We investigated whether human could perceive the heading direction from the optic flow made from random dots and real images simulating the motion of the observer and objects. When an object moves across the focus of expansion(FOE) in random dot simulation. the observer perceived the focus of expansion biased toward the motion direction of the object. supporting the hypothesis that the direction repulsion is produced between the expansional and the horizontal planar motion components. With real image display observers tended to perceive one's heading direction biased toward the c center of the scene regardless of the direction and position of moving 0bcts. And it was observed that the deeper the depth of the background was the larger the judgment error was. These results suggest it is more likely that human depends on different cues than the optic flow when they perceive or judge one's heading direction in the real environment.
This paper deals with three dimensional orientation estimation algorithm for an attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) based on nine-axis inertial/magnetic sensor signals. In terms of the orientation estimation based on the use of a Kalman filter (KF), the quaternion is arguably the most popular orientation representation. However, one critical drawback in the quaternion representation is that undesirable magnetic disturbances affect not only yaw estimation but also roll and pitch estimations. In this paper, a sequential direction cosine matrix-based orientation KF for AHRS has been presented. The proposed algorithm uses two linear KFs, consisting of an attitude KF followed by a heading KF. In the latter, the direction of the local magnetic field vector is projected onto the heading axis of the inertial frame by considering the dip angle, which can be determined after the attitude KF. Owing to the sequential KF structure, the effects of even extreme magnetic disturbances are limited to the roll and pitch estimations, without any additional decoupling process. This overcomes an inherent issue in quaternion-based estimation algorithms. Validation test results show that the proposed method outperforms other comparison methods in terms of the yaw estimation accuracy during perturbations and in terms of the recovery speed.
This paper describe the method and the result of making a fiber optic gyrocompass measuring the heading angles of a ship with a fiber optic sensor. As the method seeking for the heading angles, it is possible to get the heading angles by measuring the output signals from a stationary fiber optic sensor in at least three directions such as a heading direction and other two directions having phase difference ${\phi}1$ and ${\phi}2$ to the heading. We made the static fiber optic gyrocompass by a high performance fiber optic sensor having scale factor of 210mV/deg/s and resolution of 0.5deg/hr using this principle. The accuracy of this system was $0.29^{\circ}$ from 20 numbers of data measuring the arbitrary heading angle.

Geomagnetic sensors are widely utilized for sensing heading direction of quadrotors. However, measurement from a geomagnetic sensor is easily corrupted by environmental magnetic field interference and roll/pitch directional motion. In this paper, a measurement method of a quadrotor heading direction is proposed for application to yaw attitude control. In order to eliminate roll/pitch directional motion effect, the geomagnetic sensor data is compensated using the roll/pitch angles measured for stabilization control. In addition, yaw-directional angular velocity data from a gyroscope sensor is fused with the geomagnetic sensor data using a complementary filter which is a simple and intuitive sensor fusion method. The proposed method is applied to experiments, and the results are presented to prove validity and effectiveness of the proposed method.
This paper presents a new approach for mobile robot heading detection using MEMS Gyro north finding method in the indoor environment. Based on this, the robot heading angle measurement scheme is proposed; improved north finding theory and algorithm are also explained. Several approaches are applied to confirm system's precision and effectiveness. In order to find out the heading angle, a single axis MEMS gyroscope to sense the angle between the robot heading direction and the north is used. To reach enough estimation accuracy and reduce detection time, the least square method (LSM) for the signal fitting and parameter estimation is applied. Through a turn-table, we setup a carouseling system to decrease the substantial bias effect on gyroscope's heading angle. For the evaluation of the proposed method, this system is implemented to the Pioneer robot platform. The performance and heading error are analyzed after the test. From the simulation and experimental results, system's accuracy, usefulness and adaptability are shown.

This paper describes an alignment algorithm that estimates the initial heading angle of AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) for starting navigation in a sea area. In the basic dead reckoning system, the initial orientation of the vehicle is very important. In particular, the initial heading value is an essential factor in determining the performance of the entire navigation system. However, the heading angle of AUVs cannot be measured accurately because the DCS (Digital Compass) corrupted by surrounding magnetic field in pointing true north direction of the absolute global coordinate system (not the same to magnetic north direction). Therefore, we constructed an experimental constraint and designed an algorithm based on extended Kalman filter using only inertial navigation sensors and a GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver basically. The value of sensor covariance was selected by comparing the navigation results with the reference data. The proposed filter estimates the initial heading angle of AUVs for navigation in a sea area and reflects sampling characteristics of each sensor. Finally, we verify the performance of the filter through experiments.

Heading bias effects in PNS using IMUs attached to shoes are analyzed in this paper. The navigation algorithms of a single foot PNS where one IMU is attached to a foot and dual foot PNSs where two IMUs are attached to each foot are derived. Two navigation algorithms are proposed for the dual foot PNS: 1) the positions from the independent right and left foot PNSs are averaged to provide the final position, 2) the right and left foot PNSs are correlated and it provides positions of each foot. Furthermore, it is proven that two methods are equal. Using the derived navigation algorithms the effect of heading bias caused by a misalignment of the moving direction and IMU is analyzed. The analysis explains the position error of a single foot PNS is diverged while the heading bias is effectively compensated in dual foot PNSs because of the symmetry of heading biases. The experimental results confirm the analysis.

This paper presents the navigation method for a mobile robot which uses a single camera and fluorescent lamp as a guide mark, projected on a convex mirror. The current position and heading direction of the mobile robot are obtained from the image of the guide mark. While the mobile robot travels to a goal position, the current position and heading direction of the mobile robot are updated continuously and the desired path and actual moving path are displayed on the monitor screen in real time. This proposed method eliminates the need to rotate the camera to track the guide mark, since a panoramic view of the surrounding area is available from the convex mirror, and natural guide marks such as usual florescent lamp on the ceiling or door frame can be used for navigation.

This paper presents a local obstacle avoidance method for indoor mobile robots using Lane method and velocity Space Command approach. The method locates local obstacles using the information form multi-sensors, such that ultrasonic sensor array and laser scanning sensor. The method uses lane method to determine optimum collision-free heading direction of a robot. Also, it deals with the robot motion dynamics problem to reduce some vibration and guarantee fast movement as well. It yields translational and rotational velocities required to avoid the detected obstacles and to keep the robot heading direction toward goal location as close as possible. For experimental verification of the method, a mobile robot driven by two AC servo motors, equipped with 24 ultrasonic sensor array and laser scanning sensor navigates using the method through a corridor cluttered with obstacle.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of visual properties on the human movement behavior experimentally and empirically using spatial analysis technique based on ecological perception theory. For the survey of choosing behaviors of heading direction in built environments, the experiment was conducted in which the subjects were made to choose moving directions in some spaces using the virtual environment simulation tool, and then comparative analysis was conducted on the interrelation between the experiment results and various visual properties in existing spatial analysis techniques based on ecological perception theory. As a result, the occlusivity of the isovist theory was found to be the most significant index in the human choice of heading direction, and the longest radial also showed somewhat significant effect on it.
