  • The progressive in English is taken to be an operator which takes a non-stative predicate and returns a predicate which denotes a process with a temporal frame around some definite time or event. When, it is combined with a predicate which has a culmination in the event, the sentence means that the culmination has not come yet. So the event denoted by the base predicate is not true at the current time. On the other hand, when it is combined with a predicate which has no culmination in the event, the event denoted by the base predicate is taken to be true. In this paper, this is explained by the semantics of the progressive based on the notion of contributiveness. I propose that a progressive sentence is verified by some subevents which are contributive to the current situation and the progress of the event beyond the threshold level of the event denoted by the base predicate. A sub-situation is contributive if the addition of it to the previous situation is more likely to lead to the whole situation than the previous situation.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the involvement strategies in presentation discourse of Korean native speakers and to compare strategies in presentation of Korean learners and international graduate students with that. For this study, the presentation discourse of 13 Korean undergraduates, 21 Korean graduate students, 6 Korean advanced learners, 8 international graduate students was analyzed. The results of the study showed that Korean native speakers used many types of involvement strategies such as conversing, expressing solidarity, expressing closeness. Asking questions to audience was a representative type of conversing. And expressing solidarity was divided using 'we' and sharing experience. expressing closeness was also divided insertion of personal cases and joking. On the other hand, Korean learners and international graduate students used simple types of involvement strategies. Based on these results, I have proposed a few teaching ways for involvement strategies.

  • The impact of programming languages in the research sector has helped lot of researchers to broaden their view and extend their work without any limitation. More importantly, even the complex problems can be solved in no matter of time while converting them into a programming language. This convenience provides upper hand for the researchers as it places them in a comfort zone where they can work without much stress. With this context, we have converted the research problems in Topology into programming language with the help of Python. In this paper, we have developed a Python program to find the weaker form of closed sets namely alpha closed set, semi closed set, pre closed set, beta closed set and regular closed set.

  • The present study explored a comprehensive investigation of university professors' perspectives on the implementation of ChatGPT - an artificial intelligence-powered language model - in their teaching practices. A diverse group of 30 university professors responded to a questionnaire about the level of their interest in implementing the tool, willingness to apply it, and concerns they have regarding the intervention of ChatGPT in higher education setting. The results showed that the participants are highly interested in employing the tool into their teaching practice, and find that the students are likely to benefit from using ChatGPT in classroom settings. On the other hand, they displayed concerns regarding high depandency on data, privacy-related issues, lack of supports required, and technical contraints. In today's fast-paced society, educators are urged to mindfully apply this inevitable generative AI means with thoughtfulness and ethical considerations to and for their learners. Relevant topics are discussed to successfully intervene AI tools in teaching practices in higher education.

  • Recently detection of early gastric cancer (EGC) has been increasing and the treatment strategies for gastric cancer have been changing. The purpose of this study was to compare clinical outcomes between laparoscopically assisted (LADG) and hand-assisted laparoscopic gastrectomy (HALDG) and open distal gastrectomy for early gastric cancer. This review is directed toward providing gastric surgeons with recent advances in the treatment of EGC. We investigated the English language literature for the past 12 years through computer searches which focused on : 1) Patient demographics, 2) Operation time, 3) Intra-operative blood loss, 4) Depth of invasion, 5) CBC, 6)Weight loss, 7) Analgesic requirement, 8)Time NPO, 9) Length of hospital stay, 10) Tumor stage, 11) Lymph node (LN) dissection, 12) Position of LN resected, 13) Complications. Improved operative techniques and surgical instrumentation have facilitated the development of minimally invasive gastric cancer surgery. The short-term benefits of laparoscopic gastrectomy included less surgical trauma, less pain, rapid return of gastrointestinal function, and shorter hospital stay, with no change in operative outcome. Laparoscopic gastrectomy was better accepted by the patients as a good procedure and promptly brought the patients back to their previous lifestyle and activities of daily living. But the advantages of HALDG for gastric cancer, extended lymph node dissection and intracorporeal anastomosis are feasible and easier with the presence of the internal hand. The hand-assisted laparoscopic (HALDG) method reported the best results in lymph node dissection. This method is an alternative to total laparoscopic radical gastrectomy. LADG and HALDG, when compared with conventional open gastrectomy, have several advantages. When performed by a skilled surgeon, LADG and HALDG are safe and useful techniques for patients with early-stage gastric cancer. Their appropriateness for gastric cancer surgery require further study.

  • Recently, the researches of object tracking and recognition using Microsoft's Kinect are being actively studied. In this environment human hand detection and tracking is the most basic technique for human computer interaction. This paper proposes a method of improving the accuracy of the detected hand region's boundary in the cluttered background. To do this, we combine the hand detection results using the skin color with the extracted depth image from Kinect. From the experimental results, we show that the proposed method increase the accuracy of the hand region detection than the method of detecting a hand region with a depth image only. If the proposed method is applied to the sign language or gesture recognition system it is expected to contribute much to accuracy improvement.

  • Hand gesture recognition is an essential technology for the people who have difficulties using spoken language to communicate. Electromyogram (EMG), which is often utilized for hand gesture recognition, is expected to have difficulties in hand gesture recognition because its people's movements varies depending on prior postures, but the study on this subject is rare. In this study, we conducted tests to confirm if the prior postures affect on the accuracy of gesture recognition. Data were recorded from 20 subjects with different prior postures. We achieved average accuracies of 89.6% and 52.65% when the prior states between the training and test data were unique and different, respectively. The accuracy was increased when both prior states were considered, which confirmed the need to consider a variety of prior states in hand gesture recognition with EMG.

  • This paper tests whether the VOT (Voice Onset Time) contributes to the perception of tense and plain stops in Korean in the initial position. Previous studies have yielded opposite results regarding the role of the VOT in the distinction of these two stop categories. One the one hand, Lisker and Abramson (1964), Kim (1965), and Han and Weitzman (1970) suggest that the Korean plain and tense stops exhibit overlapping values of VOT and thus that, unlike many other languages, the VOT fails to serve as a cue to separate these stop categories. On the other hand, Silva (1991, 1992), and Lee (1991, 1994) use similar methods, but find that the VOT serve as the cue. In this study, the differences in the acoustic measurement with respect to the VOT of Korean plain and tense stops in initial prevocalic position will be tested preceptually, in seeking to determine whether these acoustic differences are used by listeners to distinguish these two stop types.

  • This study attempts to verify the reliability of automatically generated segment labels as compared to those obtained by conventional labelling by hand. First of all, an autolabeller is constructed using the standard HMM speech recognition technique. For evaluation, we compare the automatically generated labels with manually annotated labels for the same speech data. The comparison is performed by calculating the temporal difference between an autolabel boundary and its corresponding hand label boundary. When the mismatched duration between two labels falls within 10 msec, we consider the autolabel as correct. The results suggest that overall 78% of autolabels are correctly obtained. It is found that the boundary of obstruents is better aligned than that of sonorants and vowels. In case of stop sound classes, strong stops in manner-of-articulation wise and velar stops in place-of-articulation wise show better performance in boundary alignment. The result suggests that more phone-specific consideration is necessary to improve autosegmentation performance.
