The neodymium magnet inserted mold was proposed to orient magneto-responsible particles efficiently. The anisotropic magneto-rheological elastomer(MRE) was prepared using the new mold and the optimum amounts of the particles was 30 vol.%. As the orientation of particles was increased, the tensile strength of MRE was decreased, while the hardness of MRE was increased. It was found that the MRE containing 30 vol.% of magneto-responsible particles showed the maximum magneto-rheological effect. The ratio of shear modulus shift was 59% at the input current of 3 A. The transmissibility of MRE was decreased with increasing the input current and loading amounts of magneto-responsible particles. Therefore, the damping property of MRE could be improved by preparing the anisotropic MRE.
The mechanical properties (tensile strength, 100% modulus and hardness) of the urethane elastomers prepared from hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB), several low molecular weight diols (ethylene glycol, 1, 3-propane diol, 1,4-butane diol, 1,5-pentane diol and 1,6-hexane diol) and two kinds of diisocyanates(TDI: toluene diisocyanate, IPDI: isophorone diisomechanical properties were enhanced for the increases of the concentrations of the urethane group, as predicted. In case of TDI, when the mechanical properties of the elastomers were plotted patterns were observed, which can be explained by hydrogen bondings depending on the number of the methylene carbons. But the mechanical properties of the elastomers derived from IPDI had decreasing curves against the number of methylene carbons in low molecular weight diols, without the characteristic zigzag patterns.

The stabilizer bar mounted on the vehicle underbody makes for a more comfortable ride by holding the vehicle itself when the vehicle is cornering. Stabilizer bars are available in two types: solid and tube. To lighten the weight of the vehicle, and owing to weight reduction requirements, tubular stabilizer bars are increasingly being used. Tubular stabilizer bars can be fabricated to be over 34% lighter than solid bars, but the lifetime of the product tends to decrease rapidly as the weight ratio increases. However, the durability can be improved by utilizing high-strength and high-hardness materials for the stabilizer bar or by improving the shot peening method.
The strain fields due to precipitates, especially S-phase $(Al_2CuMg)$ particles in Al-2.5Cu-1.5Mg wt.% alloy were first investigated with Large Angle Convergent Beam Electron Diffraction (LACBED) method. The work involves LACBED pattern simulations to estimate possibly the strength of the strain fields. To do this the morphology of S-particle was optimized as a cylindrical shape with $a_s$ axis, and the displacement vector of strain fields was assumed to be perpendicular to $a_s$ axis. With this simple model the reasonable fittings between the observed patterns of the strain fields and simulations were obtained. And in the early aging stage of the alloy the significant strain fields were not observed. As a result of this study it is expected that the strain fields due to S-phase precipitates in the stage with maximum hardness would make a complex networks to possibly contribute to hardiness of the alloy.

The mechanical characteristics of gamma-ray irradiated UHMWPE specimens were investigated under various heat treatment conditions. The heat treatment was performed in the range of annealing and remelting temperatures. The annealing treatment below the temperature of $130^{\circ}C$ hardly induced changes in the tensile strength, the strain at the failure and the hardness. However the remelting treatment above $140^{\circ}C$ deteriorated those mechanical properties. It was shown in an FTIR analysis that the annealing treatment caused some oxidation of free radicals created by the pretreatment of the irradiation. These quantitative data represented by the behavior of mechanical properties might be used as basic informations for the design and analysis of various artificial joints.

The aim of this study was to investigate the fluoride release and some mechanical properties including 3-point bending strength, amount of abrasion, surface hardness, water sorption/solubility and cytotoxicity of the newly developed composite resins containing 8, 16, 24 wt% $SrF_2$ glass filler (VF8, VF16, VF24) and four commercially available composite resins, Heliomolar(HE), Verdonfil(VE), Z100(ZH) and Aelitefil(AE). To investigate cytotoxic effect, agar overlay assay was done. Amount of fluoride released into distilled water was measured over a 62-days period from VF8, VF16, VF24 and HE. Results were as follows: 1. Experimental composite resins showed similar mechanical properties to commercial composite resins, but 3-point bending strength and surface hardness of experimental composite resins were inferior to ZH. 2. Over a 62-day Period, the amount of fluoride released was ordered: VF24>VF16>VF8>HE. In experimental composite resins, the amount of fluoride released was 9-23 times greater than HE and seemed to be proportional to the content of $SrF_2$ glass filler. 3. Experimental composite resins and all control composite resins showed mild cytotoxicity. This study showed significantly greater fluoride release from newly developed composite resins than control(HE) and addition of $SrF_2$ glass filler did not decrease mechanical properties or increase cytotoxicity of composite resin. The results from this study imply that newly developed composite resin have adequate mechanical properites, mild cytotoxicity and some potential for secondary caries prevention.
The studied Nangsan area is widely covered by the Jurassic biotite granodiorite, which is mainly light grey in color and medium-grained in texture. Results of the regional fracture pattern analysis for the granodiorite body are as follows. Strike directions of fractures show three dominant sets in terms of frequency order. The sets are in an order of a (1) $N80^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}E$ (1st-order)>(2) $N70^{\circ}{\sim}80^{\circ}E$ (2nd-order)>(3) $NS{\sim}N10^{\circ}E$ (3rd-order). Spacings of the fractures are mostly predominant in less than 200 cm. Therefore, the granodiorite of the area has more potential for non-dimensional stones than dimension ones. And orientations of vertical quarrying planes can be also divided into two groups in terms of frequency $N14^{\circ}W{\sim}N16^{\circ}E$ (1st-order) and (2) $N78^{\circ}E{\sim}N88^{\circ}E$ (2nd-order). The orientations of the two groups are more or less different from those of the regional fracture patterns. These can be mainly attributed to the preferred orientations of microcrack developed in the quarries. Of physical properties, specific gravity, absorption ratio, porosity, compressive strength, tensile strength and abrasive hardness are 2.65, 0.28%, 0.73%, $1,628kg/cm^2,\;100kg/cm^2$ and 31, respectively. Contrary to the porosity, both granites of the Nangsan and Sogrisan areas show almost similar values of the abrasive hardness. These can be explained by the differences of Qz+Af modes, which can be regarded as an index for abrasive resistance. Meanwhile, it is anticipated that comprehensive understanding of the orientations of vertical quarrying planes and characteristics of various physical properties will be utilized as an important information for stone resources.
This study has investigated the effects of aging treatment on thc nlechanical propcrries of blg-iiAl-x%nix - 0.1.2) alloys fabricated by the squeeze castmg process. The microstructurcs of as-squeeze cast were composed of pro eurectic $\alpha$ magnesium solid solution, super saturated $\alpha$ solid solution and $\beta(Mg_{17}AI_{12}$) compund. Agcd at both $200^{\circ}C$ and $240^{\circ}C$, Mg--6AixZn alloys showed the peak hardness due to the formation of $\beta(Mg_{17}AI_{12}$) precipitates. The tiiscontinuous precipitates of the lamella r\.pe are predominant at $200^{\circ}C$ aging tredrment. tvhilc. the finely dispersed continu ous precipitates were major type at $240^{\circ}C$ treatment. Mg-- GAI-xZn a1loi.s fabricated hy the squeeze casting process had the hetter combination of tensile strength and elongation compared to the conventionally cast alloys. As increascci zinc: contents. the tensile strength was increased 11y the soiid solutirin strengthening effect of zinc,.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the cold reduction rate and an ultrasonic fatigue test (UFT) on the fatigue behaviors of STS 304L. The tensile strength, yield strength, hardness value and fatigue limit in the UFT fatigue test linearly increased as thickness decreased from 1.5 mm to 1.1 mm, as the cold reduction rate of STS 304L increased. As a result of the UFT fatigue test (R = -1) of four specimens, the fatigue limit of the S-N curve formed a knee point in the region of $10^6$, and the 2nd fatigue limit caused by giga cycle fatigue did not appeared. In the case of t = 1.1 mm, the highest fatigue limit was 345 MPa, which was 64.3% higher than the original material (t = 1.5 mm). As a result of the UFT fatigue test of STS 304L, many small surface cracks occurred, grown, coalesced while tearing.

Seven types of tests were conducted to experimentally evaluate the material properties of ultral-thick (or 120mm-thick) SM490TMC plate. The investigation of through-thickness properties was among the most significant considerations. All chemical and mechanical test results showed the through-thickness homogeneity as required and conformed to the KS(Korean industrial Standards), although the thickness was 1.5 times thicker than the thickness limit (80mm) imposed by Steel Structure Design Code. No reduction in the yield strength of 120mm-thick SM490TMC plate is recommended for design.
