Heat stroke in a dog is a life-threatening syndrome characterized by a high body temperature over $41^{\circ}C$, by the central nervous system dysfunction, and by multiple organ dysfunction. A 11-month-old male American Pit Bull Terrier was presented to clarify the cause of death to diagnostic laboratory. This dog showed clinical signs such as high body temperature ($42^{\circ}C$), severe tachypnea, hematochezia, epistaxis and hemoptysis after transportation at hot summer time. At necropsy, there were hemorrhages in skin, serosa of stomach and small intestine, and also dark red fluid in lumen of intestine. Histopathologic examination revealed extensive hemorrhages in stomach, muscle, skin, and tongue. In microbiology, pathologic bacteria such as Pasteurella, Boedetella, Salmonella, Clostridium, and circulating virus in Korea such as CDV, CIV, CAV, CHV, CCV, CPIV were negative except CPV. There were many gross and microscopic lesions suggesting hest stroke while pathologic agents and related lesions were not detected. Therefore we diagnosed this case as heatstroke.

This paper investigates the steady-state combustion characteristics of the Homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) engine with variable valve timing(VVT) and dimethyl ether(DME) direct injection, to find out its benefits in exhaust gas emissions. HCCI combustion is an attractive way to lower carbon dioxide($CO_2$), nitrogen oxides(NOx) emission and to allow higher fuel conversion efficiency. However, HCCI engine has inherent problem of narrow operating range at high load due to high in-cylinder peak pressure and consequent noise. To overcome this problem, the control of combustion start and heat release rate is required. It is difficult to control the start of combustion because HCCI combustion phase is closely linked to chemical reaction during a compression stroke. The combination of VVT and DME direct injection was chosen as the most promising strategy to control the HCCI combustion phase in this study. Regular gasoline was injected at intake port as main fuel, while small amount of DME was also injected directly into the cylinder as an ignition promoter for the control of ignition timing. Different intake valve timings were tested for combustion phase control. Regular gasoline was tested for HCCI operation and emission characteristics with various engine conditions. With HCCI operation, ignition delay and rapid burning angle were successfully controlled by the amount of internal EGR that was determined with VVT. For best IMEP and low HC emission, DME should be injected during early compression stroke. IMEP was mainly affected by the DME injection timing, and quantities of fuel DME and gasoline. HC emission was mainly affected by both the amount of gasoline and the DME injection timing. NOx emission was lower than conventional SI engine at gasoline lean region. However, NOx emission was similar to that in the conventional SI engine at gasoline rich region. CO emission was affected by the amount of gasoline and DME.

Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis(RAS) is inflammatory ulcerative condition of the oral mucosa. The lesions of RAS are self-limited and persist for 1 to 2 weeks, resolved with or without scarring and recurred after periods of remission. It is known that nicotine may protect oral mucosa from aphthous ulcers by keratinization of the oral mucosa. After quitting smoking, a stroke patient who suffered from RAS, used to relapse into RAS unless he didn't gargle with nicotine extract water. We diagnosed his case as heat in the stomach and treated with Chungwie-San(Qingwei-San). After medication with Chungwie-San, RAS was subsided and he stopped smoking during admission period.
Clinical observation was done on 272 cases of patients who were diagnosed as CVA with brain CT, TCD, MRI scan and clinical observation. They were hospitalized in the oriental medical hospital of Kyung-Won University from 1st January to 31st December in 1997. 1. The cases were classified into the following kinds: cerebral infarction, cerebral hemorrhage. and transient ischemic attack. The most case of them was the cerebral infarction. 2. There is no significant difference in the frequency of strokes in male and female. And the frequency of strokes was highest in the aged over 50. 3. In cerebral infarction the most frequent lesion was the territory of middle cerebral artery, and in cerebral hemorrhage the most frequent lesion was the basal ganglia. 4. The most ordinary preceding disease was hypertension. and the next was diabetes. 5. The rate of recurrence was high in cerebral infarction. 6. The cerebral infarction occurred usually in resting and sleeping, and the cerebral hemorrhage in acting. 7. The common symptoms were motor disability and verbal disturbance. 8 The average time to start physical therapy was 1l.3rd day after stroke in cerebral infarction and it was 15.2th day after stroke in cerebral hemorrhage. 9. The common complications were urinary tract infection, pneumonia, myocardial infarction. 10. Hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia are usually found more frequently in cerebral infarction than in hemorrhage. 11. In acute or subacute stage, the methods of smoothening the flow of ki(順氣), dispelling phlegm(祛痰), clearing away heat(淸熱) or purgation(瀉下) were frequently used. and in recovering stage, the methods of replenishing ki(補氣), tonifying the blood(補血) or tranquilization(安神) were frequently used.

To facilitate low-pressure selective catalyst reduction (L.P SCR), a high exhaust-gas temperature of a four-stroke diesel engine for a ship's generator is required. This study aimed at reducing the exhaust-gas temperature by adjusting the valve open-close timing and fuel injection timing to satisfy the operating conditions of L.P SCR and prevent accidents associated with the generator engine due to high temperature. To lower exhaust-gas temperature, the angle of the camshaft was adjusted and the shim of the fuel injection pump was added. As a result, the maximum explosion pressure increased and the average of the turbocharger outlet temperature dropped. Considering the heat loss from the turbocharger outlet to the SCR inlet, the operation condition for L.P SCR was satisfied with 290 ℃. The study demonstrates that safe operation of a diesel generator can be achieved by lowering the exhaust-gas temperature.

Objective : To investigate the syndrome differentiation's types and herbal medicine of migraine through Chinese journals review Methods : Journal search was performed using the searching engine of China Academic Journal(CAJ) in China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI) from January 2000 to November 2010. Searching key words were "migraine", "chinese traditional medicine" and "syndrome differentiation". We included all kinds type of journals that explained or referred definite syndrome differentiations. The methods of treatment and Herbal medications by syndrome differentiation in contents of finally selected journals were extracted and summarized. Results : Eighteen chinese journals were selected finally. Fifteen kinds of syndrome differentiations about migraine were investigated, which included blood stasis due to qi stagnation (氣滯血瘀) quoted 15 times, middle obstruction of phlegm-dampness (痰濕中阻) 11 times, liver yang transforming into wind (肝陽化風) 10 times, deficiency of qi and blood (氣血虧虛) 6 times, wind-cold invading 風寒侵襲 淸陽鬱遏 4 times, cold invading reverting yin (寒犯厥阴) 4 times, liver-kidney deficiency (肝腎虧虛) 3 times, liver qi depression and qi stagnation (肝鬱氣滯) 2 times, liver depression transforming into fires (肝鬱化火) 2 times, wind-fire of liver-gallbladder (肝膽風火) 3 times, intense stomach fire and heat (胃火熱盛) 2 times, insufficiency of blood deficiency (血虛不榮) 2 times, insufficiency of qi deficiency (氣虛不充) 2 times, insufficiency of kidney qi and sea of marrow deficiency (腎氣不足, 髓海空虛) 2 times, and qi depression due to wind invading (風邪侵襲, 氣鬱不宣) 2 times. Conclusion : We suggests the first choice of oriental treatment for migraine can be considered among syndrome differentiation's types of blood stasis due to qi stagnation, middle obstruction of phlegm-dampness, liver yang transforming into wind, deficiency of qi and blood, and cold invading reverting yin. further systematic study will be needed.

In spite of abundant clinical resources of stroke patients, the objective and logical data analyses or diagnostic systems were not established in oriental medicine. In the present study we tried to develop the statistical diagnostic tool discriminating the subtypes of oriental medicine diagnostic system, syndrome differentiation (SD). Discriminant analysis was carried out using clinical data collected from 1,478 stroke patients with the same subtypes diagnosed identically by two clinical experts with more than 3 year experiences. Numerical discriminant models were constructed using important 61 symptom and syndrome indices. Diagnostic accuracy and prediction rate of 5 SD subtypes: The overall diagnostic accuracy of 5 SD subtypes using 61 indices was 74.22%. According to subtypes, the diagnostic accuracy of "phlegm-dampness" was highest (82.84%), and followed by "qi-deficiency", "fire/heat", "static blood", and "yin-deficiency". On the other hand, the overall prediction rate was 67.12% and that of qi-deficiency was highest (73.75%). Diagnostic accuracy and prediction rate of 4 SD subtypes: The overall diagnostic accuracy and prediction rate of 4 SD subtypes except "static blood" were 75.06% and 71.63%, respectively. According to subtypes, the diagnostic accuracy and prediction rate was highest in the "phlegm-dampness" (82.84%) and qi-deficiency (81.69%), respectively. The statistical discriminant model of constructed using 4 SD subtypes, and 61 indices can be used in the field of oriental medicine contributing to the objectification of SD.
Clinical observation was done on 290 cases of patients who were diagnosed as CVA with brain CT, TCD, MRI scan and clinical observation. They were hospitalized in the oriental medical hospital of Kyung-Won University from 1st January to 31st December in 1996. 1. The cases were classified into the following kinds : cerebral infarction, cerebral hemorrhage, and transient ischemic attack. The most case of them was the cerebr진 infarction. 4. The most ordinary preceding disease was hypertension, and the next was diabetes. 5. The rate of recurrence was high in cerebral infarction. 6. The frequency of strokes seems to have no relation to the season. 7. The cerebral infarction occurred usually in resting and sleeping, and the cerebral hemorrhage in acting. 8. The course of entering hospital, most patients visited this hospital as soon as CVA occurred. And the half of patient visited this hospital within 2 days after CVA attack. 9. In the cases of patients who were unconscious at the admission, the prognosis was worse than that of the alert patients. 10. The common symptoms were motor disability and verbal disturbance. 11. The average duration of hospitalization was 27.4 days, and in case of cerebral hemorrhage the duration was prolonged. 12. The average time to start physical therapy was 13.3rd day after stroke in cerebral infarction and it was 19.9th day after stroke in cerebral hemorrhage. 13. The common complications were urinary tract infection, pneumonia, myocardial infarction and so on. 15. At the time of entering hospital, in most cases the blood pressure was high, but blood pressure was well controlled at the time of discharge. 16. Generally reported, hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia are usually found in cerebral infarction. But in this study, they were found more frequently in cerebral hemorrhage than in infarction. 17, In the most cases, western and oriental medical treatments were given simultaneously. 18.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics and the improvement in the symptoms of the patients who showed improvement after the administration of Yeoldahanso-tang and Cheongpyesagan-tang. Methods: The patients whose Sasang Constitution were examined by an expert at six Oriental medical hospitals and three regional Oriental-medicine clinics, 89 showed a predetermined symptom improvement when Yeoldahanso-tang and Cheongpysagan-tang were administered to them from November 2007 to July 2008. The traits of the patients and the effects of their treatment were examined. Results and Conclusions: 1. There were about as many male patients as there were female patients, but 21.3% of the patients who were female and who were in their 40's showed the most improvement, which makes them the biggest category in this study. 2. The main syndromes in which the patients showed improvement were hemi-paralysis, vertigo, and headache, and the ordinary symptoms in which the patients showed improvement were diarrhea, fatigue, and dry mouth. 3. The average food intake of the patients was highest and their feces had intermediate hardness (semi-soft). 4. The amount of the patients' sweat was either high(38.2%) or appropriate(38.2%) and they showed a dislike of heat over coldness. 5. Among the diseases that the patients previously had, high blood pressure. The above results show that Yeoldahanso-tang and Cheongpyesagan-tang can be considered beneficial to females in their 40's and to stroke patients whose food intake is normal, whose sweat level is either copious or appropriate, who dislike heat and who are suffering from high blood pressure.
Background : The varieties of manifestations referred to headache and vertigo have been long complicated physicians in the efficient diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.
