Background: Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng Meyer) powder is in rising demand because powder forms of foods are convenient to handle and are highly preservable. However, ginseng powder (GP) manufactured using the conventional process of air drying and dry milling suffers nutrient destruction and a lack of microbiological safety. The objective of this study was to prepare GP using a novel process comprised of UV-TiO2 photocatalysis (UVTP) as a prewashing step, wet grinding, high hydrostatic pressure (HHP), and freeze-drying treatments. Methods: The effects of UVTP and HHP treatments on the microbial population, ginsenoside concentration, and physiological characteristics of GP were evaluated. Results: When UVTP for 10 min and HHP at 600 MPa for 5 min were combined, initial 4.95 log CFU/g-fw counts of total aerobes in fresh ginseng were reduced to lower than the detection limit. The levels of 7 major ginsenosides in UVTP-HHP-treated GP were significantly higher than in untreated control samples. Stronger inhibitory effects against inflammatory mediator production and antioxidant activity were observed in UVTP-HHP-treated GP than in untreated samples. There were also no significant differences in CIELAB color values of UVTP-HHP-treated GP compared with untreated control samples. Conclusion: Combined processing of UVTP and HHP increased ginsenoside levels and enhanced the microbiological safety and physiological activity of GP.
The rate of tungsten nuclei formation from $WF_6-SiH_4$ on silicon dioxide surface was measured. The nucleation rate became faster at high deposition temperature, low carrier gas flow rate and high deposition pressure. Also the rate became faster at the downstream of the oxide surface compared to the oxide surface near the inlet. Shape and cross-sectional view of the tungsten nuclei were observed with SEM and their chemical compositions were also determined.
The previous etching, rinsing and drying processes of wafers for MEMS (microelectromechanical system) using SC-$CO_2$ (supercritical-$CO_2$) consists of two steps. Firstly, MEMS-wafers are etched by organic solvent in a separate etching equipment from the high pressure dryer and then moved to the high pressure dryer to rinse and dry them using SC-$CO_2$. We found that the previous two step process could be applied to etch and dry wafers for MEMS but could not confirm the reproducibility through several experiments. We thought the cause of that was the stiction of structures occurring due to vaporization of the etching solvent during moving MEMS wafer to high pressure dryer after etching it outside. In order to improve the structure stiction problem, we designed a continuous process for etching, rinsing and drying MEMS-wafers using SC-$CO_2$ without moving them. And we also wanted to know relations of states of carbon dioxide (gas, liquid, supercritical fluid) to the structure stiction problem. In the case of using gas carbon dioxide (3 MPa, $25^{\circ}C$) as an etching solvent, we could obtain well-treated MEMS-wafers without stiction and confirm the reproducibility of experimental results. The quantity of rinsing solvent used could be also reduced compared with the previous technology. In the case of using liquid carbon dioxide (3 MPa, $5^{\circ}C$, we could not obtain well-treated MEMS-wafers without stiction due to the phase separation of between liquid carbon dioxide and etching co-solvent(acetone). In the case of using SC-$CO_2$ (7.5 Mpa, $40^{\circ}C$), we had as good results as those of the case using gas-$CO_2$. Besides the processing time was shortened compared with that of the case of using gas-$CO_2$.
MCPs means Micro Cellular Plastics. The micro-cells are generated in the products by the difference of dissolution through the pressure drop after super critical fluid of CO2 or N2 dissolves into polymer. We have developed injection molding process adopting MCPs and applied it to a broad range of injection molded thermoplastic materials and applications. It can prevent the leakage of impact strength and increase the thermal conductivity, moreover regulate the thermal conductivity. Then we can develop the high strength foaming plastics. Also, it can be gained a competitive advantage by utilizing its processing benefits, e.g. the lightweight products and significant reductions in material consumption.
This study was designed to determine the optimum conditions of heating temperature, heating time and dilution rates for producing heated garlic juice by using central composite design of response surface methodology. Garlic 3Department of Biosystems Engineering, Chungbuk National University, Cheongju 361-763, Korea was heated using a high temperature and pressure treatment apparatus. Total soluble solid contents ranged from 4.4 at $130^{\circ}C$ 3 hr and 6 fold dilution to 5.89 at $115^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr and 8 fold dilution. The highest total acidity was 0.55% at $120^{\circ}C$ for 3 hr and 2 fold dilution. The pH ranged from 4.01 at $130^{\circ}C$, 3 hr and 6 fold dilution to 5.85 at $120^{\circ}C$, 1 hr and 6 fold dilution. From the results of statistical analysis on the sensory evaluation the predicted optimum processing conditions for best color, taste, flavor and overall acceptance were $119.41^{\circ}C$, 3.11 hr, 5.85 fold dilution, $118.23^{\circ}C$, 3.57 hr, 3.15 fold dilution, $120.54^{\circ}C$, 3.47 hr, 5.01 fold dilution and $119.54^{\circ}C$, 3.18 hr, 5.66 fold dilution, respectively. The application of response surface methodology for preparing heated garlic juice processing showed a good correlation with high significance.
Codonopsis lanceolata, called deodeok in Korean, has been verified for various effects, including anti-aging and anti-inflammatory effects and insomnia improvement, and is one of the healthy foods that Koreans enjoy eating. In this study, the saponin content, lansemaside A content, and total saponin content of deodeok were analyzed using high-pressure sterilization and solid fermentation by mixed lactic acid bacteria. The antioxidant effect was compared to determine improved processing methods of deodeok. The lansemaside A content of deodeok samples depending on the preprocessing methods was analyzed: 2,594.10 mg/kg for dried deodeok, 2,100.93 mg/kg for steamed deodeok, and 1,151.31mg/kg for fermented deodeok. The total saponin content was found to be 7,209 mg/kg for dried deodeok and 8,605 mg/kg for steamed deodeok, showing a high saponin content. The total polyphenol content was highest for dried deodeok, steamed deodeok, and fermented deodeok. As for the antioxidant effect, it was analyzed that the effect of dried deodeok was the highest, followed by steamed deodeok and fermented deodeok; Dried deodeok had the highest value in total polyphenol content, not in total saponin content, which is considered to have a positive influence on its antioxidant effect. The content of lansemaside A was the highest for dried deodeok. When fermented deodeok is consumed, more beneficial effects on health can be expected by ingesting it with lactic acid bacteria cultured using saponins and polyphenols. Therefore, this study suggests the possibility of manufacturing products suitable for the needs of consumers, such as the flavor of deodeok, according to the processing methods.
Background: Panax ginseng Meyer is cultivated because of its medicinal effects on the immune system, blood pressure, and cancer. Major ginsenosides in fresh ginseng are converted to minor ginsenosides by structural changes such as hydrolysis and dehydration. The transformed ginsenosides are generally more bioavailable and bioactive than the primary ginsenosides. Therefore, in this study, hydrothermal processing was applied to ginseng preparation to increase the yields of the transformed ginsenosides, such as 20(S)-Rg3, Rk1, and Rg5, and enhance antioxidant activities in an effective way. Methods: Ginseng extract was hydrothermally processed using batch reactors at $100-160^{\circ}C$ with differing reaction times. Quantitative analysis of the ginsenoside yields was performed using HPLC, and the antioxidant activity was qualitatively analyzed by evaluating 2,2'-azino-bis radical cation scavenging, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging, and phenolic antioxidants. Red ginseng and sun ginseng were prepared by conventional steaming as the control group. Results: Unlike steaming, the hydrothermal process was performed under homogeneous conditions. Chemical reaction, heat transfer, and mass transfer are generally more efficient in homogeneous reactions. Therefore, maximum yields for the hydrothermal process were 2.5-25 times higher than those for steaming, and the antioxidant activities showed 1.6-4-fold increases for the hydrothermal process. Moreover, the reaction time was decreased from 3 h to 15-35 min using hydrothermal processing. Conclusion: Therefore, hydrothermal processing offers significant improvements over the conventional steaming process. In particular, at temperatures over $140^{\circ}C$, high yields of the transformed ginsenosides and increased antioxidant activities were obtained in tens of minutes.
Expensive PCBN or ceramic cutting tools are used for the processing of difficult-to-cut materials such as Ti and Ni alloy materials. These tools have a problem of breaking easily due to their high hardness but low fracture toughness. To solve this problem, cutting tools that form various coating layers are used in low-cost WC-Co hard material tools, and researches on various tool materials are being conducted. In this study, WC-5, 10, and 15 wt%Ni hard materials for difficult-to-cut cutting materials are densified using horizontal ball milled WC-Ni powders and pulsed current activated sintering method (PCAS method). Each PCASed WC-Ni hard materials are almost completely dense, with a relative density of up to 99.7 ~ 99.9 %, after the simultaneous application of pressure of 60 MPa and electric current for 2 min; process involves almost no change in the grain size. The average grain sizes of WC and Ni for WC-5, 10, and 15 wt%Ni hard materials are about 1.09 ~ 1.29 and 0.31 ~ 0.51 µm, respectively. Vickers hardness and fracture toughness of WC-5, 10, and 15 wt%Ni hard materials are about 1,923 ~ 1,788 kg/mm2 and 13.2 ~ 14.3 MPa.m1/2, respectively. Microstructure and phase analyses of PCASed WC-Ni hard materials are performed.
AC spark discharge voltage of SF6/C02and SF6/N2 containing various mixed rate in volume percent (1, 5 and 10%) of SF6 in non-uniform fields are investigated. The needle to plane electrode gap spacing was 5 and 10 mm, and the gas pressure was varied within the range of 0.1${\sim}$0.7 MPa. We have observed a N-characteristic typical for the electronegative gases even in gas mixtures of 1% SF6 with CO2 and N2 as buffer gases. Especially, the materials of the needle electrode affect the insulation properties of the gas mixtures drastically. On the contrary to the case of needle electrodes made by mild steel or high carbon steel, the N-characteristics are hardly perceived in the case of stainless steel needle in this experiment.

This study was performed to investigate the enhancement of UV-protection activities and skin-whitening effects from Angelica gigas Nakai extracts on ultra high pressure extraction process. Extraction at $60^{\circ}C$ treated by ultra high pressure for 15 minute and associated with ultrasofication (HPE15) was showed more than double yield, compare conventional extraction, as 12.24% (w/w) from A. gigas. Extracts of HPE15 reduced expression of MMP-1 on UV-irradiated CCD-986sk cells as 122.2% and revealed high inhibitory potency on tyrosinase as 69.4% by adding samples. Extracts of HPE15 from A. gigas showed strong inhibition effect on melanin production test by Clone M-3 cells as 82.4% by adding extracts. From the preliminary observations, we considered that the extracts from A. gigas could be potent natural materials for skin-whitening agent, and could be used as a potential anti-aging agent for the photo-damaged skin.
