The effect of VC addition on the microstructural evolution of Fe-TiC cermet has been investigated. The microstructures of the Fe-TiC varied with the amount of VC addition. The addition of 1wt% VC enhanced the instability of liquid-solid interface ; the dissolving interface showed round shape instead of facetted one which was ascribed to the increase of lattice mismatch between TiC and solid-solution carbide. in the speci-men with 10wt% VC the new set of solid-solution carbide grains of uniform and small size was formed in-side coarse TiC particles by diffusion induced recrystallizatin (DIR). With increasing the heat-treatment time fine recrystallized grains were dispersed homogeneously in the matrix and resulted in the increase in fracture strength.
The thermal stability of nitric acid solutions after contact with non-irradiated and irradiated tributyl phosphate (TBP) and its solution in Isopar-M has been studied. It has been established that exothermic processes occur during heating due to the interaction of soluble radiolysis products and the decomposition of the extractant with nitric acid. Such processes can occur at temperatures below 100 ℃, but unlike a thermal explosion that occurs in seconds, they are longer in time and are accompanied by weak heat evolution. Their intensity depends on the composition of the extractant, the concentration of HNO3, and the volume ratio of the organic and aqueous phases. The presence of extractant degradation products in raffinates does not pose a risk of a rapid evolution of gaseous products during evaporation, however, the presence of reducing agents can significantly increase the intensity of the exothermic decomposition of raffinates.
Seoul National University General Circulation Model (SNUGCM) has been run for 100 years to obtain daily temperature and meridional velocity at the Northern lower stratosphere. The model results are compared with the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. The polar temperature and the eddy heat flux from the model show that the model-produced climatology has well-known cold bias and weaker planetary wave activities. The model climatology also has a lag in the seasonal evolution. The relationship between the model-produced polar temperature and the eddy heat flux is investigated with respect to the interannual and decadal time scales. The interannual variation of the polar temperature is related with both total and stationary eddy heat flux in January and March, which is in agreement with observation. The model, however, does not reproduce the relationship between the decadal variation of the polar temperature and transient eddy heat flux, which is revealed in the observed data.
Within recent years attention has been focused on the method of hydrogen storage using metal hydride reactor due to its high energy density, durability, safety and low operating pressure. In this paper, a numerical study is carried out to investigate the coupled heat and mass transfer process for absorption in a cylindrical metal hydride hydrogen storage reactor using a newly developed model. The simulation results demonstrate the evolution of temperature, equilibrium pressure, H/M atomic ratio and velocity distribution as time goes by. Initially, hydrogen is absorbed earlier from near the wall which sets the cooling boundary condition owing to that absorption process is exothermic reaction. Temperature increases rapidly in entire region at the beginning stage due to the initial low temperature and enough metal surface for hydrogen absorption. As time goes by, temperature decreases slowly from the wall region due to the better heat removal. Equilibrium pressure distribution appears similarly with temperature distribution for reasons of the function of temperature. This work provides a detailed insight into the mechanism and corresponding physicochemical phenomena in the reactor during the hydrogen absorption process.

This paper addresses a numerical method for predicting transient temperature distributions in the wall of a curved pipe subjected to internally thermal stratification flow. A simple and convenient numerical method of treating the unsteady conjugate heat transfer in the non-orthogonal coordinate systems is presented. The proposed method is implemented in a finite volume thermal-hydraulic computer code based on a cell-centered, non-staggered grid arrangement, the SIMPLEC algorithm, a higher-order bounded convection scheme, and the modified version of momentum interpolation method. Calculations are performed for the transient evolution of thermal stratification in two curved pipes, where the one has thick wall and the other has so thin wall that its presence can be negligible in the heat transfer analysis. The predicted results show that the thermally stratified flow and transient conjugate heat transfer in a curved pipe with a finite wall thickness can be satisfactorily analyzed by the present numerical method, and that the neglect of wall thickness in the prediction of pipe wall temperature distributions can provide unacceptably distorted results.
A study was conducted to examine the precipitation phenomena of Al-2.1Li-2.9Cu alloy by differential scanning calorimetry and transmission electron microscopy. DSC curves were measured over the temperature range of $25{\sim}550^{\circ}C$ at a heating rate of $2{\sim}20^{\circ}C$/min.. Three heat evolution peaks and three heat absorption peaks were observed in the DSC curve for the as-quenched specimen. From DSC results and TEM analysis, it was proved that the precipitation sequence in the as-quenched specimen is supersaturated solid solution ${\rightarrow}$ GP zone ${\rightarrow}{\delta}^{\prime}{\rightarrow}T_1{\rightarrow}T_2$ and ${\theta}^{\prime}$ was detected in the peak aged specimen at $160^{\circ}C$. The major phase formed at peak hardeness in the aging at $160^{\circ}C$ was ${\delta}^{\prime}$ phase. The activation energies for the formation of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ and $T_1$ phases were 22.3kcal/mole and 24.3kcal/mole, respectively. These lower activation energies than those for diffusion of Cu and Li in Al are ascribed to the quenched-in excess vacancies.
In this study, we focused on the correlation between the solidification structure, heat treatment and mechanical properties of the A356 alloy according to the conditions of Sr modification. The microstructural evolution of the eutectic Si and ${\alpha}-Al$ phase in the A356 alloy castings depending on the amount of Sr were investigated during solid solution heat treatment using an optical microscope, a scanning electron microscope and an image analyzer. In addition, tensile tests on the heat treated materials examined the relationship between the microstructure and the fracture surface. The as-cast A356 alloys under 40 ppm Sr showed an undermodified microstructure, but that of the added 60-80 ppm Sr had well modified structure of fine fibrous silicon. After solid solution treatment, the microstructure of the undermodified A356 alloy exhibited a partially spheroidized morphology, but the remainder showed the fragmentation of fibrous shaped silicon. The spheroidization of the eutectic silicon in the modified A356 alloys was completed during heat treatment, which was very effective in increasing the elongation. This is supported by the fracture surface in the tensile test.

This paper focuses on the unsteady close-contact melting phenomenon occurring between a phase change material kept at its melting temperature and a flat surface on which constant heat flux is imposed. Based on the same simplifications and framework of analysis as the case of constant surface temperature, an approximate analytical solution which depends only on the liquid-to-solid density ratio is successfully derived. In order to keep consistency with the known solution procedure, both the dimensionless wall heat flux and the Stefan number are properly redefined. The obtained solution proves to agree quite well with the published numerical data and to be capable of resolving the fundamental features of unsteady close-contact melting, especially in the presence of the solid-liquid density difference. The density ratio directly affects the film growth rate and the initial value of solid descending velocity, thereby controlling the duration of unsteady process. The effects of other parameters can be evaluated readily from the steady solution which is implied in the normalized result. Since the dimensionless surface temperature for the present boundary condition increases from zero to unity along the evolution path of the liquid film thickness, the unsteady process lasts longer than that for the case of isothermal heating.
Blended Low Heat type cement is ground granulated blast furnace slag and fly ash mixed ternary with ordinary portland cement. From the viewpoint of X-ray patterns of domestic LHC, the main components of cement such as $C_2$S, $C_3$A, $C_3$S are considerably reduced. Therefore the heat evolution of LHC paste is 42cal/g lower than of OPC paste. At early age, the compressive strength development of LHC concrete is delayed, but the slump loss ratio of fresh concrete is reduced more than 20% with elapsed time. The penetrability of LHC is lower than that of OPC by 1/7.8 with the penetrability of chloride ion into the concrete until the age of 120 days. And the PD Index value of LHC is 0.44$\times$10-6 $\textrm{cm}^2$/s, which indicates only 39.3% of OPC. From the Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry test of cement past, we know that the pore size of LHC is more dense than that of OPC by production of C-S-H.
600 MPa-grade deformed bar samples were manufactured by conventional hot rolling and subsequent Tempcore heat treatment processes. Considering the short-time water quenching step of the Tempcore process for hot-rolled steel, it is inevitable that the temperature profile of the deformed bar depends strongly on its position throughout the sample thickness. As a result, its microstructure can be easily divided into two regions, the surface and the core regions. The former is expected to have a fresh martensite microstructure under rapid cooling conditions, but self-tempering occurs due to the intense heat flow from the hot core region after the process. The latter is generally known to exhibit a mixed microstructure of ferrite and pearlite due to its slow cooling rate. In this study, detailed microstructural evolutions were examined through the thickness direction. The large variation of the microstructure through the thickness direction in the deformed bar samples is partly due to the easy carbon diffusion from the limited additions of alloying elements.
