  • Power transformers are applied throughout the power system to connect systems of different voltage to one another. Since a ratio differential relay offers high sensitivity in detection of internal faults in power transformers, it is widely used in the main protection system. The use of nonlinear devices such as rectifiers and other devices utilizing solid state switching have been increased in industry during recent years. For nonlinear loads, the load current is not proportional to the instantaneous voltage. This situation creates harmonic distortion on the system. The harmonic could differential relay misoperation if not recognized. This paper aims at analyzing and probing into the influences of harmonics on a ratio differential relay for power transformer protection.

  • The spin valve tunneling magnetoresistance (SV-TMR) sensor performance is analyzed using Stoner-Wohlfarth model for the detection of eddy current signals in nondestructive testing applications. The SV-TMR response in terms of the applied AC magnetic field dominantly generates the second harmonic amplitude in hard axis direction. The second harmonic eddy current signal detection using SV-TMR sensor shows higher performance than that of the coil sensor at lower frequencies. The SV-TMR sensor with high sensitivity gives a good solution to improve the low frequency performance in comparison with the inductive coil sensors. Therefore, the low frequency eddy current techniques based on SV-TMR sensors are specially useful in the detection of hidden defects, and it can be applied to detect the deeply embedded flaws or discontinuities in the conductive materials.

  • In speech signal processing, it Is very important to detect the pitch exactly in speech recognition, synthesis and analysis. but, it is very difficult to pitch detection from speech signal because of formant and transition amplitude affect. therefore, in this paper, we proposed a pitch detection using the spectrum flattening techniques. Spectrum flattening is to eliminate the formant and transition amplitude affect. In time domain, positive center clipping is process in order to emphasize pitch period with a glottal component of removed vocal tract characteristic. And rough formant envelope is computed through peak-fitting spectrum of original speech signal in frequency domain. As a results, well get the flattened harmonics waveform with the algebra difference between spectrum of original speech signal and smoothed formant envelope. After all, we obtain residual signal which is removed vocal tract element The performance was compared with LPC and Cepstrum, ACF 0wing to this algorithm, we have obtained the pitch information improved the accuracy of pitch detection and gross error rate is reduced in voice speech region and in transition region of changing the phoneme.

  • When ultrasound propagates to a crack, transmitted and reflected waves are generated. These waves have useful information for the detection of the crack lying in a structure. When a crack is under residual stress, crack surfaces will contact each other and a closed crack is formed. For closed cracks, the fundamental component of the reflected and transmitted waves will be weak, and as such it is not easy to detect them. In this case, higher harmonic components will be useful. In this paper, nonlinear characteristic of a closed crack is modeled by a continuum material having a tensile-compressive unsymmetry, and the amplitude of the second harmonic wave was obtained by spectrum analysis. Variation of the second harmonic component depending on the nonlinearity of the inclusion was investigated. Two-dimensional plane strain model is considered, and finite element software ABAQUS/Explicit is used.

  • This paper presents a new control method of single-phase active power filter (APF) for the compensation of harmonic current components in nonlinear loads. To facilitate the possibility of complex calculation for harmonic current detection of the single phase, a single-phase system that has two phases was constructed by including an imaginary second-phase giving time delay to the load current. The imaginary phase, which lagged the load current T/4 (Here T is the fundamental cycle) is used in the conventional method. But in this proposed method, the new signal as the second phase is delayed by the filter. Because this control method is applied to a single-phase system, an instantaneous calculation was developed by using the rotating reference frames synchronized to source-frequency rather than by applying instantaneous reactive power theory that uses the conventional fixed reference frames. The control scheme of single-phase APF for the current source with R-L loads is applied to a laboratory prototype to verify the proposed control method.

  • We present a new procedure to evaluate the residual life of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel from reversible magnetic permeability. The method is based on the existence of first harmonics in the differential magnetization around the coercive force. The apparatus is based on the detection of the voltage induced in a coil using a lock-in amplifier tuned to the frequency of the exciting coil. Results obtained for the first harmonics and Vickers hardness on aged samples show that the peak interval of reversible permeability and Vickers hardness decrease as aging time increases. The correlation between Vickers hardness and the peak interval of the reversible permeability may be used to evaluate the residual life of 1Cr-lMo-0.25V steel, nondestructively.

  • When ultrasound propagates to a crack, transmitted and reflected waves are generated. These waves have useful information for the detection of the crack lying in a structure. In this paper, using finite element analysis, displacements round a inclined crack were obtained for 4 different inclination angles. Fourier transformation is applied to the results to research the frequency characteristics depending on the various locations around the crack. 2-dimensional plane stress model is considered, and finite element software ABAQUS/Explicit is used.

  • Power quality (PQ) problems are becoming a big issue, since delicate complex electronic devices are widely used. We present a new denoising technique using discrete wavelet transform (DWT), where a modified correlation thresholding is used in order to reliably detect the PQ disturbances. We consider various PQ disturbances on the basis of IEEE-1159 standard over noisy environments, including voltage swell, voltage sag, transient, harmonics, interrupt, and their combinations. These event signals are decomposed using DWT for the detection of disturbances. We then evaluate the PQ disturbance detection ratio of the proposed denoising scheme over Gaussian noise channels. Simulation results also show that the proposed scheme has an improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) over existing scheme.

  • This paper describes the detection algorithm which can distinguish series arcing signal from voltage harmonics or noises produced by the operation of non-linear loads. A high pass filter with the cutoff frequency of 3 kHz is designed and it can attenuate power frequency signal to 80 dB. Series arcing phenomena is simulated to an incandescent lamp controlled by a dimmer. From the experimental results, it is confirmed that the amplitude of the filter output voltage varies at random during series arcing but the signal generated by non-linear loads appears on a regular basis. We proposed a series arcing detection algorithm using the chaotic nature of voltage signal.
