Variations of temperature and velocity fields in a Hele-Shaw Convection Cell (HSC) were measured using a holographic interferometry and PIV technique with varying Rayleigh number. Experimental results show a steady flow pattern at low Rayleigh numbers and a time-dependent periodic flow at high Rayleigh numbers. Two different measurement methods of holographic interferometry, double-exposure method and real-time method, were employed to measure the temperature field variations of HSC convective flow. In the double-exposure method, unwanted waves can be eliminated and reconstruction images are clear, but transient flow structure cannot be observed clearly. On the other hand, transient flow can be observed and reconstructed well using the real-time method. PIV results show that flow inside the HSC is periodic and the oscillating state is well matched with the temperature field results. The holographic interferometry and PIV techniques employed in this study are useful for analyzing the unsteady convective thermal fluid flows.
Calcium silicate hydrate(C-S-H) is the principal binding phase that controls the strength and thermal stability of concrete. However, the effects of high temperature on the lattice structure and interatomic structure of C-S-H remains poorly understood due to its nanocrystallinity. This study aims to elucidate the change in interatomic distance of synthetic C-S-H with different Ca/Si molar ratios after exposure to high temperature via high energy X-ray scattering experiment which is a powerful analytical tool for amorphous materials.
Flexible production system has been expanded to all sectors of economy with the change of labor market and diversification of employment. The unstable employment with irregular work has replaced stable employment with regular work. This study has investigate the impact pathway of the type of employment on health status especially ill-health symptoms experiences. Among the first Korean Working Conditions Survey data, the employee's response data was used to analyze the path way with multiple regression analysis. The result has shown the direct effect of the type of employment on ill-health symptoms experience. Indirect effect of the type of employment was found the pathway via the exposure to noise, high temperature, low temperature, dust, skin contact to chemicals, painful posture, heavy material handling, standing position, repetitive movement of hands. However the exposure to the other hazardous factors such as organic solvent, wholebody vibration, radiation, lifting people, infectious materials were not influenced by the type of employment.
In order to assess the impact of climate change on irrigation reservoirs, climate exposure (EI), sensitivity (SI), and potential impact (PI) were evaluated for 1,651 reservoirs nationwide. Climate exposure and sensitivity by each reservoir were calculated using data collected from 2011 to 2020 for seven proxy variables (e.g. annual rainfall) and six proxy variables (e.g. irrigation days), respectively. The potential impact was calculated as the weighted sum of climate exposure and sensitivity, and was classified into four levels: 'Low (PI<0.4)', 'Medium (PI<0.6)', 'High (PI<0.8)', and 'Critical (PI≥0.8)'. The result showed that both the climate exposure index and the sensitivity index were on average high in Daegu and Gyeongbuk with high temperature and low rainfall. About 79.8% of irrigation reservoirs in Daegu, Gyeongbuk, and Ulsan with high climate exposure and sensitivity resulted in a 'High' level of potential impact. On the contrary, 64.5% of the study reservoirs in Gyeongnam and Gangwon showed 'Low' in potential impact. In further studies, it is required to reorganize the proxy variables and the weights in accordance with practical alternatives for improving adaptive capacity to drought, and it is expected to contribute to establishing a framework for vulnerability assessment of an irrigation reservoir.

The productivity of rice has been influenced by various abiotic factors including temperature which cause to limitations to rice yield and quality. Rice yield and quality are adversely affected by high temperature globally. In the present study, four Korean four cultivars such as Dongan, Ilpum, Samkwang, Chucheong were investigated in order to explore molecular mechanisms of high temperature at seedling stage. Rice seedlings grown at $28/20^{\circ}C$ (day/night) were subjected to 7-day exposure to $38/28^{\circ}C$ for high-temperature stress, followed by 2-D based proteomic analysis on biological triplicates of each treatment. The growth characteristics demonstrated that Dongan is tolerant while Ilpum is sensitive to high-temperature stress. High temperature has an adverse effect in the seedling stage both in high temperature sensitive and tolerant cultivar. Two-dimensional gels stained with silver staining, a total of 722 differential expressed protein spots (${\geq}1.5-fold$) were identified using Progenesis SameSpot software. However, a total of 38 differentially expressed protein spots were analyzed by LTQ-FT-ICR MS. Of these, 9 proteins were significantly increased while 10 decreased under high-temperature treatment. Significant changes were associated with the proteins involved in the carbohydrate metabolism, photosynthesis, and stress responses. Proteome results revealed that high-temperature stress had an inhibitory effect on carbon fixation, ATP production, and photosynthetic machinery pathway. The expression level of mRNA is significantly correlated with the results obtained in the proteome investigation. Taken together, these findings provide a better understanding of the high-temperature resistance by proteomic approaches, providing valuable insight into improving the high-temperature stress tolerance in the global warming epoch.
This paper presents experimental results on bond-slip behavior of steel reinforced high-strength concrete (SRHC) after exposure to elevated temperatures. Three parameters were considered in this test: (a) high temperatures (i.e., 20℃, 200℃, 400℃, 600℃, 800℃); (b) concrete strength (i.e., C60, C70, C80); (c) anchorage length (i.e., 250 mm, 400 mm). A total of 17 SRHC specimens subjected to high temperatures were designed for push out test. The load-slip curves at the loading end and free end were obtained, the influence of various variation parameters on the ultimate bond strength and residual bond strength was analyzed, in addition, the influence of elevated temperatures on the invalidation mechanism was researched in details. Test results show that the shapes of load-slip curves at loading ends and free ends are similar. The ultimate bond strength and residual bond strength of SRHC decrease first and then recover partly with the temperature increasing. The bond strength is proportional to the concrete strength, and the bond strength is proportional to the anchoring length when the temperature is low, while the opposite situation occurs when the temperature is high. What's more, the bond damage of specimens with lower temperature develops earlier and faster than the specimens with higher temperature. From these experimental findings, the bond-slip constitutive formula of SRHC subjected to elevated temperatures is proposed, which fills well with test data.

Plasma spraying technique was used to fabricate functionally graded coating (FGC) of NiCrAIY/YSZ 8wt%$Y_2O_3-ZrO_2$ on a Co-base superalloy (HAYNES 188) substrate. Six layers were coated on the substrate for building up compositionally graded architecture. Conventional thermal barrier coating (TBC) of NiCrAIY/SZ with sharp interface was also fabricated. As-coated FGC and TBC samples were exposed at the temperature of $1100^{\circ}C$ for 10, 50, 100 hours in air. Microstructural change of thermally exposed samples was examined. Pores and microcracks were formed in YSZ layer due to evolution of thermal internal stress at high temperature. The amount of pores and microcracks in YSZ layer were increased with increasing exposure time at high temperature. High temperature oxidation of coatings occurred mainly at the NiCrAIY/YSZ interface. In comparison with the case of TBC. the increased area of the NiCrAIY/YSZ interface in FGC is likely to attribute to forming the higher amount of oxides.
An experiment was conducted to determine effects of oral administration of $Diakur^{TM}$ (an additive of glucose and electrolytes for young calves) on growth performance and some physiological responses in male broilers reared in a high temperature. A 2 by 3 factorial arrangement test of 2 temperatures (24 and $36^{\circ}C$) and 3 levels of oral administration of the glucose and electrolytes additive, $Diakur^{TM}$, (0, 150 and 300 mg/day/100 gBW) were applied in the experiment. Male broiler chicks (2 weeks of age) were assigned to six groups and received dietary and temperature treatments for 7 days. The additive of glucose and electrolytes was suspended with water and intubated into crop twice a day (08:00 and 17:00). Oral administration of the additive prevented decreases in food intake and growth rates in broilers due to exposure of the hot environment. Oral administration of the additive also improved a lowered electrolyte ($Na^+$ + $K^+$ - $Cl^-$) balance in plasma, low mitogenic response of blood mononuclear cell and an increase in glucose concentration due to exposure to the high environmental temperature. Oral administration of the additive increased rectal temperature regardless of environmental temperatures. On the other hand, blood pH, $pCO_2$ and $HCO_3$ - concentration, and plasma creatine kinase activity were not affected by the oral administration. The results suggested that oral administration of the glucose and electrolytes additive, $Diakur^{TM}$ during heat stress did not only prevent decrease in growth performance, but also normalized some physiological and immunological responses in male broilers.
Bonded joints have proven their performance against conventional joining processes such as welding, riveting and bolting. The single-lap joint is the most widely used to characterize adhesive joints in tensile-shear loadings. However, the high stress concentrations in the adhesive joint due to the non-linearity of the applied loads generate a bending moment in the joint, resulting in high stresses at the adhesive edges. Geometric optimization of the bonded joint to reduce this high stress concentration prompted various researchers to perform geometric modifications of the adhesive and adherends at their free edges. Modifying both edges of the adhesive (spew) and the adherends (bevel) has proven to be an effective solution to reduce stresses at both edges and improve stress transfer at the inner part of the adhesive layer. The majority of research aimed at improving the geometry of the plate and adhesive edges has not considered the effect of temperature and water absorption in evaluating the strength of the joint. The objective of this work is to analyze, by the finite element method, the stress distribution in an adhesive joint between two 2024-T3 aluminum plates. The effects of the adhesive fillet and adherend bevel on the bonded joint stresses were taken into account. On the other hand, degradation of the mechanical properties of the adhesive following its exposure to moisture and temperature was found. The results clearly showed that the modification of the edges of the adhesive and of the bonding agent have an important role in the durability of the bond. Although the modification of the adhesive and bonding edges significantly improves the joint strength, the simultaneous exposure of the joint to temperature and moisture generates high stress concentrations in the adhesive joint that, in most cases, can easily reach the failure point of the material even at low applied stresses.
Laying hens kept in different light and dark periods of the day at high ambient temperature of maximum $35^{\circ}C$ were challenged to $38.5{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ acute heat 3 hours daily for 7 consecutive days. They were found to have a significant (p<0.01) acclimatization response (rectal temperature) to heat stress during the dark period compared to those exposed to the same temperature during the light period. The blood pH was not significantly different. The partial pressure of carbon dioxide ($PCO_2$) was significantly high (p<0.01) except in day 4. Similarly the blood bicarbonate ($HCO_3$) concentration was significantly high (p<0.05) except day three and day four. Acute heat exposure in the first day increased the body temperature in both groups (Light and Dark) reaching $44^{\circ}C$, followed by gradual reduction in body temperature. The dark treated birds showed rapid reduction in body temperature ($42.88^{\circ}C$) and adaptation to high temperature during days 2-4 but that this was lost to some extent in days 6-8. However this was not obvious in the light treated birds. It is concluded that darkness reduce hyperthermia and enhance acclimatization responses during acute heat stress.
