  • A high-resolution physical map targeting a cluster of yield-related QTLs on the long arm of rice chromosome 9 was constructed across a 35.5kb region containing the six predicted genes including the probable ascorbate peroxidase (OsApx). The $BC_3F_6$ near isogenic lines (NILs) were derived from a cross between the Oryza sativa Hwaseong and O. rufipogon. The plant height and length of internodes were compared between Hwaseong and NILs. There were significant differences in plant height between Hwaseong and NILs. The NILs internodes were longer than Hwaseong, showing dramatic elongation in the first and fourth internodes; thereby, leading to increased plant height. The antioxidant activity of Hwaseong and NILs was also analyzed by 3,3-diaminobenzidine (DAB) staining and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. In order to understand whether or not OsApx gene is important in scavenging $H_2O_2$ in rice, DAB staining was used. Intense dark-brown coloration was observed in Hwaseong than NILs. In addition, DPPH scavenging ability of Hwaseong showed lower value than NILs. These results indicated that the internode elongation and antioxidant activity might possibly be controlled by OsApx. To know the causative relationship of the gene and phenotype, we will further analyze the gene expression and use it for functional studies by complementation transgenic approach.

  • In this paper, we propose a method aiming at updating the building information of the digital maps using single high resolution satellite image and digital map. Firstly we produced a digital orthoimage through the automatic co-registration of QuickBird image and 1:1,000 digital map. Secondly we extracted building height information through the template matching of digital map's building vector data and the image's edges obtained by Canny operator. Finally we refined the shape of some buildings by using the result from template matching as the seed polygon of the greedy snake algorithm. In order to evaluate the proposed method's effectiveness, we estimated accuracy of the extracted building information using LiDAR DSM and 1:1,000 digital map. The evaluation results showed the proposed method has a good potential for extraction and revision of building information.

  • The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for the estimation of tree height is gaining recognition. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of tree height estimation of Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. and Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc. using digital surface model (DSM) generated from UAV-acquired imageries. Images were taken with the $Trimble^{(R)}$ UX5 equipped with Sony ${\alpha}5100$. The generated DSM, together with the digital elevation model (DEM) generated from a digital map of the study areas, were used in the estimation of tree height. Field measurements were conducted in order to generate a regression model and carry out accuracy assessment. The obtained coefficients of determination (R2) and root mean square error (RMSE) for P. densiflora (R2=0.71; RMSE=1.00 m) and P. koraiensis (R2=0.64; RMSE=0.85 m) are comparable to the results of similar studies. The results of the paired two-tailed t-test show that the two tree height estimation methods are not significantly different (p-value=0.04 and 0.10, alpha level=0.01), which means that tree height estimation using UAV imagery could be used as an alternative to field measurement.

  • Facility management system has been studied recently due to its increasing demand. As a starting step it is necessary to create 3-D shape of the facility. In this study, we attempted to create 3-D shape of the buildings by fusing the raster and vector information. the raster information comes from stereo aerial photographs and the vector information comes from the existing 2-D digital map. GPS surveying and data conversion using ACAD and ARCINFO also performed to extract building height from stereo aerial photographs. Finally we could be able to perform semi-automatic 3-D building modeling with fusion of two sources of information.

  • A risk analysis on the cutting slope of roads near Cheongju area was carried out with the data from geological map, field investigation, and laboratory test and with the Geographic Information System. A risk analysis method on the cutting slope of road using the Geographic Information System was developed with the data from geological map, field investigation and laboratory tests. In the GIS, road factors which are safety factor, class of road, slake index, slope-protection works, and height of slope in the cutting slopes are classified into some ranks, and their weighting factors were taken into account. This method can be applied effectively to a road management.

  • Current landscape management is focused towards managing uniformly, such as setting a limit on building's height and managing by putting first priority on building. For this reason, broader impact of landscape has not been studies thoroughly, and it was considered to be an important factor of not being able to operate diverse and active landscape management. Accordingly, the objective of this particular research to establish concrete and diverse device for managing landscape by adapting Map Algebra and Spatial Statistics, as one of the means of efficient landscape management, and applying the effectiveness of each landscape element in numerical value. Furthermore, this research was done in order to make a spatial estimation possible for resources to be located in compliance with each facility or landscape condition of individual region.

  • In this research,we suggest a virtual machining system that can simulate sutting forces at the stage of design. Cutting forces, here, are modeled form the machanistic model of the ball end milling. To this end, we need undeformed chip thickness which is used for calculating chip load. It is derived form the z-map data of a CAD model. That is, chip load is the height difference between the cutting tool contact point and the workpiece at arbitrary position. The tool contact point is referred from the cutter location. Form the experimental verification, we can simulate machining process effectively to the slot and the side cutting of ball end mill.

  • The meteorological events that cause most strong winds in Brazil are extra-tropical cyclones, downbursts and tornadoes. However, one hurricane formed off the coastline of southern Brazil in 2005, a tropical storm formed in 2010 and there are predictions that others may form again. Events such as those described in the paper and which have occurred before 1987, generate data for the wind map presented in the Brazilian wind loading code NBR-6123. This wind map presents the reference wind speeds based on 3-second gust wind speed at 10 m height in open terrain, with 50-year return period, varying from 30 m/s (north half of country) to 50 m/s (extreme south). There is not a separation of the type of climatological event which generated each registered velocity. Therefore, a thunderstorm (TS), an extra-tropical pressure system (EPS) or even a tropical cyclone (TC) are treated the same and its resulting velocities absorbed without differentiation. Since the flow fields generated by each type of meteorological event may be distinct, the indiscriminate combination of the highest wind velocities with aerodynamic coefficients from boundary layer wind tunnels may lead to erroneous loading in buildings.

  • This paper presents a new graphical method for selecting a pair of optical glass and housing materials to simultaneously achromatize and athermalize a multilens system composed of many elements. To take into account the lens spacing and housing, we quantify the lens power, chromatic power, and thermal power by weighting the ratio of the paraxial ray height at each lens to them. In addition, we introduce the equivalent single lens and the expanded athermal glass map including a housing material. Even though a lens system is composed of many elements, we can simply identify a pair of glass and housing materials that satisfies the athermal and achromatic conditions. Applying this method to design a black box camera lens equipped with a 1/4-inch image sensor having a pixel width of $2{\mu}m$, the chromatic and thermal defocusings are reduced to less than the depth of focus, over the specified ranges in temperature and frequency.

  • The run-up process of the 1983 Central East Sea Tsunami along the Eastern Coast is numerically investigated in this study. A finite difference numerical model based on the nonlinear shallow-water equations is employed. The maximum run-up height at Imwon is predicted and compared to field observation. A good agreement is observed. A maximum inundation map is made based on the maximum run-up heights to accentuate hazards of tsunami flooding.
