We studied the nitrogen behavior and budget of Lake Paldang from March to December 2008. The particulate nitrogen (PN) concentrations ranged from 7 to 13% of the total nitrogen concentration (TN) in the stream inflows, the downstream outflow, and the lake water. The nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3-N$) concentration ranged from 67 to 78% of the TN. In the three rivers of Lake Paldang, Gyeongan River (In3 site) had the highest average of the TN, 5.037 mgN/L, but North Han River (In2 site) had the lowest average TN, 1.683 mgN/L. South Han River (In1 site) had the average TN of 2.399 mgN/L. In the dam discharge, TN showed the average 2.063 mgN/L. In the lake water, L4 site (Gyeongan River area) had the highest average TN, 3.781 mgN/L, but L3 site (North Han River) had the lowest average TN, 1.587 mgN/L. Total input of nitrogen loads to Lake Paldang was about 30,875 ton/year in 2008. Inflow rivers contributed 30,643 ton/year (South Han River: 18,111 ton/year (59%), North Han River: 11,333 ton/year (37%), and Gyeongan River: 1,199 ton/year (4%)). The atmospheric deposition had 135 ton/year, the nitrogen release from the bottom sediments had 88 ton/year, and macrophytes had 9 ton/year. Total output of nitrogen loads from Lake Paldang was about 31,256 ton/year. The downstream from dam contributed 29,877 ton/year, and the sediment deposition was 1,379 ton/year.

Mollusks were collected with Ponar grab from seven stations in lower part of Han river, Korea from June 1995 through May 1996. Basket sampler with artificial substrate was also employed to collect the adhesive mollusks. In addition to above mentioned sampling stations, Bam islet was surveyed. A total of species, Corbicula fluminea, Anodonta woodiana, Unio douglasiae, Limnoperna fortunei, corbicula fenouilliana and Physa acuta, were collected in lower part of Han river. Author reviewed the literatures on the ecological survey of molluscan fauna in Han river.
From the direct outflow of Chungju Dam to the junction of water body and watershed in Paldang lake is the scope of this research. This study performed to investigate the main cause of water quality deterioration and the influenced region in the middle field range of the Namhan river Basin with the onsite measurement of water quality and flow rate simultaneously during spring dry season. The purpose of this study is to find out the time-spatial variation characteristics of water quality and flow rate. Following the flow direction $BOD_5$ and $COD_{Mn}$ concentration increased to the highest value of 3.7 mg/L, 5.9 mg/L at Wolgesa respectively. Chl.a concentration increased to $50mg/m^3$ or so at Kangsang, after that it decreased to $37mg/m^3$ at the junction of Paldang lake. Organic matter concentration variation trend showed similar than that of Chl.a. Also $BOD_5$ concentration tendency was similar to Chl.a in every measuring sites except Paldang lake mixing zone. The major factors of water quality deterioration in Namhan river and Paldang lake during dry season were algal bloom and followed internal production. High phosphorus load from Dalcheon and Seom river caused dry season algal bloom and internal production in transitional zone which was stagnant area in downstream of Namhan river.

The water pollution Accident in the South Han River is increasing due to increase of pollutants inflow from small streams from rural areas and reduced flow rate. This study predicted the change of water quality in the main stream of the South Han River due to climate change through the linkage of watershed and water quality models. Also, This study analyzed the effect of water quality improvement on Seomgang and the South Han River by securing the flow during the dry season. According to the scenarios for securing the river flow during drought season, the river flow in the Seomgang is increased up to 2.19 times, and the water quality during the drought season was improved up to $BOD_5$ 20.5%, T-N 40.8%, T-P 53.4%. Also, the water quality of the main stream of the South Han River improved to 5.22% of $BOD_5$, 5.42% of T-N and 7.69% of T-P as the river flow was secured from the Seomgang. The result of this study confirms that securing the baseflow in the Seomgang according to the scenarios for securing the river flow during the dry season has a positive effect on the improvement of the water quality of the rivers in the main river of the Seomgang and South Han River. The results of this study will contribute to the establishment of reasonable management to improve the water quality of the main stream of the Seomgang and South Han River.
The Han river flowing the southern boundary of Hangyang city wall was known for scenic remote villa spot. This research is about a study on the historical and cultural landscape value of Apgujung built on hills of the Han river by Han Myeong Hoe in the mid-15th century. The results are as follows. First, the Han river has been a cultural poetical place. Second, the pavilion of west river was built as thatched roof at 1454-1456, while that of east river was erected as grand villa at 1469-1473. Third, there are characteristics of periodical landscape and origin was included on historical and cultural landscape, therefore, Apgujuing-dong has been recognized with the story. Han river where Apgujung was built has beautiful water landscape in spite of the landscape of modem downtown. Fourth, there are placeness and Han river of main landscape text streams nearby Apgujung site. Historical and cultural landscape of Apgujung should be changed, but, the landscape value could be progressed with the application as cultural contents while the Han river flows. It could be cultivated on the application of various culture contents and story of Apgujung when the historical landscape of water system be restored in Han river.
Among the rivers in Korea, the Han River is the largest, most important one, which runs through the Seoul metropolitan region in the west toward the yellow sea. In the Han River basin there live as many as 17.1 mil. people including appr, 11 mil, citizens in Seoul. The Seoul Metropolitan region, already containing appr. 40% of the nation's total populating, expectedly poses an ever-growing polluting burden to the Han River. Due to Korea's vigorous industrialization and heavy urbanization in the past quarter century, water pollution was observed to be increasing in the Han River until the mid-1980's, but thereafter the Han River began to improve little by little by virtue of the government's massive investment and all-out efforts in water preservation. Public awareness on the importance of environmental protection is increasing unprecedentedly. With a view to meeting people's growing demand for clean water and pleasant environment, the government established the "Comprehensive Mid-Term Environmental Conservation Plan" (1992∼1993) in 1991. According to the plan, 1,315 bil.won(1.7 bil.us$ ) is to be poured into the Han River Basin to install 113 water pollutant abatement plants including 43 treatment facilities. To successfully cope with the future's challenging need for the environmentally sound sustainable development, a variety of measures and an array of policies are going to be incorporated with emphasis on, -redistributing such polluting sources as population and industries -tightening control of the water pollutant discharge -restricting the pollution-accompanying land use -enhancing the assimilation capacity of the river -stirring up the public awareness and participation in the environment protection We hopefully anticipate that with those e(forts the Han River will improve as drawn in the attached "1996's Envisioned Han River Quality".
Runoff characteristics of pollutant loads of the lower Han River was studied before full implementation of Total Pollution Load Management System(TPLMS). Magnitude of macroscopic(annual) fluctuation was in the order of Namhan River > Han River > Bukhan River, gross weight TP > gross weight TN > gross weight BOD, gross weight deviation > concentration deviation. Flux variation was higher than that of concentration. Microscopic(weekly) fluctuation showed similar pattern to macroscopic scale. TP showed the highest deviation resulting in the lowest reliability. 60% of annual flux passed during summer 3months resulting in 43-46% pass of gross weight at the lower Han River. Strong correlation was found between flux and gross weight especially in gross weight TN. Gross weight pollution increased as high as 400% while passing Seoul area due to the concentration. The deviation from moving average increased during summer season in the gross weight TP and BOD. Seasonal tendency was confirmed especially in gross weight TN and TP using autocorrelation function.
The objective of this research is to evaluate the water quality characteristics using the statistical analysis of major tributaries in the Han River and to provide water quality improvement plan by selecting tributaries that should be preferentially managed by river grade classification method. The major 15 tributaries in Han River watershed were monitored for discharge and water quality during January-December 2017. As a result of the correlation analysis, the river discharge has been not correlation with other water quality constituents (p>0.05) but COD and TOC were significantly correlated (r=0.957, p<0.01). The main cause of water quality fluctuation was organic pollutants and nutrients in the principal component analysis (PCA) method. The BOD, COD, TOC, TN, and TP were found to be significantly different (p<0.05) by seasonal in result of one-way ANOVA analysis. Result of river grade classification by quantitative indicators the tributaries requiring improvement of water quality were Gulpocheon, Anyangcheon, Wangsukcheon, and Tancheon which affected by wastewater treatment plant. In this research, we determined tributaries that need to improve the water quality of Han River watershed and it can be used as an important data for efficient water quality management.

We analyzed the formation of phytoplankton community and the occurences of odorus compound from benthic cyanobacteria in North, South Han-River, Paldang-Lake and Kyeongan-Stream sediments. Sediments were incubated in different water temperature. Akinetes were found (0~500 cells/g) with the highest number on sediment in Yangsoo railroad bridge (YC). The result showed that Anabaena ranged between $0.02{\sim}0.53{\times}10^3cells/mL$ in Sambong (SB), YC, Mukhyen-Stream (MS), Paldang-Lake (P2) and Kyeongan-Stream (KK). The total 68 taxa of phytoplankton were observed during the incubation period. A standing crop of phytoplankton was in the range of $0.13{\sim}8.97{\times}10^3cells/mL$ and Microcystis appeared in SB, YC, P2 and KK sites with $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ temperature. In South Han-River (P3), Oscillatoria tenuis was dominant at $25^{\circ}C$ temperature. The concentration of geosmin was the highest in SB-$15^{\circ}C$ (25.5 ng/L), and the concentration of 2-MIB was the highest in P3-$25^{\circ}C$ (286.8 ng/L). Odorous compounds were detected in all the temperature conditions from each site. Our results indicate that the dominant benthic cyanobacteria (O. tenuis, O. limosa, Phormidium tenue and Pseudanabaena limnetica) have high correlation with the occurrence odorous compounds and 2-MIB.
