새만금 해역에서 와편모조류 휴면포자의 시공간적 분포 (Spatio-temporal Distribution of Dinoflagellate Resting Cysts at the Saemangeum Area)

  • The spatio-temporal distribution of dinoflagellate resting cysts was investigated by palynological processing to understand the harmful algal bloom (HAB) potential in the sediment of the Saemangeun area in 2003. In total, thirty-two dinoflagellate species were identified, and their concentrations were in the range of $6-1,618\;cysts{\cdot}g^{-1}$ (dry weight). The concentrations of resting cysts were higher in the spring (26 species, $64-1,101\;cysts{\cdot}g^{-1})$ and summer (30 species, $81-1,618\;cysts{\cdot}g^{-1})$ than in the autumn (32 species, $6-1,150\;cysts{\cdot}g^{-1})$ and winter (24 species, $25-728\;cysts{\cdot}g^{-1}).$ The composition rate of the heterotrophic dinoflagellate species to the total, which is closely related to the eutrophication process, to ranged from 6 to $29\%$ in the study area. The most dominant species was toxic Alexandrium tamarense/catenella $(25\%)$ followed by Gonyaulax scrippsea $(9\%)$ and toxic Protoceratium reticulatum $(5\%).$ Given the high abundance of the toxigenic dinoflagellate species, the Saemangeun area is considered to have the great potential for HABs in the future.

한국 남해 연안 광양만 표층 퇴적물의 와편모조류 시스트 분포 특성과 식물플랑크톤 군집과의 비교 (Relationship Between Dinoflagellate Cyst Distribution in Surface Sediments and Phytoplankton Assemblages from Gwangyang Bay, a Southern Coastal area of Korea)

  • 광양만의 와편모조류 시스트를 연구하기 위하여 2001년 8월 24일 광양만의 20개 정점에서 TFO 채니기를 이용하여 표층 퇴적물과 식물플랑크톤 조사를 위한 표층 해수를 채수하였다. 퇴적물을 분석한 결과, 와편모조류 시스트는 gonyaulacoid 그룹 11종, protoperidinioid 그룹 13종, diplopsalid그룹 2종, gymnodinioid 그룹 2종, 그리고 tuberculodinioid그룹 1종, calciodinellid 그룹 1종으로 총 IT속 30종이 동정되었다. 와편모조류 시스트는 115∼2,188cysts/g의 농도로 분포하고 있었으며 , 전반적으로 조사해역의 서쪽으로 갈수록 증가하였다. 시스트 농도가 가장 높게 나타난 지역은 북서쪽에 위치한 정점 11로서, 11속 18종(2,188 cysts/g)의 시스트가 발견되었으며, 반면에 가장 낮게 나타난 지역은 조사해역의 중앙부에 위치한 정점 3으로, 6속 9종(115 cysts/g)의 시스트가 발견되었다. 가장 많이 발견된 와편모조류 시스트는 SPiniferites bulloideus였으며, Alexandrium sp., Brigantedinium simplex, S. delicatus 등이 우점하였다. 퇴적물 시료에 기록된 8종의 와편모조류 시스트의 유영세포가 해수 시료에서도 발견되었다: Polykrikos swartzii/kofoidii complex, Scripssiella trochoidea, Protoperidinium claudicans(cyst name: Votadinium spinosum), P. pentagonum(: Trinovantedinium capitatum capitatum), P. conicum(: Selenopemphix quanta), P. leonis(: Quinquecuspis concretum), P. conicoides(: Brigantedinium simplex), Gonyaulax spp.(: Spiniferites spp.). 본 연구에서 퇴적물 시료의 타가영양 와편모조류 시스트 농도가 가장 높은 정점과 표층 해수 시료의 규조류 현존량이 가장 높은 정점이 일치하였다. 이는 부영양화로 인해 영양염류가 증가한 해역에서 규조류가 많이 증식하고, 뒤이어 이를 먹이로 하는 타가영양 와편모조류도 증식함에 따라, 많은 양의 타가영양 와편모조류 시스트가 퇴적물에 집적되는 현상이 장기간에 걸쳐 진행된 결과로 생각된다 앞으로 해역의 부영양화와 퇴적물의 타가영양 와편모조류 시스트와의 관계를 보다 명확하게 규명하기 위해서는,표층수의 식물플랑크톤과 퇴적물의 와편모조류 시스트에 대한 장기간 모니터링에 따른 연속적 인 연구가 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

황해 남동부 해역 저질 내 와편모조류 휴면포자의 분포 (Horizontal Distribution of Dinoflagellate Resting Cysts in Sediments from the Southeastern Yellow Sea)

  • To gain a greater understanding of the potential for future harmful algal bloom (HAB) outbreaks and to trace the dispersal paths of dinoflagellates, sediment samples were collected from 13 stations in the southeastern Yellow Sea. 23 different types of dinoflagellate resting cysts were identified from the samples. Protoceratium reticulatum (1-391 cells/g dry weight), Gonyaulax scrippsae (0-254 cells/g dry weight), G. spinifera (0-301 cells/g dry weight) and Alexandrium spp. (ellipsoidal type) (0-76 cells/g dry weight) were the dominant species at all surveyed stations. The overall distribution pattern demonstrated that the resting cyst densities were highest in the offshore area and decreased gradually toward the Korean coast. On the other hand, the composition rate of resting cysts of the heterotrophic dinoflagellate species to the total dinoflagellates was higher in the Korean coast region than in the offshore area. We supposed that this distribution pattern of dinoflagellate resting cysts appeared to be influenced by the hydrographic features and environmental conditions of the Yellow Sea.

  • Spatio-temporal distribution of dinoflagellate cysts was monthly investigated at 6 stations in Gamak Bay, the southern Korea from April 2000 to April 2001. A total of 37 species of dinoflagellate cysts belonging to 22 genera were identified. The temporal changes of species number fluctuated with an annual mean of 8 species, 1 species at Stn. 6 in July in the middle Gamak Bay and 17 species at Stn. 2 in June southern Gamak Bay, but 11 to 20 species occurred in the northwestern Gamak Bay all the year round. The major species were Brigantedinium cariacoense, Brigantedinium simpler, Brigantedinium spp., Protoperidinium americanum, Quinquecusphix concretum, Selenopemphix quanta, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Spiniferites bulloideus, Spiniferites spp., Stelladinium reidii, Votadinium carvum, and Polykrikos sp. of kofoidii. The dominant species of dinoflagellate cysts was not evident in the over-all study areas, but in the northwestern Gamak Bay Brigantedinium spp. and Protoperidinium americanum were dominant $(50.4-76.0\%)$ during the study periods. Abundance of dinoflagellate cysts on the surface sediment in the Gamak Bay ranged from 21 cysts/g dry at Stn. 6 in July to 4,322 cysts/g dry at Stn. 4 in August with an annual mean of 688 cysts/g dry. Especially, the highest value occurred in the northwestern Gamak Bay. Heterotrophic species was more abundant than autotrophic species on the surface sediment. In particular, the former occurred in $75-94\%$ in the northwestern Gamak Bay throughout the year. The northwestern area was very different from other area in species number, dominant species and abundance of dinoflagellate cysts. It is mainly due to water stagnation and eutrophication in the area. And the seasonal abundance of dinoflagellate cysts in Gamak Bay was inversly related to water temperature.

와편모조 시스트 분포에 의한 울산연안 해역의 생물해양환경 특성 (Marine Bio-environmental Characteristics with the Distributions of Dinoflagellate Cyst Assemblages in the Ulsan Coastal Waters (UCW))

  • 울산연안 해역 표층퇴적물 중의 와편모조 시스트 군집에 의한 생물해양학적 환경특성을 파악하기 위해 2016년 4월 15개의 정점을 대상으로 저층의 해양환경과 와편모조 시스트를 분석하였다. 시스트 표본은 Smith-Mcintyre 채니기를 이용하여 0~2 cm의 표층퇴적물을 채집하였다. 결과, 수심의 깊은 울산연안 해역의 저층에는 저층혼탁수증의 출현하는 것으로 추정되었고, 식물플랑크톤 군집은 규조에 의해 지배되는 특징을 보였다. 와편모조 시스트는 6그룹 9속 33종으로 Protoperidinioid 그룹이 17종으로 51.58%, Gonyaulacoid 그룹이 10종에 30.4%, Gymnodinioid 그룹이 3종에 9.1%, 그리고 Calciodineloid, Diplosaliod 및 Tuberculodinoid 그룹이 각 1종으로 각 3.5%의 출현점유율을 보였다. 시스트 세포밀도는 $260{\sim}1,680cysts\;g-dry^{-1}$의 범위로 육지에 인적한 해역보다 개방해역에서 높은 특징을 보였다. 우점종은 독립영양종인 Gonyaulax scrippsae, G. spinifera complex 및 종속영양종 Protoperidinium 속이었다. 이 중 종속영양종인 Protoperidinium sp.는 울산항 등 태화강 하구역에서 높은 농도로 출현하는 반면, 독립영양종은 울산항 외부의 남부개방해역에서 높게 나타나, 울산항 및 태화강 하구역은 이미 상당부분 부영양화가 진행된 것으로 판단되었다. 특히 열대 및 아열대성 유독와편모조인 Pyrodiniun bahamense var. bahamense가 출현하는 이례적 현상이 보여져, 남해는 물론 동해남부까지도 수온 변화에 따른 열대나 아열대의 새로운 유독편모조류 유입 등에 대한 모니터링 및 관리방안 수립이 시급한 것으로 판단되었다.

  • To describe vertical distribution of dinoflagellate cysts in bottom sediments from Gwangyang Bay, three short-core sediment samples were collected with a gravity core sampler on 24 August 2001: St. 1 core (27.5 cm) in the northeastern part of the bay, St. 14 core (30.5 cm) in the southwestern part, and St. 16 core (25.9 cm) near Yeosu Sound. Total cyst densities generally decreased from the top of the sediment samples through the bottom. The highest cyst densities were observed at 2-3 cm in St. 1 core, 4-5 cm in St. 14 core, and 0-1 cm in St. 16 core respectavely. Living cysts were observed till the bottom of the sediment samples. The increase of heterotrophic dinoflagellate cyst proportion may indicate that the eutrophication process was recently escalated in the study area.

Feeding by the newly described heterotrophic dinoflagellate Aduncodinium glandula: having the most diverse prey species in the family Pfiesteriaceae

  • To explore the feeding ecology of the newly described heterotrophic dinoflagellate Aduncodinium glandula in the family Pfiesteriaceae, its feeding behavior and prey species were investigated. Additionally, the growth and ingestion rates of A. glandula on the mixotrophic dinoflagellates Heterocapsa triquetra and Akashiwo sanguinea, its optimal and suboptimal prey, respectively were measured. A. glandula fed on prey through a peduncle after anchoring to the prey using a tow filament. A. glandula ate all algal prey and perch blood cells tested and had the most diverse prey species in the family Pfiesteriaceae. Unlike for other pfiesteriacean species, H. triquetra and A. sanguinea support the positive growth of A. glandula. However, the cryptophytes Rhodomonas salina and Teleaulax sp. and the phototrophic dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae did not support the positive growth of A. glandula. Thus, A. glandula may have a unique kind of prey and its optimal prey differs from that of the other pfiesteriacean dinoflagellates. With increasing mean prey concentration, the growth rates of A. glandula on H. triquetra and A. sanguinea increased rapidly and then slowed or became saturated. The maximum growth rates when feeding on H. triquetra and A. sanguinea were 1.004 and 0.567 d−1, respectively. Further, the maximum ingestion rates of A. glandula on H. triquetra and A. sanguinea were 0.75 and 1.38 ng C predator−1 d−1, respectively. There is no other pfiesteriacean species having H. triquetra and A. sanguinea as optimal and suboptimal prey. Thus, A. glandula may be abundant during blooms dominated by these species not preferred by the other pfiesteriacean dinoflagellates.

Fatty acid composition and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content of the heterotrophic dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina fed on dried yeast: compared with algal prey

  • The heterotrophic dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina is known to produce high levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) when fed on diverse algal prey. However, large-scale culturing of algal prey species is not easy and requires a large amount of budget, and thus more easily cultivable and low-cost prey is required. Dried yeast was selected as a strong candidate for an alternative prey in our preliminary tests. Thus, we explored the fatty acid composition and DHA production of O. marina fed on dried yeast and compared these results to those of O. marina fed on two algal prey species: the phototrophic dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae and chlorophyte Chlorella sp. powder. O. marina fed on dried yeast, which does not contain DHA, produced the same high level of DHA as those fed on DHA-containing A. carterae. This indicates that O. marina is likely to produce DHA by itself regardless of prey items. Furthermore, the DHA content (and portion of total fatty acid methyl esters) of O. marina satiated with dried yeast, 52.40 pg per cell(and 25.9%), was considerably greater than that of O. marina fed on A. carterae (26.91 pg per cell; 15.7%) or powder of Chlorella sp. powder (21.24 pg per cell; 16.7%). The cost of dried yeast (approximately 10 US dollars for 1 kg dried yeast) was much lower than that of obtaining the algal prey (approximately 160 US dollars for 1 kg A. carterae). Therefore, compared to conventional algal prey, dried yeast is a more easily obtainable and lower-cost prey for use in the production of DHA by O. marina.

2003년 하계 장목만 단일정점에서 종속영양 와편모류와 광합성 와편모류 현존량의 시간적 변화 (Temporal Variations of Heterotrophic- and Photosynthetic Dinoflagellates at a Single Station in Jangmok Bay in Summer 2003)

  • We investigated the temporal variations of heterotrophic dinoflagellates (hereafter HDNF) and photosynthetic dinoflagellates (hereafter PDNF) from 14 June to 4 September 2003 at a single station in Jangmok Bay. We took water samples 47 times from 2 depths (surface and bottom layers) at hide tide. A total of 63 species were encountered and in general the most abundant genera were Prorocentrum and Protoperidinium. The abundance of PDNF and HDNF was in the range of $0.04{\sim}55.8{\times}10^4$ cells/L and in the range of $0.01{\sim}4.35{\times}10^4$ cells/L, respectively. The mean abundance of PDNF was approximately 7 times higher than that of HDNF, and was higher in the surface layer where has enough irradiance for photosynthesis than in the bottom layer. The total dinoflagellate abundance was higher in the NLP (nitrogen limitation period) than in the SLP (silicate limitation period), and the abundance in the hypoxic conditions was similar to that in the normal conditions. The Shannon-Weaver species diversity index were slightly higher in the bottom layer, the SLP and the hypoxic conditions. The PDNF abundance were correlated with temperature, DO, total inorganic nitrogen and phosphate in the whole water column, and the HDNF abundance was significantly correlated with temperature, salinity and DO. This study shows that the dinoflagellate abundance might be affected by abiotic factors such as irradiance, temperature, salinity, DO and the concentrations of inorganic nutrients, and provides baseline information for further studies on plankton dynamics in Jangmok Bay.
