  • The high temperature superconductivity(HTS) cable must be cooled below the nitrogen liquefaction temperature to applicate the cable in power generation and transmi-ssion system under the superconducting state. To obtain superconducting state. a reliable cryocooler system is required. Structural and thermal design have been performed to design cryocooler system operated with reverse Brayton cycle using gas neon as refrigerant. This cryocooler system consists of compressor. recuperator. coldbox. control valves and has 1 kW cooling capacity. Heat loss calculation was conducted for the given cryocooler system by considering the conduction and radiation through the multi-layer insulation(MLI) and high vacuum. The results can be summarized as: conduction heat loss is 7 W in valves and access port and radiation heat loss is 18 W through the surface of cryocooler. The full design specifications were discussed and the results were applied to construct in house HTS cable cooling system.

  • It becomes difficult and high in cost to construct new ducts and/or tunnels for power cables in metropolitan areas. This paper presents possible applications of an HTS superconducting power cables for transmitting electric power in metropolitan areas. Reflected were its important distinction such as compactness for installation in underground ducts and considerably high efficiency compared with present underground cables. In this paper, system modeling, transmission capacity and voltage class of compact HTS cables which should be applied to existing ducts were reviewed. Based on this, the following items on urban transmission system are examined. (1) A method of constructing a model system to introduce high temperature superconducting cables to metropolitan areas is presented. (2)The maximum outer diameter of HTS cables to be accommodated in exiting ducts is calculated based on the design standards for current cable ducts. (3)The voltage level that can be accommodated by existing ducts is examined.

  • This paper presents the basic quench protection idea for the HTS(High-Temperature Superconducting) cable. In Korea power system, the transfer capability of transmission line is limited by the voltage stability, HTS cable could be one of the countermeasure to enhance the transfer limit with its higher current capacity and lower impedance[1]. However, the quench characteristic makes not only HTS cable to loss its superconductivity, but also change the impedance of the transmission line and power system operating condition dramatically. This pheonominum threats HTS cable safety as well as power system security, therefore a proper protection scheme and security control counterplan have to be established before HTS cable implementation. In this paper, the quench characteristics of HTS cable for the fault current based on heat balance equation was established and a proper protection method regarding conventional protection system was suggested.

  • As power demand increases gradually, the call for underground transmission system increases. But it is very difficult and high in cost to construct new ducts and/or tunnels for power cables in metropolitan areas. HTS (High Temperature Superconducting) cable has the several useful characteristics such as increased power density. Therefore HTS cable can allow more power to be moved in existing ducts, which means very large economical and environmental benefits. In this paper, we carried out investigation for Application of 22kV class HTS cable in Korean utility networks. The results show that the HTS cable is applicable to replace IPB in pumping-up power plant, withdrawal line in distributed generation, withdrawal line in complex power plant, and conventional under ground cable. Finally, as the cost of HTS wire and refrigeration drops, the technical and economical potential of HTS cable is evaluated positively.

  • As power systems grow more complex and power demands increase, the need of underground transmission system is increasing gradually. But it is very difficult and high in cost to construct new ducts and/or tunnels for power cables in metropolitan areas. HTS (High Temperature Superconducting) cable can carry very high current densities with strongly reduced conductor loss and allow high power transmission at reduced voltage. Therefore HTS cable can transfer more power to be moved in existing ducts, which means very large economical and environmental benefits. A development project for a 22kV class HTS cable is ongoing at a research centers, and the cable manufacturer in Korea.

  • Recently, cable conductors composed of numerous coated conductors have been developed to transport huge current for large-scale applications, for example accelerators and fusion reactors. Various cable conductors such as CORC (Conductor on round core), Roebel Cable, and TSTC (Twisted stacked tape cable) have been designed and tested to apply for large-scale applications. But, these cable conductors cannot improve the engineering critical current density (Je) because they are made by simple stacking of coated conductors. In this study, multi-HTS (High temperature superconductor) layers on one substrate (MHOS) wire was fabricated to increase the engineering critical current density by using the exfoliation of superconducting layer from substrate and silver diffusion bonding method. By the repetition of these processes, the 10 m long 6-layer MHOS conductor was successfully fabricated without any intermediate layers like buffer or solder. 6-layer MHOS conductor exhibited a high critical current of 2,460A/12mm-w. and high engineering critical current density of 1,367A/mm2 at liquid nitrogen temperature.

  • In attempts to closely study the effect of high efficiency, friendly environment HTS(High Temperature Superconducting) cable and SFCL(Superconducting Fault Current Limiters) on power system, several projects were carried out around the world. Promising results have been achieved in terms of cable capacity and reliability. commercial HTS cable and SFCL, however, must not only be only be feasible, but meet practical requirements as well. To facilitate the transition of HTS cable technology from the Lab. to the Real Grid, a New project for applying 22.9kV HTS cables and SFCL to the commercial Power Grid supported by Government has just started in KEPCO. Target of this project is to operate two 22.9kV, 50MVA, 150MVA HTS cables and two 22.9kV 630A, 3000A SFCL in a KEPCO Grid in order to demonstrate its reliability and stable operation. This paper will present the technology for selecting appropriate site and its plan for installation & operating of 22.9kV HTS cables & SFCL in KEPCO Grid.

  • This paper describes the application scheme of resistive HTS-FCL(High Temperature Superconducting-Fault Current Limiter) on future new distribution system. Future new distribution system means the power system to which applies the 22.9kV HTS cable with low-voltage and mass-capacity characteristics replacing the 154kv conventional cable in addition to HTS transformer and HTS-FCL. The fault current of future new distribution system will increase greatly because of the inherent characteristics of HTS transformer/cable and applications of distributed generations and spot networks and so on. This means that the HTS-FCL is necessary to reduce the fault current below the breaking capacity. This paper studies the appropriate location, parameters and the influences of HTS-FCL on future new distribution system. Finally, this paper suggests the reasonable basic parameters of resistive HTS-FCL for future KEPCO new distribution system.
