The most controversial topics in plasma sprayed ceramic coating system are recently mechanical properties such as bond strength, cohesive strength, toughness and so on. Determination of bond strength of coatings is one of the most important problems. In the industry, the bond strength of coating system has been estimated by Pull-off test(ASTM standard C633-79). But, without a fixed jig and specimen, it is impossible to obtain the bond strength. Therefore, it is necessary to study the critical fracture load on interface of the coating by indentation test. Because the critical fracture load plays an important role in evaluating the bond strength for plasma sprayed ceramic coating system. So, we have estimated critical fracture load in plasma sprayed ceramic coating system, and it was shown that inverse relationship between the cross-section hardness of coating and the critical fracture load(Pc). In case of the high load(1kgf, 2kgf) in $Al_{2}O_{3}+13%TiO_{2}$, it was found that the critical point(Pco), which the coating was broken on.
The elastic-plastic fracture toughness J_{Ic}$ of submerged arc welded structural steel $SB_{41}$ which has the properties of low strength and high ductility was discussed, especially paying attention to a comparison between two methods recommended by ASTM and JSME. $J_{IC}$ tests were carried out with compact specimens by means of R-curve, SZW, ultrasonic and electric potential methods. Based on the investigations in this study, the results obtained are as follows; (1) The JSME R-curve method gave the smallest $J_{IC}$ values which were physically closest to the crack initiation and seemed to be more practical and stable procedure between the two R-curve methods. (2) The JSME SZW method tended to slightly overestimate the $J_{IC}$ values at initiation of ductile tearing. (3) The ultrasonic and electric potential methods which also had a tendency to overestimate these $J_{IC}$ values were confirmed to be applicable and useful in determining these values. (4) The $J_{IC}$ values by the JSME R-curve method were 18.06 kgf/mm and 17.25kgf/ mm for the smooths and the side grooved CT specimen respectively.
STD 61 steel has been widely used for tools, metallic mold and die for press working because of its favorable mechanical properties such as high toughness, and creep strength as well as excellent oxidation resistance. The STD 61 tool steel coated with TiN and ZrN by sputtering results in improvement of wear and corrosion resistance. In this study, surface characteristics of TiN and ZrN film coated STD 61 by sputtering were studied by using FE-SEM, EDS, XRD, and XRR and nanoindentation tests. From the results of surface characteristics of coated specimen, the ZrN coated surface showed finer granular than that of TiN coated surface. The coated layer structures of ZrN and TiN were grown to (111) and (200) preferred orientation. From the results of XRR test for surface roughness, density and growth rate of coating film, surface roughness and growth rate of ZrN coated film revealed lower values those of TiN coated film, whereas density of ZrN coated film showed higher values than that of TiN coated film. From the nanohardness and elastic modulus test, nanohardness value and elastic modulus of ZrN coated film became higher than those of TiN coated film.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the compressive behavior and characteristics of amorphous metallic fiber-reinforced concrete (AMFRC). Compressive tests were carried out for two primary parameters: fiber volume fractions ($V_f$) of 0, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.8 %; and design compressive strengths of 27, 35, and 50 MPa at the age of 28 days. Test results indicated that the addition of amorphous metallic fibers in concrete mixture enhances the toughness, strain corresponding to peak stress, and Poisson's ratio at high stress level, while the compressive strength at the 28-th day is less affected and the modulus of elasticity is reduced. Based on the experimental results, prediction equations were proposed for the modulus of elasticity and strain at peak stress as functions of fiber volume fraction and concrete compressive strength. In addition, an analytical model representing the entire stress-strain relationship of AMFRC in compression was proposed and validated with test results for each concrete mix. The comparison showed that the proposed modeling approach can properly simulate the entire stress-strain relationship of AMFRC as well as the primary mechanical properties in compression including the modulus of elasticity and strain at peak stress.
Borosilicate glass(GVB-Solutions in glass, 2mm, Germany) was prepared in the composition of $80.4SiO_2-4.2Na_2O-2.4Al_2O_3-13.0B_2O_3$. The 2-step crystallization was performed around $584^{\circ}C$ of glass transition temperature ($T_g$), and $774^{\circ}C$ of crystallization temperature($T_c$). The maximum nucleation rate was $8.8{\time}10^9/mm^3{\cdot}hr$ at $600^{\circ}C$ and the maximum crystal growth rate was 3.5nm/min at $750^{\circ}C$. The maximum mechanical properties were observed at 22.8% of volume fraction, the strength, hardness and fracture toughness was 555MPa, $752kg/mm^2$, $1.082MPa{\cdot}mm^{1/2}$. The crystal size of 177nm which has volume fraction of 22.8% showed maximum strength of 562MPa, it is about 157% higher than parent borosilicate glass. From these results, the crystallized borosilicate glass can be applied weight lighting of bullet proof materials.
Various Sialon ceramics were fabricated by hot-pressing mixtures of $Si_3N_4$ with additive $Y_2O_3$ and $Al_2O_3$. The polished specimen of SiAlON $I{\sim}III$ went on increasing in strength by heat treatment, heat treated non-polished specimen were similar or up to polished specimen in strength. The polished specimen of both SiAlON IV and V showed a very high strength, but were not Increasing of strength by heat treatment. All specimens were fractured on the surface and at the inner flaws. Surface fractures were initiated from the polished surface flaw and corner flaw. Inner fractures were initiated from an internal defect.
As toughness-investigation to improve brittleness of existing epoxy resin, elastic-factor of elastic epoxy using TMA (Thermomechanical Analysis), DMTA (Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis) and FESEM (Field Emission Scanning Electron Microsope) for structure-images analysis were investigated. A range of measurement temperature of the TMA, DMTA was changed from -20[$^{\circ}C$] to 200[$^{\circ}C$]. When modifier was ratio of 0[phr], 20[phr], 35[phr], glass transition temperature (Tg) of elastic epoxy was measured through thermal analysis devices. Also, it was investigated thermal expansion coefficient ($\alpha$), modulus and loss factor through DMTA. In addition, it was analyzed structure through FSSEM and made sure elastic-factor of elastic epoxy visually. As thermal analysis results, 20[phr] was superior than 30[phr] thermally and mechanically. Specially, thermal expansion coefficient, modulus, damping properties were excellent. By structure-images analysis through FESEM, we found elastic-factor of elastic epoxy that is not existing epoxy, and proved high impact.
Creep characteristic is an important failure mechanism when evaluating engineering materials that are soft material as polymers or used as mechanical elements at high temperatures. One of the popular thermo-plastic polymers, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) which is used broadly for machine elements material, as it has excellent mechanical properties such as impact resistance, toughness and stiffness compared to other polymers, was studied for creep characteristic at different levels of stress and temperatures. From the experimental results, the creep limit of ABS at room temperature is 80 % of tensile strength which is higher than PE and lower than PC or PMMA. Also the creep limits decreased to linearly as the temperatures increased, up to $80^{\circ}C$ which is the softening temperature of Butadiene ($82^{\circ}C$). Also the secondary stage of creep among the three creep stages for different levels of stress and temperature was non-existent which occurred for many metals by strain hardening effect.
The variation in microstructure and mechanical properties during heat treatment was examined in a series of 0.27% C-1.0% Si-1.5% Mn steels with chromium contents in the range of 0 to 1.0 wt%. It was found that chromium decreased the martensite packet size through the austenite grain refinement and increased tensile strength in the as-quenched steel, about 70 MPa per 1.0 wt%. The 0.27% C-1.0% Si-1.5% Mn-1.0% Cr steel showed tensile strength of 1700 MPa in the as-quenched steel. The 0.27% C-1.0% Si-1.5% Mn-1.0% Cr steel revealed a full martensitic structure after air cooling from $900^{\circ}C$ to room temperature, showing air hardening characteristics. Tempering at $150^{\circ}C$ slightly decreased the tensile strength and increased elongation, which is in a good agreement with impact toughness result.
Misch metal (rare earth element, Ce, La, Nd, Pr) which has large influence on high-temperature stability and toughness was added to the Al-5%Ni-5%Mg alloy, and squeeze casting was used for Al-5%Ni-5%Mg-(Mm) alloys. The effect of applied pressure and misch metal additions on mechanical properties in Al-5%Ni-5%Mg alloy by direct squeeze casting has been investigated. The applied pressure were 0 MPa(gravity casting), 25, 50 and 75 MPa. Squeeze-cast Al-5%Ni-5%Mg-(Mm) alloys had better mechanical properties than those of non-pressurized cast alloys because of the increased cooling rate by the application of pressure during solidification. By the addition of misch metal in Al-5%Ni-5%Mg alloy, better combination of strength and elongation was obtained. The addition of 0.3%Mm in Al-5%Ni-5%Mg alloy improved the heat resistant property due to the formation of fine eutectic phases.
