3-Amino-1,2,4-triazole (ATA) (2.5 and 5.0 phr) was incorporated into a immiscible maleated ethylene propylene diene rubber(mEPDM)/maleated high density polyethylene(mHDPE) (50 wt%/50 wt%) blend by melt mixing. Effects of the ATA on structure, mechanical and rheological properties of the blend was investigated. FT-IR and DMA results revealed that supramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between the polymer chains occur by reaction of ATA with maleic anhydride grafted onto the component polymers in the blend, which induces the physical crosslinks in the blend. FE-SEM analysis showed that mEPDM forms a dispersed phase in continuous mHDPE matrix, and the blend with the ATA has finer phase morphology as compared to the blend without the ATA. By the addition of ATA in the blend, there were significant increases in tensile strength, modulus and elongation-at-break as well as elastic recoverability. Melt rheology studies revealed that ATA induced substantial increase in storage modulus and complex viscosity of the blend at the melt state.
Value-added utilization of the disposed ash trees due to the infestation by Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was explored by converting them into particleboards (PBs) and wood-plastic composites (WPCs). The experimental result showed that PB panels could be successfully manufactured from the ash wood but compaction ratio need to be higher than 1.3 in order to meet the standard requirements listed by American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Ash wood plastic composites with high density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP) were also prepared with additives by extrusion. Physical and mechanical properties of ash wood plastic composite compared favorably to those made of pine and maple.

The efficacy of ozone water in reducing food-borne pathogenic bacteria on High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and wooden chopping boards in food industry was investigated in this study. 1-5 log reductions of E. coli O157:H7, S. aureus, S. Typhimurium, and B. cereus were observed with increasing concentrations of ozone water. The immersion treatment evidenced superior capability to inactivate food-borne pathogens than washing treatment. The Gram-negative bacteria, such as E. coli O157:H7 and S. Typhimurium, evidenced lower resistance against ozone water than was seen with the gram-positive bacteria, which included S. aureus and B. cereus. The sterilizing effects of ozone water on HDPE chopping boards was superior to that on wooden boards. This result might be utilized to remove food-borne pathogens from food contact surfaces in the food industry.
Background and objective: Illegal open-air incineration, which is criticized as a leading source of air pollutants among agricultural activities, currently requires constant effort and attention. Countries around the world have been undertaking studies on the emission of heavy metal substances in fine dust discharged during the incineration process. A precise analytical method is required to examine the harmful effects of particulate pollutants on the human body. Methods: In order to simulate open-air incineration, the infrastructure needed for incineration tests complying with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 5G was built, and a large-area analysis was conducted on particulate pollutants through automated scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). For the test specimen, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) waste collected by the DangJin Office located in Choongcheongnam-do was used. To increase the identifiability of the analyzed particles, the incineration experiment was conducted in an incinerator three times after dividing the film waste into 200 g specimens. Results: Among the metal particulate matters detected in the HDPE waste incineration test, transition metals included C (20.8-37.1 wt%) and O (33.7-37.9 wt%). As for other chemical matters, the analysis showed that metal particulate matters such as metalloids, alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, and transition metals reacted to C and C-O. Si, a representative metalloid, was detected at 14.8-20.8 wt%, showing the highest weight ratio except for C and O. Conclusion: In this study, the detection of metal chemicals in incinerated particulate matters was effectively confirmed through SEM-EDS. The results of this study verified that HDPE waste adsorbs metal chemicals originating from soil due to its own properties and deterioration, and that when incinerated, it emits particulate matters containing transition metals and other metals that contribute to the excessive production and reduction of reactive oxygen species.

Phenolic resin has excellent heat resistance and good mechanical properties as a thermosetting resin. However, its thermosetting characteristics cause it to produce a non-recyclable waste in the form of sprue and runner which is discarded and represents up to 15~20% of the overall products. Forty thousand tons of phenolic resin sprue and runner are disposed of (annually). The (annual) cost of such domestic waste disposal is calculated to be 20 billion won. In this study, discarded phenol resin scraps were pulverized and treated by silanes to improve their interfacial adhesion with HDPE. The sizes of the pulverized pulverulent bodies and fine particles were (100um~1000um) and (1~100um), respectively. The pulverized phenol resin was treated with 3-(methacryloyloxy) propyltrimethoxysilane and vinyltrimethoxy silane and the changes in its characteristics were evaluated. The thermal properties were evaluated by DSC and HDT. The mechanical properties were assessed by a notched Izod impact strength tester. When the silane treated phenol resin was added, the heat distortion temperature of HDPE increased from $77^{\circ}C$ to $96^{\circ}C$ and its crystallinity and crystallization temperature also increased. Finally, its impact strength and tensile strength increased by 20% and 50%, respectively, in comparison with the non-treated phenol resin.

This project investigated the use of two types of thermoplastic pipes, High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Poly-vinyl Chloride (PVC), as cross-drains under highways. Pipes ranging from 0.3 m (12 in.) to 1.5 m (60 in.) in diameter were evaluated under deep fills, minimum cover, and construction loads. In addition to a comprehensive literature review, an analytical study into the allowable fill heights for thermoplastic pipes and a field study to observe the installation and performance of the pipe in service conditions were conducted. Based on the study findings, recommendations regarding how and when thermoplastic pipe should be installed are provided.
In this study, designing of a Type 4 pressure vessel using the filament winding method was conducted. In order to prevent leakage in consideration of the design of the hydrogen storage tank, a liner was designed by applying high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and the composite structure was designed by stacking carbon/epoxy in the hoop and helical directions. As a theoretical approach, the angle of the helical fiber and fiber thickness of each hoop and helix were designed. The safety of the design was verified using the commercial software ANSYS.
The separator made from the blends of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was prepared by wet processing to use as Li-ion secondary battery. We investigated effects of the blending of the polymers and the film extension on the mechanical properties of the separator. The mechanical strength of separator increased with increasing molecular weights and contents of UHMWPE, for instance about $1000 kg/\textrm{cm}^2$ with the five times extended film of 6 wt% UHMWPE. The pores of the separator were very uniform with the size of 0.1~$0.12\mu\textrm{m}$. The shut-down characteristic quickly increased at around $130^{\circ}C$ and the fusion temperature was $160^{\circ}C$, so it could be applied to the lithium ion secondary battery.
In this paper the effect of UV (ultraviolet) exposure on HDPE (high density polyethylene)-smooth and f-PP (flexible polypropylene) geomembranes is evaluated under UVB-313 (ultraviolet wavelength 290-315 nm) exposure. Tensile property, melt flow index (MFI), oxidation induction time (OIT), both standard-OIT and high pressure-OIT and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy/attenuated total reflectance (FTIR/ATR) results are discussed. Although tensile properties of the exposed geomembrane samples remained unchanged, the depletion of antioxidants was found higher for f-PP than for HDPE geomembrane. Arrhenius model by extrapolation was used on the data to predict the antioxidant lifetime to a typical site temperature of $20^{\circ}C$. There was no significant difference between the MFI value of the virgin and UV exposed HDPE geomembrane samples but a decrease in MFI was found in f-PP geomembrane that signifies that crosslinking has occurred. From FTIR spectra, the small peak (near $1750\;cm^{-1}$) observed in the spectrum of UV exposed sample corresponds to a carbonyl (C=O) linkage, which suggests that oxidation has occurred in the polymer structure, and another new band for f-PP between 3100 and $3500\;cm^{-1}$ is attributed to a hydroxyl bond and/or hydroperoxide bond.

The purpose of this paper is to study combustion characteristics with the different phase of oxidizer in hybrid rocket combustion. HDPE(High Density Polyethylene) as fuel and $GN_2O$(Gas $N_2O$), $LN_2O$(Liquid $N_2O$) as oxidizer were used to perform the experiments. An investigation was performed for a change of the regression rate, pressure of combustion chamber and combustion efficiency according to the variation of oxidizer phase. In case of using $LN_2O$ as oxidizer, the regression rate is not significantly different from using $GN_2O$ as oxidizer. It is considered that combustion energy is much larger than latent heat energy which was used in the evaporation of liquid oxidizer. However propulsion performance efficiency for $LN_2O$ showed lower value than for $GN_2O$. By increasing the flow rate of liquid oxidizer, heat transfer needed for vaporization of liquid oxidizer was increased, which resulted in the growth of combustion instability.
