Dynamic Analysis of Air Operated Globe Valve (공기구동형 글로브밸브의 동적거동해석)

  • Although the globe is the most typical valve to control high pressure drop in piping system, it is very hard to figure out the characteristics of flow field in the globe valve caused by its complex geometry. So there is very few studies to find out flow characteristics of globe valve. In this study, numerical analysis for flow field in the globe valve is carried out using the Fluent code which is commercial CFD program. Pressure drop through the globe valve is also measured to verify the results come from numerical analysis. Comparing experiment with numerical analysis, two results are very close to each other. Also finite element method is employed to evaluate the safety of globe valve using the results coming from the flow analysis to make the boundary conditions for FEM analysis. Maximum stress appears on the inlet channel of valve where inlet flow runs against. Because the maximum stress between 11.7 MPa to 3.6 MPa is within 3.4% of yield stress. the structural safety of valve is considered to be very sound

Numerical Study of Compression Waves Propagating Through Porous Walls (다공벽을 전파하는 압축파에 관한 수치해석적 연구)

  • When a high-speed railway train enters a tunnel, a compression wave is generated ahead of the train and propagates through the tunnel, compressing and accelerating the rest air in front of the wave. At the exit of the tunnel, an impulsive wave is emitted outward toward the surrounding, which causes a positive impulsive noise like a kind of sonic boom produced by a supersonic aircraft. With the advent of high-speed train, such an impulsive noise can be large enough to cause the noise problem, unless some attempts are made to alleviate its pressure levels. In the purpose of the impulsive noise reduction, the present study calculated the effect of porous walls on the compression wave propagating into a model tunnel. Two-dimensional unsteady compressible equations were differenced by using a Piecewise Linear Method. Calculation results show that the cavity/porous wall system is very effective for a compression wave with a large nonlinear effect. The porosity of 30% is most effective for the reduction of the maximum pressure gradient of the compression wave front. The present calculation results are in a good agreement with experimental ones obtained previously.

  • As the height of the building increases, the stack effect in stairwell that is main facilities for evacuation becomes stronger. While the pressure rise in stairwell causes difficulties on opening the door for evacuation and has effect on smoke control system, reduction of stack effect will be necessary for providing more safe evacuation environment. The field experiments on pressure field in high-rise building are carried out to present reduction method of stack effect and the numerical analyses using network model are proceeded to design quantitatively the reduction method. As the air flow supplied from outside in lower stair and exhausted to outside in upper stair is formed in stairwell, the stack effect in stairwell is expected to be decreased.

  • In restroom on high-rise building, exhaust system comprising the blower and duct is installed to discharge the odor and the water is suppled. Thus the restroom with fire and flame protection system may be used as refuge area in a fire situation. The study presents the smoke-proof system which operates such that the exhaust system to discharge the odor is converted to air supply system and appropriate pressure difference between the restroom and the accommodation is maintained. Also real-scale test facilities of smoke-proof system for refuge space using a restroom are installed on 5-story smoke control test building and experiments for evaluating the operational performance of smoke-proof system are carried out.

Enhanced nitrogen removal from high-strength ammonia containing wastewater using a membrane aerated bioreactor (MABR)

  • This study evaluated the performance of a membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) for nitrogen removal from a high-strength ammonia nitrogen-containing wastewater. The experimental setup consisted of four compartments that are sequentially anaerobic and aerobic to achieve complete nitrogen removal. The last compartment of the reactor setup contained a membrane bioreactor (MBR) to reduce sludge production in the system and to obtain a better-quality effluent. Continuous experiment over a period of 47 days showed that MABR exhibited excellent NH4+-N removal efficiency (99.5%) compared to the control setup without MABR (56.5%). The final effluent NH4+-N concentration obtained in the MABR was 2.99±1.56 mg/L. In contrast to NH4+-N removal, comparable TOC removal values in the MABR and the control reactor (99.2% and 99.3%, respectively) showed that air supply through MABR is much more critical for denitrification than for organic removal. Further study to understand the effect of air supply rate and holding pressure on NH4+-N removal in MABR revealed that an increase in both these parameters positively impacted reactor performance. These parameters are related to oxygen supply to the biofilm formed over the membrane surface, which in turn influenced NH4+-N removal in MABR. Among the two different strategies to control biofilm over the membrane surface, results showed that scouring for a duration of 10 min on a weekly basis, along with mixing air supply, could be an effective method.

Mixed Flow and Oxygen Transfer Characteristics of Vertical Orifice Ejector (수직 오리피스 이젝터의 혼합유동 및 산소전달 특성)

  • The objective of this study is to experimentally investigate the mixed flow behaviors and oxygen transfer characteristics of a vertical orifice ejector. The experimental apparatus consisted of an electric motor-pump, an orifice ejector, a circulation water tank, an air compressor, a high speed camera unit and control or measurement accessories. The mass ratio was calculated using the measured primary flow rate and suction air flow rate with experimental parameters. The visualization images of vertically injected mixed jet issuing from the orifice ejector were qualitatively analyzed. The volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient was calculated using the measured dissolved oxygen concentration. At a constant primary flow rate, the mass ratio and oxygen transfer coefficient increase with the air pressure of compressor. At a constant air pressure of the compressor, the mass ratio decreases and the oxygen transfer coefficient increases as the primary flow rate increases. The residence time and dispersion of fine air bubbles and the penetration of mixed flow were found to be important parameters for the oxygen transfer rate owing to the contact area and time of two phases.

A NUMERICAL STUDY ON THE COATING THICKNESS IN CONTINUOUS HOT-DIP GALVANIZING (연속 아연 도금 두께에 관한 수치 해석적 연구)

  • To control the coating thickness of zinc in the process of continuous hot-dip galvanizing, it is known from early days that the gas wiping through an air knife system is the most effective because of the obtainable of uniformity of coating thickness, possibility of thin coating, working ability in high speed and simplicity of control. But, the gas wiping using in the galvanizing process brings about a problem of splashing from the strip edge for a certain high speed of coating. Also, it is known that the problem of splashing directly depends upon the galvanizing speed and nozzle stagnation pressure. In theses connections, in the present study, we proposed two kinds of air knife systems having the same expansion rate of nozzle, and the jet structures and coating thicknesses from a conventional and new proposed nozzles are compared. In numerical analysis, the governing equations consisted of two-dimensional time dependent Navier-Stokes equations, standard k-e turbulence model to solve turbulence stress and so on are employed. As a result, it is found that it had better to use the constant rate nozzle from the point view of the energy saving to obtain the same coating thickness. Also, to enhance the cutting ability at the strip, it is advisable to use an air knife with the constant expansion rate nozzle.

Development of Self-propelled Explosive Subsoiler (2) - Construction of Prototype and Performance Evaluation - (자주식 심토환경 개선기 개발(2) - 본체 제작 및 성능 평가 -)

  • This study was carried out to develop a self-propelled type explosive subsoiler for improving the root zone soil conditions in orchard and other forest fields. Prototype was designed to be able to inject air and other soil improving material such as lime into soil at the same time, and thus improve the air permeability and drainage of orchard soils to promote the root growth of tree for high quality fruit production. Soil penetration device of explosive subsoiler is composed of air hammer, penetration rob and air injection nozzle. To support the soil penetration device of explosive subsoiler to penetrate vertically, modified Scott-Russel mechanism was used. Timing control device for simultaneous injection of soil improving material with air was attached to the out side wall of air cylinder and as the cylinder move, the soil improving material was injected into soil at the same time. Turning radius of prototype was 2.2-2.3 m with good mobility in sloped land. It took approximately 1 minute for lime injection system to reach the optimum pressure of 9.9 kg/$cm^2$, average 10-20 seconds were required to rupture soil with the depth of 50 cm and 2-3 seconds were required for explosion, so all in all about 1 minute and 20 seconds were required for one cycle of explosion. Maximum soil rupture depth and diameter were 50 cm and 3-4 m respectively depending on the soil type and soil moisture content. For final design of explosive subsoiler inclination angle of lime hopper was increased from 60 degree to 70 degree and the shape of hopper was changed from rectangular cone to circular cone to solve the clogging problem of lime at out let. Agitating system operated by compressed air was attached to the metering device of the prototype, thus more than 90 cc of lime was discharged per cycle from metering device without clogging problems.

  • Recent research has focused on engine combustion technology as well as application of after-treatment in order to comply with emission regulation. However, it is much more efficient way to control emissions from engine itself and furthermore research on engine control will provide the direction of after-treatment technology in future. Furthermore, emission standard regulation for passenger diesel vehicles has been stringent compared to others and nano-particles will be included in EURO6 regulation in Europe and similar emission standard will be introduced in Korea. A 3.0 liter high speed diesel engine equipped with by CRDI system of 160MPa injection pressure, and an intake/exhaust system of V type 6 cylinder turbo-intercooler was applied. The injection duration and injection quantity, pilot injection types which are related to CRDI and air/fuel ratio control applied by EVGT were changed simultaneously. Standard experiment procedure constituted dilution apparatus and CPC system to collect nano-particles and these test results were compared with regulated materials of CO, HC, NOx and investigated their relations and characteristics of nano-particles.

  • Nowadays medical treatment service increase due to ageing population and improving the quality of life. Accordingly it is predicted that drug discovery market will expansion continuously. Therefore it is necessary that profit creation by drug discovery on the global market is important. HCS(High Contents Screening) has been emerging as a potential method to solve problems of the present drug discovery. This research is about liquid dispenser for HCS. The purpose of this research is to manufacture high performance liquid dispenser for HCS. The dispenser is designed to control 5 liquids separately. The liquid contact parts are designed disposably, biocompatibly and chemically inertly. Air curtain is equipped at the side of tip to dispense very small liquid volume and to prevent hanging drop on tip. Valving is performed by just controlling the pressure of the pressure driven pump without valve.
