An important goal in diesel engine research is the development of a means to reduce the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOX). The use of a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system is one of the most effective techniques currently available for reducing nitrogen oxides. Since Particular Matter (PM) fouling reduces the efficiency of an EGR cooler, a trade-off exists between the amount of NOX and PM emissions, especially at high engine loads. In the present study, engine dynamometer experiments have been performed to investigate the heat exchange characteristics of the stack-type EGR coolers with wave fin pitches of 3.6 and 4.6 mm. The results show that the heat exchange effectiveness is decreased as surface area decrease with pitch of 4.6 mm due to PM fouling. As surface area increase at pitch of 3.6 mm, super-cooling happens in the recirculated exhaust gas.
This paper deals with theoretical model developed for analyzing the heat transfer of automotive cooling systems. The model has a modular structure which links various cooling system submodels. From the model, heat transfer rate of automotive cooling systems can be predicted, providing useful information at the early stages of the design and development. The aim of the study is to develop a simulation program for automotive cooling system analysis and a performance analysis program for analyzing heat exchanger. Heat release rate from combustion gas to coolant through the cylinder wall in engine cylinder was analysed by using an engine cycle simulation program. In this paper, details of each submodel are described together with the overall structure of the vehicle model.

In this paper, heat conduction characteristics of the cylinder block of a small 3 - cylinder, 4¬stroke gasoline engine were analyzed using the 3 - dimensional finite element method. Based on the experimental data, the engine cycle simulation was carried out in order to obtain the heat transfer coefficient and the temperature of the gas and the mean heat transfer coefficient of the coolant. Heat transfer data of the gas, which were averaged with respect to exposure time to the wall, were taken as convective boundary conditions corresponding to the operating conditions to obtain the temperature fields of the block. Finally silicon nitride(Si3N4) was taken as the material of the block liner in order to investigate its temperature distribution characteristics and compare the results with the original ones.
We determined the transfer coefficient through the analysis of three dimensional temperature distribution in comparison with the measured temperature on the piston in the turbocharged diesel engine. And we analyzed the thermal stress and the thermal deformation with that heat transfer coefficient by using finite element method. According to this results, we found that maximum tempetature range of the piston appeared at the upper part of the piston crown and that the heat transfer coefficient of the upper part of the piston is smaller than that of the lower one. It showed that the maximum thermal deformation is shown at the edge of the upper part of piston and that the maximum thermal stress was shown on the lower part of the piston crown. Finally, we defined the method of determination of a piston heat transfer analysis by using measured temperature on the piston and analyzed temperature with finite element method.
Global air traffic is forecast to grow at an average annual rate of around 5% in the next 20 years. The continuous growth of air traffic and raised environmental awareness put increasing pressure on aero engine manufacturers to reduce fuel burn and emissions. NEWAC are a new integrated program of the European Union with focus on innovative core engine concepts to achieve this problem. In this paper, Within NEWAC, active core engine configurations will be investigated. the investigation is focused on the optimal design of the CAC heat exchanger for active core. For optimal design of he CAC heat exchanger, the HTFS of basic design of heat exchanger are analyzed so as to proceed an optimization routines based on Response Surface Method(RSM) and Design of Experiment(DOE). As a result, CAC heat exchanger optimized by 1.0314 lb/s mass flow rate and 3.9058 mm TP of tube layout and 206.8181 mm height of heat exchanger and 918 tube number for heat transfer and pressure drop. We confirm the design optimization using RSM and DOE is useful on complex structure of heat exchanger.

The closed cycle diesel engine is used in a closed circuit system which has no air breathing. The working fluid as intake mixture are consisted of oxygen, argon and recirculated exhaust gas in order to obtain underwater or underground power sources. In the present study, the high pressure diesel engine which can be operated by the closed cycle system with high intake pressure for increasing the net power rate is designed. It has been carried out to investigate the combustion characteristics of high pressure diesel engine according to the power rate. The maximum cylinder pressure and heat release rate were investigated. Also, major experimental data such as specific fuel consumption rate, oxygen concentrations, fuel conversion efficiency, polytropic exponent, and IMEP were compared with low pressure diesel engine experimental data.
It is well known that the combustion phenomenon of diesel engine is an unsteady turbulent diffusion combustion. Therefore, the combustion performance of diesel engine is related to a complex phenomenon which involves the various factors of combustion, such as a injection pressure, injection timing, injection rate, and operation conditions of engine. In this study, the spray and the flame development processes in a single cylinder D.I. diesel visualization engine which uses the electronically controlled injection system were visualized to interpret the complicated combustion phenomenon by using high speed CCD camera. In addition, the cylinder pressure and heat release rate were also obtained in order to analyze the diesel combustion characteristics under several engine conditions.
The metadata for urban meteorological observation is standardized through comparison with those established at the World Meteorological Organization and the Korea Meteorological Administration to understand the surrounding environment around the sites exactly and maintain the networks and sites efficiently. It categorizes into metadata for an observational network and observational sites. The latter is again divided into the metadata for station general information, local scale information, micro scale information, and visual information in order to explain urban environment in detail. The metadata also contains the static information such as urban structure, surface cover, metabolism, communication, building density, roof type, moisture/heat sources, and traffic as well as the update information on the environment change, maintenance, replacement, and/or calibration of sensors. The standardized metadata for urban meteorological observation is applied to the Weather Information Service Engine (WISE) integrated meteorological sensor network and sites installed at Incheon area. It will be very useful for site manager as well as researchers in fields of urban meteorology, radiation, surface energy balance, anthropogenic heat, turbulence, heat storage, and boundary layer processes.
