  • LCD-BLU (Liquid Crystal Display - Back Light Unit) is one of kernel parts of LCD unit and it consists of several optical sheets(such as prism, diffuser and protector sheets), LCP (Light Guide Plate), light source (CCFL or LED) and mold frame. The LGP of LCD-BLU is usually manufactured by forming numerous dots with $50-200{\mu}m$ in diameter on it by erosion method. But the surface of the erosion dots of LGP is very rough due to the characteristics of the erosion process during the mold fabrication, so that its light loss is high along with the dispersion of light into the surface. Accordingly, there is a limit in raising the luminance of LCD-BLU. Especially, the negative and positive micro-lens pattern fabricated by modified LiGA with thermal reflow process was applied to the optical design of LGP.

  • As a direct-view flat panel displays, there are many devices, such as plasma display panels(PDPs), vacuum fluorescent displays (VFDs), and light emitting diode(LED). Among these, a PDP is the first type of panel display to be made commercially available. A 'Plasma display' is the general term for a flat display utilizing the light emission that is produced by gas discharge. However, the brightness and Luminous efficiency are still not adequate for consumer television. So, the new sustain electrode type of ac PDP was proposed. By arranging the transparent electrode of quadrangle by zigzag, the area of electrode are reduced, and the length of electrode gap is increased. It generates a high luminous efficiency(corresponding to a 40% improvement of standard type), the same discharge voltage characteristics, and the low power consumption at same luminance.

Synthesis of K2TiF6:Mn4+ Red Phosphors by a Simple Method and Their Photoluminescence Properties (Mn4+ 이온 활성 K2TiF6 불화물 적색형광체의 합성과 발광특성)

  • To prepare $Mn^{4+}$-activated $K_2TiF_6$ phosphor, a precipitation method without using hydrofluoric acid (HF) was designed. In the synthetic reaction, to prevent the decomposition of $K_2MnF_6$, which is used as a source of $Mn^{4+}$ activator, $NH_5F_2$ solution was adopted in place of the HF solution. Single phase $K_2TiF_6$:$Mn^{4+}$ phosphors were successfully synthesized through the designed reaction at room temperature. To acquire high luminance of the phosphor, the reaction conditions such as the type and concentration of the reactants were optimized. Also, the optimum content of $Mn^{4+}$ activator was evaluator based on the emission intensity. Photoluminescence properties such as excitation and emission spectrum, decay curve, and temperature dependence of PL intensity were investigated. In order to examine the applicability of this material to a white LED, the electroluminescence property of a pc-WLED fabricated by combining the $K_2TiF_6$:$Mn^{4+}$ phosphor with a 450 nm blue-LED chip was measured.

Optical Properties as Coating Process of Complex Phosphor for White LED (백색 LED용 복합형광체의 코팅공정에 따른 광 특성)

  • In this study, we fabricated high quality color conversion component with green/red phosphor and low melting glass frit. The color conversion component was prepared by placing the green and red phosphor layer on slide glass via screen printing process. The properties of color conversion component could be controlled by changing coating sequence, layer thickness and heat treatment temperature. We discovered that optical properties of color conversion component were generally determined by the lowest layer. On the other hand, the heat treatment temperature also affected to correlated color temperature (CCT) and color rending index (CRI). The color conversion component with a green (lower) - red (upper) layer which was sintered at $550^{\circ}C$ showed the best optical properties: CCT, CRI and luminance efficacy were 3340 K, 78, and 56.5 lm/w, respectively.

  • The exposure system is a device that transfers a circuit pattern to a desired location. To display patterns on a substrate without deforming the optical characteristics, the characteristics of the optical exposure system are very important. Therefore, to form a microcircuit pattern, a small divergence angle should impinge on the irradiation area. Also, since the light from the source must react uniformly with the photosensitizer, it must have high luminance efficiency and uniformity of illumination. In this paper a parabolic reflector and an aspherical lens were designed to solve the problem of narrow-angle implementation, and it was confirmed by simulation analysis after their arrangement that the beam angle, uniformity, and maximum illuminance satisfied the target performance.

  • Today, the handicapped or old people require continuous care, but there are a lot of practical difficulties. In this paper, the system measuring health conditions of the handicapped or old people (pulse and temperature) is developed. If urgent health conditions occur, measurement values are delivered to doctors or close family members using SMS (Short Message Service) of cellular phone. In the developed system, Pulse rate is measured by sensing bloodstream using high luminance LED and CdS illumination sensors. Body temperature is also measured by contactless temperature sensor. Also, the measured values are transmitted to a server computer using Zigbee communications. Also, the measured values the average of measurements and the time are saved. The wireless healthcare system is designed to help the emergency for the handicapped and old people by using SMS.

An Efficiency Improvement of the OLEDs due to the Thickness Variation on Hole-Injection Materials (정공주입물질 두께 변화에 따른 유기발광다이오드의 효율 개선)

  • A new information society of late has arrived by the rapid development of various information & communications technologies. Accordingly, mobile devices which are light and thin, easy and convenient to carry on the market. Also, the requirements for the larger television sets such as fast response speed, low-cost electric power, wider visual angle display are sufficiently satisfied. The currently most widely studied display material, the Organic Light-emitting Diodes(OLEDs) overwhelms the Liquid Crystal Display(LCD), the main occupier of the market. This new material features a response speed of more than a thousand times faster, no need of backlight, a low driving voltage, and no limit of view angle. And the OLEDs has high luminance efficiency and excellent durability and environment resistance, quite different from the inorganic LED light source. The OLEDs with simple device structure and easy produce can be manufactured in various shapes such as a point light source, a linear light source, a surface light source. This will surely dominate the market for the next generation lighting and display device. The new display utilizes not the glass substrate but the plastic one, resulting in the thin and flexible substrate that can be curved and flattened out as needed. In this paper, OLEDs device was produced by changing thickness of Teflon-AF of hole injection material layer. And as for the electrical properties, the four layer device of ITO/TPD/$Alq_3$/BCP/LiF/Al and the five layer device of ITO/Teflon AF/TPD/$Alq_3$/BCP/Lif/Al were studied experimentally.

Analysis of Preference Survey for the Media Facade Cases according to the Sensibility Keywords (감성 어휘에 따른 미디어 파사드 사례의 선호도 조사 분석)

  • The methods used in this study included investigation of media facades used for landmarks in downtown areas in previous studies, visits to these areas, and recording of media facades. The changes in the colors or the size of buildings were analyzed among the recorded cases and 12 of these cases were selected for further study. The sensibility preference of the media facades was evaluated by sorting the 12 kinds of media facades, and providing them as materials to a group of 60 participants (40 undergraduate and 20 graduate students majoring in architecture and design) consisting of an equal proportion of males and females. This study addressed the following four_stage questions: 1) Five questions of recognition evaluation about media facades and the cognitive evaluation items of emotional vocabulary and color preference in each research case; 2) sensibility preference items regarding the media facade color design; and 3) design evaluation items of the media facades; 4) Video clips and still images were recorded from a middle distance at 7p.m to 11p.m. in central New York, Singapore, Seoul, and Beijing. The participants looked at the changes in colors through the video clips in each case and evaluated their preferences through 23 pairs of emotional vocabulary items using system dynamics. Construction of an emotional vocabulary followed, based on previous studies about media facades and color design. To evaluate the sensibility preference and the perceived representative colors of the media facade, this study suggests new emotional responses that depended on the color emotional vocabulary of light in the LED lighting technical evaluation methodology. A media facade with a moving change of colors, unlike a fixed landscape color design, suggests a new communication method based on architectural factors. New architectural color coordination can be presented for urban landscapes at night. Designs that factor in the pedestrians' emotional vocabulary or preference should take precedence over the use of high luminance and various colors.

Inverted CdSe/ZnS Quantum Dots Light-Emitting Diode Using Low-Work Function Organic Material Polythylenimine Ethoylated

  • Over the past several years, colloidal core/shell type quantum dots lighting-emitting diodes (QDLEDs) have been extensively studied and developed for the future of optoelectronic applications. In the work, we fabricate an inverted CdSe/ZnS quantum dot (QD) based light-emitting diodes (QDLED). In order to reduce work function of indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode for inverted structure, a very thin (<10 nm) polyethylenimine ethoxylated (PEIE) is used as surface modifier[1] instead of conventional metal oxide electron injection layer. The PEIE layer substantially reduces the work function of ITO electrodes which is estimated to be 3.08 eV by ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS). From transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study, CdSe/ZnS QDs are uniformly distributed and formed by a monolayer on PEIE layer. In this inverted QDLEDs, blend of poly (9,9-di-n-octyl-fluorene-alt-benzothiadiazolo) and poly(N,N'-bis(4-butylphenyl)-N,N'-bis(phenyl)benzidine] are used as hole transporting layer (HTL) to improve hole transporting property. At the operating voltage of 8 V, the QDLED device emitted spectrally orange color lights with high luminance up to 2450 cd/m2, and showed current efficacy of 0.6 cd/A, respectively.

Development of OSL Dosimetry Reader (선량 판독용 OSL 측정장치의 개발)

  • Design and performance test results of a newly developed optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) measurement system are presented in this paper. Generally, different types of optical filters are used in OSL reader system to minimize the interference of the stimulation light in the OSL signal. For optically stimulation of $Al_2O_3:C$, we have arrived at an optimal combination of the filters, i.e., GG420 filter for filtering the stimulating light source, and a combined UG11 and BG39 filter at the detecting window (PMT). By using a high luminance blue LED (Luxeon V), sufficient luminous intensity could be obtained for optically stimulation. By using various control boards, the OSL reader device was successfully interfaced with a personal computer. A software was developed to deliver required commands to operate the OSL reader by using the LabView program (National Instruments, Inc.). In order to evaluate the reliability and the reproducibility of newly designed-OSL reader. Performance testing of the OSL reader was carried out for OSL efficiency, OSL decay curve and signal to noise ratio of the standard $Al_2O_3:C$ OSL material. It was found to be comparable with that of commercial Riso reader system.
