Fouling is very serious problem in heat exchanger because it rapidly deteriorates the performance of heat exchanger. Cross-flow heat exchanger with vortex generators is developed, which enhance heat transfer and reduce fouling. In the present heat exchanger, shell and baffle are removed from the conventional shell-and-tube heat exchanger. The naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to measure the local heat transfer coefficients. The experiments are performed for single circular tube, staggered array tube bank and in-line array tube bank with and without vortex generators. Local and average Nusselt numbers of single tube and tube bank with vortex generator are investigated and compared to those of without vortex generator.

A heat exchanger (100,000 W) using two-phase loop thermosyphons (TLT) was developed as a waste heat recovery system. An experimental and simulation study was carried out on the heat transfer characteristics of TLT heat exchanger, and the results from the experiments were used to see the possibility which the TLT heat exchanger could be an alternate solution for waste heat recovery system. The experimental results showed the provisional results as a waste heat recovery system. Also computer simulation code can predict the TLT system about the effects of various variables for the operation. Computer simulation results based on the thermal resistance networks were compared with the experimental results. The study clearly shows that the computer simulation for the TLT heat exchanger can Predict the most cases of the affecting parameters involved, provided that correct empirical correlations are used.

A new fluidized bed heat exchanger for exhaust gas heat recovery is do-veloped. Compared to the existing ones, the present heat exchanger system is featured by the particle fluidization method which does not depend on conventionally used baffle plate with holes and by the multiple downcomer tubes to extract heat energy from hot particles during the time particles moves down to be fed again to the hot gas line. Particles are introduced to the main hot gas stream alongside the pipe circumference. The heat exchanger performance and pressure drop are evaluated through experiments for the present gas-to-water heat exchanger system.

Design of experiments (DOE) technique has been used to design an exhaust heat exchanger to reduce the exhaust gas temperature under high load conditions in a spark-ignition engine. The DOE evaluates the influence and the interaction of a selected eight design parameters of the heat exchanger affecting the cooling performance of the exhaust gas through a limited number of experiments. The heat exchanger was installed between the exhaust manifold and the inlet of the close-coupled catalytic converter (CCC) to reduce thermal aging. To maximize the heat transfer between exhaust gas and coolant, fins were implemented at the inner surface of the heat exchanger. The design parameters consist of the fin geometry (length, thickness, arrangement, and number of fin), coolant direction, heat exchanger wall thickness, and the length of the heat exchanger. The acceptable range of each design parameter is discussed by analyzing the DOE results.
This paper proposes a new method for the discovery and design of an optimal heat exchanger network. The method is based upon the concept of pinch, a problem reduction technique and the heuristics developed in this work. It generates subproblems in a logical way and solves the subproblems by the heuristics to synthesize an optimal network structure. It is thought that the heuristics can preserve the minimum utility consumption, the minimum number of heat exchanger units, and the minimum number of stream splittings needed for a given problem. The minimum heat exchanger area for the optimal network can then be obtained by adjusting the temperatures associate with the heat exchanger in the optimal network structure. The method is applied to the problems appeared in the literatures. The results show the reductions in the number of heat exchanger units for some problems.

For numerical analysis of the plate heat exchanger, a lot of time are required in modeling work and calculation. Whereas, this paper was purposed to identify characteristic of the plate heat exchanger through simplification of modeling by interpreting the numerical analysis proximity with the actual model. This study was also examined temperature difference between inlet side and outlet side, inner pressure drop, heat transfer area of plate and change of heat transfer coefficient on the plate depending on the inner corrugation angle and corrugation pitch of a herring bon pattern of the plate heat exchanger among chevron types of the plate exchanger.

This paper considers the influence of internal heat exchangers to the efficiency of a refrigerating system. These internal heat exchangers(liquid-suction or suction-line heat exchangers) can, in some cases, yield improved system performance while in other cases they degrade system performance. A steady state mathematical model is used to analysis the performance characteristics of refrigeration system with internal heat exchanger. The influence of operating conditions, such as gas cooler pressure and evaporation temperatures, superheat in the evaporator and temperature of gas cooler outlet, to optimal dimensions of the heat exchanger is also analyzed in the paper. The main results were summarized as follows : the mass flowrate of R744, inner diameter tube and length of internal heat exchanger, and effectiveness have an effect on the cooling capacity, compressor work and RCI(Relative capacity index) of this system. With a thorough grasp of these effect, it is necessary to design the R744 compression refrigeration cycle using internal heat exchanger.

A general procedure for the optimal design of a micro-channel heat exchanger for heat pump systems is presented. For this design, a performance analysis program that can reflect the various geometric variables of the micro-channel heat exchanger was developed. The deviation between simulated and experiment results of previous research was within 4% for the heat transfer rate. To prove the feasibility of the optimal design process, the performance of the reference heat exchanger was compared to that of the optimized heat exchanger. The $JF_{air}$ and PECv of the optimized heat exchanger were enhanced by 14% and 26%, respectively.

In this study, the defrosting behavior according to the surface characteristics of a fin-tube heat exchanger is experimentally examined. It has been found that the draining rates of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic heat exchangers are evenly dispersed during do-frosting, compared with that of the bare one. This is due to the high density frost of the hydrophilic heat exchanger, and the surface characteristics of the hydrophobic heat ex-changer, The rest periods of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic heat exchangers are shorter, and their weight of residual water is also smaller than that of the bare heat exchanger. The hydrophobic heat exchanger is the most efficient in terms of the defrosting efficiency.

A lab-scale fluidized bed heat exchanger for waste gas heat recovery is devised and tested. Compared to our previous works on fluidized bed type system with a single riser, the present heat exchanger system is featured by its multiple (four) risers to handle increased amount of exhaust gas. Particles are introduced to the main hot gas stream alongside the pipe circumference near riser inlets. The heat exchanger performance and pressure drop are evaluated through experiments for the present gas-to-water heat exchanger system.
