  • Entrainment in thermosyphons and heat pipes was characterized in view of the interfacial stability associated with the critical Weber number and the entrainment limit at the onset of liquid entrainment from the liquid or wicked interface. Both literature review and theoretical analysis on the entrainment models were peformed in order to evaluate accuracy of the predicted value. For this purpose, the models were categorized in two groups according to their entrainment mechanism and interfacial configurations, i.e., the wave-induced entrainment and the shear-induced entrainment, respectively. Thus, the twelve models(five models for the wave-induced entrainment and seven for the shear induced entrainment) were examined to obtain individual trends and their discrepancies from the general tendency of the overall models. As a result, the critical Weber numbers and entrainment limits were calculated and represented as a function of vapor temperature for the chosen characteristic dimensions of the interface.

  • The methods for adjusting the output voltage as well as the heater temperature of a single-phase inverter for the heat treatment are proposed. The output voltage of the single-phase inverter is limited to 60 V for safety. The time constant of heater temperature is much higher than that of the output voltage. The stability may be deteriorated due to such large time constant difference. In order to ensure the stability, a hysteresis on/off control method for the heater temperature control is used. The performances for the proposed methods are verified with the experiments.

  • Combustion instability is a major issue in design of gas turbine combustors for efficient operation with low emissions. Combustion instability is induced by the interaction of the unsteady heat release of the combustion process and the change in the acoustic pressure in the combustion chamber. In an effort to develop a technique to predict self-excited combustion instability of gas turbine combustors, a new stability analysis method based on the transfer matrix method is developed. The method views the combustion system as a one-dimensional acoustic system with a side branch and describes the heat source as the input to the system. This approach makes it possible to use the advantages of not only the transfer matrix method but also well-established classic control theories. The approach is applied to a simple gas turbine combustion system to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the approach.

  • Some physical and physiological properties of di-D-fructofuranose dianhydrideIII (DFAIII), as a new sweetener, were investigated via in vitro experiments. The disaccharide was prepared by decomposing inulin with inulin fructotransferase (depolymerizing) from Arthrobacter sp. A-6. DFAIII had more excellent heat and acid stability than sucrose. This was one of the most desirable properties especially for the oligomer types of sweetener. DFAIII showed the least pH drop in the Streptococcus mutans culture, compared with the other saccharides examined. This indicates that the sugar will be fairly effective for preventing dental caries. The saccharide also had a selective Bifidus growth-promoting effect in PYF medium. Whereas, E. coli did not show growth promotion in the DFAIII-containing medium. In the co-culture of Bifidus longum and E. coli in the BL medium, Bifidus longum had a selective growth while the growth of E. coli appeared rather to be inhibited.

  • Thermal design is required with considering thermal stability to verify the reliability of electric power device with using IGBT. Numerical analysis is performed to analyzed the change in thermal resistance with respect to the various thermal density of heating element. Correlations between thermal resistance and heat generation density are established. With using these correlations, performance curve is composed with respect to the change in thermal resistance of cooling conditions for natural convection and forced convection. Thermal fatigue is occurred at the Inside and outside of IGBT by repeated heat load. The crack is occurred between base plate and ceramic substrate for the inside. When the crack length is 4mm, the failure is occurred. Therefore, Thermal design method considering thermal density, thermal fatigue resistance is presented on this study and it is expected to thermal design with considering life prediction.

  • ER clutch is a device using ER fluid, so called "intelligent material" and is a controlled system with electric field strength. Currently, the temperature of ER fluid increases and affects the performance of ER clutch when ER clutch is operating. This study was undertaken to estimate this performance variation due to temperature rise of ER fluid. An analytic heat transfer model of concentric cylinder type ER clutch was developed and with this model, effects of changing geometric, kinetic parameters of ER clutch and ER fluid properties were described. In conclusion, compared with neglecting thermal effects, a performance of ER clutch was very differential and for uniform performance of ER clutch, we have to improve thermal stability of ER fluid. • Researchers have applied theoretical and CFD models for years to analyze the fluidelastic instability (FEI) of tube arrays in steam generators and other heat exchangers. The accuracy of each approach has typically been evaluated using the discrepancy between the experimental critical flow velocity and the predicted value. In the best cases, the predicted critical flow velocity was within an order of magnitude comparable to the measured one. This paper revisits the quasi-steady approach for damping controlled FEI in a normal triangular array with a pitch ratio of P/d = 1.375. The method addresses the fluidelastic frequency at the stability threshold as an input parameter for the approach. The excellent agreement between the estimated stability thresholds and the equivalent experimental results suggests that the fluidelastic frequency must be included in the quasi-steady analysis, which requires minimal computing time and experimental data. In addition, the model allows a simple time delay analysis regarding flow convective and viscous effects.

  • In this study, a non-equiatomic high entropy alloy was fabricated using the spark plasma sintering method, and its microstructural features and mechanical properties were investigated. The chemical composition of FeMnCoCr was determined by using the entropy calculation related to the design of high entropy alloys. A bulk sample with the same composition was also prepared using the conventional metallurgical processes of casting and hot rolling. The microstructures of the samples fabricated by these different processes were compared by microscope observation, and a quantitative phase analysis was carried out using FE-SEM. Hardness measurement was used to evaluate mechanical properties. Particular attention was paid to microstructural changes due to heat treatment, which was analyzed by considering how austenite stability is affected by grain refinement.

  • This study examined the combustion and thermal characteristics of imported woods for building materials in Korea. Wooden specimens were confirmed by a cone calorimeter according to the KS F ISO 5660-1 standard. The combustion properties of the wooden specimens were measured in terms of the heat release rate (HRR), total heat released (THR), mass lose rate (MLR), and ignition time (time to ignition; TTI). The optical microscope was used for determine the anatomical characteristics of wood pit and structure. Also, the thermal properties were measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to determine the thermal stability of wooden specimens. The result of this experiment would be useful for fundamentals of guiding the combustion properties and thermal stability using wood application.

  • Rock slopes along the road or railroad are affected by temperature and therefore experienced iterative freezing-thawing process between winter and early spring. The purpose of this study is to analyze the stability of rock slopes which are influenced by the deterioration due to the freezing-thawing. The analysis is the homogenization method which evaluates the strength property of discontinuous rock mass, and as a strength failure criterion, Drucker-Prager failure criterion is used. The deterioration property of real rock is obtained by a freezing-thawing laboratory test of tuff and this property of deterioration is quantitated and used as a basic data of stability analysis for rock mass. To evaluate the deterioration depth due to the freezing-thawing in situ rock slope, one dimensional heat conductivity equation is used and as the result I can find that the depth of which is affected by a temperature. After the freezing-thawing depth of model slope is determined, we analyze the pattern of rock mass stength value of rock slope model which excesses the limit of self-load.
