Experimental Study of VIV Characteristics of Free Hanging PVC Pipe under Forced Oscillation Conditions (강제가진조건에서 자유롭게 매달린 PVC 파이프의 와류유기진동 특성에 관한 시험 연구)

  • A series of model tests was carried out to investigate the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) characteristics of a free hanging PVC pipe under forced oscillation conditions. The prescribed displacement with a period and amplitude was forced at the top of the riser. The motion of the riser along its length was measured with underwater cameras in three dimensions. The top-excited responses in the inline direction and vortex-induced vibration in the cross-flow direction were examined in the time and frequency domains. Multi-peak frequencies in the VIV were demonstrated to be strongly dependent upon the Keulegan-Carpenter number, corresponding with the results of Blevin. It was found that the Reynolds numbers (excitation period) was a critical parameter for the dominant VIV characteristics, even under the condition of using the same Keulegan-Carpenter number, under the top-excited condition. In the resonance at the nth natural frequency by the forced-motion induced VIV frequency, the riser responded with a large amplitude and forced frequency, dominantly in the VIV CF direction.

  • Introduction : Suicide in Korea has increased to 31.2 persons per 100,000 population, the world's highest level. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the world, but in Korea, it is 4th leading cause of death. Therefore suicide is a serious problem in Korea. Many suicide prevention strategies have been proposed. Despite efforts to prevent suicides in Korea, a steady increases in the number of suicides has been brought into question the effectiveness of suicide prevention activities in Korea. Methods : Strategy of restricting suicide methods in many countries was reviewed. Systematic approach to restrict suicidal methods in Korea is proposed. Results : Restricting suicide methods is one of the effective suicide prevention strategies employed in the UK and other countries. Since many suicides occur impulsively, suicide attempt lethality is an important factor in determining the rate of deaths in suicidal attempts. Physical restriction of suicide methods is important in preventing suicide, but restriction of cognitive access to information about suicide and suicide method is more important in preventing suicide. In particular hanging is one of the most common methods of suicides in Korea, it is crucial to develop strategies to prevent suicide by hanging cognitively. Also information about suicide should be properly controlled. To do this, suicide news reporting guidelines should be observed, and website makers whose websites provoke thoughts about suicide should be more strictly sanctioned. Conclusion : Restricting suicide methods along with other suicide prevention plans may be the most effective way to prevent suicide in Korea.

The pre-hospital analysis of patients with suicide attempts in Gangwon-do (일개 도 지역 자살 시도 환자에 대한 병원전 단계 분석)

  • Objective: This study examined the characteristics of suicidal attempters, including pre-hospital patients and those who visited the emergency department. Methods: Suicidal attempters who had been reported to the 119 call center were selected between July 2015 and June 2016. Sex, age, place, methods of suicidal attempt, season, time, and suicide success rate were reviewed in the fire center records. Results: A total 961 suicide attempters were enrolled. Among them, 53.6% were males who had an approximately 2.6 times higher mortality than that of females (9.2%). The most preferred place to commit suicide was the home in both sexes (68.0% in male, 82.8% in female) and the most preferred methods was drug intoxication, particularly pesticide. The method with the highest mortality was hanging and the lowest was self-harm. The season of the highest mortality was spring. The success of suicide and the time variation were similar. Most of the un-transferred patients also selected fatal suicide attempts compared to transfer patients. Conclusion: Unlike previous studies, this study includes information on un-transferred patients. Overall, the probability of death was highest as more than 50 years men chose hanging as a method, which had an influence on the un-transferred patients group.

Interpretation of Coloring Materials Recorded in Ceremonial Writing of the Hanging Painting of Chiljangsa Temple (Five Buddhas) (칠장사 오불회 괘불탱 화기에 기록된 채색 재료의 해석)

  • This study aimed to interpret the coloring materials recorded in the ceremonial writing with the scientific investigation results of the Hanging Painting of the Chiljangsa Temple (Five Buddhas). The results confirm that the Jinboon, Joohong, Hwangdan, Hwanggeum and Seokjahwang are clearly connected to lead white, cinnabar, minium, gold, and orpiment, respectively. Danghayeop and samrok are related to Copper trihydroxychloride, while Daecheong and Joongcheong are azurite, and they seems to be classified by the particle size. Yeonji and Chunghwa are organic dyes in red and blue, respectively, with blue confirming the existence of the side, but Yeonji differs from the names of the ancient texts and Chinese characters; it is unclear whether it is a commonly used Yeonji because of differences in the names of the ancient texts. The presence of Sootohwang has not been confirmed in the gwaebultaeng, but it can be extracted from the soil as a yellow-colored material but the possibility of Deunghwang cannot be ruled out.

Analysis of the Landscape Elements in the Poems on the Tablets of Kwanghanru (광한루 편액시에 나타난 경관요소 분석)

  • Poems written on the tablets hanging in Kwanghanru(a pavilion in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do) reveal each author's view of landscape and their recognition of the pavilion and it surroundings. This study consists of the following four analysis frames of the characteristics, sensations, and temporal and spatial axes of the landscape elements grouping tablet poems into two categories of deunglusi of Joseon's literary men, and baegiljangsi and cheongtaksi of the 1930s. The result of the landscape element analysis shows that physical elements are shown more frequently than symbolic ones. Among the physical ones, natural elements are used more often than artificial ones. The landscape elements appearing in each individual poem of baegiljangsi and cheongtaksi are relatively more than those of deunglusi. When the landscape elements are analyzed by sensational aspect, most of them are visual in nature, and there also appear some that are aural or olfactory in nature. Analyzed from a temporal axis, expressions related to autumn and evening and night are used frequently. From the spatial axis, foreground elements are preferred to middleground or background ones.

Effect of the Packaging Container on the Freshness of Raw Oysters Crassostrea gigas (생굴(Crassostrea gigas)의 선도 변화에 포장용기가 미치는 영향)

  • The shelf life of oysters Crassostrea gigas, in two different types of packaging containers, polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), was determined by evaluating the pH, glycogen and soluble protein content, turbidity, and viable cell count. After 7 days of storage, the pH of the packing water in the PE container decreased to 5.88, while the pH in the PET container decreased to 6.03. In the PE container, the glycogen content of the oysters decreased by 0.85 g/100 g and the soluble protein content and turbidity of the packing seawater increased by 1,927.21 mg/100 g and 3.24 McF, respectively. In the PET container, the glycogen content of the oysters decreased by 0.96 g/100 g and the soluble protein content and turbidity of the packing seawater increased by 1,674.75 mg/100 g and 0.98 McF, respectively. The reaction rate constants (K) were as follows: glycogen content, -0.18 (PE) and -0.10 (PET); soluble protein content, 0.29 (PE) and 0.26 (PET); and turbidity, 0.41 (PE) and 0.06 (PET). These results suggested that PET can be used as a new packaging container material for raw oysters because the quality is maintained and it offers more convenient handling during distribution.

Enhancement of anti-inflammatory and anti-tumorigenic properties of 3D-spheroid formed mesenchymal stem cells derived from rheumatoid arthritis joints

  • Current studies have revealed the capacity of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in term of immunomodulatory properties, and this distinct potential is downgraded according to the disease duration of patients-derived MSCs. In order to enhance the immunomodulatory and anti-tumorigenic properties of the rheumatoid arthritis (RA) joints-derived MSCs, we aggregate synovial fluid-derived MSCs from RA joints (RA-hMSCs) into 3D-spheroids by the use of hanging drop culture method. Cells were isolated from synovial fluids of RA joints with longstanding active status over 13 years. For aggregation of RA-hMSCs into 3D-spheroids, cells were plated in hanging drops in 30 μL of advanced DMEM (ADMEM) containing 25,000-30,000 cells/drop and cultured for 48 h. To analyze the comparative immunomodulatory effects of 3D-spheroid and 2D monolayer cultured RA-hMSCs and then cells were cultured in ADMEM supplemented with 20% of synovial fluids of RA patients for 48 h and were evaluated by qRT-PCR for their expression of mRNA levels of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory markers. Cellular aggregation of RA-hMSCs was observed and cells were aggregate into a single sphere. Following treatment of RA patient's synovial fluids into the RA-hMSCs, spheroids formed RA-hMSCs showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher expression of TNFα stimulated gene/protein 6 (TSG-6) than the monolayer cultured RA-hMSCs. Therefore, the 3D-spheroid culture methods of RA-hMSCs were more effective than 2D monolayer cultures in suppressing inflammatory response treated with 20% of RA-synovial fluids by expression of TNFα (TSG-6) according to the immune response and enhanced secretion of inflammatory factors.

From Law/Superego to Love: Law, Violence, and the Possibility of Love in Herman Melville's Billy Budd, Sailor (법/초자아에서 사랑으로 -허먼 멜빌의 『빌리 버드』에 나타나는 법, 폭력, 그리고 사랑의 가능성)

  • This essay aims to explore Herman Melville's recognition and resolution of the vicious link between law and violence in his posthumous Billy Budd, Sailor (1924). In order to investigate the issues, this essay refers to Freud, Benjamin, Derrida, Lacan, and Žižek, all perceptive to the uncanny affinity of law and violence. Especially, Žižek's arguments of "superego" as an embodiment of cruel and destructive violence supplementing the official law and of "love" as an ethical possibility beyond the limit of the problematic law are introduced in this study to make Melville's reflection of the inseparableness between law and violence much clearer. John Claggart and Captain Vere embody the legal (superegoic) violence. Claggart even procurs secret enjoyment, in the name of maintaining positive law. Billy Budd discloses another violence defending his justness according to natural law. However, Melville suggests the possibility of suspending the problematic tie of law/violence through "love," as portrayed at the last part of the story. The two final words from Billy and Vere, as a sort of delayed dialogue between them after the event of their secret interview before Billy's hanging, suggest that they finally distance from the obscene nightly law of superego-respectively from outward punitiveness toward Vere and from inward punishment for Vere's excessive enforcement of Billy's hanging-and identify each other's lack as their own. Their love implicated in the last words is for the real other-in Lacan's sense-who discloses the constitutive lack or incompleteness of beings and aporia of the law. This essay's examination of Melville's representations about the superegoic violence as the (im-)possible condition of law and the possibility of withdrawing from it would help us recognize Billy Budd, Sailor as the author's own last word for the possible vision of love cutting the vicious knot of law/violence.

Effects of floor type and hanging type environmental enrichment on the behavior of growing pigs (바닥형과 현수형 환경 보조물이 육성돈의 행동에 미치는 영향)

  • Animal Welfare is spreading throughout the world, but remains weak in Korean swine farms. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the effect of floor type and hanging type environmental enrichment on the behavior of growing pigs under the traditional feeding environment. A total of 45 crossbred pigs (Yorkshire${\times}$Landrace${\times}$Duroc; average weight, $33.35{\pm}5.5kg$) were assigned into three treatments consisting of control, hanging type(T1) and floor type(T2) with three replicates in semi-slurry pen. The hanging enrichment was suspended at shoulder height of the pigs, and the floor enrichment was fixed in the center of the pens. Growth and cortisol were estimated at the end of the experimental period. Behaviour patterns were analyzed on the first and eighth days after starting the experiment. Growth was not differed among control and treatments. However, cortisol was decreased in T2 compared to control(25.28 vs. 46.75 ng/mL; p<0.05). On the first day, movement and aggression were lower in both treatments than in control(p<0.01). On the eighth day, time and frequency of playing action were increased in T2 compared to T1(p<0.01) and both treatment groups showed more active behaviour than control(p<0.01). These results suggested that the enrichment may meet the natural action requirement of pigs. Therefore, our data can be utilized as basic information for welfare with environmental enrichments in farm animals.

A Study on Survival and Growth of Ark shell, Scapharca broughtonii with differential density during hanging culture

  • Ark shell Scapharca broughtonii length and total weight growth by density, which was hanging-cultured near the sea area of Yeosu-city, Hoenggan-island (below is Yeosu), showed inverse correlation with density. As for the average growth of shell length by density, the test area of 10 shells showed the best result as 5.21 mm, and it became lower as density became higher. Also, the increase of total weight by density showed the same result, thus on the whole, the increase of average shell length and total weight of 10-20 shell test area showed the better result than the test area of 30-40 shells. In addition, even if the parashell's shell length by density and total weight growth in the sea area of Namhae-gun, Mijo-fishing port (below is Namhae) showed inverse correlation with density, it showed the slighter inverse correlation than the sea area of Yeosu. As for the average growth of shell length by density, the test area of 10 shells showed the best result as 4.55mm, but the average growth of shell length by density in the test area of 20-40 shells appeared to be similar as 3.11, 3.36 and 3.27 mm. On the other hand, as for the increase of total weight by density, the test area of 10-20 shells showed the more increase than the test area of 30-40 shells. In conclusion, it is guessed that the culture density of 20 shells/$0.12m^2$ (166 shells / $1m^2$) would be appropriate when hanging-culturing the shells. At the sea area of A, the survival rate of Scapharca broughtonii parashell was 68-87% by density respectively, and it showed the density-dependent result, while the survival rate of sea area of Namhae, where phytoplankton as prey is abundant, showed the much better result as 91-100%. It is guessed that this may be due to the fact that the quantity of phytoplankton in sea area of Yeosu is just 55.89% of sea area of Namhae. When hanging-culturing the shells, the water temperature by sea area ranged from 16.22 to $25.66^{\circ}C$, salinity 30.07-33.48, pH 8.10-8.45, and DO 4.49-9.65 mg/L.
