  • Physical metallurgy aspects of gaseous ferritic nitrocarburising are reviewed in the light of basic studies undertaken since 1975 which have illustrated inconsistencies between the iron-carbon-nitrogen ternary phase diagram at $570^{\circ}C$ and the experimental observation of the co-existence of the ${\varepsilon}$ carbonitride phase and ferrite. Thermodynamic investigations by Xu and Li together with those by Slycke et al are reviewed to illustrate compatability between a modified isothermal section of the Fe-C-N system and the formation and growth of a monophased ${\varepsilon}$ structure under a variety of processing conditions. The implications of the modified diagram in terms of innovations in industrial ferritic nitrocarburising practice are discussed, together with limitations on the control of the process. The importance of the developing technology of black nitrocarburising for enhanced wear, fatigue, and corrosion resistance is emphasised. Basic studies and industrial status of austenitic nitrocarburising treatments are also reviewed, which highlight the importance of substrate strengthening for high load bearing applications of anti-scuff thermochemical treatments.

  • In the present study, the fluorescence behavior ova phenylethynyl-terminated imide (LaRC PETI-5) resin, a bismaleimide (BMI) resin, and various LaRC PETI-5/BMI blends with different blend compositions has been characterized as a function of heat-treatment temperature, using a steady-state fluorescence technique with a front-face illumination method far solid-state films. It is observed that there are distinguishable changes in the spectral shape, size, and position of fluorescence with varying heat-treatment temperature in the pure and blend samples. The result is qualitatively explained in terms of charge transfer complex formation as well as microenvironmental change with local mobility and viscosity occurring in the LaRC PETI-5, BMI, and their blends during the cure process. The result also implies that a steady-state fluorescence technique may be a useful tool to understand the processing conditions of polyimides and their blends in the film form on the basis of their thermo-photophysical responses.

  • The development of Fe-based metal matrix composites (MMCs) with high content of hard phase has been approached by combining the use of advanced powder metallurgy techniques like high-energy milling (HEM), cold isostatic pressing (CIP) and vacuum sinterings. A 30% vol. of NbC particles was mixed with Fe powder by HEM in a planetary mill during 10h, characteristing the powder by the observation of morphology and microstructure by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After of sintering process the variation of density, hardness, carbon content and the microstructural changes observed, permits to find the optimal conditions of processing. Afterwards, a heat treatment study was performed to study the hardenability of the composite.

  • To predict mechanical properties of secondary hardening martensitic steels, a machine learning ensemble model was established. Based on ANN(Artificial Neural Network) architecture, some kinds of methods was considered to optimize the model. In particular, interaction features, which can reflect interactions between chemical compositions and processing conditions of real alloy system, was considered by means of feature engineering, and then K-Fold cross validation coupled with bagging ensemble were investigated to reduce R2_score and a factor indicating average learning errors owing to biased experimental database.

  • In this work, the strain-amplitude independent and strain-amplitude dependent damping capacities of Mg-5%Sn alloy have been investigated as a function of its age-hardening response. The hardness increased with an increase in aging time, reached a peak value after 48 h, and then it gradually decreased. The damping capacities of the Mg-5%Sn alloy exhibited a decreasing tendency in the order of solution-treated, under-aged, peakaged, and over-aged states in the strain-amplitude dependent region, whereas they increased continuously with aging time in the strain-amplitude independent region. The microstructural examination during aging revealed that the lower concentration of Sn solutes in the α-(Mg) matrix and the lower density of the Mg2Sn precipitate particles may well be the crucial factors for better damping values in the strain-amplitude independent and strain-amplitude dependent regions, respectively.

  • AA 2026, which is used as an aviation material, is an improved version of 2024 and has higher physical properties, and is a material that has the potential to be applied to supersonic aircraft to be developed in the future. However, when an aircraft exceeds supersonic speeds, the surface heats up and the material must be resistant to this. Therefore, this study confirmed the high-temperature properties of AA 2026, an aviation structural material. AA 2026, solution treated at 500℃ for 4hr, was naturally aged at room temperature for more than 168 hr. Changes in microstructure and physical properties were confirmed over several hours of exposure to 100℃, 200℃, and 300℃, respectively. As a result of microstructure analysis, there was no significant change at 100℃, and from 200℃, GPB, a strengthening mechanism, grew and formed an S Phase. It was confirmed that the S Phase grew as the exposure time increased. Through a tensile test, it was confirmed that physical properties deteriorated as the precipitates grew. However, it was confirmed that the properties were stably maintained at 100℃, which is the temperature when the speed of a supersonic aircraft is less than Mach 2.

  • Research into the selection of suitable materials and the development of fast processing methods for press die manufacturing is absolutely necessary to reduce the production time and cost. In particular, knowledge of its heat properties must be considered whendeveloping a long press die. Generally, as the main component materials of press dies, Cr, W low alloy tool steel, high carbon-high chrome steel, high speed steel, etc., are used as thetooling steel for the cold die. Machine tools and wire-cut electric discharge machining are mainly used for processing the press die parts. There are many differences in the machining time and life cycle of die parts depending on the machining process. The parts produced by milling and grinding have a high manufacturing time and cost with a long life cycle, while thosemade by milling and wire-cut discharge machining have areduced manufacturing time and cost, whereastheir die life cycle is reduced. Therefore, in this study, we will discuss amethod of improving the life cycle of the die parts by using heat treatment as a processing method that reduces the manufacturing time and cost. SEM, EDS analysis and the surface roughness analysis of the surface and center of the workpiece are used for analyzing the specimens produced by three machining methods, viz. milling - grinding, milling - wire cut discharge, and milling - wire cut discharge - heat treatment. A method of making die parts having the same life cycle as those produced by milling - grinding is developed with the milling - wire cut discharge - high temperature tempering method.

  • Effect of processing condition on the hot extrusion of Al-Zn-Mg-Sc alloy was investigated. For this purpose, hot compression test and FE-simulation were conducted via Thermecmaster-Z and DEFORM-3D, respectively. The microstructure evolution during hot extrusion and post heat-treatment was investigated and deformation mechanisms were analyzed by constructing processing map. FE-simulation results show that the temperature difference between container and billet has considerable influence on the final shape of extruded T-shape bar. The relation between applied load and processing time was predicted by the FE-analysis as well as punch speed vs. stroke chart.

  • The present study is aimed at developing the TRIP(transformation induced plasticity) aided high strength low carbon steel using reversion process. An excellent combination of elongation over 40% and tensile strength abut 100kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ achieved in processing of 0.15C-0.5 Si-6Mn steel by slow heating to intercritial temperature region and accelerated cooling into room temperature. This good combination is caused by TRIP phenomena of retained austenite in steels during deformation. The stability of retained austenite is very important for the good ductility and it depends on the diffusion of carbon and manganeses during heat treatment. The accelerated cooling after holding at annealing temperature retards the formation of pearlite and provides the carbon enrichment in retained austenite in steel, resulting in the increase in elongation of the cold-rolled TRIP steel. On the other hand, heat treating the steel at 600$^{\circ}C$ for 5 hour before cold rolling increases elongation but reduces the amount of retained austenite after reversion processing. It is accounted that the heat treating is effective for the increase in the stability of retained austenite.
