  • Effects of coolant pre-cooling and fuel pre-heating on the performance of a combined cycle using a F-class gas turbine were investigated. Coolant pre-cooling results in an increase of power output but a decrease in efficiency. Performance variation due to the fuel pre-heating depends on the location of the heat source for the pre-heating in the bottoming cycle (heat recovery steam generator). It was demonstrated that a careful selection of the heat source location would enhance efficiency with a minimal power penalty. The effect of combining the coolant pre-cooling and fuel pre-heating was also investigated. It was found that a favorable combination would yield power augmentation, while efficiency remains close to the reference value.

  • Poor fuel vaporization in gasoline engines causes the problem of HC emission during the cold start and warm-up period. This paper presents a strategy to improve fuel atomization during the warm-up phase. In this experiment, the heated fuel-rail system is constructed to investigate the effects of fuel heating on the average size of fuel droplets. The fuel atomization effects are examined by measuring Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) of the fuel droplets from the three different types (two-hole, pintle, and six-hole) of injectors based upon a returnless heated fuel-rail system. The results show that the six-hole type injector is the most sensitive to fuel heating in terms of SMD among three different types of injectors.

  • The oxy-fuel combustion heating characteristics is investigated experimentally by measuring furnace and steel temperature variations for batch type furnace simulator with a specially designed low NOx oxy-fuel burner. Economics of using oxy-fuel combustion is confirmed and, the furnace and steel temperature variations for different heating conditions are compared to deduce optimal heating control pattern for energy savings and rapid uniform heating. High $CO_2$ concentration (> 80-90%), low NOx (< 40ppm) and CO (< 10ppm) are measured in the flue gas. Temperature differences (< $30^{circ}C$) inside the furnace and steel are reduced relatively by increasing the burner jet momentum.

  • To replace waste oil with the lowest grade which has high viscosity into heating fuel, light oil and buncker C oil in waste oil was used and the fuel characteristic was analyzed by its concentration after mixing oil. The mixture conditions were controlled by the reaction time (30 s~30 min) and kept by the reaction temperature ($75{\pm}5^{\circ}C$) when mixing speed was stirred at 3400~3600 rpm. We used the buncker C oil and light oil to decrease viscosity of waste oil and the dynamic viscosity was decreased by 81~96%. Optimum mixing ratio (waste oil : buncker C oil : light oil) as heating fuel was 1 : 1 : 1. Flash point, dynamic viscosity and heating value of this case were identified $78^{\circ}C$, $20.02mm^{2}/s$, 9158 kcal/L respectively.

  • In the present study, the simulation on the annual performance evaluation of a renewable energy systems with fuel cell driven compound source hybrid heat pump systems is applied to the heating and cooling of large community building. The large community building has the economical advantage to apply heat pump cooling and heating systems the long period operation. If air and ground source hybrid heat pump systems are combined, COP of the system can be increased largely. Fuel cell driven compound source hybrid heat pump system can reduced the fuel cost as well as thermal storage tank sharply.

  • The control of microstructure is critical for the porous fuel particles used for infiltrating actinide nuclides. This study concerns the effect of heating processes on properties and microstructure of the fuel particles. The uniform gel precursor beads were synthesized by a microfluidic sol-gel process and then the porous $CeO_2$ microspheres, as a surrogate for the ceramic nuclear fuel particles, were obtained by heating treatment of the gel precursors. The fabricated $CeO_2$ microspheres have a narrow size distribution and good sphericity due to the feature of microfluidics. The effects of heating processes parameters, such as heating mode and peak temperatures on the properties of microspheres were studied in detail. An optimized heating mode and the peak temperature of $650^{\circ}C$ were selected to produce porous $CeO_2$ microspheres. The optimized heating mode can avoid the appearance of broken or crack microspheres in the heating process, and as-prepared porous microspheres were of suitable pore size distribution and pore volume for loading minor actinide (MA) solution by an infiltration method that is used for fabrication of MA-bearing nuclear fuel beads. After the infiltration process, $1000^{\circ}C$ was selected as the final temperature to improve the compressive strength of microspheres.

  • This paper describes the fuel oil characteristics of mulching waste vinyl by indirect heating emulsion system. For the emulsion experiment of waste vinyl, the system is composed of melting furnace, the 1th pyrolysis furnace, and the 2nd pyrolysis furnace. The mulching waste vinyl is used for the fuel oil characteristics analysis of mulching waste vinyl. The refined oil, gasoline, and diesel oil are extracted and quantified to analysis the fuel oil characteristics. From the results of experiments, it has been shown that the production of fuel oil from mulching waste vinyl is possible using the emulsion system.

  • The system considered in this model consists of a single, semi- transparent, diesel fuel droplet, which is immobile in the heating area and surrounded by a quiescent air. A uniform external radiation field surrounds the droplet. Results from mathematical simulation suggest that because of the higher surface temperature, the external radiative heating of the droplet can promote an earlier ignition of the fuel vapour/air mixture. The radiative heating of the droplet increases the mass transfer from the droplet to the surrounding gas-phase, thus, decreasing the heterogeneity of the fuel droplet/air system.

  • PEM fuel cell produces electric power, water and heat by the electrochemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen. The heating value is dependent on the molar enthalpy of vaporization of product water and the performance loss. In this paper, the heating value of fuel cell stack has been studied under various stack operating temperatures to achieve more efficient heat management. A technology using the molar enthalpy of vaporization of product water is suggested to reduce heat-up time during start-up of a fuel cell vehicle.

  • The fuel tank of a ship is filled with heavy fuel oil (HFO) that has a very high viscosity. In order to inject the HFO into the engine easily, heating coils are usually installed inside the fuel tank to heat the HFO and lower its viscosity. Currently, several different types of heating coils are used, e.g., fin-type, bare-type, drum-type, and shell-and-tube-type. It is well known that the shell-and-tube-type heating coil has good performance and high efficiency. In this study, experiments were conducted to determine the heat transfer efficiencies of three different shell-and-tube-type heating coils. Heat transfer efficiency was evaluated by using FLUENT 6.3.26 software. Also, structural safety was assessed by using ANSYS.simulation software.
