  • Ultrasonic machining (USM) is suitable for machining hard, brittle and non-conductive materials such as silicon, glass and ceramics. Usually, when micro holes are machined on glass by USM, roundness of hole entrance is poor and cracks appear around the hole exit. In this paper the machining characteristics were studied for roundness improvement and exit crack prevention. From experiments, the tool bending and the shape of tool tip affect hole roundness. When the tool tip is hemispherical, good roundness of holes was obtained. The feedrate and the rotational speed of the tool affect the exit crack. With the machining conditions of 150 rpm in spindle speed and $0.5\;{\mu}m/s$ in feedrate, micro holes with less than $100\;{\mu}m$ in diameter were machined without an exit crack.

  • Micromolding methods such as micro-injection molding and micro-compression molding are most suitable for mass production of plastic micro-optics with low cost. In this study, plastic micro-optical components, such as refractive microlenses and diffractive optical elements(DOEs) with various grating patterns, were fabricated using micro-compression molding process. The mold inserts were made by ultrapricision mechanical machining and silicon etching. A micro compression molding system was designed and developed. Polymer powders were used as molded materials. Various defects found during molding were analyzed and the process was optimized experimentally by controlling the governing process parameters such as histories of mold temperature and compression pressure. Mim lenses of hemispherical shape with $250{\mu}m$ diameter were fabricated. The blazed and 4 stepped DOEs with $24{\mu}m$ pitch and $5{\mu}m$ depth were also fabricated. Optical and geometrical properties of plastic molded parts were tested by interferometric technique.

  • A simple simulative test was developed to evaluate stamping formability in plane strain stretching mode. The stamping formability was evaluated by limit punch height(LPH) in plane strain punch stretching test(PSST) compared to limit dome height(LDH) in hemispherical punch stretching test. PSST shows stable plane strain condition and good reproducibility with minimum scatter. Moreover LPH-value in PSST well ranks the stamping formability of various material and correlates with press performance.

  • Shock focusing is related with explosive release of shock wave energy on a narrow spot in a short duration of time triggering a spontaneous high pressure near the focal point. It is well known that reflection of planar incident shock wave from the metallic concave mirror such as ellipsoidal, paraboloidal or hemispherical cavities will focus on a focal point. We intend to improve the computational results using a wave propagation algorithm and to resolve the mushroom-like structure. For computation of the concave cavity flow, it is not easy to use a single-block mesh because of the many singular points in geometry and coordinates. We have employed a uniform Cartesian-grid method for the wave propagation algorithm.

  • By inverting the brightness integral for the dust-scattered continuum, we have determined how the dust grains are distributed inside the Orion nebula. The scattering characteristics of the Orion dust at a given wavelength is kept constant within the nebula, and the geometry of the nebula is assumed to have a hemispherical shape. The resulting radial distance dependence of the distribution of dust number density, $N_d(r)$, shows that the dust grains are depleted at the central region of the Orion nebula and concentrated in the region $5'{\sim}6'$ away from the Trapezium stars. The scattering characteristics of the Orion dust are of moderately forward throwing nature, and the Orion dust has low values of albedo.

  • The conical-ended borehole technique and hemispherical-ended borehole technique are proposed, for the accurate stress measurement within a rock mass. Theory of stress tensor determination and in situ measurement system are presented with successful case examples, and the characteristics of stress distribution within rock masses are examined by the multiple times measurement in a single borehole. Subsequently, the problem in relation to the numerical approach for cavern designing is discussed on the basis of the dependency of the stress discontinuity on the geological discontinuities and so on.

  • A deep sea vehicle must be designed to ensure its safety under ultra-high pressure circumstances. If a pressure housing of a deepsea vehicle is collapsed by ultra-high pressure, the deepsea vehicle may be lost. The objective of this paper is to introduce a design collapse pressure for the deep sea pressure vessel which is composed of one cylinder and two hemispheres. Especially the collapse pressure of hemispherical shell with a hole at top is analyzed by a variational approach (weighted residual method). And for the purpose of design, the salty factor of collapse pressure is presented which is analyzed by interpolation method.

  • The change of flow field and the effects of convective heat transfer on the shape and location of melt/crystal interface has been studied during the crystal growth by the heat exchanger method. Although the thermal structure is stable in the crucible, the flow due to the natural convection driven by radial temperature gradient is significant, because the thermal stability is broken by the hemispherical melt/crystal interface shape. The maximum interface deflection with convection is smaller than without and the convective heat transfer should be considered to simulate the heat transfer process of heat exchanger method rigorously.

  • To provide the various machining materials with excellent quality and dimensional accuracy, high -speed machining is very useful tool as one of the most effective rapid manufacturing processes. However, high-speed machining is not suitable for microscale thin-walled structures because of the lack of the structure stiffness to resist the cutting force. A new method which is able to make a very thin-walled structure rapidly will be proposed in this paper. This method is composed two processes, high-speed machining and filling process. Strong workholding force comes out of the solidification of filling materials. Low-melting point metal alloys are used in order to minimize the thermal effect during phase change and to hold arbitrary shape thin-walled structures quickly during high-speed machining. To verify the usefulness of this method, we will show some applications, for examples thin -wall cylinders and hemispherical shells, and compare the experimental results to analyze the dimensional accuracy of typical parts of the structures.

  • Metallic sandwich plates with Inner dimpled shell subjected to 3-point bending have been analyzed and then optimized for minimum weight. Inner dimpled shells can be easily fabricated by press or roll with high quality precision and bonded with same material skin sheets by resistance welding or adhesive bonding process. Optimized shape of inner dimple is a hemispherical shell to minimize weight without failure, including face yielding, face buckling and inner dimple buckling. It is demonstrated that bending stiffness of sandwich plate is 2 or 3 times than solid plates with same strength
