  • Objectives : The purpose and application method of the five kinds of Gagamjeong-gisan in the Onbyeongjobyeon were analyzed and their significance was examined. Methods : First, contents within medical texts on the Gwakhyangjeong-gisan, the original formula for the Gagamjeong-gisan were analyzed. Next, application, symptoms and pathogenic mechanism, treatment principle, composition of the Gagamjeong-gisan as written in the Onbyeongjobyeon were analyzed. Characteristics of each formula as deduced from this process were compared and examined. Results : The Gwakhyangjeong-gisan covers both external contraction and internal damage, applied regardless of external or internal symptoms. It restores the Yang qi of the Spleen and Stomach, balancing the Zheng qi to respond to the external qi. The Gagamjeong-gisan takes after the Gwakhyangjeong-gisan, reflecting such properties. However, the latter differs in that it excludes ingredients unfit for treating dampness-warmth, and uses different application methods according to the level of discharge of dampness pathogen. Conclusions : The Gagamjeong-gisan is modified from the Gwakhyangjeong-gisan, which is applied to cold damage and internal damage to better treat warm disease. It can be said to have acted as a bridge for warm disease scholars in composing formulas that deal with dampness-heat disease.

  • The problems with unsorted municipal waste are always associated with disposal issues as it requires a large area for landfilling or high energy used for incineration. In recent years, an autoclaving technique has been considered a promising approach which could minimize the volume of organic waste from being directly disposed or incinerated. In this work, an attempt was done to study the saccharification potential of organic residues under elevated temperature Thermal treatment involving hot water bath was applied to treat the organic residue ranging from 60℃ to 100℃ for 30 and 60 minutes. The result obtained showed an increasing trend for the concentration of glucose and carbohydrate. However, the result for lignocellulose content which contains various component includes extractive, holocellulose, hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin show variation. Based on the thermal treatment carried out, the result indicated that the trend of glucose and carbohydrate content. The highest percentage of glucose that can be obtained 978.602 ㎍/ml which could be obtained at 90℃ at 60 minutes. The carbohydrate also shows an increasing trend with 0.234 mg/ml as the highest peak achieved at 80℃ for 30 minutes treatment. However, it was found that the lignocellulose content varies with temperature and time. The statistical analysis was carried out using two-ways ANOVA shows an interaction effect between the independent variables (temperature and contact time) and the saccharification effects on the food wastes. The result shows a variation in the significant effect of independent variables on the changes in the composition of food waste.

  • Objective : Methods of Jang Cong-zheng's treatment related to his theories include of promoting the sweating-vomiting-purgation(汗吐下三法), prickling-bleeding method(瀉血療法), and emotional therapy(情志療法). He succeeded Liu wan-su(劉完素) as promoter of fire-heat pattern theory(火熱論), thereby emphasizing six qi(六氣), especially fire(火) and dampness(濕), as pathogens. He suggested that physician should treat patients whose diseases occurred due to fire(火) and dampness(濕) with promoting the sweating(汗)-vomiting(吐)-purgation(下) methods, which would remove pathogen qi(邪氣) and help circulation of qi and blood, therefore getting them back healthy qi(正氣). Method : I will try to describe the Jang Cong-zheng's treatment in "Ru-Men-Shi-Qin", and I would like to explain the sweating-vomiting-purgation(汗吐下三法), prickling-bleeding method(瀉血療法), and emotional therapy(情志療法). Result : For emotional diseases, he suggested that most should be caused by heart fire(心火) so they should be treated with methods of suppressing heart fire and medication would be using cool and cold herbal drugs which lead to clear heart fire. Conclusion : Theories of Zhang zi-he(張子和) can be applied to nurturing for modern world maintaining and improving health by his care methods. People these days suffer usually from excess intake or unbalanced diet problem, so wastes matter and pathogenic qi can be driven out of the human body by applying the sweating-vomiting-purgation methods. His medical theories could contribute to modernization of traditional medicine this way.

  • Pt/C powder which was used as electrocatalyst in a Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell(PAFC) was fabricated by colloid method. It was reported that the sulfur from reductant, $Na_2S_2O_4$, worked as a poison against catalyst during long term operation. To remove these sulfurs, we try to treat Pt/C powder by three different methods. First, we tried to remove the sulfur according to temperature and time in $H_2$ atmosphere. As the heat treatment temperature is raised up, the effect of the removal is increased but the electrode performance is decreased because of the growth of Pt particle size. The optimal heat treatment temperature is $400^{\circ}C$, the size of Pt particle is approximately $35{\sim}40{\AA}$ and the electrode performance is $360mA/cm^2$ at 0.7 V. At $400^{\circ}C$, even though the time of heat treatment is extended, size of Pt, amounts of remaining sulfur and electrode performance is almost constant. Secondly, when we removed in a crucible at $900^{\circ}C$ the removal of the sulfur was not better, but the size of Pt particle, approximately $80{\AA}$, was smaller than that of heat treatment in $H_2$ atmosphere at $900^{\circ}C$. Lastly we treated with solvents such as acetone, benzene, and carbon disulfide. It was observed that sulfur components were removed partly by extraction with solvents, the electrode performances were similar each other.

  • The methods of checking the exuberance of yang (潛陽法) are a kind of medical treatments which cure various symtoms caused by hyperactivity of liver-yang, at the same time used for treating apoplexy. Thus, I investigated the application of checking the exuberance of yang to treat stroke. The conclusions are as follows. We can find application of checking the exuberance of yang to apoplexy on Synopsis of the Gold Chamber. After Ye Gui who persisted the theory of endogenous wind, many physicians applied the method of checking the exuberance of yang and this method has usually applied with nourishing yin. The methods of checking the exuberance of yang are concretely applied as follows. 1) a portion of apoplexy involving the channels and collaterals, which is caused by deficiency of yin and wind-fire pathogen. 2) excessive-syndrome of coma accompanied by heat syndrome. 3) epilepsy caused old apoplexy. The majority of shells for example abalone shell, hawksbill shell, oyster shell, tortoise-shell etc. are the most frequent use of herbal drug which check the exuberance of yang. The precriptions of checking the exuberance of yang are Ho-jam-hwan(虎潛丸), Ko-bon-dan(固本丹), Cheon-ma-gu-deung-eum(天麻鉤藤飮), Chin-gan-sik-pung-tang(鎭肝熄風湯) etc.

  • Sauna, or hanjeung (汗蒸) is a physical sweating method that uses external heat to forcibly raise body temperature to treat cold damage disorders (傷寒) in traditional Korean medicine. This study focuses on the fact that the sauna was recorded as a healing and bathing method on the Vinaya Pitaka (律藏), and investigates the records of folk sauna therapy of Joseon Dynasty from the perspective of Buddhist medicine which played a significant role in ancient medicine history in Korea. Although the word 'hanjeung (汗蒸)' first appeared in "The Veritable Records of King Sejong (世宗實錄)" in the Korean literature, this study aims to confirm the possibility that the tradition of Buddhist sauna bathing has already existed since the Three Kingdoms period in Korea, based on the fact that sauna bathing was recorded in the Vinaya Pitaka and that the ancient Buddhist bathing culture was introduced in ancient Japan. In addition, the succession of the Buddhist sauna tradition by Goryeo will be traced back through the records of 1920s urban saunas in Gaesung (개성) which was the old capital of Goryeo and had a strong tendency to adhere to traditional Goryeo customs. Finally, the study tries to identify the elements of the Buddhist sauna bathing on the records of folk sauna therapy in the Joseon Dynasty. As a result, this study examines how the Buddhist sauna bathing culture in ancient Korea, which was led by medical monks, spread in the general public and influenced the folk sauna therapy in the Joseon Dynasty.

  • The researches for tumor and the developments for new anti-tumor medicine are being continuously developed in the oriental as well as the west. The principles therapy of anti-tumor activity was based on knowledge of the method of support the healthy energy and strengthen the body resistance, promote blood circulation to remove blood stasis, clear away heat and toxic materials, dissipate phlegm and disperse the accumulation of evils. But the major clinical features of tumor was to be considered in developing a treatment plan include (1) distinguish between clinical and pathologic staging - acute and chronic, (2) classification of pathologic pattern, and (3) distinction of body situation : for examples asthenia - sthenia etc. It was most important to distinguish between supporting the healthy and eliminating the evil factors and to treat differently at the root and the branch cause of a neoplasm. In clinical study and experimental study, the effects of oriental medicine could be summarized as three that were decreasing toxicity of chemo-therapy, directly suppressing and killing cancerous cell and increasing chemo-effect through preventing metastasis. Improving organic immunity with oriental medicine could be summarized as five that were promoting phagocytosis of macrophage, inducing interferon, promoting formation of immnoglobulin, increasing number of T-cell and promoting transformation of lymphocyte. It is suggested that effective use of immune activating herbs inhibited metastasis and decreased recurrence and then we were able to expect increasing survival rate and improving clinical symptoms and quality of life(QOL) of tumor patients.

  • Objectives : Samhwangsashim-tang(SHSST), a mixture of Rhei radix et rhizoma, Scutellariae radix, and Coptidis rhizoma, has been regarded as being able to treat bleeding, gastric discomfort, dry mouth, insomnia and purpura due to Blood Heat. Currently, this herbal formula is applied to gastritis, gastric ulcer, hypertension, atherosclerosis or other types of vascular inflammatory disorders. Methods : We extracted this herbal mixture with 30% ethanol and examined for its effects on systemic inflammatory responses and in vitro macrophage activity. Mice were orally given to SHSST for 7 days and then lipopolysaccharide(LPS) was intraperitoneally injected. Tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$(TNF-${\alpha}$) levels in serum were measured 1 h after LPS challenge. Peritoneal macrophages were isolated from thioglycollate-injected mice and used for in vitro cellular activity. Cell death was measured using the MTT method and annexin V/propidium iodide staining. LPS-stimulated signaling molecules necessary for TNF-${\alpha}$ expression were determined by Western blotting. Results : Oral administration of SHSST for 7 days resulted in a significant reduction in LPS-stimulated TNF-${\alpha}$ release into serum. In vitro treatment of SHSST was cytotoxic in a concentration-dependent manner. However, SHSST caused a concentration-dependent reduction in necrosis and increase in apoptosis in mouse peritoneal macrophages. SHSST inhibited the activation of NF-${\kappa}B$, p38 and JNK signaling molecules in response to LPS. Conclusion : Taken together, our results demonstrated that SHSST was effective in lowering LPS-stimulated TNF-${\alpha}$ serum levels, possibly through its modulation of NF-${\kappa}B$, p38 and JNK in macrophages.
