  • Correlation among different factors must be considered for selection of influencing factors in safety monitoring of high dam including positive correlation of variables. Therefore, a new factor selection method was constructed based on Copula entropy and mutual information theory, which was deduced and optimized. Considering the small sample size in high dam monitoring and distribution of daily monitoring samples, a computing method that avoids causality of structure as much as possible is needed. The two-dimensional normal information diffusion and fuzzy reasoning of pattern recognition field are based on the weight theory, which avoids complicated causes of the studying structure. Hence, it is used to dam safety monitoring field and simplified, which increases sample information appropriately. Next, a complete system integrating high dam monitoring and uncertainty prediction method was established by combining Copula entropy theory and information diffusion theory. Finally, the proposed method was applied in seepage monitoring of Nuozhadu clay core-wall rockfill dam. Its selection of influencing factors and processing of sample data were compared with different models. Results demonstrated that the proposed method increases the prediction accuracy to some extent.

  • With the rapid development of the Chinese water project, the safety monitoring of dams is urgently needed. Many drawbacks exist in dams, such as high monitoring costs, a limited equipment service life, long-term monitoring difficulties. MEMS sensors have the advantages of low cost, high precision, easy installation, and simplicity, so they have broad application prospects in engineering measurements. This paper designs intelligent monitoring based on the collaborative measurement of dual MEMS sensors. The system first determines the endpoint coordinates of the sensor array by the coordinate transformation relationship in the monitoring system and then obtains the dam settlement according to the endpoint coordinates. Next, this paper proposes a dual-MEMS sensor collaborative measurement algorithm that builds a mathematical model of the dual-sensor measurement. The monitoring system realizes mutual compensation between sensor measurement data by calculating the motion constraint matrix between the two sensors. Compared with the single-sensor measurement, the dual-sensor measurement algorithm is more accurate and can improve the reliability of long-term monitoring data. Finally, the experimental results show that the dam subsidence monitoring system proposed in this paper fully meets the engineering monitoring accuracy needs, and the dual-sensor collaborative measurement system is more stable than the single-sensor monitoring system.

  • In this paper, we introduce the hardware of the measuring system for on-line test and evaluation of high speed rail. It is composed of 6 DAMs(Data Aquisition modules), 2 monitoring modules and 1 main computer. Each of DAMs is connected many kinds of sensors, such as accelerometers, thermocouples, strain gauges, volt meters, current meter, odermeter, and measures the signals from sensors, saves it and displays it on the displayer. Two monitoring modules monitor the major signals transferred from DAMs. A main computer controls 4 DAMs(DAM1, DAM2, DAM31 and DAM32) and 2 monitoring modules and also monitors the major signals transferred from DAMs.

  • In this study, construction modulus, void ratio and settlement characteristics of 38 CFRD in domestic and foreign countries were investigated from monitoring data. The effect of field dry density and void ratio to dam body was analyzed. The standard void ratio of CFRD that can be easily used by dam designers and field engineers was proposed from the monitoring data. It was confirmed that we can get the degree of compaction needed for reasonable compaction of dam body by calculating the field dry density from inverse operation of the standard void ratio. It was thought that the void ratio of CFRD depends on shape coefficient and in case of a high shape coefficient, the void ratio was high with its void ratio 0.17 -0.38.

  • Defects of dam body which can be induced in seepage or leakage procedure can directly affect dam safety. Therefore, a proper inspection method should be carried out in the first place to find out their positions and sizes, After that, some reinforcement works such as grouting and the corresponding assessment could be taken in a proper way. The dam(center core type earth dam) issued in this study has been in need for intensive diagnosis and reinforcement work, because a lot of slumps similar to cracks, seepage and some boggy area have been observed on the downstream slope. High resolution seismic reflection method was performed on the crest profile twice before and after grouting work(Aug. 2001 and Nov. 2004) aimed at the dam inspection and the assessment of grouting efficiency as well. To enhance the data resolution, P-beam energy radiation technique which can reduce the surface waves and hence to reinforce the reflection events was used. Strong reflection events were recognized in the stack section before grouting work, It seems that the events would be caused by e.g. horizontal cracks with a considerable aperture, Meanwhile such strong reflection events were not observed in the section after grouting. That is, the grouting work was dear able to reinforce the defects of dam body. Hence, the section showed an well arranged picture of dam inner structure. In this sense, seismic reflection method will be a desirable technique for dam inspection and for monitoring dam inner structure as well.

  • The knowledge of the behavior of any roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam and its foundation is gained by studying the service action of the dam and its foundation using measurements of an external and internal nature. The information by which a continuing assurance of structural safety of the RCC dam can be gauged is of primary importance. Similarly, the fact that the information on structural and thermal behavior and the properties of concrete that may be used to give added criteria for use in the design of future RCC dams is of secondary importance. Wide spread attention is now being given to the installation of more expensive instrumentation for studying the behavior of concrete dams and reservoirs and forecasting of any adverse trends. In view of this, the paper traces installation and need of the comprehensive instrumentation scheme implemented to monitor the structural and thermal behavior of 102.4 m high RCC dam constructed near Mumbai in India. An attempt is made in the present paper to emphasize the need to undertake an instrumentation program and evaluate their performance during construction and post construction stage of RCC structures. Few typical results, regarding the thermal and structural behavior of the dam, obtained through instrumentation installed at the dam site are presented and compared with the design considerations. The fair agreement is seen in the response observed through instrumentation with that governing the design criteria.

  • Under the interaction between dam body, dam foundation and external environment, the dam structural behavior presents the time-varying nonlinear characteristics. According to the prototypical observations, the correct identification on above nonlinear characteristics is very important for dam safety control. It is difficult to implement the description, analysis and diagnosis for dam structural behavior by use of any linear method. Based on the rescaled range analysis approach, the algorithm is proposed to identify and extract the fractal feature on observed dam structural behavior. The displacement behavior of one actual dam is taken as an example. The fractal long-range correlation for observed displacement behavior is analyzed and revealed. The feasibility and validity of the proposed method is verified. It is indicated that the mechanism evidence can be provided for the prediction and diagnosis of dam structural behavior by using the fractal identification method. The proposed approach has a high potential for other similar applications.

  • We applied SP monitoring and resistivity surveys using the pole-pole electrode array to seawater leakage problems in the Youngsan estuary dam and the Eoeun embankment to estimate and detect the zone of seawater leakage. The embankment is generally affected by tidal variation and has low resistivity characteristics due to the high saturation of seawater. For this reason, SP monitoring and the pole-pole array resistivity surveys, which are relatively more effective to the conductive media, were carried out to delineate the leakage zones of sea water through the embankment. We checked out electrical conductivity (EC) and temperature variations along the inner part of Youngsan estuary dam to detect the zone of seawater leakage and found that the measured EC value agreed to that of seawater in the leakage zone and the temperature was lower than that of the vicinity of leakage zone. SP monitoring results were coincided with tidal variations at each embankment. At the leakage zones in the Youngsan estuary dam and the Eoeun embankment, SP anomalies are in the range of -60~-85 mV and -20~-50 mV, respectively, and true resistivity values obtained by 2-D inversion are 3~15 ohm-m and below 0.3 ohm-m, respectively. Both SP monitoring and the pole-pole array resistivity method are found to be quite effective for investigation of seawater leakage zones in the embankment.
