Benzophenone (BP) which is one of endocrine disrupting chemicals is suspected to contaminate waters (river, lake and industrial drainage) and soils (ground soil and sediment). Analytical method for determination of BP in soil and water was developed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Water sample (100 mL) was extracted with n-hexane, and soil (10 g) was extracted with methanol and n-hexane. Recovery for BP was >71.4% in water and 86.5-94.7% in soil with coefficient variation of less than 19.8%. Calibration curves showed a good linearity ($r^2$ >0.998). In water, soil and sediment collected at nation-wide sites, BP was detected at 5 sites among 43 water sites at the concentration range of 30-200 ng/L. No BP was found in the soil and sediment samples. It is suggested that this method will be useful to the determination of BP in the environmental matrices such as waters, soils and sediments in minute quantities.

Citri Reticulatae Viride Pericarpium extract(CRVP) have been used in oriental medicine for many centuries as a therapeutic agent for smoothing the liver and regulating the circulation of qi, and promoting digestion and removing stagnated food. The effects of CRVP on the inhibition of brain damage in cerebral ischemia is not known. Therefore, this Study was designed to investigate the cerebral protective effects of CRVP on the transient cerebral ischemia using modern techniques, and further to provide the possibility of scientification of oriental medicine. The size of cerebral infarct size was measured by morphometry, and brain edema was measured by morphometry and brain water content determination. The results were a$ follows ; 1. Water fraction of CRVP was reduced infect area of rats brain slices which were subjected to a transient cerebral ischemia in a dose-dependent manner. 2. Methylene chloride fraction and hexane fraction of CRVP was significantly reduced infarct area of rats brain slices which were subjected to a transient cerebral ischemia in a dose-dependent manner. 3. Methylene chloride fraction and hexane fraction of CRVP was significantly reduced infarct volume of rats brain which was subjected to a transient cerebral ischemia in a dose-dependent manner. 4. Methylene Chloride fraction and hexane fraction of CRVP was significantly decreased brain edema induced by a transient cerebral ischemia in a dose-dependent manner. 5. Methylene chloride fraction and hexane fraction of CRVP was significantly decreased brain water content of rats which were subjected to a transient cerebral ischemia. It is suggested that CRVP has an anti-ischemic effect through the inhibition of brain damage in a transient cerebral ischemia, and that in future further development of main effective constituent in CRVP can provide a novel therapeutic strategy for cerebral ischemia.

The use of chemotherapeutics induces cardiotoxicity and affects immune functions, therefore development of combinatorial agents against cardiotoxicity and immunosuppression needs to be explored. Previous studies of the hexane insoluble fraction (HIF) of an ethanolic extract of Ficus septica leaves showed anticancer effects singly and in combination with doxorubicin on T47D breast cancer cells. In this present study, it was evaluated for its immunomodulatory activities in doxorubicin-treated rats. Thirty male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into five groups consisting of six rats each as follows: Group 1, receiving oral saline 10 ml/kg BW (control group); Group 2, receiving HIF dose 750 mg/kg BW orally, once daily; Group 3, receiving HIF dose 1.500 mg/kg BW orally, once daily; Group 4, given oral saline 10 ml/kg BW (normal group); Group 5, receiving HIF dose 1.500 mg/kg BW orally, once daily. The rats of group 1-3 were intramuscularly administered with doxorubicin at a dose of 4.67 mg/kg BW at the days 1 and 4 to suppress immune functions. Concomitantly, the rats were treated with saline or HIF for seven consecutive days (1 to 7). Treatment of HIF succeeded in reducing side effects of doxorubicin based on increasing lymphocyte density and phagocytosis activity and capacity of macrophages, as well as increasing the CD8+ blood level and decreasing spleen IL-10 expression. Hexane insoluble fraction of of ethanolic extract of Ficus septica leaves has potential as a protective agent combined with doxorubicin.
Frontal analysis(FA) and Pulsed input method(PIM) have been frequently utilized to measure isotherm of single solute, as well as non-competitive isotherms of two solutes in chromatography(1). FA and PIM were used in this study as complementary methods to measure adsorption isotherms of loxoprofen racemate in HPLC. Prior to FA and PIM experiments, measurements of loxoprofen solubility were made at hexane/ethanol=50/50, 80/20, 95/5(v/v) with acetic acid(0.5%) for adjusting pH. The last composition(95/5) of hexane/ethanol allows us to separate loxoprofen racemate into two forms(retentate, extract). PIM and FA were used to determine the isotherms of re-and ex-loxoprofen.
This study was carried out to investigate the antioxidative and antitumor activities of Saussurea lappa for the purpose of developing a functional food. The methanol extract of Saussurea lappa was fractionated with five solvents (hexane, chloroform, EtOAc, BuOH, water) and examined for antioxidative activities and xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity in addition to growth inhibitory activity of human cancer cell (HT-29, SNU-1, HeLa). Total phenol compound contents were higher in EtOAC fraction than other fractions. Also, electron donating ability was over 90% at $500{\mu}g/ml$ (93.1 %) and $1000{\mu}g/ml$ (94.3%). The hexane fraction revealed stronger nitrite scavenging ability than the positive control (ascorbic acid) and its abilities were 22.4% and 42.8% at $500{\mu}g/ml$ and $1000{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity had similar tendency to electron donating ability. The EtOAc fraction showed high inhibition to xanthien oxidase activities at $500{\mu}g/ml$(81.9%) and $1000{\mu}g/ml$(90.4%). In the antitumor activity test, the hexane fraction exhibited potent growth inhibition activity against HT-29, SNU-1 and HeLa cells. Therefore, we believe that Saussurea lappa can be developed into a functional food with antioxidant activity. Additional studies are required for the hexane and chloroform fractions of Saussurea lappa to develop them into therapeutic supplements for stomach cancer, colon cancer, and cervical cancer.
The present study was carried out for research and development of natural antimicrobial from extract of Stachys sieboldii MIQ against food borne bacteria. The hexane extract of Stachys sieboldii MIQ at 250$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ per disc showed 15 ~ 20 mm inhibition zone against gram positive and gram negative barteria. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of hexane extract was 250${\mu}g$/$m\ell$against Bacillus cereus, 250~500${\mu}g$/$m\ell$against Listeria monocytogenes, 500${\mu}g$/$m\ell$ against Staphylococcus aureus, Psedomonas aeruginosa. Observation by transmission electron microscope, showed that disruption of the cell wall assumed to be due to the bactericidal activity. In addition, the membrane integrity of the sensitive cells was disrupted by exposure to Stachys sieboldii MIQ extract on the D-$\beta$-galatosidase activity as substrate of O-nitrophenol-$\beta$-D-galacto-pyranoside. The hexane extract of Stachys sieboldii MIQ was very stable on the pH and thermal stability.

Laetiporus sulphrueus var. miniatus is widely distributed worldwide, and has commonly been used as a medicinal mushroom. In the present study, we investigated the effects of water extract and solvent fractions from the Laetiporus miniatus as possible antioxidant, anti-thrombin and anti-invasive agents against phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)- or thrombin-induced matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 activities. Samples were fractionated into n-hexane, $CHCl_3$, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water fractions, and individually analysed. The water fraction had the highest extraction yield at 34.90% (w/w), while the n-butanol fraction demonstrated the highest anti-oxidative activity at 81.44%. In the thrombin inhibitory activity test, the water fraction exhibited the highest activity at 94.64%. Even at the concentration of $40{\mu}g/mL$, evaluation of anti-proliferating activity in YD-10B cells did not reveal any cytotoxic effects. Although MMP-9 expression in YD-10B cells increased after the addition of PMA and thrombin, MMP-2 did not. Additionally, MMP-2/-9 levels in PMA-treated YD-10B cells (i.e., both mRNA expression and protein activation) were highly inhibited in the hexane and chloroform fractions. Compared with MMP-2 levels, MMP-9 mRNA expression and proteolytic activity were inhibited to a greater extent by the hexane and chloroform fractions in thrombin-treated YD-10B cells. Taken together, these results support that thrombin induces tumor invasion through MMP-2/9 and suggest that the L. miniatus may act as an effective functional food, conferring anti-oxidative, anti-thrombotic and anti-cancer activities.
The comparison of $IC_{50}$ values of Salvia plebeia R. Br. extracts on L1210, $P388D_1$ cancer and Vero normal cell lines showed that the n-hexane soluble extract of S. plebeia R. Br. retains the most growth-inhibitory activity against tumor cell lines. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extract against microorganisms were also examined. Antimicrobial activity of amocla and ketoconazole as references was compared to those of other solvent extracts such as $H_2O$, n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol. The antimicrobial activity of extract had growth inhibition activity against gramnegative bacteria, gram-positive bacteria and fungi $(MIC\;>\;200\;{\mu}g/ml)$ except for n-hexane extract. Seven bacterial strains were tested for in vitro susceptibility to the extract of S. plebeia R. Br. However the n-hexane extract of S. plebeia R. Br. inhibited the growth of several bacterial strains (MIC values between 100 and $200\;{\mu}g/ml$ for gram positive bacteria, $25\;{\mu}g/ml$ for P. putida).
Apple pomace and soymilk residue which have 36.3% and 20.2% of neutral detergent fiber, respectively, were evaluated as potential dietary fiber supplement. Apple pomace showed strong functional properties as source of dietary fiber when Created with water, and n-hexane continually. The neutral detergent fiber content of treated apple pomace was 60.9% and holding capacities were 11.3g water/g and 2.01g fat/g. Canon exchange capacity was 65.0meq./100g. Soymilk residue showed good functional properties as source of dietary fiber when treated continually with water, n-hexane, acid and alkali. The neutral detergent fiber content of treated soymilk residue was 52.7% and holding capacities were 10.2g water/g and 1.52g fat/g. Canon exchange capacity was 63.7meq./100g. The color of treated dietary fiber sources were slightly shifted to darkness.
The optimum conditions for the analysis of the difenoconazole fungicide on soil and crops were investigated and the residues of that in apple and soil were identified by using the gas chromatography. The extract with acetonitrile was separated with saturated NaCl and n-hexane solution after filtered, and concentrated. Obtained fungicide residues were transfered to the florisil column and eluted with acetone and n-hexane mixed solution for the analysis by GLC(ECD). From the standard addition experiments with 0.20 and 1.0ppm, the average recoveries were 86~92% and the detection limit was 0.01 ppm. It seems to be safely used when difenoconazole is treated three times until 15 days before harvest of apple. In this case residual amounts of difenoconazole in apple was from 0.037ppm to 0.044ppm. The soil samples extracted with methanol and ammonium hydroxide mixed solution were partitioned with dichloromethane and saturated sodium chloride solution. The organic phase was concentrated and redissolved with toluene and analyzed with GLC(FID) after cleaned with Sep-Pak column. From the standard addition experiments with 0.10, 0.50 and 1.0ppm, the average recoveries were 101.2~103.7% and the detection limit was 0.025ppm.
