There was a mass outbreak of death caused by transport stress and malnutrition in Japanese macaques imported from Japan at a farm stock in Korea, which were diagnosed on the ground of history taking, clinical finding, hematological examination and necropsy. Twenty eight Japanese macaques imported from Japan died suddenly from the 4th day after arrival in a farm. These animals were confined very small cages individually and lose the appetite for 10 days from shipping. Main clinical findings observed from alive Japanese macaques consisted of hypothermia and dehydration. On hematological observation for typical 4 cases showed increased erythrocytes and packed cell volume. On serum biochemical examination for 3 cases showed hypoglycemia, whereas blood urea nitrogen, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase were increased. On necropsy for 3 cases, hemorrhage and congestion were observed on the lung and the walls of stomach and intestine were thinned. Histologically, hemorrhagic pneumonia and enteritis with loss of villi were seen. The death of these animal was caused by poor management during transport, which was resulted in transport stress and malnutrition.
To study the effect of Kamidaebotang on the hypothyroidism induced by thiourea in SD(Splague Dawley) rats, the weight of thyroid gland, the level of serum $T_3\;and\;T_4$. total cholesterol, hematological changes and histopathological findings were measured. The following results were obtained. 1. Thyroid gland weight of the Kamidaebotang B treated group was significantly increased as compared with that of control group(p<0.05). 2. The level of serum $T_3$ of the Kamidaebotang B treated group was slightly increased as compared with that of control group. But no significant changes appeared between two groups. 3. The level of serum $T_4$ of the Kamidaebotang A, B treated groups were significantly increased as compared with that of control group(p<0.05). 4. Total cholesterol of the Kamidaebotang A, B treated groups were not significant changes as compared with that of control group. 5. Hematological data of the Kamidaebotang A, B treated groups were not significant changes as compared with that of control group. 6. Histopathologically, Kamidaebotang B administration recovered effectly the dystropy, degeneration of thyroid follicle induced by thiourea. From above results, it is suggested that Kamidaebotang B is available to the hypothyroidism induced by thiourea in rats. Therefore, Kamidabotang B seems to be applicable to hypothyroidism in clinical practice.
Objectives The present study aimed to investigate the effects of acupuncture and herbal external preparation on wound healing procedure in a deep partial thickness burn model in rats. Methods A total of 40 male Sprague-Dawley rats were allocated into four groups with an equal number in each group: acupuncture treatment group, herbal external perparation group, Silver sulfadiazine dressing group and control group. We describe the effect of acupuncture and herbal external preparation on morphologic and histologic changes, epithelial growth factor (EGF), hematological value of the deep partial thickness burn wound in rats. Results At 21th day after wounding the wound size in acupuncture treat group and herbal external preparation group were decreased more significantly compared to control group. In addition, epidermal regeneration on acupuncture treatment was than other treatment and control group in histological finding. Hematological findings revealed that acupuncture treatment group and herbal external prepartion group was more effective than control group in reducing inflammation response induced by burn. In acupuncture treated group, neutrophil and leukocyte level were significantly decreased compared to other treatment group. Also, this study showed that EGF was obviously expressed in nascent tissue when wounds were treated with the acupuncture and herbal external preparation after injury. In particular, acupuncture treatment group had a significant increase of EGF expression in burn wound healing area when compared with the other treatment groups. Conclusions These findings suggest that acupuncture and herbal external prepration may improve burn wound healing through decreasing inflammatory reaction, increasing tissue regeneration and expression of EGF. Moreover, acupuncture treatment could be more effective in comparison with Silver sulfadiazine dressing.
This study was done to find the method of the extermination of Fasciola hepatica matacercariae. And the artificial infection was carried out with 30 metacercarae exposed to 5% ammonia water and not-exposed to 5% ammonia water. Serial determinations of live weight, red blood cell, hemoglobin, packed cell volume, and eosinophils were performed in rats at 7 days interval for 16 weeks after infection (WAI). Recovery of worm burden and microscopic findings of livr was performed in rats at 10 WAI. The results in this work were summarized as follows; 1. Fasciola spp metacercariae exposed to 5% ammonia water have lost their ability of infection. 2. In teh exposed group, the mean of worm recovered was 2.25 and the common bile duct was swelling up to 0.71cm in diameter. 3. The value of live weight was different in two groups as the not-exposed group and the exposed group were 321.28, 384.38 at 10 WAI, respectively. 4. In the not-exposed group, at 7 WAI, hemoglobin at 5 WAI and packed cell volume at 7 WAI wre minimally decreased to $5.84{\times}10^{-6}/mm^3$, 11.53g/dl and 43.2%, respectively. But those three values were slowly increased at 10 WAI. Rercent cosinophil was increased to 12.2% at 4 WAI and slightly decreased to 7.9% at 10 WAI. But there are no stastistical singnificance between the exposed group and the normal control group. 5. In histolgical findings in the not-exposed group, the dilated common bile ducts and intrahepatic bile ducts showed distinct hyperplasia of the epithelium. Lymphocytes and eosinophils were infilterated around the bile ducts. The hepatic cells and Kupffer cells showed swollen appearance.
Objectives: Radix Ginseng has been used for thousands of years to treat a wide variety of diseases. Radix ginseng has also been used as a traditional medicine for boosting Qi energy and tonifying the spleen and lungs. Traditionally, its effect could be obtained orally. Nowadays, a new method, the injection of herbal medicine, is being used. This study was performed to investigate the single-dose intravenous toxicity of water-soluble ginseng pharmacopuncture (WSGP) in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Methods: All experiments were carried out at Biotoxtech, an institute authorized to perform non-clinical studies under the regulation of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP). At the age of six weeks, 40 SD rats, 20 male rats and 20 female rats, were allocated into one of 4 groups according to the dosages they would receive. The WSGP was prepared in the Korean Pharmacopuncture Institute under the regulation of Korea-Good Manufacturing Practice (K-GMP). Dosages of WSGP were 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mL/animal for the experimental groups, and normal saline was administered to the control group. The rat's general conditions and body weights, the results of their hematological and biochemistry tests, and their necropsy and histopathological findings were investigated to identify the toxicological effect of WSGP injected intravenously. The effect was examined for 14 days after the WSGP injection. This study was performed under the approval of the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee of Biotoxtech. Results: No deaths were found in this single-dose toxicity test on the intravenous injection of WSGP, and no significant changes in the rat's general conditions and body weights, the results on their hematological and biochemistry test, and their necropsy findings were observed during the test. The local area of the injection site showed minial change. The lethal dose was assumed to be over 1.0 mL/animal in both sexes. Conclusion: These results indicate that WSGP is safe at dosages up to 1 mL/animal.

This study was performed to determine the effect of green tea on the late biological effect (survival, hematological change, carcinogenesis) of mice irradiated with 3 Gy of gamma-radiation. There was little difference in body weights between normal and irradiated mice. Survival rate were decreased in irradiated mice and the survival rate and mean survival time of the groups treated with green tea were far better than the irradiation control group. An elevation of mean number of total leukocyte or lymphocyte counts was seen at week 12 of the group treated with green tea. Stimulated recovery by the extract from green tea was also observed in thrombocyte. Main gross findings of irradiated mice were appeared as enlargement of spleen, thymus and liver, tumorous nodules in lung and cyst or mass in ovary. Microscopically, there were various findings including hematopoietic and lymphoid tumor, lung cancer, ovarian cancer and cancer of other lesions. Green tea reduced the incidence of tumor development. Further studies are needed to characterize better the protective nature of active compounds.

This study was experiment on the safety of rat(Sprague-Dawley) exposed to natural herb oil(BM-solution). BM-solution was administered by inhalation to rats with the dose level of low(30 mg/8 min), middle(30 mg/4 min) and high(50 mg/4 min) in an airtight room for 4 weeks, respectively. Each groups, consisting of 5 rats, was examined for body weight changes, hematological analysis, serum biochemical analysis, organ weight, and histopathological findings, respectively. There were, dose-dependently, no changes of body weight and organ weights, no hematological anomalousness, and no other serum biochemical abnormality from the experiments. In addition, BM-solution was shown to have no specific toxicity by gross and histopathological findings. Therefore, it was concluded that BM-solution had no side effects on rats for 4 weeks.
This study was performed to determine the optimal dose of laser energy for wound healing. The skin wound with 8mm diameter was induced over the lumbar vertebrae of the rats, and wound squares, scab hardness, hematologic findings and histopathlogic findings according to irradiation of laser energy were studied. 1. Wound square was significantly reduced at Day 1 (p<0.01), 2 (p<0.01), 3 (p<0.05), 7 (p<0.01) and 8 (p<0.05), respectively in experimental groups, especially group II, compared with control group. 2. Scab hardness was significantly increased at Day 1 (p<0.01), 2 (p<0.01), 3 (p<0.05), 5 (p<0.01) and 7 (p<0.01), respectively in experimental groups, especially group II, compared with control group. 3. In hematological findings, red blood cells and white blood cells in experimental group were increased according to the lapse of days, but they were not significant. 4. In histopathologic findings, experimental groups, especially group II, revealed early scab formation, early appearance of phagocytes and fibroblast, rapid growth of granulation tissue and collagen, and promotion of wound healing in the result.
This study was performed to evaluate repeated-dose toxicities of STB-HO-BM in Sprague-Dawley rats. STB-HO-BM was administered orally to rats at dose levels of 0, 100, 300 and 1,000 mg/kg/day for 13 weeks. In recent study, there were no dose related changes in mortality, clinical signs, body weight changes, food and water consumption, opthalmoscopy, organ weights, urine analysis, hematological findings, and biochemical examination of all animals treated with STB-HO-BM. Gross and histopathological findings revealed no evidence of specific toxicity related to STB-HO-BM. These results suggest that the oral no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) of STB-HO-BM may be over 1,000 mg/kg in rats.
This study was designed to evaluate a repeated oral dose toxicity of a new hepatotherapeutic agent GODEX in Sprague-Dawley rats. Male and female rats were orally administered with dosages of 500, 100, 20, and 0 /kg/day of GODEX daily for 4 weeks, respectively. There were no dose-related changes in clinical signs, body weight changes, food and water consumption, opthalmoscopy, organ weights, urine analysis, biochemical examination, and hematological findings of all animals treated with GODEX. Gross and histopathological findings revealed no evidence of specific toxicity related to GODEX. These indicate that GODEX may have no side effects and its oral maximum tolerated dose value may be over 500 mg/kg in rats.
