  • The specific purpose was to determine the effect of walking on the body composition and hematological index of hemodialysis patients in order to confirm the relationship between activity and health level of hemodialysis patients. The research method is a cross-sectional descriptive survey conducted in hemodialysis patients. The subjects were 66 hemodialysis patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment in B city. As a result of the study, walking was decreased in hemodialysis patients, and there was a difference in hematological index according to walking, but there was no difference in body composition. As body weight increased, skeletal mass, body fat mass, body mass index, abdominal fat percentage, basal metabolism, and protein increased, but total cholesterol and high-density cholesterol decreased. This study proposes to expand the number of subjects of hemodialysis patients to investigate by adding nutritional intake in addition to walking, body composition and hematological index.

  • To estimate the source of variance components for some hematological parameters and assess the utility of the conventional population-based reference interval, this study computed index of individuality for blood samples, which were from 13 dogs drawn once weekly for 4 consecutive weeks. Results were subjected to nested analysis of variance. For all parameters measured between-dog variations were greater than within-dog variation. Except for the parameters RBC and MCHC the index of individuality was <1.4. The low reliability coefficient and high index of individuality of ${\leq}0.8$ were found for the majority of hematological parameters. In practical term, the present study indicated that use of hemogram profiles alone in the evaluating clinical state of a single patient should be avoided because of their physiological or natural random variations, and that comparing a single measurement on the blood analytes from an individual dog to the conventional population-based reference range may be too insensitive to detect any significant changes in the blood components of that particular dog. A single measurement may not characterize an individual's average concentration of the parameters even shortterm period.

  • This research analyzed the hematological index and health related habits such as alcohol drinking, smoking and exercise, by classifying 539 middle-aged men (age: 40 - 59) into a normal weight group, an overweight group and an obese group, according to BMI (body mass index). As a result, 33.6% (n = 181) of subjects had a BMI of 23 or less and 30.2% (n = 163) were overweight and 36.2% (n = 195) were obese (BMI > 25). The average systolic/diastolic blood pressures of total subjects were 130.96mmHg and 80.38mmHg, respectively. And the average pressure of normal subjects was 126.85/77.57mmHg, which was significantly lower than in overweight and obese subjects. Diastolic blood pressure shows significant differences among the three groups. The overall average cholesterol level of normal subjects was 193.81mg/dl, which was significantly lower than those in overweight subjects. Those in obese subjects were significantly higher than in overweight subjects. The GOT (glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase), GPT (glutamic pyrutic transaminase), ${\gamma}$-GTP (gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase) levels of obese subjects were significantly higher than in the overweight subjects. Frequency of alcohol drinking showed no significant difference among the groups. The smoking ratio in the obese group was higher than in the normal and overweight groups. The ratio of smokers was 53.1 %, and the alcohol drinking ratio was 81.0% of the total subjects. The frequency of drinking showed significant correlations with systolic blood pressure (p < 0.05) and diastolic blood pressures (p < 0.01) and ${\gamma}$-GTP (p < 0.01). The duration of smoking showed a negative correlation (p < 0.01) with diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol and ${\gamma}$-GTP. On the other hand, exercising frequency showed negative correlations with blood glucose, ${\gamma}$-GTP and GPT(p < 0.01). These hematological indices were correlated with health related habits such as alcohol drinking, smoking and lack of exercise, and to be the cause of chronic diseases. Therefore, proper nutritional education is needed to establish advisable health related habits to maintain proper body weight. (J Community Nutrition 8(2): 63-68, 2006)

  • This study investigated hematological index from clinically healthy Korean Domestic Shorthair (KDSH) cats and characterized breed-specific hematological features. Blood samples from clinically healthy and FIV/FeLV-negative KDSH cats were used in this study (n = 34). After hematological analysis, reference intervals (RIs) of KDSH cats were established and compared with published feline RIs. Most of the RIs were similar to published RIs, however, the RI of MCV tends to be lower than the published RIs and the RIs of Hgb, MCH, MCHC, and CHCM were higher than the published RIs. This study suggests that breed-specific RIs, especially MCV, Hgb, MCH, MCHC, and CHCM, may be required for KDSH cats rather than applying the published RIs.

  • Hematological analysis can provide crucial information for monitoring the health of fish. However, there is no current information available regarding hematological changes in olive flounder following infection by Vibrio scophthalmi. In this study, hematological and biochemical alterations were determined in olive flounder infected by the high virulence strain (HVS) and low virulence strain (LVS) of V. scophthalmi. Survival in serum, skin mucus, and macrophages of olive flounder was also compared between the HVS and LVS. The results demonstrated that the hematocrit value in infected fish declined from 23.4% at 0 h to 18.0% at 168 h post infection. The total protein concentration in fish infected with the HVS was significantly higher than in fish infected with the LVS and a non-infected control. Lysozyme activity was significantly different between infected and control fish. The HVS survived in serum and cell numbers increased substantially, while cell numbers of the LVS in serum decreased. These changes in hematological characteristics in fish infected by V. scophthalmi can be used as an effective and sensitive index to monitor the physiological and pathological conditions of fish. The survival and reproduction of V. scophthalmi in host serum, skin mucus, and macrophages play a major role in systemic infection and can serve as a virulence indicator for different strains.

  • The study investigated the changes in growth performance, hematological parameters, plasma components, and stress indicators of juvenile starry flounder, Platichthys stellatus, depending on varying exposure to hexavalent chromium. P. stellatus was exposed to waterborne chromium at 0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 ppb for 4 weeks. The result showed that Cr exposure resulted in decreased daily length gain (DLG), daily weight gain (DWG), condition factor (CF), and hepatosomatic index (HIS) in P. stellatus. In terms of hematological parameters, red blood cell (RBC) count, hematocrit (Ht), and hemoglobin (Hb) significantly decreased at 400 ppb after 2 weeks. In terms of plasma components, inorganic analysis was unchanged and cholesterol, an organic component, considerably increased at 400 ppb after 4 weeks. Plasma enzyme components including glutamic oxalate transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvate transaminase (GPT) were significantly increased. Stress indicators such as cortisol and glucose were notably increased over 100 ppb after 4 weeks with increasing chromium concentration. The results indicate that exposure to waterborne Cr induced toxic effects on growth, hematological parameters, plasma components, and stress indicators.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between vibration exposure and skeletal muscle mass index through a single university health check-up. Methods: We used data from 134,067 male subjects who received a general health check-up or vibration exposure health check-up out of the 1,515,322 people who underwent medical check-up at a local university hospital from 2002 to 2018. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted for comparing the association between skeletal muscle mass index and demographic and hematological variables in both groups. Mixed linear model analysis after controlling demographic and hematological variables was used to analyze the differences in skeletal muscle mass index between groups at every visit over 10 years. Results: In the Pearson correlation test, the variables that showed different results when comparing the two groups were C-reactive protein (p=0.001) and glycated hemoglobin (p=0.002) in the vibration exposure group and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (p<0.001) and vitamin D (p<0.001) in the general group. After the adjustment of demographic and hematologic variables, the skeletal muscle mass index at every visit was markedly decreased in the vibration exposure group (p<0.001). Conclusions: In the vibration exposure group, the skeletal muscle mass index showed a tendency to decrease markedly over time compared to the general health check-up group, which showed that C-reactive protein and glycated hemoglobin would have an influence on skeletal muscle index in male workers exposed to vibration.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between shiftwork and skeletal muscle mass index in a single university health check-up. Methods: We used data from 98,227 workers who answered in a special interview on health check-up at a local university hospital from 2014 to 2020. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted for comparing the association between skeletal muscle mass index and demographic and hematological variables in shiftwork and non-shiftwork groups. Mixed linear model analysis after controlling demographic and hematological variables was used to analyze the difference of skeletal muscle mass index between groups at every visit for seven years. Results: In linear regression analysis, the variables most significantly correlated with skeletal muscle index in both groups were shiftwork(p=0.049), BMI(p<0.001), hypertension(p=0.024), platelet(p<0.001), total protein (p<0.001), AST(p=0.028), ALT(p=0.003), ALP(p<0.001), total cholesterol(p=0.002), triglyceride(p=0.019), BUN (p=0.001), creatinine(p<0.001), and uric acid(p=0.002). After the adjustment for demographic and hematologic variables, the skeletal muscle mass index at every visit was decreased both in the shiftwork group and non-shiftwork group. The slope of the shiftwork group was -0.240 and non-shiftwork group -0.149, showing a significant difference (p<0.001). Conclusions: In the shiftwork group, the skeletal muscle mass index showed a tendency to decrease markedly over time compared to the non-shiftwork group. It is presumed that shift workers' skeletal muscle health was adversely affected by changes in the biological clock due to changes in wake-up and sleep patterns, and changes in food intake.
