bridge with High Damping Rubber (HDR) Bearings has been investigated under seismic loading conditions. The effectiveness of response controls of the bridge by HDR bearings for various aspects viz. variation in ground motion characteristics, multi-directional effect, level of earthquake shaking, varying incidence angle, have been determined. Three recorded ground motions, representative of historical earthquakes along with near-field, far-field and forward directivity effects, have been considered in the study. The efficacy of the bearings with bidirectional effect considering interaction behavior of bearing and pier has also been investigated. Modeling and analysis of the bridge have been done by finite element approach. Sensitivity studies of the bridge response with respect to design parameters of the bearings for the considered ground motions have been performed. The importance of the nonlinearity of HDR bearings along with crucial design parameters has been identified. It has been observed that the HDR bearings performed well in different variations of ground motions, especially for controlling torsional moment. However, the deck displacement has been found to be increased significantly in case of Turkey ground motions, considering forward directivity effect, which needs to be paid more attention from designer point of view.

경사지반에 인접하여 설치된 무리말뚝의 거동연구 (Behaviors of Pile Croup Installed Near Inclined Ground)

  • 사면을 포함한 경사지에 설치된 송전탑, 교각, 고층빌딩 등을 지지하는 말뚝은 풍하중, 지진, 차량 등에 의한 수평하중을 고려하여 설계되어야 한다. 이러한 사면이나 경사지에 설치된 수평하중을 받는 말뚝은 편평한 지반에 비하여, 수평지지력이 감소하기 때문이다. 그러므로 이러한 구조물은 일반적으로 강성이 높고, 대구경의 기초인 피어기초가 사용된다. 수평하중을 받는 피어기초는 일반적으로 장대말뚝과 다른 거동을 한다. 즉, 수평하중에 의하여 말뚝 자체의 회전이 발생하고, 그 회전의 중심점 상부의 사면측의 수동토압에 의존하여 지반파괴가 발생한다는 측면에서 짧은 강성 말뚝과 유사한 거동을 한다. 본 논문은 모래사면의 언덕 근처에 설치된 짧은 말뚝의 수평하중의 영향에 대한 실험 및 수치해석 결과를 포함한다. 대부분을 모형실험과 3차원 탄소성 유한요소해석의 비교, 결과를 기술하였다. 먼저, 사면 언덕에서 모형말뚝까지의 거리를 3종류로 구분하여 단항의 모형실험과 군항말뚝의 수평하중 특성을 파악하기 위하여 수평지반과 사면지반(경사 30$^{\circ}$)에 대하여 말뚝중심간의 거리를 각2종류로 모형실험을 실시하였다. 동시에 3차원 탄소성 유한요소법에 의한 수치해석을 통하여 모형실험의 결과와의 비교를 시도하였다. 사용된 모래지반은 배수조건하에서 삼축압축실험으로 재현하였다. 3차원 탄소성 유한요소해석에서 완전탄소성모델의 파괴기준은 Mohr-Coulomb식, 소성 포텐셜은 Drucker-Prage식을 이용한 MC-DP모델을 적용하였다. 연구결과, 3차원탄소성 유한요소법이 사질토 지반에 설치된 짧은 말뚝의 수평거동을 파악하는데 유효하다는 것을 확인하였다.

  • 최근 강구조물의 장경간화 및 고층화로 인하여 고강도강재의 사용이 점차 증가하고 있다. 고강도강재(POSTEN60, POSTEN80)가 적용된 강구조물의 정확한 내진설계를 위해서는 반복하중 작용시 발생하는 대변형 및 비선형반복거동을 구현할 수 있는 해석기법이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 고강도강재의 단조재하실험 및 반복하중실험을 기초하여 반복소성모델을 제안하였다. 제안된 소성모델과 유한변위이론을 적용한 3차원 탄소성 유한변위해석기법을 개발하였으며 이를 실험값과 비교하여 검증하였다. 검증된 3차원 탄소성 유한변위해석을 이용하여 고강도 원형강교각의 내진해석을 수행하였다. 또한, 고강도 원형강교각의 지름-두께비에 따른 내진성능을 명확히 하였다.

섬유보강폴리머(FRP) 복합재료의 교량 적용 (A Successful Beginning for Fiber Reinforced Polymer(FRP) Composite Materials in Bridge Applications)

  • 부식 열화는 교량 기술자들에게 있어서 지속적인 도전을 요구하는 문제가 되어왔는데, 스텔스 항공기를 개발하게 한 새로운 재료 기술은 교량의 부식을 해결할 수 있게 하였다. 즉, 경량의 고강도 재료로 높은 피로 저항성을 갖고 있고, 부식에 강한 복합체는 교량의 재료로서 아주 바람직한 성질을 갖고 있다 섬유 보강 폴리머(FRP) 복합재료를 교량의 건설에 이용하려는 프로젝트는 1998년 현재 80 여 개가 넘게 진행되고 있는데, 이 중 미국 내에서 31개의 프로젝트가 수행되고 있다. 이 글은 미국 내에서 FRP복합체를 교량 공학 분야에 적용하려는 초기의 성공적인 시도들에 관한 내용으로 복합체의 장점, 특성, 교량 적용시 고려 사항, 그리고 향후 복합재료에 관한 기술을 토목 구조물에 적용하는데 필요한 소요 기술 등에 관하여 정리한 것이다. 이 새로운 재료는 신설 구조물의 건설과 기존 교량의 보수 및 보강에 모두 적용할 수 있으며, FRP복합체 기술을 토목 구조물과 기반 시설물 건설 분야에 적용하는 것은 지금까지 성공적인 결과를 보여 주고 있다 미국연방도로국(FHWA, Federal Highway Administration)은 이 기술을 미국 내 교통 기반 시설물인 신규 교량의 건설은 물론 기즌 교량의 보수 및 보강에 활용하는 방안에 대하여 관심을 갖고 있다.

Potential Applications of Low Altitude Remote Sensing for Monitoring Jellyfish

  • Jellyfish (cnidarian) are conspicuous in many marine ecosystems when in bloom. Despite their importance for the ecosystem structure and function, very few sampling programs are dedicated to sample jellyfish because they are patchily distributed and easily clogged plankton net. Although satellite remote sensing is an excellent observing tool for many phenomena in the ocean, their uses for monitoring jellyfish are not possible due to the coarse spatial resolutions. Hence, we developed the low altitude remote sensing platform to detect jellyfish in high resolutions, which allow us to monitor not only horizontal, but also vertical migration of them. Using low altitude remote sensing platform,we measured the jellyfish from the pier at the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory in Chesapeake Bay. The patterns observed included discrete patches, in rows that were aligned with waves that propagated from deeper regions, and aggregation around physical objects. The corresponding areas of exposed jellyfish on the sea surface were $0.1{\times}10^4pixel^2$, $0.3{\times}10^4pixel^2$, and $2.75{\times}10^4pixel^2$, respectively. Thus, the research result suggested that the migration of the jellyfish was related to the physical forcing in the sea surface.
