Salicornia europaea (glasswort) is succulent, annual, halophytic plant mainly distributed throughout reclaimed land or salt marsh. It has strong tolerance to salt so that it plays the part of the pioneer species in the first succession. According to domestic and foreign studies, S. europaea contains plenty of minerals and antioxidant in the body. Since people take note of an availableness of this plant as health diet, the natural growth sites are threatened. In addition to development of salt marsh and sea shore, imprudent harvest has a bad effect to S. europaea population maintenance. To seek ways to preserve the population of this plant, we carried out the continuity of seed germination and restoration test. Seokmo Island, Daebu Island, Youngjong Island and Sudokwon landfill in Korea are selected sites for research. Result of germination continuity shows that most S. europaea seeds germinate on March but no more after July. However the germination was occurred after that time in the greenhouse. So we concluded that no germination after July is a matter of environmental condition not the number of remaining seeds. Also germination was seldom occurred in the spot where seeds production was not happened. In result of continuity test of seed germination by soil depth, germination was occurred vigorously only in top soil. From these results, we note that most S. europaea germinate in the early spring, and germination is finished by July. And this rapid germination speed makes the number of seeds in soil seed bank rare. If a large number of S. europaea in some area are harvested after July, the number of this species will dramatically decrease in that area the following year. In Seokmo Island, we carried out reintroduction experiment by sowing S. europaea seeds. On the first year, a small number of S. europaea settled and they produced seeds successfully. On April 2010, the second year, we observed many S. europaea in seed sowing sites. And we found out that plowing is more efficient than treatment sea water for settlement of S. europaea.
Vegetable perilla, "Ipdlkkae 1"(Perilla frutescens var japonica Hara), was tested about the flowering and maturing responce in summer and winter. In summer season, it was researched about those responses according to the change of seeding date from May 15th to Oct. 15th at one month interval in the field. "Ipdlkkae 1" flowered Oct. 2nd under the day length of eleven hours and fourty-one minutes, compared with Sep. 6th (day length of twelve hours and fourty-three minutes) of "Yepsildlggae". And those responses showed that vegetable perilla was have to seeded before July 15th for two reason. The first is a unique response of perilla to day length. If perilla stay under short-day condition for some days, perilla will flower after four weeks. The second is a weather, especially frost and cold. In the test of latest seeding at Oct. 15th, the plants flowered more late than normal flowering period and they were not able to mature for frost of early winter. And this result showed that any other species, which has the characteristic of later flowering than that of "Ipdlkkae 1", could not able to mature in the field. In winter time, this species was tested about the same responses according to the change of short-day treatments. In the case of the test from May 1st (above fourteen hours day length), even if the test plants were stayed under short-day condition for more than 10 days, they were not able to mature, but flowerd. From the test of Apr. 15th, day length of thirteen hours, the plants were showed variable reaction to the short-day treatment. In this test, 11days for short-day treatment was a basic day to decide whether flowering was delayed or not. In the test from Apr. 1st, perilla seeds were able to harvest at least 5 days short-day treatment. In the final test from Mar. 15th, it had no need to take short-day treatment for harvesting of normal seeds, because the day length of that are twelve hours, which is an enough time to induce flowering and maturing, previously reported.
The higher sugar and lower starch in super sweet corn may be due to modified endosperm genes sh, bt series, but its seeds have major limiting factors causing low germination and low seedling vigor, This study was conducted to determine what measurable kernel characteristics during the grain tiling period might be more useful as a guide to optimize harvest date for good seed quality in hybrid super sweet corn production. Artificial crossing in super sweet corn hybrid (Chodangok 1) was made on the same day, and ears were harvested from 18 days to 53 days after pollination at weekly intervals. Kernel weight, moisture content, hardness, endosperm rate, seedling height and storage nutrients such as sugars, protein, starch, and germination rate were measured for the kernels at each harvest. Super sweet corn hybrid, Chodangok 1 presented satisfactory germination rate above 70% when harvested on 39 to 46 days after pollination. Its storage nutrients at that time were 23.7-24.2% in starch content 5.5-5.9% in total sugars, 38.9-46.6% in kernel moisture, and 62.7-64.2% in endosperm rate. Germination rate was extremely high when harvested on 39 days after pollination. The black layer of Chodangok 1 could not be used as an indicator for seed harvest. These results suggested that optimum harvest date seems to be 39 days, and kernel moisture and starch content could be used as indications of kernel maturity in deciding when to harvest fer good seed quality in super sweet corn.
This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and phytotoxic of crop desiccant treatments on the seed production of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) in Gimje and Buan, South Korea. Here, Italian ryegrass was treated 7, 10, and 14 days before harvest (DBH) and no difference in fresh weight, 1000-seed weight, germination rate, and seed yield was observed compared to the untreated control in the standard dose and double dose for seven DBH. However, the standard dose and double dose on the 10 DBH and 14 DBH had a lower 1000-seed weight, germination rate, and seed yield compared to the untreated control. In pesticide persistence analysis, the permitted standards were not exceeded in the seeds and straw according to the treatment time and concentration. These results suggest that the treatment effect and stability of Italian ryegrass can be expected if treated within seven DBH. However, it seems that crop desiccants should be used after considering grain ripening and weather to minimize loss of seeds.
Seed germination and dormancy of three green manure seeds such as hairy vetch, crimson clover and narrow-leaved vetch (Vicia angustifolia L.) produced in Milyang, southern part of Korea were investigated to provide a basic information on the stability of seedling establishment in green manure seeds. In addition, the effect of seed storage duration on the germinability of imported hairy vetch and crimson seeds was also investigated. To determine the seed maturity time of three green manure seeds, the seeds were harvested manually at May 25, May 30, and June 4, and the 100-seed weight, germinability and percentage of hard seed were evaluated. Freshly harvested seeds of three green manure crops were strongly dormant because of hard seed coat. Germination percentage of the three green manure crops varied depending on the seed harvest time ranging from 30 - 52% in hairy vetch, 16 - 35% in crimson clover and 2 - 61% in V. angustifolia, respectively. Of the three crops, crimson clover and V. angustifolia matured early on May 30 to June 4 (around 35 to 40 days after flower) but hairy vetch seed did not mature until June 4 based on the seed germinability. The matured seed of crimson clover and V. angustifolia germinated less than 20% while scarification on seed coat significantly overcome the innate dormancy. On the other hand, the seed germination of hairy vetch and crimson clover was lower under dark than in the presence of light. The germination percentage of the imported hairy vetch and crimson clover seeds showed high with 77 - 79%, 94 - 95%, respectively, but the seed germination significantly declined by 21 - 32%, 30 - 40% after one-year of storage under natural conditions. The seeds germinated only 8 - 13% for hairy vetch but crimson clover did not germinate at all after two years storage. These results indicate V. angustifolia and crimson clover mature at May 30 to June 4 but hairy vetch did not. The imported hairy vetch and crimson clover seeds should be used within one-year after import for stable seedling establishment in green manure-rice cultivation cropping system.
Flowering characteristics and optimal harvest time for seed of wasabi variety. Daruma, were investigated from Dec. 1995 to June 1996 in film house of Suwon. The number of peduncle was $10.2{\pm}2.29$ and most of the peduncle emerged between Jan. 20 and Feb. 10. Average peduncle length was $124{\pm}29.60cm$ and the peduncle grew most rapidly in the middle of march. Flowering started on Jan. 27 and lasted until June 4 with a peak at march 21 and flowering period was $99{\pm}21.32$ days. Flowers which bloomed later than the middle of March set seed but those bloomed earlier became sterile because days with minimum temperature below freezing occurred until the middle of March. Maturing period was $37.5{\pm}2.60$ days and total seed set was $43.2{\pm}8.77%$ in the natural culture condition. Optimal harvest time for seed was the last ten days of May and seed yield per $m^2$ was $79.0{\pm}19.94g%$(11,177 seeds).

Harvest time is one of the most important determining factors of seed quality, especially for species that produce seeds over irregular and long-term periods, such as Larix kaempferi. A cone collection plan must be established to increase seed production efficiency and stable mass production. We investigated seed qualities such as seed efficiency, germination rate, and T50 (germination speed), with 7 or 8 cone collection times at a clonal seed orchard of L. kaempferi in Chungju between 2021 and 2022. A multivariate analysis was then performed for the collected data. In early August, decreases in the moisture contents and browning of cones were observed. These were followed by a decrease in germination rate, with a peak at the end of September, but no clear trend was observed. The later the cones were harvested, the better the seed vigor (T50). However, the seed yield and efficiency decreased owing to increases in seed scattering and the number of insect-damaged seeds. As a result, the optimal time of seed harvest for the seed orchard was in early August. To produce uniform seedlings, insect damage must be reduced through timely control and harvest cones in early September. This shows that the degree of browning and moisture content of cones can be used as indicators of the timing of cone collection in L. kaempferi seed orchards.

The field trial was performed to evaluate the rice growth and yield in different direct seeding methods after Italian Ryegrass Harvest The required time for seed emergence was for 7 ~ 8days in the tested direct seeding methods and there was high in seedling establishment in order of wet hill-seeding with iron-coated seeds > water seeding with iron-coated seeds > wet hill-seeding with soil coverage with pregerminated seeds. The rice plant height was shorter in the tested direct seeding methods than that of machine transplanting until 45day after seeding but there was not significant difference in terms of statistical analysis at 63day after seeding. The growth of tiller number in the rice plant was high in water seeding with iron-coated seeds and wet hill-seeding with soil coverage and low in wet hill-seeding with iron-coated seeds compared to machine transplanting. The yield component in the tested direct seeding methods was not significant difference in terms of statistical analysis. The milled rice yield in the tested direct seeding methods was higher 2 ~ 8% being with 4.94 ~ 5.24t/ha than that of machine transplanting but there was not significant difference in terms of statistical analysis. The percentage of head rice was low in the tested direct seeding methods compared to machine transplanting. The weedy rice was not occurred in the tested rice cultivation methods. In conclusion the direct seeding method would be recommended to be a suitable to in following by Italian ryegrass harvesting in southern area of Korea in terms of reduction in production cost and high income basis for rice growing farmers.
Recently in Korea, soybean harvesting has been delayed due to rainfall during the harvesting season, resulting in a reduction in yield and seed quality. This study was conducted to analyze the changes in yield and seed quality during delayed harvest with rainfall treatment using different harvesting methods, including field harvesting and polyethylene film covering after cutting fully-matured soybean plants (PE covering after cutting), with two major Korean soybean cultivars (Glycine max L), Pungsannamulkong and Daewonkong. The shattering rate of Pungsannamulkong, which is higher than that of Daewonkong, increased up to 41.8% when the harvest was delayed for 40 days without rainfall treatment by harvesting with PE covering after cutting. The weight of 100 seeds tended to decrease slightly as harvesting was delayed. When Daewonkong was harvested using the PE covering after cutting method with rainfall treatment, the yield decreased to the lowest level with a 0.8 kg ha-1 daily reduction rate. Pungsannamulkong showed the lowest yield when harvested using PE covering after cutting without rainfall treatment with a 3.4 kg ha-1 daily reduction rate. The infected seed rate increased according to the harvest delay in both cultivars, and significant differences were observed according to rainfall treatment and harvesting method. The germination rate was maintained above 95% even after 40 days of delayed harvest if there was no rainfall treatment. However, with rainfall treatment, the germination rate was significantly lowered as harvesting time was delayed. In the field harvesting with rainfall treatment, the germination rate decreased to 77.2% for Daewonkong and 76.5% for Pungsannamulkong after 40 days of harvest delay. For the 100-seed weight, effects of individual treatments and interactions between treatments were not observed. In contrast, the effect of interactions between treatments on the shattering rate was significant in both cultivars, indicating that the shattering rate had the greatest impact on the yield changes during delayed harvest.

This experiment was conducted to investigate an optimum harvest time for hairy vetch (HV) seed production. The seeds were harvested at 5 times, 35, 42, 48, 54, and 58 days after flowering (DAF) in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, 3 times of harvest, 39, 49, and 53 DAF were done at Suwon, middle part of Korea. HV plants were harvested and threshed by manually at each time. Seed yield, yield components, germination rate, hard seed rate, and viviparous germination rate were investigated. The highest seed yield represented 54 DAF in 2009, 42 DAF in 2010, and 49 DAF in 2011. When the triticale, HV support plant, comes to early lodging, the time of highest yield was delayed. 1,000-seed weight linearly increased from 35 DAF to 54 DAF. The later harvested seed showed a trend of increasing germination and hard seed ratio. However, viviparous germination had occurred because of in rainy season. In conclusion, it was presumed that an optimum harvest time for safe seed production in HV should be during 42 DAF ~ 54 DAF before the rainy season considering seed yield, 1,000-seed weight and germination.
