Characteristics of carbonized fiberboard such as chemical materials absorption, electromagnetic shielding, and electrical and mechanical performance were determined in previous studies. The carbonized board therefore confirmed that having excellent abilities of these characteristics. In this study, the effect of density on physical properties and sound absorption properties of carbonized fiberboards at $800^{\circ}C$ were investigated for the potential use of carbonized fiberboards as a replacement of conventional sound absorbing material. The thickness of fiberboards after carbonization was reduced 49.9%, 40.7%, and 43.3% in low density fiberboard (LDF), medium density fiberboard (MDF), and high density fiberboard (HDF), respectively. Based on SEM images, porosity of carbonized fiberboard increased by carbonization due to removing adhesives. Moreover, carbonization did not destroy structure of wood fiber based on SEM results. Carbonization process influenced contraction of fiberboard. The sound absorption coefficient of carbonized low density fiberboard (c-LDF) was higher than those of carbonized medium density fiberboard (c-MDF) and carbonized high density fiberboard (c-HDF). This result was similar with original fiberboards, which indicated sound absorbing ability was not significantly changed by carbonization compared to that of original fiberboards. Therefore, the sound absorbing coefficient may depend on source, texture, and density of fiberboard rather than carbonization.

Wood fibers for medium density fiberboard (MDF) was used in the filler layer of the white duplex board for increasing thickness and bulk of the board. The MDF fibers were treated with ozone (3% based on dry weight of the fibers), and mixed together with OCC (old corrugated container) to form paper. Ozone-treated MDF fibers gave high bulk, high tensile strength, high internal bond and fast drainage to the furnish mixed with OCC. It was shown that there were possibilities to reduced basis weight of the filler layer without loss of thickness, stiffness, and tensile strength. Furthermore, it showed the possibility to develop a new kind of board product that has high stiffness as well as high strength properties with light basis weight by application of the ozone-treated MDF fibers.
This study was carried out to resplace traditional virgin wood fiber by recycled MDF-waste fiber for the manufacture of high density fiberboard. For the recycling, MDF waste was disintegrated for 10 minutes and beaten for 15 minutes. There was no difference in formaldehyde emission by desiccator method between virgin wood fiber and disintergrated and beaten MDF-waste fiber. Fiberboard which was maded from 100% of disintergrated and beaten MDF-waste fiber showed similar physical and mechanical properties to those of virgin fiber. The yield of recycled fiber from MDF waste was 85%.
Fast pyrolysis of medium-density fiberboard was carried out using a fluidized-bed reactor under various conditions to find an optimum pyrolysis condition. When the pyrolysis temperature was varied between $425^{\circ}C$ and $575^{\circ}C$, the maximum bio-oil yield of 52 wt% was obtained at $525^{\circ}C$. The quality of the bio-oil product increased with increasing pyrolysis temperature. Pyrolysis at a high temperature removed significant amounts of oxygenates and acids, producing more valuable species such as aromatics and phenolics. The main gaseous products were CO and $CO_2$. The yields of CO and $C_1-C_4$ hydrocarbons increased with increasing the pyrolysis temperature.
This study estimated the impacts of the building permit area change on the forest products import quantities in Korea. The first objective of this dissertation is to analyze whether there is any causal relationship between change in the building permit area and changes in the import quantities of forest products in Korea. Assuming that there is any causal relationship, the second objective is to evaluate the dynamics of the impacts of the building permit area change on the forest products import quantities in Korea. The relationship between the building permit area and the import quantity was represented by bivariate vector autoregressive or vector error correction model. Whether there is any causal relationship between change in the building permit area and changes in the import quantities of forest products was analyzed by the causality test of Granger. And the dynamics of the impacts of the building permit area change on the forest products import quantities were evaluated by variance decomposition analysis and impulse response analysis. The import quantity of forest products can be explained by the lagged building permit area variables and the lagged import quantity variables in Korea. Change in the building permit area causes change in the high-density fiberboard import quantity in Korea. In the bivariate model of the high-density fiberboard import quantity, after six months, the building permit area change accounts for about ten percent of variation in the import quantity, and its own change accounts for about ninety percent of variation in the import quantity. On the other hand, the impact of a shock to the building permit area is significant for about six months on the import quantity of high-density fiberboard in Korea. That is, if the building permit area change indeed had an impact on the import quantity of high-density fiberboard in Korea, it was only of a short-term nature.
Wood composites are a hygroscopic material and have ability to exchange its moisture content with air. This study investigated the formaldehyde emission and moisture content change of four wood composites (particleboard (PB), medium density fiberboard (MDF), high density fiberboard (HDF), laminated HDF (L-HDF)) as a function of bake-out temperature and time. The composites were baked out for 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 21, and 28 days at temperatures of $20{\pm}2$, $35{\pm}2$, and $50{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ in a dry oven. The moisture content change was used to determine the emission bake-out of the composites. Best bake-out time results were obtained with after 7 days all composites. Formaldehyde emission values of composites decreased with decreasing moisture content for both temperatures. The formaldehyde emission results of bake-out temperature 35 and $50^{\circ}C$ showed a similar tendency.
In this study, we performed corrugation fluting experiments to examine the relationship between high-low corrugation of a corrugated medium and compressive strength of corrugated containers for food packaging. A low-grade corrugated medium was found to suffer from weak tensile resistance and to be prone to stealing, which tends to produce low corrugation. In contrast, a medium with a large corrugation deviation often caused slimming during fluting and produced irregular corrugations. Experiments of high-low corrugation distribution according to corrugated medium grades indicate that a high grade medium shows a smaller ratio of low corrugation. The thickness of corrugated fiberboard is weakly correlated to the basis weight of medium, yet positively correlated to the medium thickness (y=3.9732x+4.2712, $R^{2}=0.8142$) and inversely proportional to the medium density (y=-3.1213x+6.8736, $R^{2}=0.9919$). Compressive strength of a corrugated fiberboard box is low, if made of corrugated medium with large low corrugation distribution. Compressive strength showed 13% variation with respect to medium grades and 21% variation for various test samples. The corrugation fluting of a corrugated medium is related to physical properties such as basis thickness and density.
In the previous study, a variety of wood-based panels was thermally decomposed to manufacture carbonized boards that had been proved to be high abilities of insect and fungi repellence, corrosion and fire resistant, electronic shielding, and formaldehyde adsorption as well as sound absorption performance. Based on the previous study, carbonized medium density fiberboard (c-MDF) was chosen to improve sound absorption performance by holing and sanding process. Three different types of holes (cross shape, square shape, and line) with three different sanding thickness (1, 2, and 3 mm) were applied on c-MDF and then determined sound absorption coefficient (SAC). The control c-MDF without holes had 14% of SAC, however, those c-MDFs with holes had 16.01% (square shape), 15.68% (cross shape), and 14.25% (line) of SAC. Therefore, making holes on the c-MDF did not significantly affect on the SAC. As the degree of sanding increased, the SAC of c-MDF increased approximately 65% on sanding treated c-MDFs (21.5, 21.83, and 19.37%, respectively) compared to the control c-MDF (13%). Based on these results, composite sound absorbing panel was developed with c-MDF and MDF (11 mm). The noise reduction coefficient of composite sound absorbing panel was 0.45 which was high enough to certify as sound absorbing material.
In our study, the potential of okara as an ingredient of new bio-based adhesives was investigated for the production of fancy-veneered flooring boards. Okara was hydrolyzed by 1% sulfuric acid solution (AC) and 1% sodium hydroxide solution (AK). Phenol formaldehyde (PF) prepolymers were prepared as a cross-linker of okara hydrolyzates. Then, okara-based adhesive resins were formulated with 35% AC, 35% AK and 30% PF prepolymer on solid content basis. The adhesive resins were applied on high-density fiberboards (HDF) with the spread rate of $300g/m^2$. After that, oak fancy veneers are covered on the HDF, and then pressed with the pressure of $7kg/m^2$ at $120^{\circ}C$. The experimental variables were three mole ratios of formaldehyde to phenol (1.8, 2.1, 2.4), three assembly time (0, 10, 20 min), and two press time (90 sec, 120 sec), respectively. The fancy-veneered high-density fiberboards were tested by dry tensile strength, glueline failure by wetting and formaldehyde emission. Tensile strength of the boards exceeded the requirement of KS standard. The formaldehyde emissions were approached at the E0 level specified in KS standard. Based on these results, okara can be used as an ingredient of environmentally friendly adhesive resin systems for the production of flooring boards.
This study was carried out to improve the physico-mechanical properties of board products by applying the technique of high frequency heating, and find out the optimum conditions of high frequency heating, compared with the technique of hot platen heating. The possibility of isocyanate resin application to board production was also considered to solve the problem of free formaldehyde emission from urea resin which is generally used in wood industry. For this study, 30 mm thick MDP (medium density fiberboard) with isocyanate resin were manufactured by the techniques of hot platen heating, high frequency heating and the combination techniques of both heating methods, and compared in several point of views.
