Artificial icing test and wind tunnel test can be performed to reduce the development period when a rotorcraft is required operation under icing situations. Artificial icing test of the KUH(Korean Utility Helicopter) was performed in advance to verify anti-icing and de-icing performance before natural icing test. Although high-precision sensor, the CCP(Cloud Combination Probe) is used to measure icing test condition parameters such as LWC(Liquid Water Content) and MVD(Median Volume Diameter), the measured values need to be verified in various methods due to the possibility of uncertainties which are the test atmosphere environment, sensor errors, and etc. The calculated LWC from the ice thickness cumulated on the fuselage of the KUH is compared to the measured value by CCP, and the results show the effective indirect method to check the test conditions.

Lightning can deliver large amounts of energy to the aircraft in a short period of time, resulting in catastrophic consequence. In particular, lightning strikes accompanied by high temperature heat and current can damage aircraft surface and internal electronic equipment, seriously affecting flight safety. Lightning experiments to analyze this effect use a Component A waveform with a maximum current of 200 kA as specified in SAE ARP 5412B. However, the actual lightning occurs mostly below 35kA and lightning indirect tests are conducted by reducing waveforms to prevent damage to internal electronic equipment. In this study, we examine previous methods to plot the Component A reduced waveform and identify their limitations. We then propose a new method to plot the reduced waveform based on adjusting the correction factor of the aircraft lightning Component A waveform. Finally, the electromagnetic analysis software EMA3D was used to compare the internal induced current size reduction ratio of the internal cable harness of the EC-155B helicopter.

In government procurement programs, cost estimation and analysis support funding decisions and are the basis for other major decisions, too. Such estimating and analyzing the cost of the weapon systems are crucial in execution of the defense budget. However, existing cost estimations and analyses have focused on domestic R&D projects, thus those are not valid in application to foreign weapon acquisitions. This study aims at foreign weapon systems that are acquired from Direct Commercial Sales. Because the data for price estimation of a foreign weapon is usually not available, we suggest a price estimation model based on performance factors of the weapon. In this study, the proper price of the weapon system is estimated using the parametric cost estimating model. Using the data of helicopter-launched anti-tank guided missiles worldwide, we analyze the effect of each performance factor on the weapon system price by regression analysis, and use step-wise and ridge regression analysis to remove multi-collinearity. This study hopefully contributes to more reasonable decision making on proper price of weapons.
In this work, a contour-based section analysis method incorporating the use of Bézier curves is attempted for the construction of optimal structural design framework of composite helicopter blades. The suggested section analysis method is able to analyze composite blades with solid cores made of arbitrary materials and geometric shapes. The contour-based section analysis method is integrated into a blade structural optimization framework to confirm the efficiency of the present approach. The numerical simulation result demonstrates that the optimized blade configurations are obtained with a reduction in mass by 52%, compared to the baseline blade. For the structural optimization of composite blades with 19 subsections, it takes about one hour for the successful optimization while satisfying all the design constraints considered in this study, which reveals the efficiency of the present approach.

This paper studies the simulations of active airframe vibration controls for the Sikorsky X2 helicopter with a lift-offset coaxial rotor. The 4P hub vibratory loads of the X2TD rotor are obtained from the previous work using a rotorcraft comprehensive analysis code, CAMRAD II. The finite element analysis software, MSC.NASTRAN, is used to model the structural dynamics of the X2TD airframe and to analyze the 4P vibration responses of the airframe. A simulation study using Active Vibration Control System(AVCS) with Fx-LMS algorithm to reduce the airframe vibrations is conducted. The present AVCS is modeled using MATLAB Simulink. When AVCS is applied to the X2TD airframe at 250 knots, the 4P longitudinal and vertical vibration responses at the specified airframe positions, such as the pilot seat, co-pilot seat, engine deck, and prop gearbox, are reduced by 30.65 ~ 94.12 %.

In South Korea, most patients who visit trauma centers with abdominal injuries have blunt trauma, and penetrating injuries are relatively rare. In extremely rare cases, some patients are admitted with a long object penetrating their abdomen, and these injuries are referred to as abdominal impalement injuries. Most cases of impalement injuries lead to fatal bleeding, and patients often die at the scene of the accident. However, patients who survive until reaching the hospital can have a good prognosis with optimal treatment. A 68-year-old female patient was admitted to the trauma center with a 4-cm-thick tree branch impaling her abdomen. The patient was transported by a medical helicopter and had stable vital signs at admission. The branch sticking out of the abdomen was quite long; thus, we carefully cut the branch with an electric saw to perform computed tomography (CT). CT revealed no signs of major blood vessel injury, but intestinal perforation was observed. During laparotomy, the tree branch was removed after confirming that there were no vascular injuries, and enterostomy was performed because of extensive intestinal injury. After treating other injuries, the patient was discharged without any complications except colostomy. Abdominal impalement injuries are treated using various approaches depending on the injury mechanism and injured region. However, the most important consideration is that the impaled object should not be removed during transportation and resuscitation. Instead, it should only be removed after checking for injuries to blood vessels during laparotomy in an environment where injury control is possible.
The accurate wing flexure model is required to improve the transfer alignment performance of guided weapon system mounted on a wing of fighter aircraft or armed helicopter. In order to solve this problem, mechanical or stochastical modeling methods have been studying, but modeling accuracy is too low to be applied to weapon systems. The deep learning techniques that have been studying recently are suitable for nonlinear. However, operating fighter aircraft for deep-learning modeling to secure a large amount of data is practically difficult. In this paper, it was used to generate amount of flexure data samples that are similar to the actual flexure data. And it was confirmed that generated data is similar to the actual data by utilizing "measures of similarity" which measures how much alike the two data objects are.

The present study concerns assessing the operability of a surface combatant, based on the Percent-Time-Operable (PTO). For validation of the seakeeping analysis in the regular waves, the model test is first conducted in a towing tank. The seakeeping analysis results in the regular waves are expanded to the irregular waves, considering the wave spectra around the Korean peninsula and in North Pacific. The seakeeping criteria of the surface combatant in transit, combat, replenishment operation, and survival condition are defined by the literature review. An annual operation scenario of the surface combatant in two operation areas, i.e., advance speed and wave direction, are combined with the seakeeping analysis results to assess PTO. The main constraints of operability of the surface combatant are identified as the pitch angle and vertical velocity at the helicopter deck.
In this study, an optimal structural design framework has been developed for the structural design of composite helicopter blades. The optimal design framework is constructed using PSGA (Particle Swarm assisted Genetic Algorithm), which combines the genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimizer. The optimization process consists of a finite element (FE) modeling over the blade section, two-dimensional (2D) cross-sectional FE analysis, and 1D rotating blade analysis. In the design process, the geometric curves and surfaces are formed using the B-spline scheme while discretizing the sections via a FE mesh generation program Gmsh. The blade cross-sections are created in accordance with the design variables when performing the blade structural analysis. The proposed optimization design framework is applied to a modernization of the HART II (Higher-harmonic Aeroacoustics Rotor Test II) blades. It is demonstrated that an improved blade design is reached through the current optimization framework with the satisfaction of all design requirements set for the study.

As seen in the case of the Boeing 737 Max accident, the proportion of aircraft software is rapidly increasing. However, it is vulnerable to safety issues. In case of domestic aircraft software, to operate a Light Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (LUAV) less than an empty weight of 150 kg, safety certification is required for an Ultra-Light Vehicle (ULV). However, software certification procedure is not included. Since the use of LUAVs has increased recently, software verification is required. This paper proposed a checklist of LUAV software that could be applied to LUAV referring DO-178C, an aviation software certification standard. A case study of applying the proposed checklist to the Model-based Development-based Helicopter Flight Control Computer (FCC) project currently used by domestic and foreign advanced companies and institutions was conducted.
