  • Recently, researches on High-Volume Fly ash Cement(HVFC), which is replacing high portion of cement to fly ash, have been actively conducted to reduce $CO_2$ formation. Though HVFC has various advantages, low strength development in early ages is pointed out as the biggest problem in the application of fly ash. In order to overcome such limitations, this study investigated the hydration and compressive strength characteristics of HVFC paste depending on the fly ash content with the mixing ratio varying from 0 to 80 %. Experimental results show that the HVFC paste with low water-binder ratio can overcome the limitation of low compressive strength at early ages. Also, from the result of heat flow delay, 50 % of fly ash weight ratio was the critical point of the filler effect.

  • It is known that the best way to recycle fly ash is to use in concrete. It is impossible to bury in the ground this fly ash recently, so it is trying to use high volume fly ash concrete. Nevertheless, recent main research topics are focused in the part of material only. However, it is necessary to perform the researches about elasticity modulus, stress-strain relationship and structural behavior. Therefore, in this paper, 18 test members were manufactured with 3 test variables, namely fly ash replacement ratio 0, 35, 50%, concrete compressive strength 20, 40, 60MPa and 2 tensile steel ratio. 18 test members were tested for flexural behavior. From the test results, there were no differences between 35, 50% high volume fly ash cement concrete and ordinary concrete without fly ash (FA=0%). In order to evaluate the HVFAC flexural behavior, Analytical model was proposed and the computer program was developed. There were no differences between test results and analysis results. So, the proposed analytical model was reasonable.

  • The major shortcoming of concrete in most of the applications is its high self-weight and thermal conductivity. The emerging trend to overcome these shortcomings is the use of foam-concrete, which is a lightweight concrete consisting of cement, filler, water and a foaming agent. This study aims at the development of a cost-effective high-volume fly-ash foam-concrete insulation wall cladding for existing buildings using natural fiber like rice straw in different proportions. The paper reports the results of systematic studies on various mechanical, acoustic, thermal and durability properties of foam-concrete with and without replacement of cement by fly-ash. Fly-ash replaces 60 percent by weight of cement in foam-concrete. The water-solid ratio of 0.3, the filler ratio of 1:1 by weight, and the density of 1100 kg/㎥ (approx.) are fixed for all the mixes. Rice straw at 1%, 3% and 5% by weight of cement was added to improve the thermal and acoustic efficiency. From the investigations, it was inferred that the strength properties were increased with fly-ash replacement up to 1% rice straw addition. In furtherance, addition of rice straw and fly-ash resulted in improved acoustic and thermal properties.

  • This research aimed to investigate the influence of high-volume mineral admixtures (MAs), i.e., fly ash and slag, on the hydration characteristics and microstructures of cement pastes. Degree of cement hydration was quantified by the loss-on-ignition technique and degree of pozzolanic reaction was determined by a selective dissolution method. The influence of MAs on the pore structure of paste was measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry. The results showed that the hydration properties of the blended pastes were a function of water to binder ratio, cement replacement level by MAs, and curing age. Pastes containing fly ash exhibited strongly reduced early strength, especially for mix with 45% fly ash. Moreover, at a similar cement replacement level, slag incorporated cement paste showed higher degrees of cement hydration and pozzolanic reaction than that of fly ash incorporated cement paste. Thus, the present study demonstrates that high substitution rates of slag for cement result in better effects on the short- and long-term hydration properties of cement pastes.

  • In this study, to determine the shear properties, experiments on the shear behavior of plain concrete with the high volume fly ash cement by double shear test were performed. Test parameters are fly ash content and concrete compressive strength. Experimental results show the tendency that the shear strength similarly increases with an increase in the compressive strength as is generally known. The concrete shear strength formula proposed in the concrete structural design code of KCI shows a similar tendency to the experimental results, and It is expected that the shear strength of the high volume fly ash cement concrete can be applied with the formula given in the concrete structural design code of KCI. When considering the fly ash content ratio, the shear strength of high volume fly ash cement concrete according to fly ash conctent ratio shows as having a far greater correlation than if it is not considered to fly ash content ratio. So, even though existing code can be appliable for non consideration of the fly ash content ratio, we proposed a formula that is much more relevant than that of concrete structural design code of KCI.

  • This study evaluated durability through measurement of substituted test piece's pH degree and experiments of neutralization. Comparing and evaluating cared test piece's pH degrees which we got before the neutralization and after the neutralization. After evaluating neutralization depth through neutralization, evaluating neutralization properties by Fly Ash replacement ratio. pH degree was decreased by cement replacement ratio of Fly Ash. And in the case of substitution of the same amount of Fly Ash, fine aggregate replacement ratio was increased. When the test piece, which had been cared in high temperature, was promoted to neutralization, Among the test piece which was replaced with Fly Ash 40%, the test piece which has high rate of fine aggregate proved opposition of neutralization Through the test, Ⅰ summarized that the test piece cared in high temperature was mostly effected by compress strength, the test piece cared in low temperature was mostly effected by pH degree.

  • The effect of fly ash to prevent detrimental expansion due to alkali -silica reaction was investigated through the ASTM C 1260 method that is one of the most commonly used method because results can be obtained within about 16 days. Reactive aggregate used is a netamorphic rock and sedimentary rock. The replacement proportions of portland cement by fly ash were respectively 0, 5, 10, 15, 25 and 35 percent. Expansion of mortar bars due to alkali-silica reaction decreased with the increase of fly ash content. The results show that the expansion due to alkali-silica reaction is dramatically reduced in the presence of high volume fly ash. When the fly ash content examine from all angles (strength and a flow), the replacement proportions of fly ash is about $25\%$ in order to control on expansion.

  • Recently, the coal-ash production has been increased by increase of consumption of electric power. So it is important to secure a reclaimed land from pollution and develop practical application of coal ash. This is an experimental study to compare and analyze the properties of concrete using high volume of coal ash (including fly ash and bottom ash) as a part of fine aggregate. For this purpose, the mix proportions of concrete according to replacement ratio of coal ash (10, 20, 35, 50%) were selected. And then air content, slump, setting time, bleeding content, chloride content, compressive strength and carbonation test were performed. According to test results, it was found that the bleeding content of concrete using the coal ash decreased according to increase of replacement ratio. And the chloride content of concrete using the bottom ash as a part of fine aggregate increased as the replacement ratio of bottom ash increased, but it is satisfied with the total chloride content of concrete recommended by KCI - $0.3kg/m^3$ below. Also, the compressive strength of concrete using the bottom ash was similar to that of plain concrete(BA 0) after 28days of curing and the carbonation depth of concrete increased as the replacement ratio increased. However, the carbonation depth of concrete using the fly ash decreased as the replacement ratio of fly ash increased.
