  • A glove design which reflects the changes in hand surface by hand motion can reduce the undesirable effects of use of gloves on hand performance. The present study examined changes in hand length dimensions due to hand motion and identified significant factors affecting the length changes. Recruiting 120 males and females in their 20s and 30s having various hand lengths, this study measured 10 hand length dimensions, defined at 2 hand areas(phalangeal and metacarpal areas) for 5 digits, when the hand is stretched and in fist, and then calculated the percentage of length increase for each dimension. ANOVA and simple-effect analyses showed the length change percentages were mainly different depending on digit and hand area: 111-127% at the phalangeal area and 112-116% at the metacarpal area. The length change percentages of the index, middle, ring, and little fingers in the phalangeal area ascended in order and showed a high correlation(r = 0.94)with the ranges of motion of the fingers.

  • This study measured and analyzed male firefighters hand sizes as well as suggested data for developing firefighting gloves with a good fit. Accordingly, body dimensions related to the hand were measured for 100 male firefighters. Twenty-three measuring items related to the hand and lower arm were selected. The firefighters' measurement data were compared to general adult male measurements from the 6th Korean Anthropometric data to analyze the hand sizes characteristics of firefighters. As a result, height, hand circumference, hand breadth, wrist circumference, elbow-wrist length, forearm-fingertip length and firefighter weight were significantly larger than adult males. A correlation analysis for 23 items was conducted to select items used as standards for setting a size when manufacturing firefighting gloves. Hand length and circumference were selected as representative hand parts for making firefighting gloves. Cross analysis between hand length and circumference were conducted to find the section showing the highest distribution ratio. As a result, the highest sections were between 19cm and 21cm for hand circumference and between 18.5cm and 19.5cm for hand length, which may be suggested as the most important ranges.

  • The relationship between morphological characteristics and sensibility of hands for beautiful hands were investigated for college woman in early twenties. Hand Emotional Quotient (HEQ) which is classified as 10 grades was newly suggested as one of the sensibility evaluation methods for the beautiful hands and was applied to assess the qualitative and quantitative relationships between morphological characteristics and HEQ. The factors influenced on the HEQ were in order as width-length ratio of hands, finger length-hand length and finger width-hand length ratios. Otherwise the influences of hand length-nail length and finger length-nail length ratios on HEQ were insignificant. The longer length of hand, finger, and nail and the narrower width of hand and finger, the higher HEQ hands get. In conclusion, it is found that all morphologic characteristics of hands influenced on the sensitivity synthetically. The data constructed on the hand's sensibility is very useful for various beauty products and service areas related to hands.

  • The aim of this study was to provide size intervals in hand requisite in design of gloves. In this study, a survey was administered to gather information about glove manufacturers' sizing systems. In addition, KS glove standards' size dimensions were analyzed. As well, the ISO hand sizing system was also studied. Based on all the analyses' results, a new glove size intervals were composed. The size comprised the control dimensions of hand length and hand circumference. The size interval was 8mm in hand length and 13mm in hand circumference. The size range was established by making the coverage above 80%. The coverage of the new size interval system for an adult's hand was 86.4% and 13 sizes were suggested. The coverage of the male size system was 86.0% and 10 sizes were suggested. The coverage of the female size system was 87.6% and 8 sizes were suggested. For the unfitted gloves, size ranges based on hand length and hand circumference were developed. For the adults group, S, M, L, and XL were suggested and the coverage of the new size range was 78.8%. For the male group, S, M, and L were suggested and the coverage was 82.3%. For the female group, S, M, and L were also suggested and the coverage was 81.3%.

  • This study categorizes and analyzes hand types based on 2-Dimensional measurements of women in their 60-80's in order to establish initial data that can help develop a well-fitted glove and hand protector for elderly women. A total of 22 measurement items were selected to provide information about Size Korea (2010) 3D hand measurements. Participants in the study were 353 elderly women over the age of 60. Subjects were divided into two age groups (60's and over 70's). Statistical tests (such as Descriptive Analysis and T-test) analyzed the data and ascertained the age differences. A factor analysis and cluster analysis were conducted to classify elderly women hand types. The disparities between 20-30's and over 60's age groups were compared by T-test with the SPSS 20 program for Windows. The results in this study are follows: The hand shapes for elderly women were divided into 3 groups. Elderly women's Hand Type A is average length and the medium breadth hand type. Type B is the biggest length and breadth, Type C is the smallest length and breadth hand type. There were significant differences in the 20-30's and over 60's age groups for most hand length and breadth items. In addition, the mean measurement value of the length items decreased as the age increased; however, the diversity of items increased, so that it became shorter and wider. Further study should include the classification of hand shape dimensions for each figure type of sizing gloves for elderly women. We expect hand types to be applicable to the manufacture of gloves for elderly women.

  • This study was performed to measure the various dimensions of the hand for Korean adults. Three hundred and eighteen males and two hundred and sixty females, age ranged 18 to 60, participated in this study. Thirty-five dimensions were selected to measure. Subjects were divided into three age groups, 18 to 29, 30 to 39, and 40 to 60, for each sex. The data were analyzed to see the differences between the age groups and sex by using SAS program. The results showed that the measurements related to breadth and thickness tended to increase as the age increased. Wrist breadth, index finger breadth(distal), index finger breadth(proximal), thumb breadth, and index finger thickness(proximal) increased as the age increased for both males and females (p<0.05). However, the measurements related to length tended to increase as the age decreased. The relationship between the parts that are length related showed high correlation. Hand length showed high correlation with palm length, middle finger length and index finger length. Males' were significantly greater than females' in every dimension (p<0.05). Also, the results of this study were compared with the data of Japanese and U.S. army. The results of this study can be used to design the hand related products.
