  • This paper introduces a virtual signal injected maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control strategy for direct-torque-controlled five-phase interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drives. The key of the proposed method is that a high frequency signal is injected virtually into the stator flux linkage. Then the responding stator current is calculated and regulated to compensate the amplitude of the flux linkage. This is done according to the relationship between the stator current and the stator flux linkage. Since the proposed method does not inject any real signals into the motor, it does not cause any of the problems associated with high-frequency signals, such as additional copper loss and extra torque ripple. Simulation and experimental results are offered to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a measurement model based on PLS (Partial least square) method for blood pressures. Measurement system for blood pressure signals consisted of pressure sensor, va interface and embedded module. A mercury sphygmomanometer was connected with the measurement system through 3-way stopcock and used as reference of blood pressures. The blood pressure signals of 20 subjects were measured and tests were repeated 5 times per each subject. Total of 100 data were divided into a calibration set and a prediction set. The PLS models were developed to determine the systolic and the diastolic blood pressures. The PLS models were evaluated by the standard methods of the British Hypertension Society (BHS) protocol and the American Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). The results of the PLS models were compared with those of MAA (maximum amplitude algorithm). The measured blood pressures with PLS method were highly correlated to those with a mercury sphygmomanometer in the systolic ($R^2=0.85$) and the diastolic blood pressure ($R^2=0.84$). The results showed that the PLS models were the effective tools for blood pressure measurements with high accuracy, and satisfied the standards of the BHS protocol and the AAMI.

  • In this paper, a new approximated MAP algorithm for soft bit decision from QAM symbols is proposed for Gray Coded QAM signals, based on the Max-Log-MAP and a Gray coded QAM signal can be separated into independent two Gray coded PAM signal, M-PAM on I axis with M symbols and N-PAM on Q axis with N symbols. The Max-Log-MAP used distance comparisons between symbols to get the soft bit decision instead of mathematical exponential or logarithm functions. But in accordance with the increase of the number of symbols, the number of comparisons also increase with high complexity. The proposed algorithm is used with the Euclidean distance and constituted with plain arithmetic functions, thus we can know intuitively that the algorithm has low implementing complexity comparing to conventional ones.

  • This paper presents a novel method for power system harmonic estimation based on the Park transform. The proposed method firstly extends the signal to a group of three-phase signals in a-b-c coordinate. Then, a linear fitting based method is adopted to estimate the fundamental frequency. Afterwards, the Park transform is utilized to convert the three-phase signals from a-b-c coordinate to d-q-0 coordinate. Finally, the amplitude and phase of a harmonic component of interest can be calculated using the d-axis and q-axis components obtained. Simulation studies have been conducted using matrix laboratory (MATLAB) and power system computer aided design/electromagnetic transients including direct current (PSCAD/EMTDC). Simulation studies in MATLAB have considered three scenarios, i.e., no-frequency-deviation scenario, frequency-deviation scenario and the scenario in the presence of inter-harminics. The results have demonstrated that the proposed method achieves very high accuracy in frequency, phase and amplitude estimation under noisy conditions, and suffers little influence of the inter-harmonics. Moreover, comparison studies have proved that the proposed method is superior to FFT and Interpolated FFT with the Hanning Window (IpFFTHW). Finally, a popular case in PSCAD/EMTDC has been employed to further verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Predistorter linearizer having small size and good efficiency is frequently used in High Power Amplifier linearizer system. In this paper, the amount of IMD signal cancellation according to amplitude and phase of predistorter in predistorter type lincarizer is investigated by new experiment method. In the combining method of predistorter type, IMD signal is combined at the amplifier input port, the magnitude and phase of combining signals cannot be easily expected due to different magnitude and phase of incoming signals. By experiment, it is measured that Predistorter linearizer has lower amount of lMD signal cancellation than thoce of Feedforward linearizer at the same condition (amplitude and phase).

  • In this paper, a new trellis-coded differential unitary space-time modulation (TC-DUSTM) scheme based on amplitude/phase-shift-keying (APSK) signals is proposed. In particular, the design criterion of the trellis coding is proposed to combine the trellis coding and DUSTM scheme based on APSK constellation. From the computer simulations, we verify the superiority of the proposed TC-DUSTM based on APSK signals at the higher transmission rate. In addition, the proposed scheme can suppress the irreducible error of the differential scheme.

  • Lock-on characteristics of the flow around a circular cylinder performing a rotationally oscillation with a relatively high forcing frequency have been investigated experimentally using flow visualization and hot-wire measurements. Dominant parameters are Reynolds number (Re), amplitude of oscillation $(\theta_A)$, and frequency ratio $F_R=f_f\;/\;f_n$, where $f_f$ is the forcing frequency and if is the natural frequency of vortex shedding. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of $Re=4.14\times10^3,\;\pi/15\leq\theta_A\leq\pi/3$, and $F_R=1.0$. The effects of this active control technique on the lock-on flow regime of the cylinder wake were evaluated through wake velocity measurements and spectral analysis of hot-wire signals. The rotary oscillation modified the flow structure of near wake significantly. The lock-on phenomenon was found to occur in the range of frequency encompassing the natural vortex shedding frequency. In addition, when the amplitude of oscillation is less than a certain value, the lock-on phenomenon was occurred only at $F_R=1.0$. The lock-on range expanded and vortex formation length decreased as the amplitude of oscillation increases. The rotary oscillation generated small-scale vortex structure just near the cylinder surface.

  • As a continuation of a previous work by Park et al. (2006), we have developed a two-element radio interferometer that can measure both the phase and amplitude of a visibility function. Two small radio telescopes with diameters of 2.3 m are used as before, but this time an external reference oscillator is shared by the two telescopes so that the local oscillator frequencies are identical. We do not use a hardware correlator; instead we record signals from the two telescopes onto a PC and then perform software correlation. Complex visibilities are obtained toward the sun at ${\lambda}\;=\;21\;cm$, for 24 baselines with the use of the earth rotation and positional changes of one element, where the maximum baseline length projected onto UV plane is ${\sim}\;90{\lambda}$. As expected, the visibility amplitude decreases with the baseline length, while the phase is almost constant. The image obtained by the Fourier transformation of the visibility function nicely delineates the sun, which is barely resolved due to the limited baseline length. The experiment demonstrates that this system can be used as a "toy" interferometer at least for the education of (under)graduate students.

  • Hard disk drives operate in various environmental conditions. Thus, it is necessary to assess the reliability of the head/disk interface under these conditions. In this work, stiction and acoustic emission signals were investigated under different temperature, humidity, and ambient pressure conditions. Also, track average amplitude was observed for disk failure in N$_2$environment. It is shown that failure of the head/disk interface occurs more readily at high temperature and low ambient pressure conditions.

  • It has been known that 1/f noise of MOSFET is generated by superposition of random telelgraph signals (RTS). In this study, jitters and phase noise caused by 1/f noise of MOSFET are analysed with RTS supplied to all of the nodes of the CMOS ring oscillator under investigation. Through the analysis of jitters and jitter ratios with varying values of the amplitude of RTS, it is found that the jitters and the jitter ratios are proportional to the amplitude of RTS. And the analysis of FFT of the output of the ring oscillator reveals that the jitters are closely related to the phase noise of the high order harmonics of the ring oscillator outputs.
