  • The 2-step low temperature plasma processes (the combined carburizing and post-nitriding) were carried out for improving both the surface hardness and corrosion resistance of AISI 316L stainless steel. The effects of processing time and temperature on the surface properties during nitriding step were investigated. The expanded austenite (${\gamma}_N$) was formed on all of the treated surface. The thickness of ${\gamma}_N$ was increased up to about $20{\mu}m$ and the thickness of entire hardened layer was determined to be about $40{\mu}m$. The surface hardness reached up to $1,200HV_{0.1}$ which is about 5 times higher than that of untreated sample ($250HV_{0.1}$). The thickness of ${\gamma}_N$ and concentration of N on the surface were increased with increasing processing time and temperature. The corrosion resistance in 2-step low temperature plasma processed austenitic stainless steels was enhanced more than that in the untreated austenitic stainless steels due to a high concentration of N on the surface.

  • Recently, as the interest in improving energy efficiency has grown, the demand for vehicle and machine parts that are resistant in high temperature corrosive conditions and abrasive environments has increased. Pack chromizing treatment of sintered steels is a profitable method that satisfies both corrosion resistance and low friction properties. Since austenitic stainless steels have good corrosion resistance but low mechanical hardness, if they are replaced by sintered steel parts with pack chromizing treatment, all the desirable properties such as low price, easy molding, high hardness, low frictional coefficient, and high corrosion resistance, can be obtained. The higher corrosion resistance of the chromized parts over that of the austenitic stainless steels was acquired by coating chromium carbides and a thin chromium oxides layer on the surface. Moreover, the surface morphology of chromized parts, which were composed of chromium rich phases and hardened chromium carbides by diffusing and alloying, had a peak-and-valley shape so that the dimple effect by the wrinkled morphology and high hardness induced a low friction coefficient.

  • In view of the increasing utility of concrete as a construction material, the major challenge is to improve the quality of construction. Nowadays the common problem faced by many of the concrete plants is the shortage of river sand as fine aggregate material. This led to the utilization of locally available materials from quarries as fine aggregate. With the percentage of fines present in Crushed Rock Fines (CRF)or crushed sand is more compared to river sand, it shows a better performance in terms of fresh properties. The present study deals with the formulation of SCC mix design based on the chosen plastic viscosity of the mix and the measured plastic viscosity of cement pastes incorporating supplementary cementitious materials with CRF and river sand as a fine aggregate. Four different combinations including two binary and one ternary mix are adopted for the current study. Influence of plastic viscosity of the mix on the fresh and hardened properties are investigated for SCC mixes with varying water to cement ratios. It is observed that for an increasing plastic viscosity of the mix, slump flow, T500 and J-ring spread increased but V-funnel and L-box decreased. Compressive, split tensile and flexural strengths decreased with the increase in plastic viscosity.

  • The use of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) as a substitute for natural aggregates in new concrete produces both economic and environmental advantages. Most of the RCA applications for pavements have been primarily applied to support layers for roads and airfields. This paper summarizes a work completed at the University of Illinois in partnership with the O'Hare Modernization Program to examine the effect of coarse and fine RCA on the concrete's fresh and hardened properties for airfield rigid pavement applications. Ten different RCA concrete mixtures were prepared with the incorporation of different percentages of RCA fines as well as replacement of cement with high volume percentages of supplementary cementitious materials such as Class C fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag to improve the workability and long-term properties of RCA concrete. All the mixes on this stage included 100% recycled coarse aggregates and the Two-Stage Mixing Approach was used as a mixing procedure. Based on the results obtained in the research, mixes with high percentages of recycled fine and coarse aggregates could be used for construction of airfield concrete pavements in conjunction with supplementary cementitious materials

  • Acrylic resins containing tertiary amine were synthesized by a radical polymerization of monomers including n-butyl acrylate (BA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), n-butyl methacrylate (BMA) and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), and diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) containing tertiary amine. Synthesized acrylic resins were applied to develope coatings of acrylic resins containing tertiary amine. And ${\gamma}$-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) or ${\gamma}$-glycidoxypropyl triethoxysilane (GPTES) was used as hardener. Developed coatings were white colored ones to use titanium dioxide and were hardened with hardener for measuring their physical properties. Measured physical properties were basic properties, adhesivity and weatherability. As a result, developed acrylic resins coatings containing tertiary amine showed excellent adhesivity on various substrates and also showed the same result on weatherability on dry weather condition.

  • The high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composite (HPFRCC) controls the cracking development of the structure by inducing micro-cracking and strain hardening behavior after the initial cracking under the tensile conditions. Although, in Korea, the research about manufacturing the single-fiber reinforced cementitious composite or the mechanical properties of hardened status has been conducted, the research to apply the HPFRCC with multi-fiber is not sufficient. Hence, in this research, considering the workability and economic aspect for practical applications, the engineering properties of HPFRCC with combined long steel fiber (SL) and long organic fiber (OL) are evaluated such as workability and strength. As a result of evaluating the engineering properties of HPFRCC, the most favorable performance was obtained when the mixture contained 1.5% of combined SL and OL.

  • Recently, many research groups have studied on the epoxy-based multifunctional electrolyte to develop the structural composite bearing high mechanical properties without sacrificing the ionic conductivity at the same time. The studies on the optimal content and material selection for structural electrolyte have been published, while its curing behavior has not much analyzed yet. In this study, epoxy-based structural electrolyte containing solid electrolyte was prepared by varying the curing temperature and time. In addition, the ionic conductivities and mechanical properties of specimens were measured. We also find out the optimal hardening condition where the epoxy domain enables to be hardened within the range of temperature at which the thermal decomposition of electrolyte does not occur. Finally, we propose the multifunctional structural electrolyte showing achievable electrical and mechanical properties (282 MPa and $9{\times}10^{-6}S/cm@25^{\circ}C$).

  • The microstructural characteristics and low temperature tensile properties between $25^{\circ}C$ and $-196^{\circ}C$ for as-welded and age hardened specimen by using Al 5083-H321 for base metal, 5083-5356 and 5083-4043 weldments have been investigated. The hardness of 5083-5356 weldment decreases with aging treatment, whereas the weld region of 5083-4043 weldment shows remarkable increase in hardness after aging due to the precipitation of fine Si particle at the grain boundaries and interiors. Low temperature tensile properties of 5083 AI base metal, 5083-5356 and 5083-4043 weldments appear to be the increment of tensile strengths and elongations at the room temperature and $-196^{\circ}C$, while the decrement of tensile properties around $-50^{\circ}C$ is shown. Through the observation of fine serration to fracture in the stress-strain curve and tensile fractography, the increment of localized deformation leading to promote the neck initiation and the increment of the dimple size cause to decrease in tensile strengths and elongations around $-50^{\circ}C$. For the tensile specimen of the 5083 base metal, 5083-5356 and 5083-4043 weldments, the reason to increase in elongation after solution and aging treatment is the diminishment of fine pit, the resolution of Mg into the matrix and the spheridization of the eutectic Si.

  • PURPOSES : In this study, wasted vinyl aggregate, which possesses better thermal properties than natural aggregate, was used in cement concrete mixture to develop more economical concrete with thermal insulation and freeze prevention effects. METHODS : Slump and air content of the fresh concrete, which substituted its 0%, 5%, and 10% of coarse aggregate with wasted vinyl aggregate, were measured. Compressive strength, Poisson's ratio, elastic modulus, and splitting tensile strength of hardened concrete were measured by laboratory tests. Thermal properties of concrete such as coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, and specific heat were also measured according to replacement ratio of wasted vinyl aggregate. Finally, the thermal insulation and freeze prevention effectiveness of the concrete mixed with wasted vinyl aggregate was confirmed through finite element analysis of road pavement crossing above concrete box culvert made from wasted vinyl aggregate. RESULTS : Even though the physical properties of wasted-vinyl-aggregate concrete such as compressive strength, Poisson°Øs ratio, elastic modulus, and splitting tensile strength were inferior to those of ordinary concrete, they met requirements for structural concrete. The thermal properties of concrete were improved by wasted vinyl aggregate because it decreased thermal conductivity and increased specific heat of the concrete. According to the result of finite element analysis, temperature variation in pavement subgrade was mitigated by box culvert made from wasted-vinyl-aggregate concrete. CONCLUSIONS : Through the laboratory test and finite element analysis of this study, it was concluded that the concrete structures made from wasted vinyl aggregate showed thermal insulation and freeze prevention effects.

  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) in this study is composed of sand, cement, silica fume, siliceous powder, superplasticizer and steel fiber. UHPC is composed of fine mineral particles below 0.5mm in diameter. In general, siliceous powder improves the mechanical properties of concrete by physical and chemical effect. Physical effect is related with filling interior voids which weaken the mechanical properties and chemical effect with reaction of $SiO_2$ with cement hydrates in a condition of high temperature and pressure. We evaluated the effect of siliceous powder's particle size on the mechanical properties of ultra high performance concrete in air pressure and $90^{\circ}C$ steam curing condition. siliceous powder's particle size in this study is in the range of $2{\mu}m$ to $26{\mu}m$. Fluidity in a fresh concrete, compressive strength, ultimate strain, elastic modulus and flexural strength in a hardened concrete was evaluated. We could find out that the smaller siliceous powder's particle size is, the better the fluidity and strength properties.
