  • In this paper, we intend to demonstrate a new intuitive force-feedback device for advanced VR applications. Force feed-back for the device is tension based and is characterized by 7 degrees of freedom (DOF); 3 DOF for translation, 3 DOF for rotation, and 1 DOF for grasp). The SPIDAR-G (Space Interface Device for Artificial Reality with Grip) will allow users to interact with virtual objects naturally by manipulating two hemispherical grips located in the center of the device frame. We will show how to connect the strings between each vertex of grip and each extremity of the frame in order to achieve force feedback. In addition, methodologies will be discussed for calculating translation, orientation and grasp using the length of 8 strings connected to the motors and encoders on the frame. The SPIDAR-G exhibits smooth force feedback, minimized inertia, no backlash, scalability and safety. Such features are attributed to strategic string arrangement and control that results in stable haptic rendering. The design and control of the SPIDAR-G will be described in detail and the Space Graphic User Interface system based on the proposed SPIDAR-G system will be demonstrated. Experimental results validate the feasibility of the proposed device and reveal its application to virtual reality.

  • This paper presents a design of a situation training system supporting mixed-reality for the developmental disabled. The training scenario is developed for the disabled to improve the sense of sight and perception. The user sticks a virtual pin into a hole in the working board according to the direction and the appropriate feedback is delivered based on the FSM(Finite State Machine). In order to improve the reality and the training effect, the user's hand is inserted in the virtual training environments and the tactile sensation is provided using the haptic device.

  • For virtual education, the multimodal learning environment with haptic feedback, termed 'immersive textbook', is necessary to enhance the learning effectiveness. However, the learning contents for immersive textbook are not widely available due to the constraints in creation and playback environments. To address this problem, we propose a framework for producing and displaying the multimodal contents for immersive textbook. Our framework provides an XML-based meta-language to produce the multimodal learning contents in the form of intuitive script. Thus it can help the user, without any prior knowledge of multimodal interactions, produce his or her own learning contents. The contents are then interpreted by script engine and delivered to the user by visual and haptic rendering loops. Also we implemented a prototype based on the aforementioned proposals and performed user evaluation to verify the validity of our framework.

  • In smart factories, the entire manufacturing process from design to the final product is simulated in a virtual manufacturing environment and optimized before starting production. Suppliers and customers make decisions based on the simulation results. Therefore, effective rendering of the information of the virtual products to suppliers and customers is essential for this manufacturing paradigm. In this study, a method of rendering the surface roughness of the virtual products using a tactile display is presented. A tactile display device comprising a $3{\times}3$ array of individually controlled piezoelectric stack actuators is constructed. The surface topology of the virtual products is rendered directly by controlling the piezoelectric stack actuators. A series of experiments is performed to evaluate the performance of the tactile display device. An electrical discharge machined surface is rendered using the proposed method.

  • This paper presents a haptic rendering algorithm in the case that the virtual environment elastically deforms in response to the force applied by a user with a virtual tool. Considering friction, elasticity, multiple contacts and dynamics of the virtual object, this algorithm lets the operator have the feel of interactions in the virtual environment as close as to the reality. Based on the proposed algorithm several experiments are conducted and its effectiveness is confirmed.

  • Most interaction schemes in virtual environment are indirect in one way or another. ln particular, without a haptic device (which introduces its own problems due to its cumbersomeness), users must rely on visual (or/and aural) feedback, and can not directly appreciate the 3Dness of the interaction object even with stereoscopy. This causes a drop in object presence because people are used to, for instance, observing objects in one's hand, rotating and manipulating them with physical contact. To alleviate this problem, this paper proposes a hand-held cubic screen, named TangibleScreen, on which the appearance of the target interaction object is projected. We choose the Relief Texture Mapping as the rendering method to correctly generate the viewer dependent textures to be projected on the non-planar surfaces of the TangibleScreen.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop simulations that can be used for virtual education in dentistry. This development goal is to allow dental students to learn the necessary surgical techniques at the point of their choice, not going into the operating room, away from time, space, and physical limits. In this paper configuration, the optimization method is applied convergent, and when the operation of the VR contents is performed, the content data is extracted from the interaction analysis formed in the VR engine, and the data is processed by the content algorithm. It also computes events and dental operations generated within the 3D engine programming and generates corresponding events through data processing according to the input signal. The visualization information is output to the HMD using the rendering information. In addition, the operating room environment was constructed by studying lighting and material for actual operating room environment. We applied the ratio of actual space to virtual space and the ratio between character and actual person to create a spatial composition at a similar rate to actual space.

  • Laparoscopic surgery is a surgical procedure which uses long laparoscopic instruments through tiny holes in abdomen while watching images from a laparoscopic camera through umbilicus. Laparoscopic surgeries have many advantages rather than open surgeries, however it is hard to learn the surgical skills for laparoscopic surgery. Recently, some virtual simulation systems for laparoscopic surgery are developed to train novice surgeons or resident surgeons. In this study, we introduce the techniques that we developed for laparoscopic surgical training simulator for cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), which is one of the most frequently performed by laparoscopic surgery. The techniques for cholecystectomy simulation include modeling of human organs (liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, etc.), real-time deformable body calculation, realistic 3D visualization of surgical scene, high-fidelity haptic rendering and haptic device technology, and so on. We propose each simulation technique for the laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedures such as identifying cystic duct and cystic artery to clamp and cut, dissecting connective tissues between the gallbladder and liver. In this paper, we describe the techniques and discuss about the results of the proposed cholecystectomy simulation for laparoscopic surgical training.

  • We developed an authoring tool for designing vibrotactile patterns quickly and easily by using the drag-and-drop paradigm in mobile devices. Designed vibrotactile patterns are registered into a data pool in the XML format, improving the reusability and extensibility of vibrotactile patterns. A multi-channel timeline interface is also incorporated to provide time-synchronized pattern editing for multiple vibration patterns (for multiple vibration actuators). In addition, an internal vibration player is embedded in the authoring tool in order to evaluate the patterns on the spot. A transform function for perceptually transparent vibration rendering can also be set in the editor. Although the authoring tool was developed for mobile devices, it can be used for other applications such as haptic interaction m virtual reality.
