Development of Dynamic Balancing Techniques of a Rotor System Using Genetic Algorithm (유전자 알고리즘을 적용한 로터 시스템의 동적 밸런싱 기법 개발)

  • The dynamic balancing of a rotor system is needed to alleviate the imbalances originating from various sources encountered during blade manufacturing processes and environmental factors. This work aims at developing a comprehensive analysis system which consists of cumulative module of test D/B and selection of optimal control parameters. This system can be used for the dynamic balancing of helicopter rotors based on tracking results from the whirl tower test. For simplicity of the analysis, a linear relation is assumed between the balancing input parameters and the blade track responses leading to influence coefficients and thereby the rotor system identification is made. In addition, the balancing parameters of the individual blades are sought using the genetic algorithm and the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated in comparison with the test results.

  • This paper presents development activities of the T700/701K turbo-shaft engine for Korean Utility Helicopter(KUH). The T700/701K is the first rear-drive variant of the GE's T700 engine which is proven for military applications in the world. The main workscope of the development includes a modification from a front-drive engine to a rear-drive one, an performance enhancement of the power turbine and an incorporation of two channel FADEC(Full Authority Digital Engine Control) system for more reliable operation. The first engine run for development and qualification test was successfully completed in 2008. Since the PFRT(Preliminary Flight Rating Test) has been completed, the first flight of the engine installed in the first prototype of KUH has been successfully demonstrated in March, 2010 and the engine installation compatibility tests are being carried out during KUH flight test. The test and evaluation for qualification has been done except for the low cycle fatigue test up to date.

  • An anti-collision light of a rotary-wing aircraft is used for the purpose of preventing collision during the operation of an aircraft and is a key component to ensure flight safety. The anti-collision lights of the Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) consist of upper and lower lights, and the power supply of anti-collision lights mounted on the aircraft. The anti-collision light is designed as a dual structure capable of brightness control and selective lighting. During the operation after delivery of the aircraft, abnormal lighting of anti-collision light occurred. In this paper, a comprehensive review of the aircraft system and component level was conducted to solve these phenomena at first. Then, the causes of anti-collision light anomalies were analyzed and the design changes are presented. The validity of design changes has been verified through the component and aircraft system ground/flight test.

Pre-Hospital and In-Hospital Management of an Abdominal Impalement Injury Caused by a Tree Branch

  • In South Korea, most patients who visit trauma centers with abdominal injuries have blunt trauma, and penetrating injuries are relatively rare. In extremely rare cases, some patients are admitted with a long object penetrating their abdomen, and these injuries are referred to as abdominal impalement injuries. Most cases of impalement injuries lead to fatal bleeding, and patients often die at the scene of the accident. However, patients who survive until reaching the hospital can have a good prognosis with optimal treatment. A 68-year-old female patient was admitted to the trauma center with a 4-cm-thick tree branch impaling her abdomen. The patient was transported by a medical helicopter and had stable vital signs at admission. The branch sticking out of the abdomen was quite long; thus, we carefully cut the branch with an electric saw to perform computed tomography (CT). CT revealed no signs of major blood vessel injury, but intestinal perforation was observed. During laparotomy, the tree branch was removed after confirming that there were no vascular injuries, and enterostomy was performed because of extensive intestinal injury. After treating other injuries, the patient was discharged without any complications except colostomy. Abdominal impalement injuries are treated using various approaches depending on the injury mechanism and injured region. However, the most important consideration is that the impaled object should not be removed during transportation and resuscitation. Instead, it should only be removed after checking for injuries to blood vessels during laparotomy in an environment where injury control is possible.

LUAV Software Certification Method using Checklists based on DO-178C (DO-178C 기반 체크리스트를 활용한 무인동력비행장치 소프트웨어 인증 방안)

  • As seen in the case of the Boeing 737 Max accident, the proportion of aircraft software is rapidly increasing. However, it is vulnerable to safety issues. In case of domestic aircraft software, to operate a Light Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (LUAV) less than an empty weight of 150 kg, safety certification is required for an Ultra-Light Vehicle (ULV). However, software certification procedure is not included. Since the use of LUAVs has increased recently, software verification is required. This paper proposed a checklist of LUAV software that could be applied to LUAV referring DO-178C, an aviation software certification standard. A case study of applying the proposed checklist to the Model-based Development-based Helicopter Flight Control Computer (FCC) project currently used by domestic and foreign advanced companies and institutions was conducted.

Effects of Meteorological Conditions and Self-instruction on Anxiety and Performance of Helicopter Pilots in Flight (기상 조건과 자기 교시가 조종 중인 헬리콥터 조종사의 불안 및 수행에 미치는 영향)

  • Anxiety is known to upset the balance of the attentional system and prioritize the stimulus-driven system over the goal-directed system; however, self-instruction induces goal-directed behavior with the self-regulation effect. This study verified the effects of meteorological and self-instruction conditions on pilot anxiety and flight task performance for in-service pilots in a virtual reality environment. The meteorological conditions were divided into visual meteorological and very low visibility conditions, and the flight tasks were conducted by varying whether or not self-instruction was performed. The experiment results reveal that anxiety and heart rate were higher, and the performance of the flight task was lower in the very low visibility condition. However, anxiety and heart rate were lower, and the performance of the flight task was higher in the self-instruction condition. This result suggests that accidents due to difficulty in flight may increase because of anxiety, but such accidents may decrease because of flight performance improvement by self-instruction.

  • The Korea market for LUAV (Light Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) weighing less than 150 kg is growing rapidly. As a result, the market for manufacturing and operating LUAV is expanding, and domestic development of parts and finished products is actively taking place. However, the flight control system and onboard software, which are key components of domestic LUAV, are largely dependent on overseas products due to the excessive cost and period required for development. This paper presented a domestic software development and certification procedure using DO-178C, a guideline for aircraft software development, and the Model-based Development method, and conducted a survey of those involved in the development, manufacturing, and certification of LUAV and analyzed the results. In addition, a case study was conducted to apply the software development plan to the helicopter FCC (Flight Control Computer).

Aerial Application Tests with Some Low toxicity Insecticides Against the Fall Webworm, Hyphantria cunea Drury (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) (저독성약제(低毒性藥劑)를 이용(利用)한 미국흰불나방의 항공방제효과(航空防除效果))

  • Aerial application tests with a biological insecticide (Thuricide$^{(R)}$) and two low toxicity insecticides, Diflubenzuron (Dimilin$^{(R)}$) and Triflumuron (Alsystin$^{(R)}$) were carried out against the fall webworm (Hyphantria cunea Drury). For experimental application by helicopter, dilutions of 30x and 45x Thuricide, 180x and 240x Alsystin, and 180x Dimilin were utilized. The solutions were applied at a rate of 30 liters per hectare. The results are as follows: 1) All treatments, Dimilin 25% wp, Thuricide wp, and Alsystin 25% wp, were found to very effec tive against fall webworm larvae. Percentages of mortality averaged between 93.9% and 97%. 2) No significant differences in percentages of larval kill were found between dilutions of Thuricide (30x and 45x) or Alsystin (180x and 240x). 3) Assessment of parasite densities in the treated areas 35 days after treatment indicated that percentages of reduction for all five species found, including Brachymeria lasus(Walker) (=obscurata [Walker]), were lower than for areas treated with the conventional insecticide Diplox$^{(R)}$ (trichlorfon) 25% wp. In particular, the percentage of reduction in Thuricide-treated areas was only 21% as compared with the untreated (control) areas. 4) Aerial applications of Dimilin were very effective and economical for control of the fall webworm by comparison with [aerial] applications of Thuricide.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the visual landscape modelling on Josun royal tombs and surrounding. The visual landscape of traditional heritage is illustrated by the main view points of analysis. This analysis examines limited view points and cannot reflect a reality of environments. Nowadays various equipments and methodologies are developed for the visual landscape research. This study used new tools for analysis which are Sketch up (3D simulation) and mini helicopter (UAV). With those tools, this research examines not only view points of the analysis but also axis views and disincentive environments as a complex analysis. First of all, the research examined 3D modelling for the virtual simulation and drew coordinates and routes for the UAV operating. Secondly, UAV followed this routes and took linear and continuous views that are real scenes. As a result, it drew 3D simulation could illustrate and control the changing of environments such as the forest density and seasonal variations. Thus, comparing both of them shows efficiently landscape analysis. Thirdly, the study compared virtual and real landscape. Using this 3D modelling, this paper able to elaborate heritage environment and surrounding which omitted by view point analysis. Although this study has limitation practice and exercise on the field, the results and suggestions contribute to the various historic heritage managements and conservations. Moreover, it helps to explain the complex and dimensional landscape analysis.
