Adsorption of xylans extracted from birchwood and oat spelt on Hw-BKP were analyzed using HPLC. The effect of xylan adsorption on paper properties such as tensile, tear index and brightness was also investigated. The constituents of xylan was analyzed with HPLC after hydrolysis with dilute sulfuric acid. It was shown that xylose was the major constituent and small amounts of glucose and galactose were contained in the xylan samples. Adsorption of xylan on hardwood fibers was evaluated using acid hydrolysis and HPLC techniques. Results showed that the adsorption of negatively charged xylan on the fiber surface was negligible probably because electrostatic repulsion between these two materials. Pretreatment of the fiber with alum increased xylan adsorption. The amount of adsorption increased up to 30 mg/g. With the increase of xylan adsorption both tensile and tear strength of the handsheet increased suggesting xylan can be a very effective strength agents for papermaking. Brightness of the handsheets decreased, however, with the use of xylan.

Alkaline Sizing behavior and mechanism of handsheets, which were prepared from thermomechanical pulp (TMP) with alkylketene dimer (AKD), were studied in terms of the conditions of the handsheet-making. AKD content in the TMP handsheets was increased with increasing of AKD addition level and the addition of a polyamideamine-epichlorohydrin resin (PAE) clearly enhanced AKD retention as well as the resultant sizing performance of TMP handsheets. Although drying of the AKD sized TMP webs at $20^{\circ}C$ led to no or quite low sizing level, but TMP handsheets sized with AKD had higher sizing degrees with increasing of the temperature of heat treatment. Scanning electron microscopic observations of the AKD-sized TMP handsheets showed that AKD emulsion particles were present on pulp fiber surfaces independently without coagulation in the TMP handsheets dried at $20^{\circ}C$. Heat treatment of the AKD-sized handsheets resulted in disappearance of the AKD emulsion particles because of their melting and spreading. The addition of calcium carbonate filler to the TMP suspensions did not influence on AKD content in the TMP handsheets. Nevertheless, their sizing degrees clearly increased by the addition of $CaCO_3$filler. Probably, AKD molecules adsorbed on the $CaCO_3$filler particles contribute to the enhancement of sizing performance. Thus, AKD can give sizing features effectively to the TMP handsheets, when they are made under suitable conditions.

In this study, the lumen loading technology for preparing magnetic papers were evaluated. The rice husk fiber, softwood kraft pulp, hardwood kraft pulp were applied and the morphological properties of pits on the those fibers were investigated with SEM. The softwood kraft pulp had the bigger size of pits, $3{\sim}5{\mu}m$ in diameter, which resulted in higher loading amount. The comparison of two methods for lumen loading such as the low concentration method with the disintegrator and the high concentration method with the Hobart mixer showed the Hobart mixer could resulted in the higher efficiency. The conditions of lumen loading process such loading time, addition amount of metal particles and addition of PEI were also evaluated. The magnetic hysteresis loop of handsheet samples made of lumen loaded fiber with $Fe_3O_4$ and $Fe_2O_3$ were examined. The differences in magnetic properties could be found according to the ferrite types.

The reduction of paper machine water usage is precursor to the water system closure of any mills. This reduction in water consumption reduces the loss of solids; especially fine particulates and their surface adsorbed chemical additives, from mills, which causes an inevitable increase of fine materials in papermaking systems. Also the reduction of paper machine water usage causes substantial increase of organic and inorganic substances in process water. The deterioration of the papermaking process water quality accompanying the reduction of papermaking system closure can be a prime source of the aggravation of paper quality and process efficiency. It is of great importance for paper mills to investigate the influence of the level of papermaking system closure on the paper properties and process runnabililty before implementing process closure. To predict the changes in paper properties at different levels of system closure, highly cotaminated white water was prepared using reverse osmosis technology and used to prepare handsheets from fine paper and newsprint stocks. Results showed that the quality of process water affects the strength. Preparation of highly contaminated process water and handsheet forming with headbox stocks provided important criteria to determine the relationship between the qualities of process water and paper products.

In this study, the effects of chlorine dioxide (D) bleaching conditions on the delignification of hemp bast fiber were elucidated. Chlorine dioxide bleaching was carried out through three stages (DED) and five stages (DEDED), respectively. Applied amounts of chlorine dioxide at $D_1$ and $D_2$ stages were varied to find the optimum bleaching condition. It was found that the optical properties of its handsheet as well as the delignification of hemp bast fiber increased as the concentration of chlorine dioxide at $D_1$ stage increased. It was also notable that the bleachability of the DEDED bleaching stages was slightly more effective than that of the DED bleaching stages. The burst index of the handsheets made with bleached hemp bast fiber was higher than that of the unbleached samples, but the burst index of these samples decreased as their delignification increased. These results indicated that the higher concentration of chlorine dioxide at $D_1$ stage was major factor to improve the bleaching efficiency of hemp bast fiber.

In this study, we investigated influence of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) modified by washless multilayering of polyelectrolytes on paper quality. Three layers of polyelectrolytes (cationic starch/anionic polyacrylamide/cationic starch) were formed on the surface of GCC using laboratory inline washless polyelectrolytes multilayering system, which was called inline LbL GCC. Base papers were prepared with untreated GCC or inline LbL GCC using a laboratory handsheet former. These handsheets were coated with rod coater, and then printed by black ink. Properties of base paper and fold crack of coated paper were evaluated. Base paper with inline LbL GCC showed much higher mechanical strength in terms of tensile index, strain, internal bond strength, and folding endurance. The fold crack of coated paper with inline LbL GCC occurred more frequently compared to coated paper with untreated GCC. This might be due to highly improved internal bond strength of base paper, which resulted in smaller delamination that played a role of stress dissipation. It would be recommended to design a proper coating layer in order to prevent fold crack.

The application of conifer leave to the papermaking process as a functional organic filler was investigated in this study. The powder of the conifer leave after hot water extraction for the functional extract, such as phytoncide, was applied to OCC stock. The comparison between the commercial wood flour and the conifer leave powder as organic filler for OCC paper were conducted with various wet pressing conditions. The amount of the water removal by the wet pressing process and the bulk of handsheet were increased by the addition of the wood flour and the conifer leave powder, although the tensile strength was decreased. At the higher pressure condition of the wet pressing, the wet pressing efficiency was greatly increased by the wood flour and the conifer leave powder. There was a little difference in the performance of the wood flour and the conifer leave powder as an organic filler. Those results showed the conifer leave powder could be an alternative resource to the wood powder for papermaking organic filler.
PCC (precipitated calcium carbonate) and ground calcium carbonate have been widely used in alkaline papermaking. Unfortunately, although increasing filler level in papers can improve the paper properties such as brightness, opacity, stiffness gloss, smoothness, porosity, and printability, as well as decrease cost, some strength of the paper is negatively affected. In this research, needle-like aragonite was synthesized using $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CO_2$ as reactants in the presence of $MgCl_2$ and characterized with scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The physical and optical properties of the paper handsheets containing these needle-like aragonite fillers were evaluated. Results indicated that tensile strength, Z-direction tensile strength and folding endurance of the paper were improved by the needle-like aragonite crystals compared to the paper using commercial PCC (precipitated calcium carbonate) as filler. The stiffness of the paper handsheet on the machine direction was increased, but no evident difference in the cross direction was found. The improvement of paper strength mainly resulted from the twining effect between the aragonite whiskers and paper fibers. The optical properties of the paper were slightly decreased with the use of the needle-like aragonites compared to commercial PCC. These results suggest that paper cost can be decreased by increasing the content of needle-like aragonite filler while paper strength will not be decreased compared to PCC filler.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of deep eutectic solvent (DES) treatment on BCTMP fibers and handsheets properties. DES was prepared using lactic acid and betaine (LB), and the molar ratio of these two components mixtures was controlled to 2:1 (LB 2:1) and 5:1 (LB 5:1). As results, 2% of BCTMP pulp (o.d. weight) was extracted when it was treated by LB 5:1 at $50^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours, stirring constantly at 120 rpm. In contrast, lignin was not extracted when BCTMP was mildly treated by the LB DES mixed with 50% of distilled water at the reacting condition of temperature $60^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours using water bath. These results indicate that conditioned water content and adequate reaction time are needed to achieve effective extraction of lignin. It was also found that stiffening of cellulose fiber due to the mild treatment of LB DES to BCTMP fiber leads to the increase of paper bulk without the loss of strength.

Linerboards have been produced by recycling recovered paper such as old corrugated containers(OCC). Usually linerboards produced during summer season show weak strength compared with those of produced during winter. In order to cope with the weak strength of linerboards produced during summer, and to confirm uniform quality, it is important to understand the seasonal effect on strength properties. Effect of pulping temperature of the OCC for linearboard production was investigated by controlling pulping temperatures at $18^{\circ}C$ and $51^{\circ}C$. Low pulping temperature ($18^{\circ}C$) caused more generation of fines in stock. Consequently retention and drainage of linerboard defibrated at high pulping temperature ($51^{\circ}C$) were better than those of $18^{\circ}C$. Strength properties of handsheet at low pulping temperature were higher than those of high pulping temperature and it could be confirmed that low pulping temperature during winter is one reason of seasonal variation of recycled linerboard strength. It is considered that surface modification of OCC fibers by harsh pulping action during winter caused increase of paper strength.
