  • Wear resistance of cutting tools is one of the most important requirements in terms of the durability of cutting tool itself as well as the machining accuracy of the workpiece. Generally, tungsten carbide ball end mills have been processed with hard coatings for high durability and wear resistance such as diamond coating and tetrahedral amorphous carbon(ta-C) coating. In this study, we developed multilayer ta-C coatings whose wear resistance is comparable to that of diamond coating. First, we prepared single layer ta-C coatings according to the substrate bias voltage and Ar gas flow, and the surface microstructure, raman characteristics, hardness and wear characteristics were evaluated. Then, considering the hardness and wear resistance of the single layer ta-C, we fabricated multilayer coatings consisting of hard and soft layers. As a result, it was confirmed that the wear resistance of the multilayer ta-C coating with hardness of 51 GPa, and elastic recovery rate of 85% improved to 97% compared to that of the diamond coated ball end mill.

  • Hard coating was made on a polycarbonate plate using a sol-gel process with a melamine derivative and silicates, and examined as potential substitutes for automobile glass. Methylated poly(melamine-co-formaldehyde), tetraethoxysilane, and phenyltriethoxysilane were used to form a coating solution. The coatings on the polycarbonate plate were deposited using a sol-gel process. Poly(methyl methacrylate) was coated on the surface of polycarbonate in order to improve adhesion property. The optimum conditions and formulation to obtain excellent physical properties of the coating were determined. Adding the melamine derivative to the coating solution, the pencil hardness of the coating was improved. The hardness of a 3H class pencil, excellent abrasion resistance, and surface uniformity were found in the coated polycarbonate surface.

  • Purpose: To observe changes of coatings and lens materials with varying temperature to understand effect of temperature on plastic lens. Methods: In this study, three lenses of different refractive indices (2 of thiourethane oriented lenses, an allyl diglycol carbonate oriented lens) were exposed to high temperature (50, 80, and 100 degree) for 5 hours and changes of individual coating (anti-refractive coating, hard coating, and water repellent coating) were measured. Results: As a result, high-refractive index lenses did not exhibit significant variation of hardness. However, hardness of mid-refractive index lens were decreased when exposed to high temperature and destructions of hard coating layer was inferred. Surface contact angles of lens were decreased with increasing temperature and water repellent coating layer were damaged at higher than 80 degree. Conclusions: Multi including water repellent coatings on all three lenses with different refractive indices were damaged when exposed to at or higher than 80 degree. The degree of changes in mechanical and physical properties were depended on polymer material type.

  • In this study, a new sliding contact problem involving an elastomeric seal, a spherical particle and a hard coated steel counterface was modeled to investigate the detailed wear mechanisms related to the sealing surface. The model was also used to design the optimum coating conditions. A three-dimensional finite element contact problem was modeled and analyzed using the nonlinear finite element code, MARC. The deformed steel surface and stress distributions are presented for different coating layers and thicknesses. When the coating thickness is relatively small, the entrapped particle produces surface plastic deformations such as groove and torus. In addition, the sealing surface can be damaged by abrasive wear as well as fatigue wear. For a relatively thick and multi-layered coating, on the other hand, surface plastic deformation does not occur, and the amount of abrasive and fatigue wear is reduced. Therefore, the proposed contact model and results can be used in the design of various sealing systems, further intensive studies are required.

  • The frictional behaviors of Cermets/Cr-Ceramics and Cu-Al coatings of piston ring were investigated. Friction tests were carried out by pin-on-disk test and materials properties of coating layer were analyzed by nano indentation tester. The effect of surface roughness of cylinder liner on the friction coefficient was analyzed. This study provided tribological data of hard and soft piston ring coatings against cylinder liner. The surface roughness does exert an influence on the average friction coefficient, with smoother surfaces generally yielding lower friction coefficients. In case of hard-coating, the scratch depth, width and pile-up height had close relationship with hardness. So the scratch width, depth and pile-up height increases with decreasing friction coefficient. But in case of soft-coating, the friction coefficients are strongly dependent on the morphological characteristics such as, scratch depth, width, pile-up height and elastic modulus.

  • The electron beam (EB) induced curing of a typical resin designed for the hard coating layer of in-mold decoration foils was investigated. The samples were irradiated with different doses of EB and the curing reaction was monitored by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The change in coating properties such as surface hardness and anti-abrasion property was studied as a function of increasing dose. The effect of the addition of nano-particles on the improvement of coating properties was also examined. It was expected that the experimental results could be used for the commercial exploitation of the EB curing system comparable to the ultraviolet (UV) curing system.

  • The friction surfaces of mechanical parts are heat-treated or coated with hard materials to minimize wear. Increasing the hardness is a very useful way to reduce abrasive wear. The general Brinell hardness test, which is widely used for metallic materials, is not suitable because it hardly shows any change in hardness when coated with thin films. In this study, we propose a basis for the application of the new Brinell hardness test method to the coated friction surface. An indentation analysis of the rigid sphere and elastic-perfectly plastic materials is performed using a commercial finite element analysis software. The results indicate that their loadto-diameter ratio is the same; the Brinell hardness test method can be applied even when the indenter diameter is on the micrometer scale. In the case of hard coating, it is difficult to calculate Brinell hardness using the diameter of the indentation, but the study revealed, for the first time, that it can be calculated using the depth of the indentation regardless of coating. The change in hardness owing to thin film coating over a wide load range implies that the hardness evaluation method is appropriate. Additional studies on various properties related to the substrate and coating material are required to apply the proposed method.

  • We report results on microtribological studies of chemically grafted nanoscale polymer layers of different architecture with thickness below 30 nm. We have fabricated the molecular lubrication coatings from elastomeric tri-block copolymers and tested two different designs of corresponding nanocomposite coatings. We observed a significant reduction of friction forces and an increase of the wear stability when a minute amount of oil was trapped within the grafted polymer layer. These polymer gel layers exhibited a very steady friction response and a small value of the coefficient of friction as compared to the initial polymer coating. A polymer 'triplex' coating has been formed by a multiple grafting technique. The unique design of this layer Includes a hard-soft-hard architecture with a compliant rubber interlayer mediating localized stresses transferred through the topmost hard layer. This architecture provides a non-linear mechanical response under a normal compression stress and allows additional dissipation of mechanical energy via the elastic rubber interlayer.

  • Hard coatings were deposited on a polycarbonate plate as potential substitutes for glass in cars. In this research the copolymers of p-polyphenylene (PPH) and m-phenylene (MPH) were synthesized, and using these copolymers the coatings were conducted on a polycarbonate plate. The hardness of the coating surface was affected with the mole ratio of PPH and MPH in the copolymer. When the mole ratio of PPH : MPH in the copolymer was 20 : 80, the coating showed 2H class of pencil hardness and also showed the best abrasion resistance.

  • Hard coatings were deposited on a polycarbonate plate as potential substitutes for glass in cars. In this research polyphenylene derivatives were synthesized and the coatings were conducted on a polycarbonate plate. Poly(benzoylphenylene) and its phenylene copolymers were synthesized. Using poly (benzoylphenylene), the coating showed 1H class of pencil hardness. And using its copolymers, the coating showed 2H class of pencil hardness. The copolymer also showed the better abrasion resistance than homopoly (benzoylphenylene).
