  • During combustion process in a diesel engine radiation heat transfer is the same order of magnitude as the convection heat transfer. An approximation of heat and momentum source distributions is applied at a level consistent with those used in modelling the soot distribution and the turbulence instead of modelling the fuel spray and the chemical kinetics. This paper illustrates a use of the third order spherical harmonics approximation to the radiative transfer equation and delta-Eddington approximation to the scattering phase function for droplets in the flow. Results are obtained numerically by a time marching finite difference scheme. This study aims to compare heat transfer with convection heat transfer and to investigate the importance of scattering by fuel droplets and of accounting for spatial variations in the extinction coefficient on the radiative heat flux distributions at the walls of a disc shaped diesel engine.

  • In order to design and develop a spark ignition engine, many studies must be preceded about the characteristics of thermal flow. For measurement of transient wall temperature thin film thermocouples of Bendersky type were manufactured and these probes were fixed into the wall of combustion chamber. Surface wall temperatures were measured in experiments of various engine speeds. Transient heat fluxes were calculated from the wall temperature measurements. Pressure was measured from combustion chamber using pressure transducer and gas temperatures were calculated using the state equation of ideal gas. And instantaneous heat transfer coefficients were obtained. It will be the basic data for the formulae of instantaneous heat transfer coefficients.

  • In the engine design, it will be able to higher compression ratio and decreasing the cylinder size, if improve the vaporization of fuel and increasing the mass burned fraction in the kerosene engine. Therefore, concave, convex and straight types of hear ring set up neighborhood intake valve into the combustion chamber. The vaporization effect of fuel satisfied by heat transfer from the heat ring, but have need of selection of the location and surface area of the heat ring. Also, combustion duration of the combustion chamber with concave heat ring shorter than combustion chamber with other two types of heat ring, and about 30percent decreases in combustion duration as compared with combustion chamber without heat ring.

  • This study has been carried out the experiment for the possibility of biogas reforming using waste heat. The source of this waste heat is the exhaust gas from a small-sized gas engine generator. For recovering the waste heat, Two-stage heat exchanger is manufactured. The two-stage heat exchanger is composed of a heat exchanger for the exhaust gas and a heat exchanger for the water. This two-stage heat exchanger is used for reforming the biogas by means of on-site hydrogen production at the small-sized gas engine generator. The two-stage heat exchanger is coupled with the biogas reformer which is a kind of catalytic reformer. To confirm a heat recovery efficiency of the two-stage heat exchanger, temperature differences of inlet and outlet locations are measured. Also, the variations of syngas concentrations with various biogas flow rates are investigated. As a result using manufactured two-stage heat exchanger, the biogas can be reformed from waste heat recovery. This experiment suggests that the exhaust gas heat exchanger is available for reforming the biogas.

  • Noise regulation of heavy construction machinery is getting stricter: 3 dB per every 4 year in European community. To meet this requirement many engineers have adopted the enclosing structures with thick absorbing materials and small opening, This increases internal temperature of the enclosure which have engine systems such as electric equipment that are vulnerable to heat, and engine block and muffler that can be regarded as heat sources. So noise control engineers have to consider a coupling problem: combining heat balance and noise reduction. This paper describes this approach by introducing simple heat transfer theory and SEA. The enclosing system of the loader whose enclosing structure consists of two rooms is investigated to show the validity of this method. The results represent that the simple heat transfer theory can be useful to estimate cooling performance when it is linked together by the back pressure theory in duct system. and the radiated noise can also be estimated by the SEA. Therefore a designer can use these approaches to define the opening ratio of an enclosure and the mass flow rate of air considering radiating noise.

  • As automotive diesel engines adopt the direct injection method for a lower level of the exhaust emission and a higher fuel efficiency, the maximum temperature of engine coolant decreases. Consequently, the total available heat source from the engine coolant decreases over 35%. However, the heating source of air-conditioning system in automobiles depends on the hot engine coolant completely, so that it is nearly impossible to control air conditioning in heating season. Therefore, the present study has been carried out to develop the air conditioning system for the high efficient heat pump type using the HFC-134a. Especially, the air conditioning system of heating has been developed at a beginning stage, when it has low heat source from small and medium sized diesel recreation vehicles. To develop a control logic system for air conditioning system which is a heat pump type with a heat recovery exchanger, its cycle characteristics has been investigated according to the opening of LEV at a bench system.

  • A scroll expander was designed for an energy converter from waste heat of IC engine coolant to useful shaft work. The scroll expander is to run in a Rankine cycle which receives heat energy transferred from engine coolant circulation cycle. The working fluid was Ethanol. For axial compliance, a back pressure chamber was provided on the rear side of the orbiting scroll. Lubrication oil was delivered by a positive displacement type oil pump driven by the shaft rotation. Performance analysis on the scroll expander showed that the expander efficiency was 63.4%. It extracts shaft power of 0.6 kW out of engine coolant waste heat of 17.5 kW, resulting in the Rankine cycle efficiency of 3.43%.

  • Recently, Stirling engines are emerging as a key device for power conversion of renewable energy or waste energy. This study develops a LTDSE(Low Temperature Differential Stirling Engine) using a water spray for higher heat transfer and performs load performance tests for various flow rates and temperatures of hot water spray for variable engine loads emulated by a mechanical friction device. Internal temperature and pressure, working frequency and inlet and outlet temperature of the supply water are measured. As a result, the increases in flow rate and temperature of hot water respectively enhance the power output, efficiency and the working frequency, while the increasing engine load leads to decreases in working frequency but increases in the pressure amplitude. Eventually, it is revealed there exists a maximum shaft power of the test engine.
