  • The acute and subacute toxicity of New Woohwangchungsimwon(NWCH) which was used l-muscone as substitutive material of musk were investigated in S.D. rats. In intraperitoneal acute toxicity test. rats(Sprague-Dawley, SPF) were injected intraperitoneally with dosages of 0, 540, 750, 1,070, 1.500 and 3,000 mg/kg. Body weights were significantly decreased at 540 mg/kg dose group in both sexes and abnormal autopsy findings were founded in both sexes at all treated groups. Intraperitoneal $LD_{50}$ of NWCH was 812.3 mg/kg in male and 872.3 mg/kg in female rats. In the subacute toxicity study, NWCH was administrated orally to both sexes of rats for 4 weeks as several doses(0, 320, 800 and 2, 000 mg/kg). There were neither dead animals nor significant changes of body weights during the experimental period. In addition, no differences were found between control and treated groups in clinical signs, urinalysis, hematology, serum biochemical analysis, and other findings. Above data strongly suggest that no observed adverse effect level of NWCH might be over 2,000 mg/kg/day in this study.

  • In order to obtain basic data concerning the treatment of canine demodicosis, 8 Doberman Pinschers were infected with Demodex canis. The clinical signs, were examined after infection, and their hematological and blood chemical values were determined, along with four non-infected control dogs of same breed. The number of white blood cells, especially the number of band neutrophils was significantly higher(p<0.01) in the infected than in the non-infected control dogs. This result indicated that the first episode of secondary infection should be treated with an appropriate antibiotics based on the culture and sensitivity test. The red blood cell counts, packed cell volume, hemoglobin contents, and serum albumin levels were significantly lower (p<0.01~0.001) in the infected than in the non-infected control dogs. These results suggested that the infected dogs had an anemia due to malnutrition. Thus, the infected dogs should be on a well balanced, high protein diet.

  • The nutrients such as protein, calcium, iron and all three of them, either by natural or chemical substances were added to the recipes of yeast breads. Acceptability test was carried for the each formulated bread before selecting eight experimental diets. Sixty albino rats were separated into ten dietary groups including eight enriched breads and two control diets of plain breads from the market, which were used as the carbohydrate sources of the each basal diet. Experimental regime was seven weeks. The growth rate, hematology, total serum protein and organ weights we compared. Generally animals on the enriched bread showed the better growth rate than the rats fed control diet. Diet H enriched protein, iron and calcium by natural foods, brought up the highest weight gain among all of the rats. Hemoglobin concentrations of the rats on the diet H and G (enriched with three nutrients by chemicals) were 14.3 and 14.2 gram % comparing with other two control groups (12.9 and 13.1 gram%). Rats on diet K (fed nothing but diet H enriched bread) showed the significantly higher growth rate, total serum protein and hemoglobin level than these on the diet L (fed only plain bread from the market).

  • The alcohol extract of the larvae of Bombus ignitus, otherwise known as the Bumblebee, was orally administered to rats at doses of 0, 0.04, 0.2, 1 or 2 g/kg as a single oral dose. There were no observed clinical signs or deaths related to treatment in all the groups tested. Therefore, the approximate lethal dose of the alcohol extract of B. ignitus was considered to be higher than 2 g/kg in rats. Mild decreases in body weight gain in male rats were observed dose-dependently within the B. ignitus treated groups over 2 weeks. Throughout the administration periods, no significant changes in diet consumption, ophthalmologic findings, clinical pathology (hematology, clinical chemistry and coagulation) or gross pathology were detected. Minor changes in male rats were found with in the hematological parameters in groups treated with the 0.04 g/kg, 1 g/kg or 2 g/kg of B. ignitus larvae extract, however, all the changes observed were within the physiological range. From these results, it was concluded that there was no evidence of specific toxicity related to the ingestion of alcohol extract of B. ignitus larvae.

  • In this study, we assessed the acute and subacute toxicity of Angelica gigas Nakai (A. gigas Nakai) extracts, which are comprised of decursin and decursinol angelate (D/DA) in rats. For the oral acute toxicity test, Sprague-Dawley (SD) male and female rats were gavaged with two doses of D/DA (200 and 2,000 mg/kg body weight) and then observed for any toxic symptoms for 2 weeks. The LD$_{50}$ value for the rats was greater than 2,000 mg/kg body weight for both male and female rats, which indicates that there were no toxic symptoms induced by doses of up to 2,000 mg/kg body weight. For the subacute toxicity study, rats were treated with D/DA at doses of 2 and 20 mg/kg body weight once a day for 30 days. There were no significant changes in body weight and food intake observed during the subacute toxicity study. In addition, no differences were observed between the control and treated groups when urinalysis was conducted or when hematology and biochemical parameters were evaluated. Finally, histopathological examination of the organs did not reveal any lesions in the control or treated groups. Taken together, these findings indicate that D/DA is safe and non-toxic.

  • Cancer is now the main cause of increasing mortality throughout the world. Minor alterations in the cell cycle which are inherited and not removed by apoptosis are important rsik factors. Blood cancers are asmong the types which most readily cause death. Here in this study, usual but important factors such as age, gender, Rh and ABO blood typing, weight, and platelet counts are analyzed for impact on blood cancers. Frequencies and distributions, correlations and chi-square test were utilized in order to clarify the perspective of important factors. Our statistical results show males and females to have same risk in blood cancer but A blood type (40%) along with positive Rh (73%) had the highest risk. Low platelet counts are related to more than 80% of cases. Obesity has a statistically ignorable role in blood cancer prevalence. The fact that blood cancer cases increase during the second decade of life (45.7%) which might be because of involvement of maturation processes.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the levels of anxiety, depression, physical symptoms, and supportive care needs in patients with hematologic malignancy and to identify predictive factors of supportive care needs. Methods: The data were collected from 100 subjects undergoing treatments during 2010 in Korea. The questionnaires included the Hospital Anxiety-Depression Scale, the M. D. Anderson Symptom Inventory, and the Supportive Care Needs Survey-Short Form 34. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Forty percent of the subjects had anxiety and 58% had depression. Thirty-eight percent of the subjects reported to have moderate-to-severe levels of physical symptoms. The most severe physical symptom was lack of appetite, followed by fatigue and pain. In terms of supportive care needs, the health system and information domain showed the highest among all domains. Supportive care needs had a significant positive correlation with anxiety, depression, and physical symptoms. And its predictive factors were identified as anxiety, physical symptoms and marital status, with the explanatory power of 48.9%. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that anxiety and physical symptoms should be assessed and treated to meet the supportive care needs of patients with hematologic malignancies.
