  • This study aimed to observe the effect of a novel concept (referred to as the flap extension) implemented on the leading edge of the flap of a three element high lift device. The high lift device, consisting of a flap, main element and slat is designed around an Airbus research profile for sufficient take off and landing performance of a large commercial aircraft. The concept is realised on the profile and numerically optimised to achieve an optimum geometry. Two different optimisation approaches based on Genetic Algorithm optimisations are used: a zero order approach which makes simplifying assumptions to achieve an optimised solution: as well as a direct approach which employs an optimisation in ANSYS DesignXplorer using RANS calculations. Both methods converge to different optimised solutions due to simplifying assumptions. The solution to the zero order optimisation showed a decreased stall angle and decreased maximum lift coefficient against angle of attack due to early stall onset at the flap. The DesignXplorer optimised solution matched that of the baseline solution very closely. The concept was seen to increase lift locally at the flap for both optimisation methods.

  • Numerical optimization of two dimensional high lift configuration was performed with flow solver and optimization method based on RSM(Response Surface Model). Navier-Stokes solver with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model was selected for the simulation of highly complex and separated flows on the flap. For the simultaneous optimization of both flap shape and setting (gap/overlap), 10 design variables (eight variables for flap shape variation and two variables for flap setting) were chosen. In order to generate the response surface model, 128 experimental points were selected for 10 design variables. The objective function considering maximum lift coefficient, lift to drag ratio and lift coefficient at specific angle of attack was selected to reduce flow separation on the flap surface. The present method was applied to two dimensional fowler flap in landing configuration. After applying the present method, it was shown that the optimized high lift configuration had less flow separation on the flap surface and lift to drag ratio was suppressed over entire angle of attack range.

  • A rotating propeller of turboprop aircraft gives much effect on the aerodynamic characteristics of wing such as lift, moment and stall. Specially propeller effect on the wing surface is much more dominant when aircrafts are in landing or take-off conditions. In the present paper, three dimensional Navier-Stokes simulations for the interaction of propeller and wing were carried out for medium sized turboprop aircraft. For rotating propeller, unsteady sliding mesh method was used to simulate a relative motion between moving and static bodies. For the power effect analysis in landing and take off configurations, double slotted flap was also considered and the aerodynamic characteristics were investigated. It was shown that the propeller slipstream enhanced the lift slope including maximum lift by eliminating local flow separation region and this enhancement was more dominant with high lift device.

  • In order to verify the lift enhancement of the 2D hydrofoil with trailing edge rotor and check the ability of its practical use, experimental studies were conducted in the caviation tunnel using the test model with NACA0020 section. The three-component forces acting on the model could be measured by exclusively designed sting type multi-component load cell. The trailing edge of the model has been replaced with rotor which could be controlled by DC servo motor installed at the exterior of the tunnel. A typical effect of the trailing edge rotor has been introduced among the systematic experiments on various angular deviation of the model and the rotational velocity of the trailing edge rotor. It is appeared that the circulation control effect could be easily adjusted by selecting the rotational velocity of the trailing edge rotor and the lift force was augmented more than two times. Thus the proposed lifting device could be utilized as a novel high lifting device which has adjustability of lift force.

  • The Plan and equipment of vertical lifting are very important in high-rise building construction site, and unmanned lifts usage is increasing for financial and efficient reason. However if lift stop position error occur, It can be accumulated. And the lift can not be available during an engineer fix the problem. So loss of time and cost will occur when lifts have problems. This paper reports an improved lift stop position sensing device for preventing loss of time and cost from lift stop position error. The result of tests showed that the system has a correction function of lift stop position error, and the accuracy of device which was developed in this paper was about 9.75mm better than existing equipment.

  • CFD simulation was peformed for 2D and 3D flying and rotating frisbees. Multiple reference method(MRF) was utilized to consider the rotation of 3D model. Geometry change of 2D model shows dramatic increase of lift, but 3D simulation results for geometry change show decrease of lift and drag. Ground effect increases the lift of the frisbee being close to ground.

  • The development of a tilting train with construction of electric line on the conventional railway is required for speed-up on the conventional railway with many curving sections. For development of tilting train, the study and development of the tilting system and tilting bogie having the different mechanism with a general high speed train will play a main role for improving the technology in the field of Korean railway. The study and development of the pantograph tilting mechanism in order to keep a good contact behavior between a pantograph and a contact wire by tilting a pantograph on the opposite direction of the vehicle tilting direction. In this study, we analyzed the aerodynamic characteristic of a developing pantograph on the tilting train and obtained the contact force with catenary by aerodynamic lift force by the aerodynamic analysis. We also performed the numerical analysis for design the device controlling lift force on a pantograph. From the aerodynamic simulation and parameter study for a device to control the lift force, we will suggest the various shape and the optimal shape of it corresponding to a developing tilting pantograph. The Fluent software is used for the calculation of flow profile in this study.

  • For a long times it has been believed that the Magnus effect of the rotating cylinder could be utilized for the lifting devices applicable to marine practices. It has been reported that the rotating cylinder installed on upper deck of commercial vessel could play a energy saving role however the idea might be applicable in a very rare case in ship building practices. In this study special high lift rudder system equipped with the trailing edge rotor has been suggested in correspondence with the increasing requirement of greater rudder force. Through the numerical simulation it is cleared that the trailing edge rotor could play a role in enhancement of circulation and refinement of boundary layer of the rudder system. At the same time it is found out that the lift force of the rudder system without rotation of trailing edge rotor could be doubled when the circumferential velocity of the trailing edge rotor is equal to twice of the inflow velocity.

  • A Coanda foil is a high-lift generating device exploiting the phenomena that flow separation is delayed if a high-speed jet is applied tangential to the surface as well known to the aerodynamic fields. In the present study, a Coanda foil with a flap is investigated to seek the possibility of marine application. Model experiments are carried out both in a towing tank and cavitation tunnel and surface pressure distributions, forces and moments acting on the foil are measured at the various angle of attacks and flap angles. The results are also compared to the numerical ones to show good agreements. The results of the present study demonstrate the practical applicability of the Coanda foil in the design of ship control surfaces.
