Estimating Design Hour Factor Using Permanent Survey (상시 교통량 자료를 이용한 설계시간계수 추정)

  • This study shows how to estimate the design hour factor when the counting stations don't have all of the hourly volumes such as in a coverage survey. A coverage survey records traffic volume from 1 to 5 times in a year so it lacks the detailed information to calculate the design hour factor. This study used the traffic volumes of permanent surveys to estimate the design hour factor in coverage surveys using correlation and regression analysis. A total 7 independent variables are used : the coefficient of variance of hourly volume, standard deviation of hourly volume, peak hour volume, AADT, heavy traffic volume proprotion, day time traffic volume proportion and D factor. All of variables are plotted on a curve, so it must use non-linear regression to analyze the data. As a result the coefficient of determination and MAE are good at logarith model using AADT.

Effect of Calcium Chloride and Sodium Chloride on the Leaching Behavior of Heavy Metals in Roadside Sediments (염화칼슘과 소금이 도로변 퇴적물의 중금속 용출에 미치는 영향)

  • Deicer operations provide traffic safety during winter driving conditions in urban areas. Using large quantities of de-icing chemicals (i.e., $CaCl_2$ and NaCl) can cause serious environmental problems and may change behaviors of heavy metals in roadside sediments, resulting in an increase in mobilization of heavy metals due to complexation of heavy metals with chloride ions. To examine effect of de-icing salt concentration on the leaching behaviors and mobility of heavy metals (cadmium, zinc, copper, lead, arsenic, nickel, chromium, cobalt, manganese, and iron), leaching experiments were conducted on roadside sediments collected from Seoul city using de-icing salt solutions having various concentrations (0.01-5.0M). Results indicate that zinc, copper, and manganese in roadside sediments were easily mobilized, whereas chromium and cobalt remain strongly fixed. The zinc, copper and manganese concentrations measured in the leaching experiments were relatively high. De-icing salts can cause a decrease in partitioning between adsorbed (or precipitated) and dissolved metals, resulting in an increase in concentrations of dissolved metals in salt laden snowmelt. As a result, run-off water quality can be degraded. The de-icing salt applied on the road surface also lead to infiltration and contamination of heavy metal to groundwater.

Development of a Mid-/Long-term Prediction Algorithm for Traffic Speed Under Foggy Weather Conditions (안개시 도시고속도로 통행속도 중장기 예측 알고리즘 개발)

  • The intelligent transportation systems allow us to have valuable opportunities for collecting wide-area coverage traffic data. The significant efforts have been made in many countries to provide the reliable traffic conditions information such as travel time. This study analyzes the impacts of the fog weather conditions on the traffic stream. Also, a strategy for predicting the long-term traffic speeds is developed under foggy weather conditions. The results show that the average of speed reductions are 2.92kph and 5.36kph under the slight and heavy fog respectively. The best prediction performance is achieved when the previous 45 pattern cases data is used, and the 14.11% of mean absolute percentage error(MAPE) is obtained. The outcomes of this study support the development of more reliable traffic information for providing advanced traffic information service.

  • The tollbooths of a main motorway toll plaza are usually operated proactively responding to the variations of traffic demands of two-type vehicles, i.e. cars and the other (heavy) vehicles, respectively. In this vein, it is one of key elements to forecast accurate traffic volumes for the two vehicle types in advanced tollgate operation. Unfortunately, it is not easy for existing univariate short-term prediction techniques to simultaneously generate the two-vehicle-type traffic demands in literature. These practical and academic backgrounds make it one of attractive research topics in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) forecasting area to forecast the future traffic volumes of the two-type vehicles at an acceptable level of accuracy. In order to address the shortcomings of univariate short-term prediction techniques, a Multiple In-and-Out (MIO) forecasting model to simultaneously generate the two-type traffic volumes is introduced in this article. The MIO model based on a non-parametric approach is devised under the on-line access conditions of large-scale historical data. In a feasible test with actual data, the proposed model outperformed Kalman filtering, one of a widely-used univariate models, in terms of prediction accuracy in spite of multivariate prediction scheme.

  • As a domestic traffic control signal system, either the system with which a traffic signal turns into green at regular intervals or the system with which an amber or a red signal flickers on local roads without heavy traffic at midnight has been utilized. However, when the former system is used for roads with light traffic at midnight, delays and congestion can be incurred. Besides, in case of the latter signal system, the risk of vehicle crash is high. This study proposes a response type of flickering green signal system that rearranges signal system after analyzing beacon messages including sensor data. The proposed system, on a trunk road or a branch road at midnight, makes the signal keep flickering in green; When a vehicle enters the range of RSE, the transfer coverage, it transmits beacon messages regularly and Agent System analyzes the messages and alters the signal. It is a system by which vehicles move following the altered signal system, which will not only ensure smooth flow but also prevent vehicles from crashing on a road with light traffic. As a result of a simulation, traffic throughput and the average waiting time displayed 10 to 30 percent better improvement than existing signal systems, in terms of performance.

  • We investigate the load sharing problem between the umbrella cell and the overlaid tells in hierarchical cell structure. A load sharing strategy is proposed and its performance is evaluated by simulation when it is used for transmission of the mobile Internet traffic using the High Speed Downlink Packet Access scheme. The results show that, with the proposed strategy, the microcell backs well the overlaid picocells up, especially when a specific picocell cluster suffers unusual heavy load condition. By using the strategy, we can reduce the installation cost, otherwise needed for increasing the system capacity of every picocell cluster to cope with the unusual heavy load.

  • To monitor the flood level under heavy rainfall and the scour at railroad bridge, the system, which can effectively collect, store and transmit the data, is developed and applied to the field. The results in this study are as follows. 1) Monitoring for water level and scour depth is well done in view of the recording velocity and the accuracy of data which are measured. 2) This system is based on the web, internet and it is able to collect the realtime data and to analyze the risk. 3) When water level excesses the limit of danger level of a river on which railroad bridge is located, or when scour depth and angle of inclination of pier is increased, the scenario for early warning signal which sends to managers at central traffic control and drivers of trains is automatically made. It is judged that this system secures the safety of railroad and protects lives of train passengers as the warning signal sends to running train in advance at risky situation of railroad bridge under heavy rainfall.

Effects of traffic-induced vibrations on bridge-mounted overhead sign structures

  • Large-amplitude vibration of overhead sign structures can cause unfavorable psychological responses in motorists, interfere with readability of the signs, and lead to fatigue cracking in the sign structures. Field experience in Texas suggests that an overhead sign structure can vibrate excessively when supported within the span of a highway bridge instead of at a bent. This study used finite element modeling to analyze the dynamic displacement response of three hypothetical sign structures subjected to truck-passage-induced vertical oscillations recorded for the girders from four actual bridges. The modeled sign bridge structures included several span lengths based on standard design practices in Texas and were mounted on precast concrete I-girder bridges. Results revealed that resonance with bridge girder vertical vibrations can amplify the dynamic displacement of sign structures, and a specific range of frequency ratios subject to undesirable amplification was identified. Based on these findings, it is suggested that this type of sign structure be located at a bridge bent if its vertical motion frequency is within the identified range of bridge structure excitation frequencies. Several alternatives are investigated for cases where this is not possible, including increasing sign structure stiffness, reducing sign mass, and installing mechanical dampers.

  • For maintaining railroad, accumulated passing tonnage is a determinant factor of appropriate rail replacement time. Recently, Seoul Metro's rail maintaining system and technology is being improved from previous years, which increasing a standard of rail replacement. Thus, this brings importance of estimating and managing for accumulated passing tonnage. In case of light weighted train such as subway, current method of calculating accumulated passing tonnage has defaults of misrepresenting accumulated passing tonnage data. Because current method is based on the weight of passengers and train., and operation data. In addition, currently there is no mechanical and electronic system that could represent and support the accurate data between heavy and non-heavy traffic area, and accumulated passing tonnage is calculated inaccurately by estimating average value each line. The current method of calculating accumulated passing tonnage misleads to unpredictable data that represent inappropriate rail replacement period, which leads to under or over analyzed replacement period. If accumulated passing tonnage is over estimated, rail replacement leads to waste of budget. Hence, it is necessary to construct reliable actual measurement system to manage rail's life safely and efficiently, and in this study the accumulated passing tonnage measurement device is installed with using rail pad of optical fiber sensors and its effect is analyzed.

Analysis of Strengthening Structures of Steel Manhole Cover (강재 맨홀뚜껑의 보강구조 해석)

  • Manhole cover, which is usually made of grey cast iron and consists of frame and cover, should have enough strength to support the heavy traffic load. The manhole cover made of cast iron has heavy weight to handle manually and is vulnerable to impact force with its brittle characteristics. Moreover, its production process of casting has been regulated in terms of environmental pollution. In this study, steel manhole cover is proposed to substitute the cast cover with a series of structural analyses to confirm its strength to support the test load for manhole cover. The cover of the proposed steel manhole cover is made of thin circular pate and stiffeners below the plate. Rectangular columns and hollow circular plate were selected for the shape of the stiffener. In order to give enough strength for the cover to behave within elastic range in the loading, strengthening structures of the cover were varied with increasing the number and the size of the stiffeners. The results of the analyses revealed that when both the hollow circular stiffener and cross stiffeners were additionally applied at the same time to the steel cover with longitudinal stiffeners, the maximum stress level in the cover could be reduced to that level presented in the cast cover.
