This present study describes an application of UV scanning spectrometer $O_4$ data for retrieval of aerosol vertical profiles in Seoul during the measurement period that includes two Asian dust event days. The results show large variations of aerosol load in vertical and temporal scales. Large variations in aerosol were observed at 1 km in height during the daytime in the measurement period when the Asian dust events took place. The aerosol load, however, was found to be largest at the surface compared to those retrieved at the higher atmospheric layers. The results also clearly identified the diurnal patterns of aerosol vertical distributions. The aerosol load was high in the morning and noon whereas it was low in the afternoon. This study demonstrates that UV scanning spectrometer observations of the oxygen dimer can serve as a potential method for determination of atmospheric aerosol vertical distributions and optical properties.
A machine-vision guided inspection system with go-no gauges for inspecting eggcrate assemblies in steam generators is considered. To locate the gauge at the right place, periodic corrective actions for its position and traveling direction are required. We present a machine vision algorithm for determining inserting position and traveling direction of the go-no gauge. The overall procedure of the algorithm is composed of camera calibration, eggcrate image preprocessing, grid-height adjustment, intersection point estimation between two intersecting grids, and adjustment of position and traveling direction of the gauge. The intersection point estimation is performed by using linear regression with a constraint. A test with a real eggcrate specimen shows the feasibility of the algorithm.
Bond between reinforcing bar and surrounding concrete is supposed to transfer load safely in the process of design of reinforced concrete structures. Bond failure of reinforcing bar generally take place by splitting of the concrete cover as bond force between concrete and reinforcing bars exceeds the confinement of the concrete cover and reinforcement. However, the confinement force has a limitation. Thus, the only variable is the bearing angle corresponding to the change of bond force. Higher rib height bars possessing higher shearing resistance can maintain higher bearing angle and higher splitting resistance when bars are highly confined, and consequently higher bond strength, than lower rib higher bars. In this study, from the evaluate bond strength of high Relative Rib Area Bars Using beam-end test specimens are compared with the current provisions for development of reinforcement, and the improved design method of bond strength is proposed.
In general a thermoelectric cooler (TEC) consists of a series of P type and N type thermoelectric materials sandwiched between two wafers. When a DC current passes through these materials, three different effects take place; Peltier effect, Joule heating effect and heat transfer by conduction due to temperature difference between hot and cold plates. In this study we have developed a micro TEC using $Bi_2Te_3$ (N type) and $Bi_{0.5}Sb_{1.5}Te_3$ (P type) thin films. In order to improve that performance of a micro TEC, we made 10 um height TE legs using special PR only for lift-off. We measured COP (coefficient of performance) and temperature difference between hot and cold connectors with current.
This paper proposes a low-cost method for counting people based on blob detection and blob tracking. Here background subtraction is used to detected blob and then the blob is classified with its width and height to specify that the blob is a person. In this system we first define the area of entry and exit point in the video frame. The counting of people starts when midpoint of the people blob crosses the defined point. Finally, total number of people entry and exit from the place is displayed. Experiment result of this proposed system has high accuracy in real-time performance.
The purpose of this study is to examine the growth potentiality of the Easy-Order System in the domestic male business suit market. This study is based on a questionnaire survey of males, who usually wear a business suit in the work place, and females whose husband wear a business suit. The pertinently answered 108 questionnaires (males: 72 and females: 36) were analyzed with SPSS 8.0. The results of this survey were as follows; 1. Gender, occupation, and height of consumers had a considerable effect on their on their intention of purchasing a preference of this system. 2. Subjects, who were dissatisfied with the limited option of purching a business suit in retail shops, had a significant intention of purchasing a business suit through the Easy-Order System. 3. It had no effect on consumers\\` preference and purching intention of the Easy-Order System whether or not they recognize this system. And the Easy-Order System is not estimated to have major repercussions over consumers by now.
The propagation of a macro-scale crack and the accompanying transformation zone around it was visualized in an Y-TZP ceramic using a mechano-luminescence (ML) technique. The technique allows realistic fractures that take place catastrophically in actual applications to be realistically stimulated. Unlike conventional quasi-static R-curves, the ML technique on a relatively fast time frame permitted a so-called quasi-dynamic R-curve in the crack speed range from 50 to 140 m/sec. to be measured. Effective toughening then commenced and the applied stress intensity factor increased to 27 $MPa{\sqrt{m}}$. The transformation zone height obtained from the ML observations was in good agreement with that predicted by the Marshall model, and coincided with previously observed results for quasi-static conditions by Raman spectorscopy and x-ray analysis.
The purpose of this study was to show the characteristics of phonetic contrasts of one-syllable words and speech intelligibility in hearing-impaired adults. Seven subjects with hearing-impaired participated in this experiment(2 males, 5 females). The test materials are 77 pairs of one-syllable words with phonetic contrasts. The results of this study were as follows: (1) The average score of intelligibility(scored accuracy) was the highest in contrasts of onset feature. (2) The scored percentages of error(except for combinations of contrasts) were the highest in articulatory manner contrasts of onset, tongue height contrasts of nucleus, and articulatory place contrasts of coda, respectively.
Three concrete filled steel tubular columns with six inner diaphrams are constructed and tested under field conditions. The size and shape of three columns are exactly same. The cross section is $40\times40cm$, and the height is 9m. Each column is constructed with normal concrete, CFST concrete, and high flowing concrete, respectively. Concrete is pumped into bottom parts of steel tubular columns from a concrete pump on the ground. Test data indicate that the slump flow of the concrete place in the top of the column is lower than that of the concrete before pumping by about 10~20cm. Slump flow loss of high flowing concrete caused by pumping is high compared to the other concretes. Concrete pump pressure of high flowing concrete is somewhat higher than that of CFST concrete.
The purpose of this work is to examine the voice onset times(VOTs) of the voiceless and voiced stops from the ten young male speakers of the Buckeye corpus[9]. The factors that are known to affect VOTs were also extracted, including the place of articulation, height of following vowels, location within word, presence of a preceding [s], status of the target word with respect to the content versus function word, presence of a syllabic stress, word frequency and speech rate. Findings from this work mostly agreed with those from earlier studies on English, but with some exceptions and new discoveries. We hope that this work can contribute to figuring out the nature and properties of the spontaneous speech of English.
