  • For effective conservation of the oceans and harbors, long-term and systematic development of the ocean and harbor monitoring system is essential. A monitoring system capable of real-time and accurate data acquisition is necessary for dealing with the level of contamination by situations, such as red tide and foods. This paper introduces an effective and economical real-time harbor environmental monitoring system that utilizes PCS wireless data communication technology. The monitoring system has various functions, such as multiple communication, TCP/IP protocol for wireless internet access, system time synchronization, and bi-directional communication between the measuring device and the server. The system has been implemented at Shinseondae harbor pier in Busan to validate the system's stability and effectiveness in data acquisition. The acquired real-time ocean and harbor environmental data is expected to have a large effect, when shared with the public through the Internet.

  • This paper presents the primary conceptual design results of Smart Harbor. As the world trade becomes active, so container cargo volume is increasing constantly. Since the coming of very large container ships, It's necessary that a harbor handles many containers more than before. Therefore, we designed the new concept of SMART HARBOR which overcomes land site problem for port expansion and geographic constraints of very large container ships in harbor.

  • Although there are a lot of primary factors to be able to make characters and identities in Pusan South Harbor, Badly Planned development prevented enhancing the sense of place in urban waterfront. The point in the waterfront development is how to secure amenities based on indentity and orientation; node, landmark, edge, path, district. This study aims at developing waterfront area of Pusan South Harbor and attempting to establish an identity through studying characteristics of ‘places’ in Pusan South Harbor. The place consists of two elements; orientation and identity, which can be explained the environmental totality, ‘character’ and ‘space’ respectively. The urban waterfront has strong characteristics which consists of land area, water area, and transit zone combining two areas. The place of Pusan South Harbor is analysed those four elements. We proposed objectives and criteria which can be used in enhancing the sense of this place.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the causal relationship among the trading volume of Pyeongtaek port, Incheon Inner Harbor, Incheon North Harbor. Methodologically, Granger causality, impulse response function, and variance decomposition based on VAR are used. The results indicate that Pyeongtaek port trading volume positive shock has positive effects on Incheon North Harbor. In addition, Incheon Inner Harbor trading volumes positive shock has negative effects on Pyeongtaek port. The results also suggest that the volume of Pyeongtaek port Granger-causes the volume of Incheon North Harbor, but not vice versa. The volume of Incheon Inner Harbor Granger-causes the volume of Pyeongtaek port. Based on these results, we suggest that port authorities have to focus on policies that would promote copetition between port of Pyeongtaek and Incheon in the world harbor industry.

  • Since a small harbor is often located near surf zone areas which have great influences of sediment transport, there is a great possibility that the sediment will be deposited inside of the harbor. The sediment transport occurring around the harbor entrance can't be explained by the wind wave and wave induced current. In this study, it was investigated the mechanism of the entrainment of sediment into a small harbor with permeable breakwater using hydraulic experiments in 3D wave basin. It is found out that the significant sediment entrainment produced when the mode of oscillation in the harbor became the 1st mode. In the case where the incident wave period was shorter than the period that caused higher mode oscillation in harbor, only a little amount of sediment entrainment took place. The vortex shedding from the top of secondary breakwater played very important roll in the entrainment of sediment into the harbor. It is also found that the small jetty attached at the top of secondary breakwater could effectively prevent the entrainment of sediment into the harbor.

  • Harbor floating pier is a structure in which one or several floating vessels are connected to have a port function so that ships can be bordered regardless of tide level in places where differences between tidal rocks are severe. There are 233 harbor floating piers in Korea, and 27.5% of harbor floating pier are over 30 years old. Harbor floating piers older than 30 years are potentially at high risk of accidents. However, there is no clear standard for disposal or sale of aging harbor floating pier, and the management regulations on the timing of maintenance inspection and repair are ambiguous. In this study, the AHP model was designed by classifying the problems and improvement factors of harbor floating pier facility operation through interviews with port managers and existing literature studies. The AHP analysis showed that the relative importance of the evaluation factors of the higher class was in the order of improvement of the legal system, improvement of operational management and technical improvement. This study can be used as basic data for improving the operation of Korea harbor floating pier facilities.

  • The volume of the world's container transportation has been increasing. To serve this transportation need, the size of the container carrier is getting larger. The global ports are required to deepen the waterways as well as to prepare infrastructure to serve these super-size container carriers. However, few ports around the world could meet the requirements. To solve these difficulties, the concept of the Mobile Harbor has been developed. An onboard Automatic Storage and Retrieval System(AS/RS) has been proposed for the B1 type Mobile Harbor to maximize the container throughput within the limited space of the Mobile Harbor. A scenario of operations and freight movements of the B1 type Mobile Harbor is prepared and the storage size of the B1 type Mobile Harbor through the computer simulation is estimated. The size of the Mobile Harbor and the size of the AS/RS has also been estimated. The optimized size of the Mobile Harbor could be proposed.

  • Response of harbor structure to environmental loads such as wave load, impact load, ship's contacting load, is a fundamental factor in designing of the structure's optimal configuration. In this paper, typical environmental loads against coastal structures are investigated for designing of the optimal harbor structure. Loads to be considered here are wave load, impact load and contacting load due to ship mooring. Statistical analysis for several harbor structure types under the corresponding loads is carried out, followed by investigation of effect of individual environmental load. Based on these, the optimal configuration for the harbor structure is obtained after considerable engineering process. Estimation of contacting load of the ship is suggested using effective energy concepts for the load, and analysis of structural behavior is done for the optimal designing of the structure in the particular load. A guideline for the design process of the harbor structure is established, and safety of the structure is examined by proposed scheme. For verification of the analytical approach, various steel-piled coastal structures and caissons are chosen and relevant structural analyses are carried out using the Finite Element Methods combined with MIDAS/GTS and ANSYS code. It is found using the Morison equation that impact load cannot be a major load in the typical harbor structure compared with the original wave load, and that configuration shape of the structure may play an important role in consideration of the response criteria.

  • In this paper, we report the results of the experimental study on the flow and the mass transport around a square harbor driven by a tidal effect. The model harbor is composed of a uniform water-depth with a straight breakwater. The harbor is connected to the outer ocean by an entrance region having the same shape as the harbor. We investigated two cases, one having another breakwater in the place between the entrance region and the outer ocean, and the other without it, The surface and bottom flow patterns of the model container are visualized by using light particles and dye, respectively. It was shown that the inner harbor and the entrance region have well-organized, large vortical residual flows, and the material transport between the entrance and outer region is however significantly different for two cases; when the breakwater is built between the two regions, the transport is far better than that without it, which is clearly contrary to our common sense that the breakwater would block the dispersion of the materials between the harbor and the outer ocean.
