  • Actual states of energy utilizations were investigated and analyzed on three representative rural villages in Chungcheongnam-Do. Rural residents were almost using the ondol boiler as a heating facility and oil(diesel, kerosene) and electricity(night thermal-storage power service) as a heating energy. There were a few households using briquette or firewood in a fuel hole with Korean hypocaust. Most of their cooking facilities were gas ranges using LPG. The most popular hot-water supply system was an oil boiler and the next was an electricity boiler. The amount of energy use in a rural household generally showed 20,000 to 40,000 won/month of the electric power rate, 400 to 800 liter/year of the oil and 60 to 120 kg/year of the LPG. Prompt measures should be taken to promote the spread of new and renewable energy such as solar heat, biomass and wind power, etc.

  • Flue gas from apartment heating gas boiler is exhausted outside through an exhaust duct mounted horizontally in a vertical row on the wall. The flue gas includes nitrogen-oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide. To investigate the possible entrainment of the flue gas into the apartments through the windows, a large eddy simulation (LES) based numerical method is utilized. Distribution of the velocity intensity and temperature around the exhaust ducts is presented for three numerical parameters: exhaust velocity, temperature of the flue gas, and exhaust duct length. The flow field visualized with particles inserted at the ends of the ducts is also presented. The results clearly show that the exhausted flue gas may flow into the apartments when the windows are open.

  • In this study, develop the thermal pump using water evaporation and condensation. Vapor from heating room moves up to pumping room and press the water of pumping room. Consequently water is pumped out to water tank. Then hot vapor direct contact with cold water in condensing room after pumping process. At this time, pressure of condensing room is down to-5kPa and suck in water of tank. This pump executes self ping and good durability because of no mechanical moving parts. Thermal pump is pumped cyclic so that, this pump is not used single. Therefore thermal pump of hot water boiler used to multi-stage for stable pumping rate. As the result of performance test, the developed thermal pump proves pumping action of water evaporation/condensation. And total volume flow rate is 500liter during one hour. If three thermal pump is installed parallel, this pump can use to the hot water boiler in the 300,000kcal/h class.

  • The experimental design methodology was applied in the real scale coal-fired boiler to predict the various combustion properties according to the operating conditions and to assess the coal plant safety. Response surface method (RSM) was introduced as a design of experiment, and the database for RSM was provided with the numerical simulation of the coal-fired boiler. The three independent variables, high heating value of coal (HHV), overall stoichiometry excess air ratio (OST), and burner-side stoichiometry excess air ratio (BST), were set to characterize the cross section averaged NOx concentration and temperature distribution. The maximum NOx concentration was predicted accurately and mainly controlled by BST in the boiler. The parabola function was assumed for the zone averaged peak temperature distribution, and the prediction was in a fairly good agreement with the experiments except downstream. Also, the location of the peak temperature was compared with that of maximum NOx, which implies that thermal NOx formation is the main mechanism in the coal-fired boiler. These results promise the wide use of statistical models for the fast prediction and safety assessment.

  • Wood pellet is one of biomass energy fuels, which is produced by compressing woody biomass such as sawdust, planer shavings, and whole-tree removal or tree tops and branches leftover after logging into cylindrical form. Latterly much attention has been paid to wood pellet boiler which is suitable for use at various scales in domestic and industrial furnaces for heat production to replace conventional fossil fuel energy sources since the use of wood pellet that is carbon neutral can alleviate global warming. This study presents the result of developing a high efficiency wood pellet boiler with 55MJ/h capacity. Efficiency has been improved by using a rotating disk burner with a shorter screw feeder. Special attention has been paid to the improvement of the safety of the wood pellet boiler from backfire by adopting a double protecting system composed of a shutter and an air curtain. The result shows that the efficiencies of the wood pellet boiler are 97.2% and 89.2% based on lower and higher heating values, respectively, at 15.1kW of heating output.

  • A study was conducted to significantly increase the heat transfer area by simultaneously burying the excel pipe in the floor and wall of a container house, thereby greatly reducing the initial heating time. In addition, a small hot water boiler suitable for the heating load of a small container house with a maximum area of 6 m2 was studied. A wall-mounted hot water boiler was developed as a result of the study. When a hot water boiler is installed outdoors for heating, heat radiation energy is lost in winter from the hot water boiler and hot water pipe due to the low temperature. We propose an approach through which the energy loss was greatly reduced and the temperature of hot water increased in proportion to the operating time. Moreover, as the mass flow rate of the hot water flowing inside the excel pipe increased, the temperature of the hot water decreased. The temperature of the wall and floor surfaces of the container house increased in proportion to the increase in the mass flow rate of hot water flowing inside the excel tube. Natural convection heat transfer was realized from the wall and floor surfaces of the container house, and the heat transfer area was increased by a factor of 3 with respect to heat transfer area limited to the floor by the existing hot water panel. As a result, the initial temperature increase rate was much higher because of the larger heat transfer area.

  • The resonance of boiler is caused by exciting force in the gas path and it generates the vibration by the harmony of boiler's dimensional factor. According to trending toward the boiler of increasing capacity and a bigger size, it has a problem of the vibration at back-pass heating surfaces. We can predict such vibrations as comparison between vortex frequency and gas column's natural frequency. We can't rely on the method for the past decades because of changing parameters, such as an allowable error, gas temperature, gas velocity, Strouhal number. We can reduce the vibration to use the seasoning effect and change the operating condition in coal fired boiler but it's not essential solution. When the vibration occurred in the model boiler, we must measures the acoustic pressure and frequency of places for considering the means. So far, we confirmed the problem from field measures and theoretical analysis about the acoustic vibration of boiler. We installed anti-acoustic baffle in a existing boiler to change the acoustic natural frequency at the cavity, which results in reducing the acoustic vibration. The first, we prove that the acoustic resonance is caused by harmonizing vortex shedding frequency of tube heat surface with acoustic natural frequency of cavity in the range of 650~750 MW loads. The second, the acoustic resonance at the back-pass heating surface has the third order of acoustic natural frequency at the second economizer. We install five anti-acoustic baffles at the second economizer to reducing the resonance. We confirm considerably reducing the acoustic vibration of boiler during the commercial boiler.

  • This study was aimed at the heating tank with a screw-rotation device for improving the thermal efficiency of electric boiler. In the proposed system, analysis items were the heater rod surface temperature variation, reaching time for set temperature and thermal efficiency. The following conclusions are obtained from this experimental study. (1) When screw speed increases, the time reaching for set temperature tended to be shorter. (2) When the rotation speed becomes 300 rpm, the surface temperature difference between the right and left heater rod decreases by 49%, from $19.7^{\circ}C$ to $9.7^{\circ}C$ in average. (3) When the rotation speed is over 250 rpm, proposed heating tank structure appeared to be effective in terms of thermal efficiency. Thermal efficiency with the rotation speed 300 rpm is improved by 3.8% compared to the case of rotation speed 0 rpm.

  • Condensing gas boiler units may make a big role for the reduction of energy consumption in heating industries. In order to decrease the energy consumption of a condensing gas boiler unit, the effective operations and controls of the system are necessary. In this study, mathematical models of a condensing gas boiler system were developed and programmed in order to predict dynamic behaviors of the system. These include dynamic models for a blower, a gas valve, a pump, a burner, a boiler heat exchanger, and a hot water heat exchanger. Control algorithms for the control of a gas valve, a blower, and a pump were also assumed. Simulation results showed good predictions of the dynamic phenomena of a boiler system. Therefore, the simulation program developed for this study may be effectively used for the development of control algorithms of the boiler system.
