Impact-bouncing height of steel balls dropped from 1m height on various floor materials were measured to evaluate impact-bouncing characteristics depending on floor materials and the effect of these properties on walkability and fatigue of humanbody. Stone and tile finished concrete floor showed the highest bouncing height of around 70%, and soil showed the lowest bouncing height of around 3%. The second highest bouncing height was about 40% which corresponded to terazo finished concrete floor and about twice as high as the bouncing height on concrete floor without finishing. The impact-bouncing height could be lowered to 15~20% by using gum tile on concrete floor. Steel showed similar bouncing height to concrete floor, and wood-based materials showed the second lowest bouncing height next to soil. Among wood-based materials, hardwood species having higher specific gravities showed relatively high bouncing height of 8~24%, softwood species having low specific gravities showed relatively lower bouncing height of 5~18%, and wood composites showed bouncing height of 8~18%. Among all the materials used in this study, wood-based floor materials corresponded to the bouncing height of 10~15% which is considered to be best for humanbody. Surface painting on wood-based materials increased the bouncing height, and the number of bouncing of steel balls after dropping from 1m height increased as the bouncing height increased.
The purpose of this study was to examines the burning rate of fire retardant treated wood in the cone heater with a one-dimensional integral model. The wood samples used in this study were four species. The species of woods are Redwood, White oak, Douglas fir and Maple. Each sample was nominally 50mm thick and 100mm square. Samples were exposed to a range of incident heat fluxes 10 to $35kW/m^2$ using the cone heater. A one-dimension integral model has been used to predict burning rate, heat of gasification, flame heat fluxes, charring rate and char depth of samples. As a result measurement of mass loss rate, softwoods(Redwood and Douglas fir) has relatively low value than those for hardwoods(White oak and Maple). Average charring rate of woods in case of fire retardant treatment showed reduction effect of 41.29%, 50.00%, 48.18% and 60.82% for Redwood, Douglas fir, White fir and Maple, respectively. Almost all the predictions from integral model showed faster charring than those measured. Average difference between predictions and experimental data was 16%, 9.5% and 11.8% for N, F1 and F2 respectively. Water-soluble fire retardant used in this study find out more effect in hardwood than softwood from the result of measurement of mass loss rate and average charring rate.

The investigation of the formation of organic sulfur compounds (i.e., odor species), mainly methyl mercaptan and demethyl suifide, during kraft pulping has been conducted, in which both hardwood and softwood species were used. It was discovered that there is an organic sulfur compounds formation phase transition point with respect to delignification extent. The transition point occurs at a kappa number of approximately 35 and 20 for softwoods and hardwoods, respectively. The results also showed that both low sulfidity and anthraquinone (AQ) addition are helpful to control the formation of theses organic sulfur compounds during kraft pulping. Whereas Hexenuronic acid (HexA) has contribution to Kappa number, the extended delignification not only lead to low pulp yield, but also be adverse to odor control. A significant in-digester odor reduction can be achieved if the pulping is to be terminated before phase transition point and combined with AQ addition.
Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii Henry is a short and creeping evergreen shrub which reaches about 60 cm in height and only occurs in the northeast Asia and in the top of high mountains over the Korea. The Korea Forest Service protects it strictly by law since J. chinensis var. sargentii is an eccentric plant and possibly may be exterminated soon in Korea. This study was carried out to develop the propagation technique by cutting for conservation of genetic resources of J. chinensis var. sargentii. The rooting responses of branch cuttings, obtained from hard(May) and semi-hard wood shoots (August) to four growth regulators, namely, IAA, IBA, NAA and Rooton(exceptionally powder method) applied at various concentrations(0, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 $mgL^{-1}$) were examined in mixed soil media. Rooting rate showed significant difference between cutting times, among kinds and among concentrations of growth regulators. The optimum cutting time was April to May in hardwood cutting. The application of IBA 1000 $mgL^{-1}$(rooting rate : 36.4%) was most effective in callus formation and rooting of cutting. Relatively, rooting of cutting of the control taken in May was 30.4%. Root characteristics such as number, length and diameter of root were not significantly affected by kinds and concentrations of growth regulators in hardwood cutting.
This study was carried out to identify the differences of some macro and microanatomical features between Eunsasi poplar (Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee) and Konara oak (Quercus serrata Thunb.). Anatomical features such as vessel and fiber diameter, cross sectional area of ray parenchyma and endwall pit aperture diameter in ray parenchyma were compared. Differences of anatomical features between two species were found statistically significant. Earlywood vessel diameter in poplar and oak increased from pith to bark while it was found almost stable in latewood. Fiber diameter in poplar was higher than oak fiber. Ray area and the pit aperture diameter in endwall of ray parenchyma were found higher in oak than those in poplar.
Tests of notched specimens of ten hardwood species in the LR and LT systems were conducted to investigate fracture toughness($K_{IC}$) and effective moduli of elasticity(MOE). $K_{IC}$ values were examined in relation to MOR, MOE, specific gravity of clear wood specimens. It was found in both systems that there were significant relationship between $K_{IC}$ and MOR, $K_{IC}$ and specific gravity. To predict the effective MOE of notched specimen from MOE of clear wood, it was analyzed by using equvalent cross-section method. In LR system, the observed values were similar to the predicted values, but in LT system, both were not agreed as the ovserved values were smaller. However. the results were shown that this method was avaliable to predict the effective MOE of notched specimens.

Nalita wood(Trema orientalis) is one of the fastest growing woods in the world. It may be a viable species for pulpwood. The physical, chemical and morphological properties of Nalita were studied. The total lignin, pentosan and holocellulose content in Nalita wood were 24.7%, 22% and 81.2%, respectively. Its fiber length was about 0.92 mm, which are comparable to Acacia mangium. Nitrobenzene oxidation of Nalita wood meal indicated that the guaciayl and syringyl unit were the major constituent of Nalita lignin. Nalita produced 50% pulp yield at Kappa number 21 in soda-anthraquinone process. The strength properties of Nalita pulp were comparable to other tropical hardwood pulp. At $40_{\circ}$ SR, the breaking length, burst index, tear index and total energy absorption were 6000 m, $3.5kPa{\cdot}m^2/g\;and\;7.0mN{\cdot}m^2/g\;and\;75J/m^2$, respectively.
Wood identification was conducted for the 8 Neolithic charcoals excavated at Giheung Nongseori Ruins through scanning electron microscopy. They were all identified as hardwood: 6 and 1 were found to be Prinus section and Cerris section of subgenus Lepidobalanus under genus Quercus, respectively, and the remaining 1 to be genus Betula. This species composition was thought to indicate the temperate to warm temperate climate region.
The reconstituted tobacco leaves(RTL) playa major part in the control of the low density and tar cigarette. Reconstituted tobacco manufactured by the papermaking process has much higher filling power than homogenized tobacco manufactured by slurry and rolling process. Fragile reconstituted tobaccos are liable to lead to small particles detrimental for filling power so they must be properly flexible. This work was conducted to determine the effect of CaCO$_3$ addition in paper-making process on the filling power and the flexibility of the reconstituted tobacco and to obtain the fundamental informations for improving the quality of domestic reconstituted tobacco. We analyzed the wood fiber species, the filler level, the fiber length, the fineness level and observed the surface of the RTL. From the obtained results, we could determine that foreign reconstituted tobacco was manufactured by blending softwood with hardwood and over 8% of calcium carbonate at the addition level. The domestic RTL has much higher fine fiber level by 23.2 % than that of foreign, so the refining treatment process and the condition must be reoptimized for the improvement of RTL quality.
Utilizing chi-square test statistics, inter-species association and covariation were analyzed for the 37 woody plant species in a deciduous forest dominated by Quercus mongolica and Q. variabilis. within 50 temporarily established $20m{\times}20m$ square quadrats, the association for each pair of species was presented based on the presence-absence parameters. Acer palmatum had significant positive association with Acer mono and Kalopanax pictus, but negative association with Pinus densiflora. Other positively associated species pairs were Prunus sargentii-Macckia amurensis, Quercus serrata-Kalopanax pictus, Symplocos chinensis var. pilosa-Euonymus oxyphyllus, and Ulmus davidiana var. japonica-Lindera obtusiloba. The covariation far each pair of species was evaluated based on the quantitative measures, density and basal area. Overall results showed that the association and covariation values among species generally agreed with each other. Because covariation was calculated by density and basal area of the tallied species in the sample plots, the number of species pairs of covariation tended to be greater than those of association. Especially, Pinus densiflora, considered to be pioneer species in the successional stage, had negative covariation with most of climax species. These ecological information could be applied to silvicultural practices, such as ecosystem classification, establishment of mixed hardwood forest, and tending operations for marking crop trees and desirable species.
